Download the full rom
I downloaded the full rom from Asus website, the update was fine just dropping it at the root of internal storage. My is a chinese converted to WW firmware/fingerprint. All working fine so far.
I wonder where the VOLTE settings are, I find strange they are making it available for some regions only. Why not just make it available to everyone in any region? I can;t get my head around why VOWIFI and VOLTE is taking so long to get sorted. My oneplus 5 had this working fine 3.5 years ago!

If you're tencent to global (converted).
-locked Bootloader
-finger print should be WW
And flash the Full ROM not OTA
my bootloader was unlocked. Fingerprint was converted to WW. Not gonna flash OTA again if i can rescue my device.
Should I lock bootloader always before doing update ? I prefer to use rooted for blocking ads and easy backup/restore for titanium backup.

Unlocked bootloader but not rooted you can update through local upgrade. If you're rooted just unroot then after update root again
Ok, flashed full rom over twrp and rooted. Everything seem's fine now. Just dont pass safetynet test.

No need to unroot to update, or remove twrp. There's a couple of options.
For all instances FULL zip is required, as far as I'm aware
1. For those of you that are only rooted: (Recommended to disable magisk modules) Download the full zip, move to root of internal storage and reboot. System will detect and prompt to update, click update. Wait until it finishes but DON'T click 'restart', instead, click 'restart later'. Go to Magisk manager. Click 'install' for Magisk. Click the last option 'install to inactive slot after OTA'. Click confirm force flash. Reboot when prompted. Done - root kept intact.
2. For those rooted with TWRP you can either; A)
- Disable all magisk modules;
- Put rom.zip, twrp installer.zip and magisk.zip on your internal storage;
or B)
If you want you can also update a stock rom from phone settings with local upgrade:
- Update the Rom WITHOUT REBOOT;
- Open Magisk Manager;
- Menu/modules/+ button/select the twrp installer.zip and flash it;
- Always in Magisk Manager, click on Install/Install/Direct Install;
- Again in Magisk Manager, click on Install/Install/Inactive Slot;
- Reboot.
For all instances FULL zip is required, as far as I'm aware
Thanks to @mauronofrio for A and B and for all his (or hers lol) efforts generally

I'm on the stock ROM (Build number: OPNS27.76-12-22-3), rooted via Magisk and have the latest TWRP as my recovery. Say, an OTA update arrives (hopefully) in the future, could I just sideload it from my computer via adb? I know that downloading the file and installing it using the phone won't work as I'm on TWRP (it requires stock recovery). Erfan Abdi's website allows the download of the OTA zip from Moto's servers if one wants to sideload it via adb (https://erfanoabdi.000webhostapp.com/). If not, how can I apply the OTA update?
no you can't apply the ota with a custom recovery as you made changes on partitions that ota.zip check if has some changes and i believe twrp is not ready to aply ota in any way because every manufacture has a way to make changes by ota so its almost impossible to made a generic way to apply ota to all the devices that twrp suports

flash stock, take the ota's via ota, and then mod system. At least that's what I do. pita but it works. I back up with TBPro and copy backup to PC (ota clears internal storage) before I do that so rebuild is pretty quick.
my last smartphone is just uninstall magisk and flash stock recovery to aply ota, but i never tried this on moto z play, so you should do a clean install of stock rom first, because i can't say with sure if it's gonna work as my last devices stops update on marshmallow , and magisk that i used on this phone is older

there some things that have be analised here, first when you unistall magisk, the safetynet verification is gonna fail, and pogo can broke, and pogo is especially case, the pogo app checks storage to see if has some folder related magisk, that in most cases are left there to backup. and the ota check partition if you change something ota fails too.
stock ota is horrible to install if you have some changes in the device, so in almost all case, especialy if don't have advanced knowledge about all android work, the recomended is reflash system in same version that you are, and after this update.

a) right. what I said. uninstall magisk is dirty - it doesn't clean everything up..
b) I could suggest TBPro to back up your system. Then be sure to copy that backup to your PC because flashing the stock will wipe internal storage. Then flash stock. Then use TBPro to restore stuff. At least that's sortof what I do.
what i did to update to latest security patch:
- flash uninstall magisk zip

August security patch is out so I tried these steps.
It didn't work. While I sideloaded the update through adb, it showed that the system was modified and that it was mounted as R/W 40 times, also showing the most recent date and time that it happened. Keep in mind, I flashed the Magisk and Xposed uninstallers and cleared Dalvik and cache before the attempt to sideload.
I just flashed the original June build (omitting the 'fastboot erase userdata' command to save myself from a potential pain in the ass) and then did I proceed to sideload the update via adb. After that, I flashed the latest TWRP and rooted using the latest Magisk (and f2fs fix as well). My data is intact (except for the root modifications and Magisk modules) but that is miles better than starting from scratch off a factory data reset.
I guess I answered my own question, then . You can't

Do you have an idea how to easily display if system is modified (when, how often etc.)? I'd like to know if OTA could succeed after restoring boot partition for some Moto X Play and Moto Z Play with installed Magisk.

Nope, sorry. Though, I failed to mention that I did flash the original boot.img after encountering the error and tried again. You guessed it, it still failed. Maybe try flashing both boot and oem to see if it would work?
I have a OnePlus 5T locked and unrooted phone having OxygenOS 5.1.7 installed. I am new to rooting and related kinds of stuff. Can someone help me to give some instructions to install Magisk in my device? I know the below steps, but at the same time, I am having some questions in my mind.
1. Unlock bootloader - I saw some commands here to unlock bootloader - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74504347&postcount=4 - looks like these are outdated, last updated on Dec 2017. Are those work today also?
2. Install TWRP recovery - I heard that, OxygenOS 5.1.7 is having Project Treble supported. Can I use the same TWRP recovery mentioned in the above link?
3. Root using Magisk or SuperSU. What is the difference? What is systemless root? Anyway, I need to install Magisk Manager finally - Please suggest a way.
4. And the last one, How do I unroot my device if something goes wrong? Or is that possible?
5. I don't want to install any custom ROMs, I am fine with OOS.

1. Yes the unlock commands remain the same till date.
2. Use the latest bluspark twrp which has the treble support, link mentioned is fine and if you need the direct link, its here
3. Use the latest Magisk as SU is a dead project now.
4. Whenever you want to unroot just dirty remove/uninstall all the mods, dirty flash the latest stock rom > Factory reset in recovery and lock the bootloader. I did a post here for the 6T and it should work the same way on 5T.
5. You can stay rooted on OOS no need of custom roms any more :good:
Let me know if you want to know anything else, Thanks.

1. Yes, but your phone will download the whole firmware at each update instead of the ota.
2. Yes
3. Yep you can.
4. Yes of course, but some apps will detect root. So you will have to use Magisk Hide (inside the Magisk Manager) to hide root from these apps.
Note : I didn't use OOS anymore but it seems to me that OOS overwrites root everytime you update, so keep in mind that you will have to reflash it everytime

1- Yes, but you will recieve full sized zip (1.5+)GB automatically in rooted OOS. Incremental small sized ota won't work in case of root, and don't bother with it.
The downside of updating full whole zip is that you will loose root & twrp recovery after the update. So keep in mind, you will re-install both of them later.
2- I haven't tried beta, but i am sure yes
3- any switch between those requires clean flash in TWRP (wiping dalvik cache, cache, data, vendor and system). So, make sure to have backup in safe place.
4- yes, as long as you passed the safety net in Magisk. Magisk has a feature to hide root on certain apps of your choice, so you can use banking apps later
All my magisk installed whether in oos stable or custom roms, passed the safety net out of the box. So I haven't faced issues there.

Unlocking the BL doesn't stop OTA updates until you mess with System and Vendor partition which is flashing TWRP, Magisk or a custom rom/kernel. Hope it clears your doubt.

You will receive OTA update notification, but it won't flash as you don't have stock recovery. What you can do is, you can go here (https://www.realme.com/in/support/software-update) and download the ozip file and flash it on TWRP. Make sure you have latest TWRP installed which supports ozip.

One question. Why is it necessary to deactivate the magisk module before the update? Maybe somebody knows. I forgot to disable some of them without any issues. Just out of interest, as it is mentioned or recommended from time to time.

Some of the modules may not be compatible with upgrade, causing issues like bootlooping. That makes it a pain in the butt, to enter recovery and and delete the module.
There isn't a recovery yet (that can delete Magisk mods). Some mods might copy system files during installation to mess with them. Keeping the module means you might carry over system files from an older system version, causing trouble with new updates. Hence: turn them off before the update (except for stuff where you know it won't cause harm, like systemless hosts). And _reinstall_ those that modify system stuff, e.g. Qualcomm Wifi Bonding. This won't e.g. cause boot loops, but on my sons phone wifi was dead until I reinstalled the module.

Okej thanks for the info. I'l will wait for when we have root
Installed C.44 EU over C.38 EU using local update app, latest Magisk Alpha, and keep root using the Magisk OTA option before rebooting after the update.
No need to unroot to upgrade
i went from c.39 to c.40 the day before yesterday. i used mlgmxyysd's tool to flash c39's stock images to the device then updated through the updater.
found the flashed boot image, flashed it (just like the old way, fastboot flash boot.img).
i then installed c.44 ota, went to magisk, installed it to the inactive slot, rebooted, and it ran fine.
with magisk alpha, you don't need the toolbox anymore (i believe)
Anyone have problem with haptics on c44? Haptics feedback is just missing on some menu actions.
