Hi
Wonder if you guy's can help. Just got a sim free defy and have noticed it seems very data hungry from the off.
Installed a data app and its saying im using 5 mb + a day.
What is it doing, to use all this data all i seem to have done is put my location in the weather app thats built in, logged on to my face book and thats about it. oh and set up my o2 email account.
Cant seem to find how to limit the size of email download in the accounts.
How can i monitor each individual program and find out which ones causing the problem.

you could try setting up something on 'data manager'
Whats everybody else's usage average out each day only asking cause its my works phone sim and don;t want to get stung for data usage.
Today it's 2,76MB, though I've used 1,39GB over the last month.
I have 3GB included in my contract. couldn't care less about traffic ...
but if you want absolute control install droidwall and see what connects to the internet.

An Android phone was a mistake if you're looking to avoid heavy data usage.
my average is about 30 mb on weekends (out of wifi range) and like 2 mb on weekdays as I'm on school holidays and moslty always in wifi range

Cheers for the droidwall tip, seems a good way of restricting a lot of things
I also observe that Android sometimes produces traffic without an order to do so. 3gwatchdog counts the traffic and shows the origin-applications, some are just google or motoblur stuff but without any option to deactivate traffic or updates or whatever they're doing.....

Of course, the OS is designed to be used with an always-on data connection.
If you don't have one of those, an Android phone is not a good idea.
I do have unlimited traffic, but a speed limitation after 200 MB to 64kbit/s which isnt fun anymore.
Thats the problem of the big ans usually good providers in Germany, even the highly priced agreements have that little traffic included.
Thus, I think it should be possible to deactivate useless data traffic even in Android, mh? There should be some options that deny traffic usage in general and also for single apps. (btw. I tried droidwall, but some apps tunneld the firewall and produces traffic anyway!)

There are ways to completely disable data usage but I'm, not sure it's possible for individual apps.
But, like I said, if heavy data usage is a concern, Android is not the right OS for you.
Ignore Step666 his talking crap, android is a good OS even if ur not connected all the time, (I dont even use 3g connection, I mostly use only wi-fi) ..not everyone hangs on facebook all day or needs those weather widgets and stuff like that... really depends on a user.
but if u have a problem with heavy data usage i can help
-first a program that will help u monitor your usage (u can also reset counters monthly) - try traffic counter extended, there are also other apps that help u limit how much data u can transfer over wifi/cell
-second i think droidwall is the app u are looking for
(its a firewall for Android. This is for users that don't have an unlimited data plan. It allows unrestricted WiFi access, however it blocks all access over the cellular network unless you add the application to the whitelist.)
Also, try disabling auto sync on the power control widget.

No I'm not.
The fact you're having to install third-party apps to prevent the phone from automatically connecting to the internet merely proves my point - it is designed to be used with an always-on internet connection.
there was a third party app called DROIDWALL...it allows you to block all the unwanted apps from connecting with internet.. and yes it allows only specific apps to be blocked..
yeah use droidwall, its easy - set it to "white list (allow selected)" then select the google system apps and the apps you like to have internet access, any new apps you install wont get net access unless you add it to the white list, making it easy to manage.
you can also restrict wifi and/or 3G per app.
nice for apps like notepad that somehow need internet access.
Thanks for your ideas.
I did already use Droidwal for some time, but it did not function properly.
I blocked certain apps and for some time I blocked all apps, includig system apps. And what happened? There was data usage by any program, at least the traffic counter showed traffic usage. Thus, it seems not to block really what I set to block. :-/
Thx for the tip with Droidwall! Works great

What do you mean by "manually"? You can manually set apps to white- and blacklist, yeah, or what u mean?
Hello,
A few days ago I started receiving a notification saying "Sign in to network" and below that the name of my carrier (see the screenshot). When I click on the notification, the browser opens up but does not load any page and just stays blank. At that time the notification disappears but then appears again after a while.
Has anyone seen this and do you know why it may be appearing? I am fully stock on 4.2 and unrooted.
Thanks!
Does nobody know?
Hi,
Same problem here (with Mtel network operator),
After updating to 4.2.1 the problem still persists. After I click on the notification it asks me to open in a browser and then opens this address for a second 173.194.70.101/generate_204 , and turns into blank page.
I think that when I walk away from one network cell to a another it asks me to sign into the new cell, but I am not really sure..
I`ll keep posting if I find the solution..
Not sure if there is any difference for GSM variants of Gnex, but have you tried updating your PRL & Profile?
(Settings>About Phone>MTel? system updates)
Sometimes after a flash/upgrade until I update my Sprint profile, service seems spottier. Only other thing I can think is that your phone somehow is no longer provisioned with your carrier, shouldn't be the case (I think) when dealing with GSM carriers since your SIM what provisions the phone, but maybe poke around settings to see if there is some sort of self-provisioning option, or call M-tel.
Check your APNs. You might need new/corrected APN settings or something. That usually shows up when you're on a network (usually WiFi) that needs a user/password or accept a disclaimer to get through to the internet.
However on a mobile network the APN should serve as the connection settings and the SIM serves as authentication to the network. Normally you wouldn't be able to connect to mobile internet. Does MMS work?

Hey, guys, thanks for your input. Actually, since yesterday I stopped receiving this notification all of a sudden. I have not done anything in the mean time, so I guess it was something on the carrier's end that got resolved or something.

I'm also facing the same problem. I'm on Vodafone Portugal and occasionally I'm with full network signal but I don't have internet. When I check the notification bar I have that same message and if I click it, it opens the same "empty" web page.
I'm running stock 4.2.1 yakju.

Hi there. Since this issue disappeared for me without any action on my end, I am assuming that it is related to something on the carrier's end. It may be worth contacting your carrier's support?

Hi there. By trial and error i found out that this icon starts appearing when the carrier throttles your internet speed. For example, I have unlimited internet traffic but when I reach 512 MB of traffic, the internet speed is lowered to 128 kbps. This is when the icon starts appearing for me. I also found out that if you dismiss it, it will appear again if you change connections (e.g. go from wifi to mobile). I find this behaviour annoying but I found no way to prevent it, as it seems to be something on the carrier's side.
I have the same problem only on my android phone (4.2.2) Samsung Galaxy S3 when I am at my home WIFI..
Could it be a virus. only diffference is the IP.. my browser tries to load this: 173.194.35.99/generate_204
i've blocked this IP. I can't even access play store now! rest all things work

i dnt think its caused by virus. Try check ur apn setting. Or reformat ur phone.
When you connect a mobile device with Google Play via WiFi, I have found that I must allow ssl traffic via port 5228. This connection I think is an authorization service deployed by Google. If you trust it or not, when you block outbound port 5228 (or if you block Googles' ip's) you will see the "sign into network" This is because Google Play assumes (poorly) you are connected to a WiFi network which requires a captive portal login (ie Hotel WiFi sign-in page). I am no dev but I believe the "generate_204" thing just forces the mobile browser to open a new tab so the login page will appear. It's not spooky just annoying.
Why did Google choose to deploy ssl over port 5228 and not the standard 443? Not sure, but it might lead to your Firewall's security policy blocking it as it did for mine.
I started getting the same notification on my nexus 5 recently. I had reached my data fair usage allowance and so it started appearing. I noticed that in the data usage setting the warning bar was set to my fair usage limit so I just raised the bar and hey presto no more warnings. Based on this I reckon when your data usage cycle resets each month you'll see the warning disappear until you hit your limit again.
Just done a quick test by dropping the data usage bar back to where it originally was, turned off WiFi and started browsing the web. The warning appeared again.

I have had this issue ever since I got this current phone (not a Samsung, but hear me out). From what I can tell, it is because it can not contact someone (probably Google) via cellular network. I also get this when on a WiFi connection with no internet (or very, very slow), further supporting this.
I am in an interesting situation. My carrier only has 1 APN for both MMS and data combined. However, I only get MMS with my plan, not full data. Therefore, I need to keep data enabled in Android to use MMS. Because of this I get this notification ALL THE TIME.
I'm going to try to get a logcat when it happens and see if I can find the exact service and maybe kill it. I'll update if I figure it out.

I have the same problem. It make notification at the time u linked to mobile data too, and i can't suffer it any more.So i have searched all internet and have no progress. But i found the way to block its notifications rather than voiding generation.
It's a notification generated from "Android System" and seems like a network-check function. So the problem have the mobile carrier's part(I'm in china, you know). And u can't block all notifications of "Android System" using tools like LBE or Gravitybox or anyothers cause it is useful all the time.
This Xposed Mod can help us: NotifyClean, it is the only tool to block several notifications u want of one app.
Use it in ur rooted system with xposed framework, and open it from xposed. It can log all notifications and u can tick the "Sign in to network"s in "Android System".
Does anyone know how to block YouTube ads on an unrooted Fire TV? I tried installing ABP but I couldn't set the proxy in the network settings. There doesn't seem to be an option for that. Any help would be appreciated. TIA.
ABP on Android requires root for hosts file access.
I have a good one for WiFi (no root required) that I am still using since the other blocker apps (which require root/I have root access) started failing to block the ads.
https://app.usb0.net/wifiadblock.en.html
Read all of the details on the page,it is a good read before clicking the link to the download page.
And yes,I know the screen images are not in english,I can confirm that I have used this amazing app with no issues.
It works perfectly fine on my FireTV,even before getting root!!!
It even worked via SDK on the unrootable GTV I used to have,my original time I found the app!
A few minor issues that can be easily avoided, after getting it working properly,it can sometimes refresh your connection to update the blocker condition.
You can simply enable the blocker, exit the app,and then "force stop" it to keep it from causing random and brief disconnections to update the condition.
For the issue that it fails to work at first, you may need to let it modify your settings so it can change your DNS numbers to the ones it uses for blocking the ads.
This is the main thing it needs for the ability to block ads.
Edit: It will usually take a few moments before your FireTV is connected to internet again because it is doing the changes for blocking not only YouTube ads,but many more ads including ones found in other Android apps.
(excluding apps like 7zipper since they are self promoting ads for the devs other apps)
Good luck!
5.0.5 broke the adblocking from WiFi AdBlocker. Can anyone suggest another alternative for this? Thanks.

I followed the instuctions here

I can confirm having manually entered them I am no longer seeing ads.
I have a pixel 2 xl with EX 1.01 kernel. I downloaded wireguard and then signed up on azire. It says it's only free until tomorrow- which is now today. I downloaded all the host files/ phony addresses and put them in wireguard.
Am I going to have to pay for the VPN? It was my understanding that this was all free. I'm still not sure what this is going to be doing for me though. It's my understanding that with wireguard on I can route my internet traffic through a phony server/location/device address. Azire had choices of Canada, Switzerland, Miami Florida, and some other places. I downloaded a file for each place. So I can just toggle on one of the locations and all my internet traffic will go through that phony address, right? This will allow me to access restricted content at work without work being able to track me, right? For example, movie and entertainment stuff is not viewable during lunch break because its access is restricted.
edit: I had 1 of the wireguard locations toggled on today. They were files I added from azire. They don't let me access ANYTHING on the internet when the switch is flipped on and in on my work wifi. What's going on?
Please can someone also explain the REAL, awesome benefits of wireguard and VPN? I'm only really playing around with it at this point.
I just signed up, and it says OpenVPN is free for 24 hours, while Wireguard is free indefinitely.
I don't know much about all this stuff, but I think Wireguard is a replacement for OpenVPN, which has a lot less lines of code, lighter, and having better security compared to OpenVPN. I think it's free currently as it is new and still under testing. Somebody with better knowledge oughta chime in and add more info.
Well its not much use if the VPN itself isn't free, right? What is everyone using this for? I am having a really hard time understanding it's application. If all the VPN services cost, I would think one would have to use this stuff a lot for it to make sense. Are there good, free VPNs?
I have the wireguard switch on for one the VPN files I downloaded from azire, and it works at home on my home networks, but at work I can not access anything on the internet. What does this mean? It was doing that before the 24hr trial was up (pretty sure). And I would think it wouldn't be working anymore, but I can still access stuff while on my home network with the wireguard in app switches toggled.
Im exploring this because if my phone and kernel are capable of it, I'd like to learn and utilize it. Just need help understanding how and what the proper application is.

VPN basically protects you from being identified on the internet. People use it to prevent the government or hackers from spying on them, or even bypass restrictions on website that the government imposed(torrent, porn, google.com in China).
Sure there are free VPNs, but I guess the "protection" will not be very secure compared to a paid VPN. Obviously not all paid VPNs will be super secure, you'll have to do your research on which company provides the most secure VPN. But if you're just looking to bypass restrictions and don't give a hoot about security, a free VPN normally suffice.
About not able to access the internet during work, yeah probably the office network doesn't allow any form of VPN, since that would mean they don't know what you would be doing.

the openvpn was a 24hr trial period.. openvpn will not work in wireguard
this is more a general question, not really for themes and apps section.. i suggest u read up on vpns and the different types/methods to understand more about them

How do I know if my azire is still functioning? With the wireguard VPN switched on I can access sites on my home network
Is there anyway to get around wifi networks blocking access to VPN? Can I change dns settings or addresses or something? Every place I try to use this it doesn't work. I can use my VPN at home which is where I least care to use it or need it.
I'm currently at a hotel. There are tons of people on the wifi and it seems if I were concerned about security and safe browsing I'd want to use this now! I can't! As soon as I enable the VPN the internet access stops. This seems useless. Can someone help?
I used to always unlock bootloaders, install TWRP, flash clean Android and load up AdAway until my latest S20 acquisition. The intention was to wait out the 2yr warranty period and then do it until I learned that ad blocking was possible using the Private DNS setting.
Over the first days of using my new S20 I was really shocked at the volume of crap blasting at me that AdAway was blocking in the past, so trying out Private DNS was a welcome relief (dns.adguard.com).
It's only been a few days since I've done this and I just applied the setting to the wife's (stock) Huawei P20 Pro, and yes a large volume of ads are now missing, a sight for very sore eyes.
Just wondering if others have had positive and/or negative experiences using Private DNS for ad blocking. I saw Pixel 2s were rebooting but I'm sure the latest versions of Android would have sorted this by now. I haven't experienced anything untoward so far but I'm a very light user and only had the phone 4 days.
Works great for me! No more Blokada, DNS66, et al. Been using this since my Note 9.
Install youtube vanced and you're all set.
Tried dns.adguard.com before but some ads were still going through so i stuck to blokada, but now it seems to work fine, no more vpn icon
Used AdAway on rooted devices too ... with dns.adguard.com i had no problems while using it .... if you want, try this.. dns.keweon.center ..which i currently use...also excellent DNS
No need to use VPN Ad blockers.
Instead of dns.adguard.com use nextdns.io
Get free account and configure it as You want, with many filters full loging etc. It's better than AdAway.
Then You can set private dns to Your custom nextdns config.

Thanks for this tip.
I've just set it up after a week of quite successful dns.adguard.com ad blocking but I really like the enormous flexibility of nextdns.io and its (potential) threat protection, as well as the logging (in CH) and analytics. Reminds me of OpenDNS but with ad blocking as well!
I have recommended it to a friend with two younger boys, he might appreciate the content filtering side for them, but generally the one thing that has irked me about smartphones is the potential for accidentally landing on a new malware site even if it is unlikely to infect Android.
The problem with the any DNS or VPN based blocking method: Chrome will randomly stop functioning whenever I am connected to any wifi network.
It will just stop loading random sites, not show all pictures in Google Image search, not show anything anymore when you click back and forward or just stop loading anything at all.
Go to mobile connection, it immediately works. Disable the DNS/VPN blocker, it immediately works.
Reconnect wifi, it will work again for a while. Can be two days, can be ten minutes. It's completely random.
I am not able to figure out ANY reason why this is happening.
I know Chrome has its own DNS resolver and you should disable it when using DNS based blocking methods (disable async dns resolver and clear dns cache), and while this fixes the problem that not all ads are blocked in a reliable way, it doesn't fix the wifi connection loss.
Using DNS or VPN based blockers only cause problems in Chrome, no other app.
I know I could just switch browsers, its just that I use Chrome on desktop as well and like the synced bookmarks.
Does anyone have any idea why using a VPN/DNS based adblocker would cause Chrome to specifically stop working randomly only in a wifi network, but not via mobile?
I have had this issue over several devices and Android versions for years now and I can't figure it out.

Does it happen only on your home network? If so, are you using additional adblockers such as Pi-hole or dns.adguard..com as your router's default DNS?
Interesting that it happens only with mobile Chrome. Just another reason to stop using Chrome....
just use Disconnect Pro instead, Adblock through KNOX.
Sorry guys you all lying to urselfs... best adblock is still only via root available! Energized or AdAway is where it's at.

Thank you for this! I missed adhell so much since it worked through Knox as well. Right now I'm running private dns on my phone from adguard and I'm going to use this app along with it as well.
Just go buy a Raspberry Pi Zero W and throw an SD card into it, install Pihole on it and VPN into your home network. Most modern routers have a VPN server built into them, Samsung phones all have a VPN client built in, and you can get a Pi Zero for $10 (or under $20 bundled with an MicroSD if you don't have one lying around from an old phone).
No root or special software on the phone end needed, and once the Pi is set up it's plug and play.

Does it happen only on your home network? If so, are you using additional adblockers such as Pi-hole or dns.adguard..com as your router's default DNS?
Interesting that it happens only with mobile Chrome. Just another reason to stop using Chrome....

Chrome is purposely crippled to do this - there's even a dev flag to disable the behavior. It's the main reason I stopped using it and disabled it entirely. I went to Samsung's browser and have actually been really happy with it - the dark mode actually makes all web sites dark, even the ones that don't work with Chrome's.
Thank you.
Do you see any issues accessing very secure sites like banks thru the DNS blocks?

If the blocker is doing its job correctly, it shouldn't have issues with any legit site. This actually protects you since most of the blockers also block malicious domains so if you accidentally click a phishing link it *might* keep you from getting to it.
The problems you WILL see if that sponsored results in search engines will stop working, because they route through an ad site rather than directly to the thing you want to go to. Once you get used to ignoring the top few results in Google, it's not so bad. There's also the issue of sites that block you if they detect an ad blocker. Most sites aren't smart enough to be able to detect a DNS based blocker, but if they are you will either not be able to use the site, or you'll need to turn the DNS blocker off or whitelist the site while you do.

Yeah I stopped clicking the top search results a long time ago. I was an avid AdGuard user, but their app used too much battery. I changed my default DNS to dns.adguard.com and it blocks ads as well as their app, without the battery hit.
In 2017, I purchased two Adguard lifetime licences for $10/each ($20 total), one of my best purchased ever! Now the same license is $70/each.
Have not had a need to root and still no ads on our phones for years now!
