Flashing failed completly, could repair it. What do i do now? - Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite Questions & Answers

What happend:
I bought a used Mi A2 lite with stock Android 8. Because i already used LineageOS and really love it, i want to continue to use it.
I did the flashing process a few times wrong. After the help of a very kind user i did it as it was supposed to be.

Let me sum up the process which will probably answer your all questions.
Once you opened the bootloader and flashed TWRP image successfully and saw TWRP screen on your phone, unplug it from PC.
IF you will install a custom rom, than
1- format data, type 'yes'. Reboot to recovery
2- advaanced wipe( everyting except sd card) (ı assume you should have put custom rom file and twrp.installer.zip to your sd card)
3- install custom rom and twrp.installer.zip(choosing to upload from your sdcard, you will be able to see them)
4- go back. Press "reboot" but don't reboot anything. From reboot menu, change slot(if you're at slot 'a', change your slot to 'b', vice versa)
5- now you can press reboot to recovery.
6- once recovery(twrp) opens, you can install gapps and magisk.
7- reboot the system.

Doing so cause, that my Phone didn't boot the OS anymore. I could see the Android ONE bootlogo, after that the screen turned black. Phone must be still running because PC detected a device, when i connected the phone to my PC.
If i keep pressing Louder and Start i could enter recovery, with quieter i could enter fastboot.
Thankfully i discovered this thread:
never ending boot after stock ROM install
My Mi A2 Lite had stock rom v10.0.18.0, unlocked bootloader, Magisk v20.3 and TWRP using Offain v3.3.1. I wanted to try dotOS custom ROM and followed this tutorial: https://github.com/tkchn/daisyinstall I begin with step 1 installing daisy...
forum.xda-developers.com
and fixed the Phone so i can start an OS again. Now is my question, what did go wrong? What is the best way to continue from this point to flash LineageOS on my phone? Do i have to update the OS from the thread first and try it again?
Phone is still OEM unlocked.
Thank you guys in advance!

Ok i got it now. For whoever will find this in the future:
I started at the point above and updated the Stock Android 9 to the latest version.
1. Enable USB-Debugging and open Bootloader in the settings
2. Shut down Phone and start into fastboot
3. Use command: "fastbood oem unlock"
This will cause a factory reset, be aware
4. Check settings and go into fastboot again, then use command
"fastboot boot <name of your twrp image>"
Proceed this way:

Just going to dump all the info I've found about this device into this thread. All the threads pertaining to this thread are in Russian and I can't read Russian, so this might be helpful to any English speaking owners of this tablet.
Special thanks to Telegram user @SSDD_1744 (don't know your XDA/Reddit user, I'm sorry) for basically spoonfeeding me all these instructions!
WARNING: If you need to flash to stock for whatever reason, be sure to download a image file specific to your country. If you don't, you'll hard brick your device that can only be fixed QPST (supposedly).
Rooting:
(Tested on 5.0.2)
Install KingRoot. Let it root your device.
Install Super-SU Me, to get rid of the bloatware that comes with KingRoot.
Installing Xposed:
I used Flashify to flash TWRP. Be sure to flash the right version though (2.8.7.7 v2) or else you won't be able to mount cache.
Then download Xposed (version sdk21 ARM) and flash it.
WARNING: Flash v1 of the modded TWRP and you won't be able install any apps after flashing Xposed.
Unbricking:
Still working on it. Downloaded QPST but have not been able to get QPST 2.7 to read the tablet.

Recommended way to flash ROMs:
1) Download TWRP. Use adb to boot (NOT flash) into TWRP. Flash ROM there.
2) use KingRoot to root. Use Flashify to flash the ROM.

I see that Lineage OS is supported on Z380KL. However, I found the wiki spec showing Snapdragon 410, but I found Z380KL in Asia with Snapdragon 615. Before I commit, I'd like to know if anyone knows whether LineageOS is fully compatible with Z380KL with Snapdragon 615 chipsets? Thanks.

Flashing TWRP on 6.0.1 (Sept 1, 2016 patch):
1) grab your drivers (W10: boot into "no driver signature verification mode" to install the drivers needed for fastboot)
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1cGcoDCvmTxfXWNTG0iOXHw1WScmYBrKS
2) turn on debugging
3) type in "adb devices", verify that your computer sees your tablet (if you don't have ADB/Fastboot, get https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790)
4) type in "adb reboot bootloader"
5) you'll see three options: 1. Enter SD DL mode, 2. Factory Reset, 3. Exit update mode
6) type in "fastboot devices", verify that your computer sees your tablet
7) grab your TWRP file (http://vasy.ru/TWRP/P024/) and type in "fastboot flash recovery [replace w/ location of the TWRP file].img"
8) once it says "finished", click factory reset mode (use volume buttons to navigate, power button to enter)
9) it should reboot into TWRP, slide to allow modifications
10) Boom, TWRP is installed.
OPTIONAL, BUT HELPS TO KEEP TWRP INSTALLED: Flash Magisk.
That way, stock recovery won't overwrite TWRP when you reboot.
IF YOU WANT TO KEEP TWRP BUT DON'T WANT Magisk:
1) After first boot into TWRP, turn off tablet.
2) Then turn on and hold Volume Up + Power. That will boot you into Bootloader Mode.
3) Go into factory reset and it should boot you into TWRP.
Now, it's safe to boot into the OS.
(TL;DR: Boot into TWRP twice before booting into the OS or else stock recovery will overwrite TWRP.)
Flashing LineageOS:
1) DL LOS from https://download.lineageos.org/P024
2) DL GApps from http://opengapps.org/ (choose 7.1)
3) boot into TWRP
4) go into Wipe, slide to wipe
5) go to Install, click on LOS file > add to queue, click on Open GApps file > add to queue, flash
6) wait til it's done, click "reboot"
7) wait a while (took mine 3 or so minutes to boot)
8) enjoy!

Thanks for the tutorial, I had already dared to flash twrp recovery before you wrote this tutorial...
I believe my bootloader is still locked. And I could not reproduce/ write exactly what I did. But, in my case, just for information, when I want to go back into twrp, I can boot into bootloader (power volume up) and then option 2 reset the device gives me the twrp... I am not sure if that is how you get it, but for me, I still had twrp.
I think i will install magisk after reading your post.

Can you still access fastboot, then at least you can flash twrp as described before in this thread and install from twrp lineageos p024 (lineage-14.1-20180105-nightly-P024-signed.zip) and Open gapps to get google playstore etc , select Arm, (not 64) then version 7.1, then Pico would work.
If you have twrp, you at least can still use your asus... I have found no way to flash original stock... stock must not be flashed from twrp.
Since you mention twrp already used, you can try: turn your device off, then press volume up then the bootloader menu comes, select 2: reset to enter twrp(where it says reset. if you had flashed twrp, that is how you can get into twrp) from there, install lineage os and gapps from micro sd card
My rom is MMB29M.WW_P024-V5.9.4-20170613

I assume this is on stock rom ? What version of magisk would work? I found I can be back at stock with my twrp backup so ..
But magisk 15.3 zip failed to install on stock-
I also used supersu v82 working on stock, or lineageos.
Would you know what magisk works on lineageos?
I like the exsd extension of magisk so I would like to try it on this device, either stock or lineageos

Yes it was. I flashed 15.2 on both stock and LOS. I've heard of some issues with 15.x so you can try .2 or 14.x.

What error was given? What do you see when you connect it to a computer? What does "tablet locked" mean? Would help if you gave some pictures too.
I'm currently in the process of getting the RAW files/service ROMs for AFT but I don't have an ETA on when I'll be able to get that.
No on the tablet I have not installed TWRP and no other recovery. When I go into the original recovery of the tablet there is always the screen with the lock closed at the bottom right and there is no way to show it to the PC even with adb sideload, l 'only program that recognizes me the tablet is Asus flash tool, however, as I have already written the damn ROM in RAW format is untraceable.

Hallo Friend!
I am about to test your guide. I think it is most decent among other guides on the net...
Could you please just tell me if it's gonna work on:
Android 6.0.1 MMB29M
MIUI 8.2.1.0 (MBCMIDL) Stable
kernel 3.10.84-perf-gfe86e7b
bootloader UNLOCKED
Is superSU by default included in the TWRP you gave? No need to download it additionally from somewhere?
What about warning about "dm-verity" on official TWRP website?
This device uses dm-verity!
This means that swiping to allow system modifications will prevent you from being able to boot if you are using the stock kernel. In order to bypass dm-verity's boot prevention, you will have to install a kernel that has dm-verity disabled in the fstab.
Click to collapse
Should this be any concern that the phone will not boot up again? Should this be disabled first?
Is it better to use the TWRP version you provided (3.0.3.0? not listed on official TWRP website? why?) or the lastest 3.1.0.0?

I am about to test your guide. I think it is most decent among other guides on the net...
Could you please just tell me if it's gonna work on:
Android 6.0.1 MMB29M
MIUI 8.2.1.0 (MBCMIDL) Stable
kernel 3.10.84-perf-gfe86e7b
bootloader UNLOCKED
Is superSU by default included in the TWRP you gave? No need to download it additionally from somewhere?
What about warning about "dm-verity" on official TWRP website?

Ok just two questions then, because I'm not sure what you can't understand. Please explain.
1) What Android, MIUI and kernel did you root?
2) Do you have SuperSu.zip in TWRP 3.0.3 by default? You didn't say anything in your guide about downloading it and from where + what version.

This twrp. Img it's for all the versions but only for mi max. Not the prime . This twrp doesn't contain superSU. If I remember correctly. But if on the TWRP contain the super su. Don't say yes. Just flash it like I saying on the guide. Maybe they upload a newest version. You can use the new. I think I put the official website . I will check it.
Ok thanks for the answer. Please check from where I download SuperSu - which version would be best.
Please tell me your Android, kernel and MIUI version that you rooted.

Waiting to tell me if everything went fine with the installation and the flashing
Hey, tried following Your guide to install a new rom last night. Great guide for noobs like me, but it may be worth renaming the thread to something like "How to flash whatever makes You happy on to Your Mi Max". These instructions seem to work fine regardless of what's being flashed. Great job, mate!
So I finally tried it and it was successful for me as well! But I used the latest version of TWRP (3.1.0) and SuperSu (2.79-20161205). Please add a point in your tutorial to upload SuperSU.zip to the phone first, because out of emotion, I forgot... So I flashed TWRP, booted it and then... ups... no SuperSu So I wanted to reboot the phone to upload SuperSU but since only SuperSU patches dm-verity (the thing I was afraid of the most - I told you before), my phone got into boot-loop and didn't want to start. So I just uploaded SuperSU to a memory card, entered Fastboot Mode again with key-combination, plugged the cable, typed "fastboot reboot-bootloader" command and was again in TWRP to flash SuperSu from my memory card.... ufff.
So I would reedit it a bit:
0. Copy SuperSU.zip to the phone/memory card!
1. Go to Settings-About phone-Find the MIUI VERSION, and tap on it for 5-10 times.
2. Go back to settings, sellect adittional settings. click on Developer options, and select enable
3. Find the option USB Debugging and enable it.
4. Download the TWRP recovery from the link
5. rename the file to 'recovery.img'
6. Move the image to the same file where the ADB was installed ( it should be on Computer-> C: -> Adb )
7. Open the adb folder
8. Press and hold the shift key and right click in the folder
9. click on the option "Open command window here"
10. Boot your device on fastboot mode by turning it off, pressing Power and the Volume Down buttons together, and then connect it with your computer
11. First type this command "fastboot devices" to check if your device is into fastboot mode
12. Enter the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
13. Enter the command "fastboot boot recovery.img" - the phone will get disconnected from your PC automatically
14. Your phone is now in TWRP recovery mode (it takes about 30-60 seconds before FastBoot screen switches into TWRP - wait patiently)
15. select Install Zip and click on 'SuperSu.zip'
16. corfirm the flash
17. reboot your device
18. DONT PANIC IF YOU DEVICE WONT TURN ON. Sometimes need to wait 10-20 secs.
Hey, I just got connected with WiFi and new MIUI 8.2.3.0 MBCMIDL wants to be installed, although the phone is rooted with bootloader unlocked. Is it safe to apply the update? Is it goona remove root so that I have to go over the process again?
So I tried the update. First time it said it failed, second time it downloaded the whole ROM after which it rebooted device and TWRP started doing "something" - I don't know what. After that the phone didn't want to boot, and what's even better didn't want to run recovery (TWRP), instead it went into fastboot. What I had to do was to use MiPhoneDrivers from this topic: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-max/how-to/guide-install-global-miui8-root-t3435594 (including MiFlash 2015, because 2016 version didn't want to work properly on my PC) and follow the instruction from official MIUI website to flash from scratch the new ROM MIUI 8.2.3.0 which I did. After that my phone was alive again. I installed TWRP and rooted the phone again. Now I've got MIUI 8.2.30 rooted. :] End of the story so far. My settings left untouched - icons, wallpaper etc. So that would be the way to update MIUI if they prepare a new one.
Is there anyway to root the phone without connecting it to pc?

MediaPad M5 Lite (BAH2-W19) is not booting after flashing custom rom

Hi there.
I screwed up my MediaPad M5 Lite (Wifi edition: BAH2-W19, EMUI 8 installed. It's a treble compatible device) yesterday and need help.
I did the following steps before it all went down the gutter:
1. I successfully unlocked the bootloader using the DC Unlocker method
2. I downloaded the latest a-only AOSP release of "phhusson AOSP 9.0 v119": system-arm64-aonly-vanilla-nosu.img.xz (https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/releases)
3. I rebooted into bootloader and flashed the unzipped .img file to the device. The flash was successful as all 4 steps of copieing stuff tot he system partition said "OKAY"
4. now I used "fastboot reboot" and the trouble started. The tablet froze in fastboot mode. It just didn't restart.
5. I turned it of using a long push on the power button. Then it restarted and got stuck at the start screen. I'll attach a screenshot so you know what I am seeing.
6. From now on I was only able to boot into fastboot mode and into the stock recovery. There I did factory reset and cache formatting several times but with no effect.
7. Only thing that still worked was the eRecovery function in the EMUI stock recovery. With this I was able to download some official firmware from Huawei automatically and the tablet was back to stock
8. This night the OS did an auto update to v215.
9. So this morning I repeated the step 2. from above but with a different a-only custom rom and again it didn't work out
10. I tried to use the eRecovery function to get back to stock, but now the recovery is broken and throws an error "Getting package info failed".
I also tried to download older firmware from https://androidhost.ru/ and flash it with the dload method. Without success of course. While doing it I receive an error "Software install failed!". I will attach a screenshot.
Can anybody give me a hint what I could do next to approach the problem?
Best
rob
Well, you didn't had TWRP as recovery, so no nandroid backup available. From one of my experiences with flashing a stock rom for acer, I had to delete some lines of code from the meta inf folder relating the version of the phone, in order to successfully flash it. Maybe the stock ROM you are trying has some lines of code detecting if bootloader unlocked.
Im also having trouble getting a good tutorial for getting rid of the os or just to have magisk on the tablet
You dowoad latest rom and flash stock via hru and. Twrp search xda

You can install these roms only if you can downgrade to update v177 and lower
Like me you need to Unbrick your mediapad m5 lite
First place need to go back in Fastboot mode.
So UNPLUG , turn off , wait a second and turn on with volume Down , when screen blink release power button and keep volume down pressed a second until Fastboot mode
Or, try to boot in Fastboot with volume down + power AND USB plugged in goes into fastboot, or TWRP if you flashed TWRP to RECOVERY2 instead to RECOVERY.
If doesnt work try the same plug or unplug cuz we have Recovery_ramdisk , eRecovery and eRecovery2
WHEN its okay and you can turn on fastboot mode
Second prepair the img's for unbricking
The LEGIT methods its come back stock rom , then you'll be able to do what you want.
Download Huawei Multi-Tools , Huawei Update Extractor and update.zip of your stock ROM and update_data_full
Then use Huawei Update Extractor to extract
system.img ramdisk.img recovery_ramdisk.img From update.app\update.zip and
Cust.img from update.app\update_full_public.zip.
If you have backup of your userdata.img its the time to put all together in the same directory before go futher.
If all its good , you just need to click unbrick.
Maybe i'll soon do a guide for unbrick and prevent brick , and how install twrp without losing data or encryption data

And just for the complete list:
Volume up + power AND USB plugged in goes into eRecovery (or TWRP, if you flashed TWRP to RECOVERY2 instead to RECOVERY)
Volume up and down + power and USB plugged in forces update via USB (indicated by a little USB-like icon in the recovery circle. The progess bar goes to 5% and waits for input from your PC)

You'd better install TWRP,flash FBE-disabler and format data partition
Anyway, firmware can be found at professorjtj.github.io and I recommend you rebrand and update it to EMUI9 to get better treble compatibility

[Guide] How to install custom ROM (Tested with Pixel Experience and Lineage OS)

I had this device for two days now, one of the first things that I tried was to install a custom ROM and I was surprised of how hard it was to do, so after a lot of trial and error I managed to install those two ROMs so I wanted to share how I did it so nobody has to suffer like I
Okay so I have tried two methods, one worked for Pixel Experience and the other for Lineage OS, there are probably better ways to do this so be sure to reply to this thread if you find another ways to accomplish this!
IMPORTANT!:
1. I did the two of this methods with the stock ROM with a minimal setup (skipping wifi, no google login, no fingerprint, etc).
2.You need to have the bootloader unlocked.
3. Im not responsable if you brick your phone or lose your data, do the following steps if you know what you're doing and always back-up your data!!!
Files used:
TWRP link (Download both the img and the zip)
Pixel Experience link
LineageOS link
Gapps link
Magisk 20.1 link
Encryption patch (patch_no_fde10) link
Method 1 (Tested succesfully with Pixel Experience):
Thanks to ElSuperFullHD for creating an awesome guide in how to install Pixel Experience!
How to install Pixel Experience in Xiaomi mi a3 (Spanish guide)
1. Start your phone in fastboot mode.
2. use fastboot getvar current-slot (Check if phone is in slot a, if it isnt change it to a using fastboot set_active a)
3. Flash custom recovery (in this case I used TWRP) with fastboot flash boot twrp.img
4. reboot using fastboot reboot (NOTE : Before hitting "Enter", long press Vol + on your device until you see the Android One logo. By doing this your device will be forced to boot into Recovery and not into System).
5. When TWRP starts, move and flash TWRP zip (This will make the recovery to stay) and reboot into recovery again (Long press Vol + when the device starts until you boot into recovery).
6. Go to advanced wipe Dalvic cache, Data and System.
7. Install Pixel Experience ROM and TWRP zip again and restart to system.
8. You're done, enjoy!
Method 2 (Tested succesfully with LineageOS):
Thanks to suschmania for your extremely helpful comment, I wouldnt have figured how to install LineageOS without him!
5. Once in TWRP copy TWRP recovery zip into the phone and wipe Dalvic cache, Data, Vendor and System.
6. Install the ROM and TWRP recovery zip (This will make the recovery to stay).
7. Reboot into recovery (twrp shows the warning no os installed, continue anyway).
8. The filesystem will be decrypted (All folders corrupted) dont worries, just go to advanced wipe and wipe internal data, once that's done copy Gapps, magisk and the encryption patch into the phone).
9. Flash Gapps, magisk (Optional) and encryption patch.
10. Reboot to system (It may take up to 10 minutes to start so give it time, if more than 10 minutes passes see step 11).
11. In case of bootlop boot back into recovery and format data (its the one where you need to write yes to format), after its done reboot to system again.
12. You're done, enjoy!
I hope this guide was helpful to you, good luck!
thanks so much for this! Been flashing since andriod 1.6 but couldnt wrap my dumb head around these dual partitions.

Method 2 (Tested succesfully with LineageOS):
Thanks to suschmania for your extremely helpful comment, I wouldnt have figured how to install LineageOS without him!
I hope this guide was helpful to you, good luck!

the "no os installed" is normal, dont worries.
The installation method for pixel experience worked when I installed the old version, it was updated multiple times so probably the process changed, I will update the thread later
This dual slot fuking my mind up.
TWRP asking for password to decrypt data. while first boot in recovery.
also *unable to decrypt FBE device* error while formating data.
"couldnt able to flash Any ROM "unable to partition path/cache" error.
ps. flashed in slot a.
When I install twrp on fastboot it stuck there, I have Android 10 stock, is anything that I can do ? I try like 3 times and always the same

Don't tell him to downgrade. If you downgrade you will lose the use of all sensors or proximity sensor, compass etc and to fix this you need to flash persist.img which will cause you to lose widevine L1 so say goodbye to hd streaming and the like.
Be careful what information you give people if it will cause massive issues.
Its not that straightforward to just downgrade

Indeed, it's not as straight forward, but it's possible without losing Widevine L1 security level; read my experience here, I explained the steps I took ; so far, I came back to v11.0.8.0 QFQMIXM from v10.3.17.0 PFQEUXM after the downgrade, with no issues whatsoever (no format/wipe data); my DRM Keys and sensors remains intact.

Then what to do? I downgraded from Android 10 Stock to Android 9 Stock 3.13.0.PFQMIXM because I soft-bricked my phone. I Flashed the stock ROM using Mi Flash tool. It flashed OK but my MI A3 sensors are not working. Someone said Flash persist.img via TWRP but when I try to flash it asked me in which partition to flash.
Partitions available are:
bluetooth
modem
System Image
Dtbo
Vendor Image
splash
Boot
Install Recovery Ramdisk
I am confused where to flash. If this method isnt suitable as you said then guide me what to do. I have Global Fastboot ROM for Android 9 Version 3.16.0.PFQMIXM for Mi A3 available. Should I flash this using Mi Flash tool? Does it solve sensor issues or not? Please help.

If you are on stock android 9 now then flash an android 10 custom rom and then downgrade to android 9 like you did. Downgrading from stock 10 to stock 9 causes big issues like you are having.
If you did flash persist.IMG you would have caused stuff in your device to break forever without any way of fixing it don't do it!!

I updated it to Stock Android 10 OTA update using TWRP Recovery and re-flashed TWRP and Magisk ZIP using TWRP and now sensors and phone is working fine. I know Android 10 for Mi A3 have some bugs but I decided to live with it until Stable Android 10 update made available by Xiaomi. Flashing Custom Android 10 ROMs have mixed reviews and have bugs so I decided to stay on Stock.
I tried flashing persist.img by mounting Persist partition using TWRP before doing this but nothing happens and sensors didn't worked. Now they are working.

I know you solved it but the reason the other twrp wasn't working for you is because it is built only for Android pie and I'm assuming you have Android 10. That's why you always booted to fastboot. The installer.zip will work with any Android version but the twrp.img files are built using kernels of a specific Android version

Ok thx for the info.
Another question. I didn't understand step 5:
"5. When TWRP starts, move and flash TWRP zip (This will make the recovery to stay)"
Where do I have to move and flash the ZIP? I just skipped this step and now I have the ROM installed which I wanted (PE Plus).
Do I have to do something now or is TWRP installed properly now? Can I fetch this step later?

For you I don't think twrp is installed now. Some ROMs have twrp built in but if not then you have to manually flash twrp every time you flash a ROM or it gets overwritten with stock recovery.
When you flash the twrp.img and boot twrp it isn't actually installed, you are running it in ram and when you reboot it goes out of ram and your left with an un-bootable slot due to your boot slot being messed up from flashing the twrp.img and twrp won't stay installed.
For it to be installed properly you need to flash twrp.zip which will patch your boot.img with twrp and install it.
But as I said everytime you flash a ROM this will overwrite twrp and it will be gone unless the twrp.zip is flashed in twrp before rebooting.
Not as easy as it used to be by just installing twrp once and it is there forever. The new era of Android

How to install PixelPlusUI ROM on Redmi Note 9This guide will teach you how to install PixelPlusUI into Redmi Note 9 merlin or merlin Nfc version.
This is a more detailed and straightforward guide based on the official guide of PixelPlusUI found on their Github page here.
This guide can be applied to other customs ROMs* e.g Pixel Experience etc. Yes, the process is exactly the same for pretty much any custom ROM you want to install to Redmi Note 9.
Installing GuideIn this guide, I will explain to you how and why we follow certain steps, so you can clearly understand every step, process, and risk of installing a custom ROM into a Redmi note 9. And avoid breaking your phone, bricking/hard bricking your phone: no operating system or a possible way to recover it, lost IMEI: can't make calls or receive.
In this guide, I will not explain to you how to unlock your bootloader! you can find plenty of guides online on how to do it and it's overall an easy job.
Before you start you will need to have an unlocked bootloader to be able to modify your system files. Once you have an unlocked phone you can start with the process of Flashing* a custom ROM.
The steps we have to follow are--------------------------- Mandatory steps to be able to install a ROM, 1 - 7
1. Download Platform Tools*, A Custom Recovery*, and a modified VBMeta image, Mi-Flash to be able to downgrade MIUI, and the latest PixelPlusUI ROM which as of today is PixelPlusUI 3.9 for android 11 and PixelPlusUI 4.1 for Android 12.
2. Flash* recovery and VBMeta
3. Reboot into recovery
4. Backup IMEI
5. Downgrade your fastboot* into 12.0.3 version
6. Flash recovery and VBMeta
7. Reboot into recovery
--------------------------- Steps to install pretty much any ROM to Redmi Note 9, 8 - 11
8. Flash the latest firmware
9. Reboot into recovery
10. Wipe Dalvik/Art, Cache, Format Data
11. Flash PixelPlusUI ROM
---------------------------- Updating the ROM, 12 - 13
12. Update from 3.9 to 3.10.
13. Update to Android 12 with PixelPlusUI 4.1 (Optional) (Avoid for now cause it's unstable)
1. Once you have downloaded everything extract Platform Tools enter the folder where it contains all the necessary exes and run CMD inside this folder.
Turn off your phone, press the power and volume down button hold till your phone turns on, this will boot your phone into fastboot. Connect your phone via USB cable to your pc.
In CMD type "fastboot devices" without the annotations. it would output your phone right below with an ID and a fastboot label next to it.
if you are seeing "< waiting for device >" go to windows device manager, you'll find your phone in the other devices section with a yellow triangle. right-click it and click the first option to update the drivers, choose to select locally then Google => Android bootloader interface.
2. Now that we know fastboot is working and detecting our phone we have to flash the custom recovery.
copy the recovery file you downloaded, it should be an .img file, into the Platform Tools folder, in CMD now write "fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img" without the annotations obviously, once its done, copy the vbmeta.img (might be named differently) also into the Platform Tools folder and write "fastboot --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img" as vbmeta.img the file you just copied. if this throws an error do "fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img" instead.
3-4. Now its time to backup our IMEI, if we don't back it up now, there's a change in the next step we lose access to make or receive phone calls, in case this happens we can flash back the IMEI and get it back to work. How do we back it up. While in fastboot, remove the usb cable, and turn off your phone, hold volume up and power till your phone turns on, wait till it boots into Recovery, if you accidentally boot normally into MIUI you will lose the recovery we installed before and it would roll back to stock xiaomi recovery, then you'll have to refollow step 2. Once in recovery, enter your pin and go to Tweaks, And tap the Imei backup, wait till its done, and then go back to the main menu, connect your phone via usb to your computer. your phone would pop up as a storage device, if nothing happens its because of the drives. go to windows device manager, you'll find your phone in the other devices section with a yellow triangle. right-click it and click the first option to update the drivers, choose to select locally then Google => Android ADB interface, Once it pop up enter into it and you'll find a folder called "imeibackup" copy that folder into your computer and keep it safe. this folder includes some partitions as img files and a zip file. the zip file is basically all the files archived into a single file, to be able to flash it later from recovery,
5. Time to downgrade your MIUI fastboot version, we have to do this, because if we don't downgrade we won't be able to install a custom ROM why? well, I actually down know, but pretty much flashing does nothing in the latest MIUI version 12.5 and so on, thankfully you can downgrade the MIUI version in the Redmi Note 9. The best version so far is the MIUI 12.0.3 and you only have to flash the fastboot image, The MIUI you gonna download has to be the same region as your phone e.g my phone is EU/Global i have to download the global fastboot image. if you miss-match them you won't be able to make or receive phone calls. Visit this page Visit this page find your regions "V12.0.3.0" MIUI version click on the very right "download" button, scroll down where it says "type:fastboot" bellow there a button "Download: Full ROM" the file ends with a tgz extension, extract the archive inside you'll find a folder named something like this "merlin_id_global_images_V12.0.3.0.QJOIDXM_20200807.0000.00_10.0_global" copy that folder into the root of your hard drive, rename it into merlin_id_global_images_V12.0.3.0.QJOIDXM
Install Mi-Flash, run Mi-Flash, click select and select the folder you copied into the root of your hard drive, on the bottom right corner flash_all_lock.bat change it into flash_all.bat this will prevent the bootloader from locking again, but it might destroy your IMEI partition, but thankfully we back it up in step 3-4. On your phone, while we left in recovery go to reboot => advanced => fastboot, once you are again in fastboot, connect your phone via a usb cable in to the computer in Mi-Flash press refresh, your phone will show up in the list, if not just follow again the drivers guide at the end of step 1. in Mi-Flash click flash next to refresh and wait till its done, the result should say success. Your phone will reboot and boot back to the old v12.0.3 MIUI version.
6-7-8-9. Now that we downgraded our phone is back to stock recovery and rom. we have to re-do some steps like installing the vbmeta and custom recovery.
Follow again the step 1 and 2. flash recovery and instead this time when flashing vbmeta.img just do "fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img", reboot into recovery mode, by turning off your phone,
and then holding volume up and power till it turns on, now we are back into custom recovery we just installed again, in recovery now we have to flash the latest firmware of redmi note 9, this is necessary for PixelPlusUI to work properly. Download the latest firmware for your region from here, you'll get a zip file, copy the file zip into the platform-tools folder, open cmd in this folder and this time we have to sideload the zip via ADB. in your phone go to advance and then tap on sideload, tap the checkmark to start adb, on your pc in cmd you opened before type "adb devices" if it shows your device similarly as the fastboot devices step we did before you can continue if not, do the driver guide in step 3-4, once you ready type "adb sideload firmwarefilename.zip" replace firmwarefilename.zip with the firmware you downloaded name. once the sideload is done, click the X go to reboot=>advanced=>recovery, we have to avoid booting into miui now so we don't lose our custom recovery, this will reboot your back to recovery.
10-11. Now back in recovery go to wipe and tap the bottom right button Wipe with an arrow. when it's done, go to advanced and then sideload, click the checkmark,
copy the PixelPlusUI_3.9.zip into the platform-tools folder, in cmd you have open from before do "adb sideload pixelplusUI_3.9.zip" wait till its done sideloading.
once it's done, turn off your phone, and boot it normally, you will be greeted with the P logo of pixelplusui, set up your phone normally, if you see "no sim card please insert sim" its possible you flashed the wrong MIUI region or you lost your IMEI, you can flash the IMEI zip you backed up using the recovery's option of sideload or by using the flash option. if this does not fix it, redo all the steps but this time using mi-flash flash the right MIUI fastboot region and firmware region.
12. Updating PixelPlusUI from 3.9 to 3.10 which seems to be the last version before it got discontinued, in your phone, go to settings, system, update, download the update, once its done downloading, do not install it, close settings, hold the power button tap advanced => recovery, in recovery go to flash, go back in a directory and find the folder data/System Update, inside there you'll find a zip file called PixePlusUI_v3.10_something something.zip, flash that file without wiping anything, when it's done, go back and then go to wipe, tap advanced wipe, select only Dalvik/ART Cache and Cache so you don't lose any data. reboot, Done! Never update using OTA auto-update.
13. (For now avoid cause it's unstable) Time to Upgrade to Android 12 with the official build of PixelPlusUI version 4.1
Download the build, Using ADB sideload the latest official firmware, then reboot into recovery, format data and then install the ROM, you can copy it into the device or sideload it.
Every time you want to update or re-install a ROM (Any ROM) to your Redmi Note 9 you have to refollow the following steps:1. Flash the latest firmware, Reboot to recovery after flashing.
2. Wipe Dalvik/Art, Cache, Format Data ( Don't do it if you just upgrade )
3. Install desired ROM.
Platform tools is a suite made by google for developers, it contains adb and fastboot apps which help you with installing/wiping content and doing more development related stuff to your phone.
VBMeta.img is required to be flashed to allow installing custom recoveries if you don't flash it, it would reverse the installed recovery back to the default Xiaomi recovery.
Custom Recovery a custom recovery is basically a separate OS that you can use to factory reset your phone when you can't access the main OS, or in this case, install random tweaks and mess around with system files and partitions.
Flash or Flashing Basically installing system files, partitions etc. can be done using adb, fastboot or from recovery.
Fastboot Similarly to Recovery is an option where you can restore your phone when you cannot do using the recovery, which is why we use it to install the custom recovery in the first place.
Tips for people who want to mess around with custom ROMs.
Every time you want to re-install a ROM, you'll have to re-install the firmware, the best bet is the latest Xiaomi firmware. Also, formating data is necessary to avoid bugs.
Known Bugs:When the fingerprint sensor is touched it won't let you gesture swipe to close an app.
When the NFC is enabled there's a tapping sound on the microphone.
It would be easier to build a custom rom than installing it.

LMAO well, there's too much text to read. but it is totally worth it installing a custom ROM on redmi note 9
I see many people worried about that.
But I really prefer the stock MIUI, because it's so easier to me.
So, I can spend more time on xposed/lsposed and root/magisk.
Anyway, thank you very much for useful guide.
If somebody asks me again, I will send this guide

I've been developing games for android, and the redmi note 9 is my primary phone for it, because it is the middle ground of performance based on the average user. so as long the game runs well most people would be fine.
The thing is, MIUI with its ram management really makes me struggle, minimizing, and multitasking re-launches the game and System UI a lot of time freezes, nothing of those things ever happens with pixelplusUI, that's why I prefer it making me focus mostly on the GPU performance without getting bottlenecked by the heavy and nonoptimized os.
Well, well.
I understand you.
I confess that I've never played nothing at any android I've ever had, since my first android in 2014.
Really interesting to know about that.
I like the ram management because I don't have to close everything by myself.
My brother and my mother keeps everything on memory and management keeps to the system.
My brother has an iphone (sadly) and my mother has a Redmi Note 10.
I agree that the management by MIUI is excessive and should be more customizable.
Hello again, I'm considering to follow this guide.
Does this need no special setup? No SP Flash Tool? No bypass? Just flash in fastboot directly?
Considering the amount of EDL bypass tutorials out there it looks overly simple.
Can you confirm this works for Mediatek Redmi Note 9 without previous setup?
Thanks for the guide.
By the way, are we safe from ARP (Anti Rollback Protection)? I've seen both my current ROM and the target miui have an ARB version of 2 so it should be safe, but still I want to be sure.
Hello, i flashed miui 12.0.3 but it doesnt want to boot, stuck in bootloop, fortunately it boots into recovery, i wiped data and factory reset but it still doesnt want to boot, how do i fix it?
SOLVED: step 5 is faulty, you need to go to stock fastboot using vol - and power and not using the SHRP menu! i was trying to get it to work for 3 hours and i fund the solution, happy flashing!

Nothing faulty there you did not read the whole step. It says "downgrade using MI-Flash software", not using a custom recovery. Read the step properly and completely.

Yea it's safe I've downgraded from miui 12.5.5 to miui 12.0.1 and its totally safe. You can use miflash to downgrade

Edl bypass is only needed of you brick your device or it doesn't boot into fastboot or for taking backup kinda stuff.
Otherwise miflash does the job
thanks.
All works, thanks for the very detailed guide!
Quick question: do I have to flash with sideload or can I flash with SHRP?
I installed miui 12.0.1. will there be any difference if I use miui12.0.1 instead of 12.0.3?

View attachment 5566615How to install PixelPlusUI ROM on Redmi Note 9This guide will teach you how to install PixelPlusUI into Redmi Note 9 merlin or merlin Nfc version.

I'm on miui12.0.1 and want to install pixel experience android 10 with shrp.
Do I need to flash the vendor if I don't want to install pixel experience via sideload and is it necessary to disable avb 2.0 after flashing vendor and custom rom?
I cant boot into the recovery mentioned in this step, what do I do?
