Camera frozen/won't open even after Factory Reset - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

Hello dear XDA Members,
on my OP 5T I was using the latest official Firmware 10.0.1 when suddenly the main camera froze and since then would not open again. I have tried all recommended things like restart, clearing the camera cache or the whole cache partition and so on. I performed a factory reset, downgrade to last OOS 9 version and installed latest LineageOS. Nothing worked. I also ordered a replacement camera module, but this did not work either. So it appears as if this is a hardware issue with the main board. However, I wanted to hear if anybody experienced something similar or even has a way to possibly fix this without the need for a replacement mainboard. for example through some magic commands
The other camera modules (aux back and front) work fine by the way.
Thanks in advance, have a nice day!

[Q] Can a ROM kill the camera?

I had a perfectly working Galaxy Nexus running CM10.x, which I updated to a CM11 nightly. This worked great for a week or so and then the camera and gallery started FCing. After several resets, restores, newer/older nightly installs, nothing changed. Tried all possible combinations of new/old Gapps, but still no luck. I tried different ROMs - PA, stock 4.3 and some others, but nope. I even tried Ubuntu Touch and even that couldn't access the camera. This is when I was pretty convinced that the camera module itself must have died.
My questions:
What killed the camera? Is it possible that a bad ROM could have done it?
Is it possible to fix this via software?
I can try and get it repaired locally, but I just want to know if anything can be done at home.
Thanks.

A ROM wouldnt just kill the camera over time. It would have not worked right after the ROM was installed. So I doubt it was a ROM. I would do a full reset. Not just a normal factory reset but flash the factory image and see if it fixes it. If it doesn't then most likely it's a hardware issue.

I've used the phone for over a year without any issues with several kernels and ROMs before and the camera worked just fine.
Yes, I've done a complete clean up - I wiped the whole phone and memory (using the fastboot -w option) and installed different ROMs and even a different OS (Ubuntu Touch), but the camera issue persists.
I believe it's hardware issue, but I just wanted to know if anyone's faced a similar problem.

Yup. I believe that's the exact post I referred to when I did it.
It even lost root during this process (of course) and I had to do it again - something I hadn't done in almost two years.
Since it was a spare phone, there wasn't any useful data on it. I backed up a few pictures and completely wiped it clean. No luck.
I'll add that the issue is only with the camera. Some apps FC, some apps (such as Camera+) give a message saying it was unable to connect to the camera or something. I believe the Gallery also FCs because it uses the camera at some point. All other apps work perfectly fine.

Usually if the phone has any issues at all, that process fixes them. And if it doesn't, then there is usually something wrong with the hardware. I wouldn't think the problem was brought on by installing a ROM or kernel though.
I think it's related to the kernel that you're using
......
i think yes but if you change the rom it will work
some roms the camera has some bugs big bugs colors are broken and stuff

Camera - Black Screen

I just purchased a second hand as new G3 online. This thing is in mint condition, no scratches or anything. Upon getting it kitkat was installed, i tested everything and the camera worked (front and rear), i took a couple of pics.
I promptly rooted and bumped twrp, made a backup of current install and then proceeded to install chuppachups rom, installed a couple other small tweaks (throttling, and conservative governor). Everything went well until later that day when i went to use the camera, and got just a black screen. Tried facebook messenger and could use front camera not rear. Reset phone, no help. Wiped cache, davlik, internal data - no help. Relfashed chuppachups after wiping everything - no help. At this point i realized i hadn't tested the camera at all after installing chuppachups so restored from the twrp kitkat backup and no camera still... ummmm. Ive tried the xcam apk and that doesn't work either.
Can anyone help resurrect the camera?
Anyone? im at a loss because this was going when i got it. and now i have restored from that backup after a wipe and its not going im confused as to what it could be?
Just performed a lg flashtool reset (cse) using kdz file. this also hasn't helped. . dont know what to do at this stage
Have decided it must be a hardware issue. Opened phone and checked camera connection to motherboard - ok. So have ordered a new camera, they are ridiculously cheap! ($8usd)

Back camera not working/Flashlight not activating on stock, custom ROM or safe mode

Hi all,
I've been having quite a few problems with my month-old HTC 10, specifically with the camera (and the WLAN coverage, but at least that's working somewhat!) I finally unpacked it last week and have spent the whole week since attempting to fix the "Camera has stopped/Unable to connect to camera" problem. The selfie camera, however, is perfect and can be used in other apps, but attempting to switch to the camera on the back results in a freeze/force close. Considering I decided on the HTC 10 because of the camera quality, I'm a bit disappointed so far. A google search reveal a number of people having the same problem, but no real solution. Here's what I've done so far:
- Set up phone, comes with Nougat 7.0. Camera works at first, though seems to have problems with the auto focus. Camera app then updates overnight and stops working. Clear data/cache, remove updates, hard reset - no good. Flashlight does not work either, simply says "loading..." and stays like this indefinitely until closed.
- Factory reset, no change. Switch to safe mode, no change. Decided to unlock bootloader and install custom ROM after hearing that would fix it (I know, I know...I should have just sent it back at this point). Install Viper 5.10 + root with magisk, camera and flashlight still not working. Safe mode, not working. Full wipe in TWRP, RUU back to stock firmware (CID: HTC_034, flashed 2.41.401.3 signed firmware). Set up phone again on stock firmware, still no change in camera or flashlight.
- Install LeeDroid 10 3.7.0 custom ROM, root with magisk. I get a breakthrough here; turning off "OK Google" in settings gets the camera and flashlight working again! Still have the "laser autofocus blocked" issue, but I figure I'll deal with that later. Backed up with TiBu.
- Next day, decide to use a ROM that includes the latest security patches (got a bit annoyed waiting for HTC to push out the European updates, still on 1st January patch) so went for Resurrection Remix. Wipe, clean install etc. Camera stops working again, no change in safe mode. Wipe, clean flash back to LeeDroid, camera is no longer working, in normal mode or safe mode.
- Went through a bunch of custom ROMs at this point; ICE, Dirty Unicorns, LineageOS, then decided to try RR, LeeDroid and Viper again - camera still not working in normal mode or safe mode. With the ROMs that required GApps, used every package in both Open GApps and Dynamic GApps to install. No change to camera, Google Camera was unable to start as well.
- Flashed upgraded RUU (2.41.401.4 signed firmware) and went through the process of wipe/clean install custom ROM/test camera with all the above custom ROMs in normal mode and safe mode. No change in camera, though the ROMs were all excellently made
At this point I'm pretty stumped If it was a hardware problem, why did it work when I first installed LeeDroid, but not after? It's not been mishandled, it's just been sitting on my desk since I got it. The fact that it doesn't work in safe mode would suggest to me that ,maybe, a camera driver has been deleted somewhere along the way? I also tried a load of other methods I found on various message boards; flash it with no SD card inserted, flash without SIM card installed, etc. but absolutely nothing works.
Third party camera apps also don't work; most simply crash on starting. Open Camera says "Unable to access camera. Maybe being used by another app?", so I tried removing the permissions of all apps that had access to the camera except the camera itself - no change. Deleted cache/data/preferences of all apps - no change.
Finally, I had a look at the HTC diagnostics test using *#*# 3424 #*#* on the dialler - the camera test doesn't even show up! :crying:
I've run out of things to try at this point, so I'm posting this here to see if anyone can possibly shed some light on this very strange situation. Is there something I can do to fix it? Or should I start begging Amazon to give me a refund? Unfortunately I'm a week outside their 30 day return window...lesson learned for next time; if in doubt, send it back!
Oops, meant to post this in the Q and A forum. Don't want to spam a duplicate, is it possible to move it over?
Hardware issue. Contact HTC for a replacement. sounds like it may just not be connected. I had one with no working vibration notification, the motor would turn on, you could hear it, but the phone wouldn't vibrate. Got it replaced ASAP! I recommend you do the same!

Same issue here. The only thing that works for me (so far) is flashing back to a Marshmallow rom. HTC has been completely silent on this issue in terms of actually fixing the problem. They know the problem is there for only a small number of us and so aren't going to do anything about it. Fine. This was my first and will be my LAST htc phone. Buh bye htc, you'll never get another dime from me.
Did you fix the issue, coz i have the same in my HTC 10
Hi
follow my post in anildsouza73 blog..I will show how to fix it if someone really spoiled it...have a good day..
from yesterday morning the problem appeared to me. Initially, the difficulty in focusing, then rebooting the impossibility of opening the camera app and the flashlight. I found on Youtube the videos that showed the same problem. Is there a solution today?
Hi all
I found if I cleared my flashlight cache and then the camera cache, soft reset phone I could get the camera working again. Only problem now is the autofocus is not working properly. Any ideas for that?
Same problem. Focus stopped working, then I cannot launch camera app. Anyone found a solution?

OnePlus 5t camera issue

Hey I recently bought the OnePlus 5t and it was working fine, but now the camera app crashes and the back camera just shows a blank screen,I am able to use my front cam via third party apps, but back camera is completely not working.does anybody else face same problems and is there a solution? ( PS: I already cleared cache of camera app, wiped cache by pressing volume down and power button, used safe mode and also did a factory reset and it's still not working)
I am facing the same issue, I tried the same things you did. I did see on one plus forums that rooting the OS fixed the problem but I don't want to do that
Try to re flash stock (latest) Oxygen OS if that wont help probably you have faulty device.
Any solution? I have the same issue and I wouldn't like to buy a new one

Camera and torch not working LineageOS

Hey Guys,
My rear camera and torchlight aren't working anymore. I'm running the latest official LineageOS build.
My phone was on FW 8.7.5, because it was the recommended one for a while, but I read last week that 8.4.19 is the recommended one again. I just flashed the old version on Friday and everything was fine. I went out on Friday and also took a picture, no problem... But I noticed every now and then that the camera was only showing a black screen. I was on an older build, so I decided to flash the latest one (from last Monday), but it didn't fix the problem. I can now only use the front camera and not the rear camera or torchlight. I tried some Google can mods the last week, could that maybe be an issue? I already tried other apps, but only the front camera works. Clear cache &, deactivate of the stock cam didn't help.
Anybody know what could be the problem? I didn't reinstall the phone yet, because I had no time.
Hopefully it's not a problem that I opened a new thread and didn't post in the rom specific one, but I thought this could be a general problem and it's not rom related, because it just started without updating LineageOS...
Cheers
Flashed the stock ROM and it didn't fix the problem, so I guess it's the hardware. The phone is now one the way back and I'll get a replacement.
