Bricked Pixel XL - Help! - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

My wifes Pixel XL bricked tonight. Out of the blue it started rebooting, while she was using it. It started up, but then froze shortly after entering into the OS.
I went into recovery mode and performed a factory reset, it started up normally but half way through the setup guide is froze again, and went into a bootloop. And that's where I'm at now.
I have performed two more factory resets, but it never even boots into the setup guide anymore. Just straight to bootloop. The vast majority of times I can't even get into recovery mode anymore, when I try to it just gets into the bootloop. If I leave it turned off for a while, sometimes I can get it into recovery mode though.
Fastboot works, but the bootloader is locked and usb debugging isn't activated (I assume) so I can't flash anything through there or unlock the bootloader.
Considering how it started, and that the bootloop returned like 5 minutes after the first factory reset, I assume there is hardware problems, right? But is there anything more I can do, if we suppose that it's just soft bricked somehow?

Same issue here, would love to see if we could put our heads together with some folks. I have been wrestling with a Google Pixel XL on and off since August that has been doing roughly the same thing. Pixel is the direct-from-Google version (NOT Verizon), bootloader is locked, OEM unlocking is not enabled.
- Began rebooting consistently
- Would boot into OS for a limited amount of time then freeze and reboot, or freeze on G logo w/ loading bar then reboot
- I had been systematically uninstalling apps and downloading data to "cross them off my checklist" (probably a dumb idea in hindsight, if storage is corrupted)
- sometimes being left alone would allow the device to boot, seemed to only work within certain range of battery charge, perhaps until it heated up a certain amount?
- Will consistently boot into bootloader w/ Vol Down button
- Used to be able to consistently boot into Recovery from bootloader, but now choosing Recovery Mode will load Google logo and begin bootlooping.
- On one instance that Recovery Mode successfully booted, attempted to update via ADB. ADB seemed to install the update to 94% in PowerShell, and showed "success = 0" or something similar, which I take to be a failure lol.
- Much functionally in fastboot other than showing devices, rebooting, and getvar seems to require the bootloader to be unlocked, which I cannot do without access to the OS.
Things I've tried:
- sideloading update via ADB (failed the one time I was able to get recovery to load)
- unlocking bootloader via fastboot (requires oem unlocking in OS, so not successful)
- changing a/b partition via fastboot (unlocked bootloader required)
Here's a dump of getvar, seems like maybe one of the partitions is shot:

Is my phone dead? Doesn't boot, freezes, errors on wiping or formatting, ...

Hello,
Since friday evening, I cannot restart my phone, and I don't know what to do. I have wiped everything, formatted everything, reinstalled the rom dozens of times, and it never works... sometimes, it gets stuck on the HTC logo, sometimes on the android updates at the first launch, sometimes during the first setup...
You can find a little historic of a previous episode in this thread.
It was a few weeks ago, one day my phone freezed several times, so I decided to reinstall it from scratch, but it didn't work (it freezed on the lock screen), and it seemed that installing the rom (mimicry) without the Virtuous OC Daemon solved my problem. Everything was fine for several days, but... last friday, since everything was fine, I tried to re-activate the Virtuous OC Daemon... Everything was fine, until the evening, when my phone freezed and I could never get it work since that moment... My comments at this moment can be found here.
During the week-end, I have, again, tried everything I imagine possible, from the 4EXT Recovery, reinstalling the rom with ou without each mod, without success...
When I go to tools / wipe or format -> EXT4 / format cache, I get this:
Code:
Formatting /cache...
E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p27
E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p27
Formatting cache completed.
Dunno if it is a real problem...
Anyway, I don't know what to do, I am afraid my processor is dead or something like that, which would explain the freezes, but it could be something else, I don't know what...
Thank you in advance for your help, I really cannot afford to buy a new phone right now!
Sounds like emmc fried issues. Can you get into bootloader if so can you post the version.

In bootloader, I have this:
Code:
VISION PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.0005
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
Oct 11 2010,20:10:38
Is it what you asked?
Try to flash an ruu for your specic rom that came with phone. If that doesnt flash then your emmc is most likely fried

Before you do that try to use the superwipe+ext4 for the g2. Try to see if that wipes without giving you issues

superwipe gave me some errors (did not note, error 1, I think?), and update from PC10IMG.zip too, and it is stuck on updating the radio:
Code:

It's been working for several minutes, I don't know if it is still working... anyway, the SYSTEM Fail-PU is a bad news, isn't it? what can I do?
Just to be sure you did this through the bootloader right?
Anyways fail pu means failed partition update and has been seen on those phones that contain the bad emmc chip that is more at risk of malfunctioning. At this point you would have to try to contact htc and see if they'll do anything.
It'll be great if someone else chimes into this conversation because I'm out of ideas. I will keep searching and get back to you.
In the meantime here is the contact info for htc france
http://www.htc.com/fr/contact/
Espérons qu'ils résoudre le problème. Bonne chance.

Yes, I did it through the bootloader
Since it was still stuck on updating radio, I removed the battery and tried again, without success (same errors, and even an error on recovery update).
But I have found the following thread GUIDE: Downgrading for those with the PC10IMG.zip not found issue, and tried this method... it seems to have worked:

I got back to the hboot, and tried update again, and at this point, it seems to work too, everything was ok (or bypassed for the second TP), I hitted power button to reboot, HTC logo came, then the annoying HTC sound with the "quietly brilliant" logo and... android starts ! \o/
I think I'm not done yet, but it is on a good way!
I have now followed this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
and then re-installed mimicry 1.5 from the touch recovery, the bootanim is running for several minutes, I prefer to wait!
I think I'm gonna be mad with that phone!
it was still not booting after the bootanim, so i decided to install another rom... i started by wiping all data, and it is stuck on formatting /cache...
'adb reboot recovery' is my new best friend!
Well, I have had other strange errors, had to install mimicry a second time, but now, it SEEMS (again, I don't want to be too optimistic !) to be running fine... I have installed Titanium backup, and restored some essential apps... I will check if it is stable before to start using it again as my main phone... for now, the SIM card is in another one!
Just for fun see if you had one of the "bad" batches of chips, check here and post back http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13228425

Are you using 4ext recovery?

I did check that for fun, a few weeks ago, and as far as I remember, I had the "good" one... I will check again later, right now, my colleague is fed up with the tiny vibration my phone makes when it starts... I wouldn't like to receive his mouse or his keyboard in the face!
Code:
C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb shell
~ # cat /proc/kmsg | grep 'mmc0:0001'
cat /proc/kmsg | grep 'mmc0:0001'
<6>[ 6.707244] mmcblk0: mmc0:0001 SEM04G 2.17 GiB
Anyway, I'm not done yet with that f***... fabulous phone!
Yesterday, everything seemed fine during all the afternoon... I tried several applications, and it was running smoothly... but in the evening, it started to be slower and slower, and finally it did start to freeze unexpectedly, until the moment it wouldn't boot anymore...
I'm wondering if it is not happening only or mostly when the battery level is low, how could we explain it?
This morning, I tried to install the latest stable CM7.2 release, but it crashed... Like would say Jack White, I just don't know what to dooo with my phone...
Thank you in advance, any help is really appreciated...
logcat attached
Here's a logcat:
I started the phone (after a previous crash, of course), plugged it into my computer, waited for it to crash again, and there it is!
(see attached logcat.txt)
I can see all these services die at the end, but what and where is the explanation of these regrettable deathes?
Anybody?
I have tried again to format all my partitions, reinstall various roms from scratch, but sometimes, the install fails, sometimes it doesn't boot, and when it does, it crashes after a little while... if I have any hardware damage (which seems the most credible), how can I know what exactly? My internal microphone is dead for several months already (I have to use the hand free set), could it be related? Something like an electrical damage when the microphone is sollicitated?

Unable to unlock Moto 360 (stays locked)

Hi all,
I have got my hands on a Moto 360 which seems to not be able to complete its boot. So I figured I would unlock it and flash it to something that is known to work from these forums. I have made a USB cable and was able to put the watch to bootloader. However after executing fastboot oem unlock I see the following output on the console:
Code:
➜ ~ fastboot oem unlock
...
(bootloader) WARNING: This will erase all private information on device
(bootloader) Press power button within 5 seconds to confirm
OKAY [ 0.005s]
finished. total time: 0.005s
It finishes right away, even without me pressing the power button. And the bootloader remains locked even if I press the power button afterwards. Is this a known ununlockable Moto 360 issue?
Here is the output of the getvar all command if it helps:
Code:
➜ ~ fastboot getvar all

If you rooted your Pixel/Pixel XL (The reason people unlock the bootloader.). Why would you lock the bootloader? Locking the bootloader without returning the phone to Stock can result in a bricked phone. Consider yourself, extremely, lucky if you didn't brick it. Go to this thread Do #3 to Unlock bootloader: [Guide] Pixel XL Android 9.0 (Pie) Unlock/Root/Install Images/Kernels/Recovery + by Homeboy76 Then do #4 'keep data', and #8 to root or
side load the OTA if you do not want to unlock the bootloader or root.
The point is this locked bootloader seem to have no or missing library to support command
Anytime i flash file .img got notice
<bootloader> Command is not supported.
<bootloader> Please unlock device to enable this command.
FAILED <remote:''>
and im stuck in boot_slot a.
fastboot reboot bootloader --slot b > still reboot in boot_slot a

Have you tried flashing the factory images? You probably have to go into dev settings and re-enable the unlock bootloader option.
If you re-locked your bootloader with a modified system, cannot boot the device, and cannot unlock your bootloader in fastboot, then you have made a major mistake and it's unlikely that you can fix it.
I've now said this in quite a few posts. DON'T relock your bootloader. Ever. Ever ever.

Phone bricked after reboot (Fastboot stuck in 'Device-State: error') [Abandoned]

Edit 4:
I've pretty much given up on this. I'm too busy to tinker with it at the moment. I switched to the Pixel 5 just after this happened, and I had a backup from December (about 5 months worth of data lost). Oh well
---
Yesterday, my phone was acting kinda sluggish, so I rebooted it... And it never came back up.
I force booted into fastboot and was greeted with this [screenshot below]
Now, booting to Recovery and Rescue from the bootloader just goes to black screen (Start goes back to the bootloader), and booting normally also just goes to black screen.
Trying to do most things via fastboot cli just results in the error message FAILED (remote: 'error getting device locked state Protocol Error')
I've tried:
setting the active slot
flashing the bootloader
erasing system_a and boot_a
flashing boot.img
flashing stock boot.img
fastboot booting into boot.img or twrp.img
fastboot update stock.zip (it fails at setting the slot)
letting the battery die over night
using a different charger
using a script to reboot repeatedly
removing the sim and booting
disconnecting the battery
putting it in the freezer (yes)
a new battery
I'm also going to try taking it apart and disconnecting the battery
This is the output of `fastboot getvar all`

I know I've installed Youtube Vanced, Adaway, and Universal SafetyNet Fix
I did NOT have Xposed or others installed, and I don't remember if the device fingerprint was still being spoofed (I don't think it was)
If anyone happened to have the EDL / QPST files, that would be handy as well
*sigh* I have 0 idea how this happened. Could even be an eMMC hardware failure, which would not be nice

I just ordered new battery. The old one seems flaky and acting like it's not holding a charge (and a new one is inexpensive). I'm also going to try to leave the battery disconnected overnight (I'm hoping there's some volatile storage or capacitor that'll be discharged and refreshed in the morning)
Edit 3:
The new battery did not help. ugh.
At this point QPST would make matters worse by formatting userdata. Your only hope for recovering the data might be to reboot the phone to edl with fastboot using fastboot reboot emergency and then flashing the exact same system and boot image that you were using. You might need to convert the system.new.dat.br file to system.img. Flash it with the adb edl command and then try to reboot.
But before you do that try changing your slot to B then reboot and try switching to A and reboot again

I did. No fastboot commands will work because they check for "locked" state beforehand, which cannot be determined (that's also why an fastboot update update.zip won't work either).
My best hope is a new battery might help.
If not, I may have to do a little hacking, myself

I tried fastboot oem reboot-edl and variants, but I'll try that when I get home (at work currently)
Although, it seems like google's bootloader won't allow you to boot into EDL
I tried fastboot reboot emergency, which didn't work ("no" reboot target 'emergency'')
But fastboot oem reboot-edl gave back error getting device locked state Protocol Error. So that may be a valid command, but due to the reason for needing it, I can't use it.
However, I've got the back panel off the phone. If i can find the EDL short points, I might still be able to go that route
Welp
In my disassembly of the phone, I just broke the side buttons (power + vol) ribbon connector.
So, unless a new battery works (or i can find the EDL test points), I might be SOL
(I could probably buy a busted 3XL off ebay and swap the mobo's. But it's not looking good)
I found the EDL test points! But nobody's gonna like where they are.
They're on the underside of the motherboard, the left 2 of a cluster of 3 just under one of the mounting holes.
Unplug the battery, plug it back in, use something to bridge the two contacts, and plug in the usb power
@lightfire228 Hello. Are you able to fix your phone?

I haven't tried anything since finding the EDL test points.
I'm still waiting on a replacement battery. If that works, then I'm just going to transfer the data to my new phone.
If not, I'll look into prodding the EDL. But, since I've not had a lot of time to research that particular route, nor have I done any sort of reverse-engineering like that, I don't how feasible that will be
This looks useful for EDL
My pixel 3 reboot and deid The charger from pixelbook go helped me. He does not see other charges

Question I think I Bricked my Pixel 6 Pro please help!

So I was side loading an update and unplugged the phone because I assumed it was finished flashing. It said 47% complete, but I thought it just meant it was finished.
Anyway, my phone is stuck with a black screen now. It detects it in fastboot but I'm not able to enter fastbootd for some reason. When I try flashing an image, it gets stuck at "Rebooting into fastboot" it will then timeout stating that "fastboot: error: failed to boot into userspace fastboot; one or more components might be unbootable"
My phone can charge. However, everything is just black, I have to plug my phone into the computer, press volume - + power and hope to God I hear that USB connected sound.
Fastboot getvar is-userspace returns NO.
My pixel 6 Pro is now being detected as a SLIDER, (probably cause of the name of the bootloader), because it's not being detected as a Pixel 6 Pro, I cannot use the android flash tool provided by Google.
Please help!
Surely Android flash tool would fix it if fastboot is recognising it
Guide: Unbrick Pixel 6 Oriele or Pixel 6 Pro "Raven"
Pixel 6 Pro runs on a Google Tensor CPU which is in fact an Exynos CPU This means that there is Exynos boot recovery in the CPU You can repair the bootloader using the Samsung Exynos Tool Nothing could be flashed from the mode, however it...

Hello, thank you for the reply.
Android flash tool recognizes it as SLIDER and not as a Pixel 6 Pro. That's why I can't use it. I'm also unsure if this is truely fastboot, I can use powershell to recognize it as fastboot, but when using "fastboot reboot fastboot" it gets stuck on rebooting into fastboot.

Thank you for this, there isn't really any clear method into using this software, I also do not have windows 7 anywhere on me. Anyway, my computer detects it as an Android Bootloader Interface in windows and not as an exynos7420 device. I don't know how to proceed, I don't want to uninstall the driver in fear of losing the recognition of the device while I still have it.
UPDATE: Tried to follow instructions, but can't even install the driver because I'm not on Windows 7, so unfortunately this won't work for me as of yet.

Nobody's been able to fix a p6 with that method.
It's interesting that you were just flashing an ota update via adb. The phone should have just flipped over to the other boot slot and booted. that's why flashing ota adb updates are the safest.
Can you try just holding volume down in power with a phone unplugged? Keep trying that for a while? If you can get to recovery mode or rescue mode, you should be able to use flash.android in fastboot.
Any battery icon when plugging in the charger?

So I didn't do enough research and didn't flash A13 on both slots, I think that's the reason for the "brick" I tried to flash both in pixel flasher after this happened, but nothing has worked so far. What's puzzling me is the fact that it's being recognized as SLIDER and not my pixel 6 pro anymore, even in pixel flasher and the android flash tool from google.
Pressing volume down and power brings me into bootloader mode but nothing comes up on the screen, I need to plug it into a computer to get any results. It also still shows as Slider instead of Pixel 6 Pro so... That's that.
There is unfortunately no battery icon when plugging in the charger. :'(

If you can't see Fastboot Mode on your screen, nothing will work.
Just contact Google and get yourself a replacement. Just takes 2 days.
Also, here's what I got from Pixel Flasher

Is your bootloader unlocked?
If so you can extract and flash the bootloader only from the the latest full firmware images.
If successful, fastbootd should be working again and go ahead and flash the full firmware.

How do you ensure you flash both slots? I downloaded the tool from Google with the .bat file in it.

I used Pixel Flasher, both bootloaders are identical, therefore I assume it is. What tool did you download from google???

Google's factory images can be flashed either by going to flash.android.com or by using CLI (command line interface, for example with the .bat file you were referring to). The bat file has the flash instructions but won't flash both slots. You will either need to flash the active slot, then switch slots, and flash the other, or use something like PixelFlasher (found in this Pixel 6 Pro xda group).
And tread carefully/pay attention the anti-rollback WILL hard-brick ur phone if triggered...no joke.
Any update on this @NinjaPumpkin?
oh frick yeah I need to flash my other slot too
