I searched a new phone with good ROM support. After some readings of XDA's threads, I just bought RN8Pro, waited a week for unlocking and tried few ROMs.
It ended up that some newer RN8Pro has a slighty different front camera's hardware that is not actually supported by custom ROMs, as it has been discussed in some threads (like this one : https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...xperience-official-aosp.4059977/post-83570951 )
I didn't saw this information before buying, so maybe it is useful that this will be more visible to people who want to buy this phone.
If you have some news about fixing front camera, feel free to respond.
That is a problem that I also face
The front camera does not work on any MIUI with Android 9. But on MIUI with Android 10 it works well...
The problem is that every ROM requires me downgrade to MIUI with Android 9.
Same problem here.
Bought 2 devices 2 weeks ago, unlocked a few days ago and installed crdroid 6.11.
Front camera is not working, GCam crashes on start.
On another device, bought in october the front camera works well with GCam and other camera apps.
Hopefully someone finds a quick fix.
If this camera is a different model, can we identify it using AIDA64?
In AIDA64 -> Peripherals , mine says Samsung ISOCell S5K3T1. I don't know if this is the new model.
EDIT: I read that it's a new revision of the same model so I think this "method" won't work.

Did your front camera work in custom roms?
My sensor is too Samsung ISOCell S5K3T1 and not work on Android 9 with MIUI and custom roms.
Same case for me, the front camera is "Samnsung ISOCell S5K3T1" and I installed evolution X 4.7 and everything works except the front camera, how sad, I haven't found a way to make it work. I asked in an official rn8pro telegram channel and they only told me to stay in Rom Stock with miui until Xiaomi releases the firmware code for these new sensors. The newer rn8pro devices are the ones that have this problem since their front camera sensors are new.
It seems I have the same problem. I wasn aware of that when buying!
I tried the Roms:
Pixel Experience
Evolution
crDroid
Same result on all Roms, everything works except the front camera. As soon as I install another cam app like Gcam, it crashes.
I wish I knew this before buying Note 8 Pro
I hate MIUI, I was going to flash custom ROM as soon as possible. But... Revolut doesn't work without selfie camera. I hope I can relock bootloader and return the phone.
The strange thing is that no custom rom developer can solve this problem
+1 for me being a victim of this new front camera module!
Given the situation right now I/we have to compromise. Working front camera with MIUI (it's unusable for me and I've tried) or no working front camera + custom ROM.
I chose the latter (Pixel Experience 10).
If I do need a front camera I'll have to get my LG G2 (LineageOS 16.0).
Either Xiaomi releases the code for the new front camera module or it leaks somehow. Whichever comes faster.
Compass.
I have also the same Problem.
Samsung ISOcell S5KGW1
Same problem here. Does it need just a rebuild with a more recent kernel? Anybody have any advice how to start that?

Same question here!
What I can confirm that the newest Pixel Experience ROM has the selfie cam working perfectly, I am just not a friend of that level of Google integration.
So I guess we have to wait for one of the other maintainers to take a stab at this, or try it ourself ...
I guess it's a lot more than linking some new libraries, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, maybe a howto, that would be much appreciated.

The front camera is working with Pixel Experience 11 (Build: 16th of march of 2021).
I installed Pixel Experience 11 today and the front camera works (didn't crash so far either).
Compass.
Front camera is also working on HyconExperience 1.0.
Any suggestions for fix nusantara 3.1
Any one try this
For Devices which have new camera sensor and not working front camera in any Non Cfw roms.
This fix will make your front camera working in any Non Cfw roms.
Steps:- go to twrp and flash
1. MiUi12- kernelsupport
2. boot.img
If you feel crashing only than flash
3. Permissiver

as the title says, recently when I open my camera app, the rear camera is unable to focus no matter what I do, the same happens with snapchat and other camera apps. I was wondering if this is an issue within the rom or if its a general OP3 issue and if anyone could help me attempt to fix it.
I'm on SultanXda's rom with the 19th of Feb patch. (would post this on the rom's page but my account is too new to reply on that)
Thanks in advance
Even I have this kind of issue and I am using resurrection reimx ROM. The camera is not focusing. Neither in the camera app nor in the apps like snapchat.
Hope someone has a solution for this.

Just tried with rom-delieverd-snapcamera, and the focus is just working fine.
Just touch the screen, where to focus and snap.
Maybe you can give us some hint to reproduce?

sadly touch focus isnt working on my phone, starting to think it might be a hardware issue instead since it just suddenly started happening. I'm not too sure what is different from when it was working either :/ just that one day touch focus stopped working and auto focus stopped as well.
So you can wait for an update, or any other reported issues with focus on sultans rom oder you might try another rom, if it still exists, to make sure, its not a HW issue.
Ehy guyz, it is an hardware problem. U can fix it opening the phone and using some scotch to maintain in place the camera. Or send it in RMA. Or use a magnet near the camera, out of the phone's case as is possible to see in attached photo
Hi everyone,
So I'm thinking about switching from MIUI to a custom ROM, and I was wondering if it is possible to use the second camera with custom ROMs like Lineage or RR (or whatever ROM out there). I don't know much about camera protocols and as far as I know there is no standard one for dual cameras, so I don't know if just installing Xiaomi's camera on a custom ROM will take use of the second camera. (I don't even know if this precise camera app is installable from anything else than MIUI). Also, I've myself not encountered any camera app out there that can take advantage of the whyred dual camera.
Of course I can rely with some AI cameras for lens blur and portrait mode, but I don't know, I just don't like the concept of losing the utility of an hardware piece just because the software can't "afford" it.
Thank you for reading, guys.
Interesting question! And even more important, how is the quality compared to miui?
Have you tested it with open camera??

PS. Please dive through the forums for answers, before opening a post.
Edit: can you guarantee, that your stock camera ain't just for show? I mean did you open it up and stick a multimeter to check?
Edit_2: pls don't try...dual camera are actually working, you'll notice a difference once you compare a stock MI camera app with GCam
And don't try sticking up a multimeter up your Mobile

The phone in question is RN5 AI Dual camera, NOT Mi A1! Totally different phones. The AI comes with SD636 chipset, the Mi A1 with SD625 chipset. The ROMs are not compatible at all.

It is not a rom, he is telling you to flash.
But a Ported Mi A1 Camera app, that works across custom roms.
It will actually allow use of the Redmi Note 5 [WHYRED] dual cameras in manual mode of the app.
Also the AI in the device name, is used incorrectly by some sites. Not the official name or appendage for the device.
Edit: - Last time i checked, no one has ported the MIUI camera from RN5 yet.
Was trying out different Gcam versions and stumbled across this one, which seems to work perfectly on my A2 Lite with the January security patch!
https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/GCam_6.1.021_N7P_test2.1_defaultjpg.apk
Motion Photos, Night Sight, Hdr+, everything seems to work, but your mileage may vary!
Update- Front camera Night Sight doesn't seem to take a photo, but also doesn't crash the app
Update- This version of Gcam won't save photos taken with HDR+ enabled. They process forever. Makes this GCam version not very useful, but it's the best one for the A2 Lite I've been able to find.

What's the point of opening a new thread for this? You mentioned that it doesn't work in your edits. Why would you share it here before even testing the app?

Hi! I'm sorry for making a post in a weird or wrong way, I'm new to XDA and was unsure of where/how else to post it.
It does mostly work. Hdr works well on rear camera, but not front camera. Night Sight works but can randomly be iffy. Blur and other modes work. It's very possible that just changing some of the settings may iron out some of the bugs, I'll keep experimenting with it.
It's also not that I didn't test it, there were just certain settings and combinations of features I didn't try. I made a post because it was working relatively well and I got excited to share it with other people who may benefit from it. I'm not going to test every feature or settings combination, but other people should know about it so they can try it, at least! I just updated my post with the bugs/broken features I found!
With that said, if you think this is something that shouldn't be here, and should be deleted, a comment on a different thread, etc, how can I delete/move it?
Thank you and I'm sorry for the inconvenience!

Hi,
I installed the Bliss rom based on Android 9 because is the only recently updated Pie rom based on which I can install and run the official google camera version 6.1.021.
It works fine with video, camera, night sight but there aren't others pixel 3 camera features like the portrait mode / bokeh and photobooth.
Why?
I read on a blog that changing the device info in build.prop file to:
ro . product . model=Pixel 3
ro . product . name=blueline
ro . product . device=blueline
The camera app recognize the device as a Pixel 3 and it enables all missing features.
I tried to do this but the app crashes when I open it.
someone tried this method? I'm not interested to use other camera mod as workaround to get this features, i'm interested to get them on the original camera app.
Someone have any suggest?
Thank you guys!
Bye :highfive:

How about "I don't want spend hundreds dollars to buy a new phone until mine works perfectly and I may have all features of the new one just with few little tricks"?
Well, you may not want to, that's fine, not making your decisions for you. But even if you do get the original pixel gcam on your n5x, the performance will be bad. So it's better if you either use the available gcam mods, or just buy a pixel 3.

Hi,
Try doing the same on a pixel experience aosp based rom.
You can get it from here download.pixelexperience.org
Hi, I was on the official build (MIUI) of Note 5 pro, however the pictures seemed like they were oil paintings, and did not look good at all, so I decided to install a custom ROM, hoping it'd help solve this issue, since the picture seemed to be using the beauty mode, even though I turned it off. I installed the pixel experience ROM, however the picture quality still is pretty bad, I was wondering if there is any custom ROM which would help solve this problem and give a good picture which doesn't look like an oil painting, lol.
Thanks in advance.
