Hi,
Do you guys know if the phone supports AOD or is the setting somewhere else?
I can't seem to find it.
It has an LCD display, so doesn't support AOD. You might force it with root, but power consumption will be extremely high and not worth the effort.

Does anyone know if this is possible, either in Android Wear or on the watch itself? Right now the backlight remains on (but very dim) and drains the battery too much to make it worth using, but I think it would still be visible enough with it off entirely.
Hello, I just switched from the Z2 to the Z1 Compact. I love it so far, but the one thing that still bugs me is the Content Adaptive Backlight effect or whatever it's called, which turns the brightness up when there's light content on screen and turns it down when there's dark content. Is there still no way to eliminate it? I did a bit of searching and found out that it's present in other Snapdragon 800 phones like LG G2 and OnePlus One.

I haven't noticed anything like that. I just turn off any auto functions in display settings, and my screen seems to stay consistent. You can switch off 'adaptive brightness', and I think the other one is called 'ambient display' or something. Just turn them both off.
It happens with adaptive brightness on or off, regardless of the brightness level set, and ambient display wasn't implemented in all Lollipop devices, Z1C included.
Previous threads on the subject, that remained unresolved:

I've created an app that wakes ambient display when you take the phone out of your pocket or if you have the phone face down and turn it over. The app is in addition to Google's ambient display and does not change your lock screen in anyway.
I added a few other paid features for lift to unlock, wave to unlock, pulsing at an interval, and battery percentage display on the ambient display.
I have a thread going on the Pixel XL forums and a number of people have been testing it out. I think it's stable enough to start spreading the word.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or run into any problems. Thank you!

I'm interested, but it appears your link is dead.
Edit: found it in play store. Went ahead and got pro for lift to wake.

Thank you! I fixed the link...cut and paste truncated the link.
I'm testing it since four days and can absolutely recommend it.
No battery drain here at all. Proper functionality and even more options with every new version.
Keep up the great work.
Edit: do you have PayPal? I'm gonna hook you up with a beer.

Haha, thank you. The app support is more than enough thanks!
Just bought the pro version. Coming from a note 7 and missing that ambient display, this great app will do.
Looks great.
Thank you very much sir
Trying it on a Nexus 6p. So far i'm loving it.
Bought pro, thanks!
So I've done some limited testing with the app white listed from doze and so far it improves the responsiveness significantly. I don't know the battery impacts yet, but if it's not noticeable I'll add code to prompt users to white list it.
Other upcoming changes:
Advanced settings to adjust wait times for how long the phone has to be in your pocket or laying flat before a wake can occur.
A pulse option that initially pulses faster when a notification comes in, and progressively shows down until the timeout.
Possibly change in lock screen battery indicator appearance.
Filter on laying flat thresholds. I suspect the accelerometer incorrectly reports the phone tilted while it is laying flat on occasion.
Just bought the Pro version, thanks for the nice app.
Unfortunately the ambient display doesn't light up on my Pixel if the phone is unlocked, e.g. by SmartLock. Typically, I have the phone lying next to me on the desk at work or at home und the phone is unlocked by location based SmartLock. This is where I would like to see incoming notifications without touching the phone. Do you think this is possible to implement?

I'll look into that. I've got an idea that may work.

Doesn't work for me.
More important (maybe only for me): the screen doesn't light up without interaction if the phone is unlocked by smartlock. That's the same behavior as with the ROM build in ambient display feature. It only lights up the screen when the phone is locked.
Thanks a lot for looking into that. This would overcome the disappointing original Google ambient display implementation!
If i can help somehow (testing,...) please let me know.

Do you still have ambient display enabled in settings? Mine is working with the location smart lock turned on and ambient display enabled.

Tested again..
Ambi-turner enabled.
In display settings
Ambient display : on
Display timeout : 15sec
Security settings:
Pin lock screen after 10min
On/off button locks immediately
(I'm not on an English version, hope the translations are understandable)
The phone is in an area where is unlocked by location based smartlock.
Test 1: wait for 15sec until the screen switches off, wait another minute, send me an WhatsApp from 2nd phone: i hear the notification sound, screen doesn't turn on. If i turn on the display using the on/off button i am on the home screen.
Test 2: switch off the screen by on\off button, (i can hear the lockscreen notification) and send me a WhatsApp from another phone. I hear the notification sound, screen turns on and shows the message. If i turn on the phone by on/off button I'm on the lock screen.

Just bought pro - nice job!
I' ve just tested it on my Nexus 5 with PureNexus 6.0.1 rom. PN has ambient display function in settings but it doesn't work because Nexus 5 doesn't have pick up sensors or pocket sensors. Therefore I've been looking for some solution how to wake it, for example cmactions-wave to wake or similar. For the previous period I've been using GravityBox but it's battery hungry.
I see now that ambi-turner works also, so testing it ATM...
nice work...

Thank you. I'm posting an update soon. I'm testing a new mechanism that is waking the screen up much more reliably than the current version.
I don't know if it is a bug but if I disable the moto display, the screen will not turn on when a notification comes in. Is there a way to enable the default Ambient Display?

Seems I overlooked this post, I was wondering the same thing!
Was anyone ever able to get stock ambient display (not Moto Active Display) working?
I ave tried all configs and disable all moto app with no success, when i disable the moto display app the ambient display setting appears but the phone doesn't wake when a notification comes in... ¿Maybe it needs a root thing, xposed or something else?
I was also hoping for a solution to this, I would love to use ambient display.
Clock... etc... on AOD I see wrong. There is little brightness. Both when. Sometimes small brightness, sometimes more brightness. Why? My Adaptive Brightness is Off ...
On YouTube video, I can see (Galaxy S9) settings (brightness) by tapping the clock. It doesn't work for me. I have a new "A50" and I don't like this.
Do you know an application that solves this (brightness, font size)?
Thanks a lot...
(Samsung Galaxy A50, SM-A505FN/DS, A505FNXXU1ASBG/A505FNOXM1ASBG/A505FXXU1ASBB)
I am not sure but you understand it in the wrong way.
AOD may be set in 2 modes:
-always on
-on upon screen tap ( so maybe this is what you saw on S9 video)
There is no setting how bright it is - just factory default
BTW if you could set the brightness up it will eat battery like hell
Yes-I have the "show always " mode turned on. On YT video I see "Brightness adjustment". I do not see this function on "A50"... Apparently I have a different version of "AOD ".
EDIT: + The clock color sometimes changes spontaneously. And the brightness is sometimes smaller, at other times the brightness is larger...
EDIT2: I Found that in daylight AOD shines a lot. There is little light In the darkness. This dependency cannot be manually set. Never mind. That's O.K.
I just got the A50 and have the same issues. The always on display - when set to "show always" is bright enough when in a well lit area, but when theres not enough light its too dim. It changes brightness level automatically. I have the adaptive brightness turned off. I have tried various setting and still the same result. I have the S10e and there is a setting to adjust the brightness level on the AOD, but it appears to be absent on my A50. I have also noted that the latest version on my A50 (AOD) is 4.2.51.3 and on my s10e it is 5.1.38.3. Should it be the same on both devices ? Any advice would be appreciated.
AOD uses adaptive brightness but its frequency is a lot less than normal usage.

I'm quite sure that is the intended behaviour for the AOD (automatic color and brightness changes throughout the day) to avoid burning the AMOLED panel.
In fact, even though modern OLED displays have improved its durability a lot, it's still not recommended to keep the screen on at all times in the same spot, especially under the sun.
Can anyone tell me the latest version of their AOD on the A50 - it is under settings under AOD - About Always On Display - that will tell you the latest version installed.
