Phone formats micro sd card automatically when mounted - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

Phone formats micro sd card automatically when mounted, without permission. Each time I put the card in it gets wiped. I'm trying to download dash cam footage to my phone but as soon as the card is inserted into the slot, it gets wiped. Can this be stopped?

Use the USB cable to upload directly from your PC. You'll need the Samsung driver for that.
The card may have an incompatible file system on it or data corruption. Bypass using a card with data on it to help understand this behavior.
Try formatting the card in the phone.
If that doesn't work, on the PC use a low level formatting app to format/check it for bad sectors, etc. Then format it again using the 10+.
The issue may be the 10+ either hardware or firmware. Try a -known- good card in it.
The Lexar V30 512gb cards work perfectly.
All I did was format it with the 10+

The card is formatted by the dash cam as fat32 I think. Not sure if the dash cam will recognize it if I formatted using the phone. I'll try.

I would avoid using it like that; download/upload to the card in the phone instead.
It's transfers data at about 1.5 gb per minute via USB2. Also constantly pulling the card can cause trouble. That card tray is not robust. It's far safer to leave it embedded for a number of reasons including ESD.
Using different devices to add data to a card can cause card corruption. A common issue when using multiple Canon cams.
Formatting the card in the device before using eliminates the issue.

I'm not sure anyone is understanding the issue here. The micro sd card is used in my dash camera to record while driving. The camera itself doesn't have an USB interface or wifi. The only way to transfer footage is to take the card out of the camera and put it into my phone, or pc. On pc it works fine, I plug in the micro sd using an sd adapter, and copy the footage. But It's a hassle on the road, so I tried using my galaxy note 10+. However, as soon as I put the micro sd card into the phone, it gets formatted, contents (footage) deleted, and android folders created, automatically. Is there a way to prevent this so that I can open the footage on my phone?
Thank you all for help, it's been driving me nuts.

I do understand. Been there, done it and lost data because of it.
Download to PC only*.
That card swap is the problem.
*a card reader on the C port would probably work.

Tried the reader, also wipes it. Maybe using an sd reader with an adapter and write protect in lock position
I didn't know it's a known issue. Kinda dumb it wasn't resolved.
Thank you!

I've seen it with Canon cams; you never use the same SD card in different cam without formatting it first.
It can corrupt the card...
It's odd the phone auto formats the card. Never saw that before.
Almost like it's some sort of script command on the card.

It's the FAT32 filesystem. If that's all your camera can use, then you will have to first transfer to a PC and then use a USB cable to transfer to your phone OR maybe use an OTG cable to transfer it from a card reader.

[Q] best way to change your SD card ?

Hi guys,
I have a 32g class 10 sd card I bought to use instead of my 16gb class 2 but I have been facing quite some issues in the last couple of weeks
I took the 32g, put it in my win7 PC, formatted it to FAT32, safely removed it and now the arc doesnt recognize it... I just wanted to format it via the settings-> storage -> erase card in order to make sure everything is all peaches and cream before loading 20+gig of music in it.
...
All I want to do is finally transfer all my music (24ish gig) to the new 32g , and back up all my apps and stuff via Titanium Back Up pro.
Simply said, I want to have my 16g card data in my 32g one , with all my beat
Please could someone share some tips or links, I'll do homeworks and have been, but I have been facing so many complications since the last few weeks
Thanks in advance
Does your phone recognize another card properly?
Did you apply a volume name when formatting the 32GB card?
Did you try the 32GB card in the phone before formatting it?
I've done pretty much the same as you with a 32GB card (Kingston Class 4) and had no problem.
Are you sure the 32GB card is good and not a counterfeit?
Try formatting it again to with FAT32, default parameters, short or no volume name. Try copying your files to the card on the PC to see if it actual works.

Thanks I did put a volume name. That might explain it.
Yes the card already worked ( plenty of times ). I have been trying numerous time to transfert the music ( takes forever to transfer 20gig to an SD card , even class 10... ), and had mixed results that always ended up failing ( most of the times because of me... like forgeting to safely remove the sd card from my laptop made the card unrecognizable by the phone afterward...of course I just finished to tranfers the 20gig and was too happy to safely remove it... )
I will try that right now. thanks again
*EDIT*
Bah still same problem I must be doing stupid... SD card is not recognized by the phone. In the settings menu ( storage ) I cannot mount or unmount it and thus format it via the phone itself
That even after reformating it to default FAT32 partition with no volume name using MiniTool Partition Wizard Home
So number 1 priority is getting the SD card to be recognized again by the phone
**EDIT2**
When browsing the card with astro it says problem creating external cache , with root explorer it only says directory is empty. Still can't do anything in the settings menu
Obvious statement, but did you set it to primary?

Or format it wrong, Arc will say it's damaged and say that it has to format it to detect it.
Should fix it, too.

Ya I'd love to get to this point ( which I got in the past hehe ) but at the moment it's still not even recognizing the sd card anymore
still formating btw....
How did you recover your issue?
I think I have a similar SD card problem. But, I encountered it after I did factory reset with SD card erase option selected. I didn't do anything after all. When I connect to PC, on the phone upper bar, there is no notification regarding USB. The middle button seems not working either.
Try formatting the card with this Panasonic SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card formatter.
That's strange why not just do a quick format in Win7 or WinXP, to FAT32? I use a 32GB as well and Arc has no issue with it. Coming from the 8GB, here's what I did.
1. Take off the 8GB from the Arc and placed in a USB reader.
2. Copy off all the files to your PC. I used WinRAR to accomplish this, just archive everything and STORE it (no need to compress so operation is faster). Or you can just use drag and drop plain copying its all the same.
3. Analyze the copied files and remove all unneeded bloats (ie. old movies u don't intend to watch anymore, clear out useless temp files, etc)
4. Copy back the files on your new FAT32 formatted card using the USB reader, then put in your Arc.
If you notice, the entire data migration is done via card reader/USB. Using the Arc as such will slowdown your progress and introduces unnecessary delays.
You can also use usb tool, it basicaly creates a back up image and can be restored to the new sd

Erasing my SD Completely...question

Ok, so I have a HTC EVO 4G and it's currently rooted running a MikRom. Recently, for some reason, when I plug my phone to a Mac or a Windows computer it does not recognize the phone in USB Mode. Specifically on my windows pc, I get a
"USB Device not recognized One of the usb devices attached has malfuntioned etc.. and I went through the process of trying to install the driver but nothing
I have also unmounted the card in settings and mounted it back and still nothing.. What I was going to do was completely erase my SD Card but will that erase my Root however?
It will not erase root.

It's possible. However, before you do that, take the card out ant put directly into a card reader for a computer. This will let you know if the card is bad, or maybe the phone's reader is bad. If the card is bad, you can try error checking it in Windows, and maybe salvage the data on the card.
But if that doesn't work, try re-formatting it. It may help, it may not. If not, new 8gb cards are only a few bucks now.
Ok I have one at home Ill try

Transfering Files Off Phone Problems

i downloaded a bunch of tv shows threw them on my SD card while it was in the note. i get home and go to transfer them from the phone to the computer and after a few seconds i get an error "A device attached to the system is not functioning" what the hell, ive never had this issue on any phone. ok so i thought it might have been my 16gb SD card doing this but it seems every SD card i try keeps giving this error and locking me out of the SD card unless i disconnect and reconnect. anyone else having this problem or know how i can fix it?
If you have an SD Card reader try with that. If not a different USB Cable or possibly a different computer. Did you just get that particular SD Card which fails to connect?
getting an SD card reader defeats the point, i dont want to constanly rip the back off my phone to take the SD card out, my issue is every time i plug the phone in it is recognized and i can see the SD card or the internal storage. ill go and try transfering a file from either storage areas and it gives me a transfer error mid way through, it has done this on 3 different computers with 5 different usb cables, its something to do with the dumb MTP storage crap, anyone know a way i can fix this problem? help please

The suggestion was you try with a card reader to make sure it's not the card itself that may be bad. Several machines ans cables and still no luck may just say "the card is bad".

Or try AirDroid from the Google Play Market. Uses wifi.
Also, some sd cards have poor factory formatting.
For each of my sd cards, I always do a full, non-quick, format, before I use it.
thanks but no its not memory card, or cable related, its poor drivers by samsung, the internet is full of people complaining about this issue with allot of the newer samsung phones. i finally got it to work after spending a few hours installing and uninstalling drivers and countless reboots

Please tell me how you got it right? Ive been struggling with this thing for so long and its such a hangup powering off the phone to take out the sd card!
No issues here, and I've been using the same drivers as my GS2 did. Did you try USB Mass Storage mode?
From my experience my computer will see my card on and off when it was formatted to xfat but after reformatting it to fat32 as soon as i plug my phone in it will automatically detect my card without installing or changing drivers.

What is wrong with my Note 2?! PLEASE HELP

Hi I recently purchased a Note 2 from a guy on craigslist. I checked out the phone at purchase and everything proved to be correct. I didn't expect however that he had the phone rooted. I'm a big fan of rooting phones that don't have a good operating systems already or didn't have Android JB but phones like the galaxy phones I believe don't necessarily need to be rooted. I was pissed because I wanted it with stock rom but I just decided to accept it and unroot it myself. So after a long process I got it unrooted and running the latest stock rom and everything seemed to work except for one thing. When I transfered all of the Music files from my previous phones microSD(16gb) to my new one(64gb) none of the music files worked. All of them wouldn't play and the phone would say it can't open the file or something like that. So I tried formating the microSD and trying to put the files on the microSD again and still the files wouldn't play. I had to format the card through the phone itself and transfer the files through Samsung Kies just for 3/4 of the music to work. I can deal with 3/4 but now when I transfer a video file weather through Kies or straight to the folder none of the files play. When trying to play them nothing shows or sounds it's just black screen, you can fast foward or skip but nothing shows. I never thought I would have this much trouble with this phone but it appears as though there's a virus on the phone or card or something that is preventing video and music files to play. Even when trying to play files from the phone on Windows Media Player or any other music/video player the files don't play. I have also found that whenever I connect the phone to my PC let's say a day after I last connected it, I have to run USB connections on Kies and it has to reinstall the drivers for the phone just to actually see the files on the phone. Please help me I have no idea what to do. Thanks in advance.

So you're saying it's the microSD's format? It has nothing to do with the fact that the phone was rooted and that it might have a bug? Would kind of make sense because when I put the 16gb sd card in the phone all of the music files work. So it's the format, but I need a kernel? I have also found that whenever I connect the phone to my PC let's say a day after I last connected it, I have to run USB connections on Kies and it has to reinstall the drivers for the phone just to actually see the files on the phone. Since you're unrooted, you can't flash a new kernel so you may want to dismiss that last thing.
Have you tried only one 64gb microSD? It seems that your card may be bad or it's not formatted correctly for the stock firmware... I would test out another 64gb card and see if that works since the 16 works just fine.
Edit: Sorry... a little vague... the card needs to be formatted as Exfat if you can do that through Windows, that should work in case the card is actually in good condition.

I don't have any other 64gb microSD cards, the one I have came with the phone. The logo and everything on the card have faded out so I don't know what brand but I think it's sandisk. I don't know at this point I'm thinking it has to be the card because I've tried nearly everything and it's still not working the way I want it to. I formatted it using Windows UGI to FAT32 since thats what you said and that was the same format as the 16gb and sure enough most of the music works with some not working. So I tried putting movies on the card and once I didn't see a preview on the bottom left I knew it wasn't going to work. Seems like the card is bipolar I have a 32gb micro I'll try that, it's brand new still haven't used it, should I just put it in and see if it works or should I format it to FAT32? By the way Thanks again really appreciate your help!

I think he mention phone is rooted sorry if misread that part thats the reason i recommend to flashed kernel that support exFAT, actually as far as i know 64gb microsd card default format is already exFAT and 32 or 16gb is FAT32 and some are in exFAT. If doesnt want to flashed kernel then i recommend format sdcard from computer just plug in from card then right mouse that drive then format and select FAT32 format. If some instance your computer can't read your microsd card and cant format there is chance thar your microsd card maybe bad.

If you can see the files in the player, and you can see the sd card directory using a file explorer, its not the card. I had to add two lines to my system settings file. I'm sorry I don't remember the file name or the content of the two lines. Maybe my comment will jog someone's memory.

I can see the files but they do not work, At this point everything is leading to the problem being the card. I mean my other SD cards work with the phone and have no problem playing music or video files. I've tried nearly everything and the card still continues to malfunction.

I've formatted it to exFat a million times. That what I originally was formatting it to because windows quick format doesn't have a FAT32 option only exFat which was default and NTFS. exFat is not the problem.
It's looking more and more like SD damage...
Considering the fact that other cards work fine...
Copy your media to PC from the SD...and get a new card ?
I know it sucks...
And once the new card is installed...be "very" careful moving those files back as they may be messed up...
I'd pull a few songs from the PC after you copy them over and test them on another card to be sure before loading it to a new and expensive SD...
It sounds like the phone is fine...g

I mean I don't know how the card would react on another phone or maybe someone would use it as their card for their camera I don't know. You're acting like it doesn't work at all and I'm going to try to screw somebody into buying a defective card.

[Q] Micro SD card works on PC but not on S4

Hi,
I have just purchased 64 GB Class 10 Samsung micro SD card with a SD adapter and USB adapter.
I plugged it in to my S4 and everything seemed OK. Copied all of the contents from my old SD. Everything was working fine until I restarted my phone. After restart all of the files were present by could not access them. Some of the files and folders had ~ as prefix. Plugged the card in my PC and the files were corrupted. Recopied everything and tried several times again. The same outcome. Reformatted the card to exFAT and to FAT32 both from my phone or my PC using several available programs. No success. Whenever I unmount the SD card or restart the phone the files get corrupted. So I figured the card is broken. So I decided to test it only on my PC. Copied lots of stuff to it (music, movies etc.) and started using it on my PC. I have mounted/unmounted it on my PC probably 100 times and it works just fine. So that means that the card is fine (or am I wrong???). Also tried it to plug it with the usb adapter into my TV. It says that usb disk is empty.
The files only seem to get corrupted when I place the card in my S4 and unmount it/restart the phone. The card works just fine on my PC.
Does anyone else have this issue?
I am running a rooted 4.3 Android OS.
Thank you!
You have to partition the card into 32GiB chunks. So make two, 32GiB partitions and it will work fine in your S4, except it will show you have two external sd cards.

If you don't want to make two seperate partitions on your external microSD card then do the
following:
Remove your external microSD and plug it into a card reader and or the adapter which came
with the card then plug it into your computer.
Make an empty folder on desktop of computer and copy all files and folders from the microsd
card into the empty folder.
Format your external microsd using this windows utility and copy all the files/folders back onto
the card from your computer and replace it into your phone.
Here is the direct download link for this fat32 formatter which is a windows utility:

By doing the above your external microSD card should work fine in your phone.
Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. I did as you suggested and it worked for some time. I mounted/unmounted several times and it seemed fine. Then did a restart and the files were corrupted again.
Why does the card need to be divided in 2*32GB in the first place? Isn't the S4 suppose to support 64 GB cards?
Your suggestion seemed to isolate only part of the problem. It remains only the restart. What can be associated with corrupting data on sd card and android restart?

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately it didn't work. I tried similar thing with other software also (Minitool partition wizard, Panasonic SD formatter, etc.). When I unmount/mount or restart data corrupts

No, it depends on your kernel if it supports a certain FS. I am not sure why your files are being corrupted other than one, your ROM isn't unmounting your card properly on restart or two, your card has issues. Again, I am not sure.

In that case do you suggest I try changing kernel? Do you think that might help? My kernel version is 3.4.0-2082040 if that means something. Do all S4s come with the same or different kernel? Will it help If I unroot or maybe install other ROM for different country or different operator?

All the stock S4's come with the same kernel, so if your S4 is stock then it's not a kernel issue.
Have you tried any other external microsd cards, if not that's what I would do next.
Most of the better microsd cards have either a 2-3 year or a lifetime warranty.
Good luck!
I currently use my old 8GB sd card with no problems whatsoever. My S4 is rooted. Does that change the kernel? Should I unroot?
