My Xiaomi Mi A1 is about to be replaced and my Mrs loves her note 8t (4\64 variant)
I'm very tempted to buy myself this same handset as it's nicely feature packed and great value.
I'm an it engineer and I'm extremely comfortable flashing new ROM s to devices (I've flashed new a new ROM to every Android device I've ever owned, including Samsung galaxy, TV boxes, Huawei, redmi and my A1) however my Mrs hasn't let me experiment with her phone
I have a few questions though before I bite the bullet.
I've seen videos and threads online about dual booting Android with Linux, namely Ubuntu touch. (Q) is there anything similar for this device?
I've flashed postmarketos to an old (really old) Samsung Tab 4 but it's nowhere near being a usable device due to lack of support.
Ok, so it turns out I've only really got one question.
Can this device run a usable form of Linux with display, data and calls working?

Hello,
Next Monday I'll receive my new mi mix 2 (I'm very happy and impatient), but I don't know if I will opt to open its bootloader to root and install roms, etc...
I had a xperia arc s before and played with lots of custom roms before, then changed to iphone 4s (good one but I definitely don't like apple stuff - too much protected and closed, with those headaches if you want to keep your phone jailbreaked, because of the signing restriction for the firmwares), and now I'm back to android with this model.
I know I'll loose the guarantee if I ask xaomi permission to unlock it, so the questions are:
- Such a powered device really needs to be rooted to really enjoy it ? I rooted arc s for obvious reasons about lack of internal storage and support for newer android versions, but... this mi mix 2 beast ?! really needs it ?
- Come on, give us some real and concrete examples where xxx custom rom for xiaomi mi mix 2 gives all people a real significant advantage, not just for playing around. I know this is full of fun that stuff about re-re-re-flashing and test stuff, but... speaking in particular about concrete final features, can you give me some justified examples ?
- I know I'm being too severe, especially having played before lots of hours with the arc s, but maybe I'm changing my way, because I'm searching for real advantages.
- Magisk or permanent Root ? is magisk supported for mi mix 2 ? if I use banking apps, I suppose that magisk is better. Right ?
- If those advantages were real, would you wait a few months or even years 'till guarantee ends (keep in mind I have years ofexperience playing with arc s's android roms), or start having fun ? I don't mind if I temporary brick the phone, because I'd find my way to reflash it as always.
Thanks in advance !
> easily switch to global rom
> switch to debloated miui stock rom (xiaomi.eu or epic for example)
> test some aosp on it (lineage, RR) which runs well
> magisk is supported (tested successfully on lineage and epic rom, both pokemon go works)
if you bouth a mix 2 with global rom, it may be less useful.
I just readed a few minutes ago an article about chinese budget phones. They came to speak about Xiaomi and Oneplus. Only 1% of buyer of both trademark send their phone back for warranty. This of course cares about device reliability.
The real question is : if you're not from china and didn't buy it from Xiaomi Spain (EU)… will you really use warranty for something that will probably won't be covered ? Better insure it by your insurance company.
I bought mine when Lineage was out because my condition is that my phone has to be as close as AOSP as possible and Xiaomi is known for quality. Playing with roms is up to you depending if you can stand with MIUI or not.
Finally, I think your post is in the wrong section. This is more general questions than Rom development.

I've had an MI5 for a couple years and the screen is cracked and close to dying. I was thinking of buying an MI5S as a replacement but feel like I could get a better phone as it's TOO similar to my trusty MI5 even.
My specific, additional criteria includes it being similarly sized (height/thickness) to the MI5/MI5S (to fit my mobile phone holder). After searching GSMArena, it returned around 8 phones. Most of them were cheap phones that were also released in 2016. The one exception was the original Google Pixel. The spec seems similar to the MI5/MI5S but the fingerprint scanner on the back is a deal breaker. So with that, I'd be prepared to open up the choice of phones a bit more. It must be able to run LineageOS and still be getting updates (future releases are never guaranteed, I understand). Any recommended phones (or just get the MI5S)?
I would go for the newer Mi6, because it has an optical image stabilizer like the Mi5, which the Mi5s sadly lacks.
The Mi6 also has a way faster CPU than the Mi5s. Don't forget, the Mi5s is now nearly 2 years old.
Indeed, price difference is minimal, so go with better options like the Mi6. Mi Note 3 and Mi Mix 2 are also friendly priced recently.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. I didn't consider the Mi6 and a few other Xiaomi phones becasuse I was using an old GSMarena saved search where I specified band 28 had to be in the phone, but I don't actually need that band now.
Aaargh, the Mi6 (and upcoming 6X), Mi Note 3 and Mi Mix 2 all don’t have headphone jacks (the headphone adapters aren’t going to cut it)! Curse you Apple. We knew it was coming, I guess. They’re all a similar size to my old phone at least and fit the phone holder as well.
Mi Mix 2 looks like it will get updated for some time but that's starting to get heavy (185 g/6.53 oz) too:
https://www.lineageosrom.com/2018/01/xiaomi-devises-getting-android-p.html
The Nokia 8 actually looks very good value with same CPU as the Mi Mix 2 (and similar weight) but with the headphone jack, but the Lineage devs are waiting on the bootloader to be unlockable for that.
I think I’ll have to wait. At least I have a better idea of what I’m looking for. Would be nice if the stats.lineageos.org site showed the newer phones’ popularity/trend in another table.
Mm, you have a point there. The Mi Note 2 or the original Mi Mix maybe? The upcoming Redmi Note 5 (with the SD636) is also promising to be a good deal. Otherwise some Nubia (Z17 lite for instance) and maybe even LeTV phones with a custom ROM might be worth a look (although I'm not sure about the build quality from LeTV). Just check the XDA thread of the device beforehand and always stick to Qualcomm processors as Mediatek gives crap support to both producers and ROM developers.

Thanks for those. Mi Note 2 and orignial Mi Mix are a bit old (hey, one of the earlier posts has made me only look at 2017 or later phones). The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro phone is a bit heavy at around 180gm (my 64gb Mi5 is 129gb).
The LeTv/LeEco phnoe have two, more-recent releases that look reasonable but from those the LeEco Le Pro3 Elite has the same chipset as my Mi5 and the LeEco Le Pro 3 AI Edition has a Mediatek chipset (taking your advice on ruling out phones with those).
The Zubia Z17 lite looks a decent option (168gms is getting up there is weight) but just saw its finger print scanner is rear-mounted too.
Will keep looking!
On the 24. April Xiaomi will present the new Mi 6X. Details so far unknown, but will probably be the successor of the Mi 6.

No separate 3.5mm/headphone jack. Looks nice though. I refuse to get wireless earphones or use any dongle. I bought some nice wired earphones not too long ago.
Sounds like the Mi7 might be out sometime this year too (but, again, probably won't have a 3.5mm/headphone jack).
Hi,
I am looking for a phone, and I would like some advice to help me choose the right one.
I only use my phone to send/receive SMS/calls/emails. I also play (old) games while commuting. No Facebook, no social media, close to no browsing (occasionally, maybe once a month mainly to open links in emails)... which makes me think there is no need for a powerful phone.
I still don't want to buy a supermarket-and-cheap phone as I want something where I can install LineageOS/Cyanogenmod and upgrade "regularly" (every 2-3 years) to a recent version of Android. [I plan to keep my phone 5-10 years]
I also don't want a huge phone as they do nowadays (max 140mm length). I tried the LG G3 and the Samsung GS5 but they are too big for me.
I used to have a Samsung Galaxy S2 which was perfect for me, but it died (maybe softbricked) while upgrading cyanogenmod.
My options : repair the SG2 but it may be a waste of money! or buy a new phone.
So my question is : do you know any recent phone that is not too big, quite cheap, and where I can install LineageOS?
Go to kimovil.com and search (up to 140mm)
Im using Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite.
It's best to just go for a One plus 6. Whatever you do, phrase do not go for another product apart from ONE PLUS is a no-win for me [emoji107] ONE PLUS COMMUNITY is the best. Join the trend and have a great smartphone Experience
Sent from my Nokia 7 plus using Tapatalk
I second the OnePlus devices, development, community...
Xiaomi mi A2. perfect phone for the money.
note 6 pro is better. mi 8 lite has better cpu but in real world usage, there is no difference at all. mi 8 lite don't have SD card expansion, small battery, no fm radio and no 3.5mm jack. also no ifr port. so make your choice
I would recommend the Xiaomi Mi9T
Hello guys
Sorry for the long question.
I am very confused these days, i sold Redmi Note 7 some days ago but now i don't understand that what device is perfect for me in my low budget. I have some devices in my mind:
1. Pocophone F1
2. Realme 3 Pro
3. OnePlus 5T
What i need:
I really like to install different roms on my deivce, occasionally gaming and most of the time watching movies etc.
Why i am not able to decide ?
1. Pocophone F1
Big notch taking over 70% of status bar. Heard / saw different threads claiming that the devices has touch screen / hardware issues.
2. Realme 3 Pro
Realme 5 Pro also available around the world but not in Pakistan. In Pakistan only option so far is Realme 3 Pro. Overall phone seems to be a good deal. But there is no Android development.
3. OnePlus 5T
This device is my most favorite device. Do you guys recommend me to buy 5T in 2019? and i also want to now, that is there any common hardware related issues to check for before buying?
Looking for response from you guys.
Plenty of ROM support and easy methodology to tamper, if you aren't a fan of OOS which is quite good anyway. Updates are still being released quite frequently through the beta.
Bought mine on release, coming up on 2 years ago now. Only complaints I have hardware wise:
-charging port can be finicky, but I need to clean it.
-camera is very average (but GCam mod with root + camera library dot fix performs very well)
I don't see myself getting a different phone for at LEAST another year and a bit. Take of that what you will.
I bought oneplus 5t 2 weeks a ago and i would say buy the damn phone you won't regret it, previously i was using samsung a50 but was not satisfied with the performance, oneplus 5t is blazing fast, go for it
Good phone but two things that suck
Vibration motor is horrible. It's so weak that I can't even hear it most of the time
Camera quality out of the box is just average
This two things didn't seem to be important to me in the past but you do notice the difference after using the phone for 2 years
In my opinion 5T is still beast but official beta support had dropped
Not that much custom ROMs available (many maintainers and developers switched to op6 or higher models)
Better try to buy op6or6T
Although open beta has been stripped for the 5t I'm still more than happy with my 5t. I even prefer OOS over the custom ROMs because it's really fast, stable and the gesture control kicks ass and is way better than that Google thing. Plus have in mind that OP already confirmed Android q. It may take a while but for now OP is still going strong with security patches. As long the battery is fine so am I.
Dear all,
I have removed some off topic posts from this thread. Please post with manners and contribute to the discussion. Thanks.

The Pocophone has larger battery and an IR scanner which is amazing for face recognition. But the screen is not good as 5T's.
Oxygen OS is probably the best out there. It is light and so fast and allows so many customizations. I bet you won't be bothered with custom ROMs!
Snapdragons 835 and 845 don't differ much either.
I'd go for the 5T if I found both at similar price.
Hello everyone,
I wanna hear what your thoughts about the Note 8 Pro vs Note 8.
Do you have any regrets when it comes to buying the Pro? I see that on paper it is much better than the Note 8 however, there doesn't seem to be a lot of custom roms/kernels for it and there is also a bricking issue with the MTK processor.. What are your thoughts and opinions on this? Would you exchange your Note 8 Pro for a Normal variant if you could? Do you have any regrets? Are new custom roms coming in the future? What do you think?
Thank you for your responses.

the processor in Rn8 is alright not as fast compared to MTK in RN8p (i do alot of multi tasking etc)
I reluctantly bought the RN8p because the only variant in RN8 available was 4/128 - needed that extra ram
i neither game nor am much into photography so can't comment there.
Have it rooted and finally setup nearly to my liking, but MTK does suffer from availability of roms and the bricking issues - waiting for RN9p, will move to it if the reviews turn out +ve
Note 8 < Note 8 Pro
Because better processor. Better performance for the price. Also custom roms aren't as rare as some people would have you believe. We have 5 ROMs in testing phase at the moment. And it's just a matter of just one of them having a breakthrough in terms of fixing some known issues. Then we can possibly run any custom rom we want in this phone.
if you are planning to use as a normal user and not planning to mod and install ROMs then RN8P is the way to go if you plan to do mod and flash rom and stuff then other phones might have better dev support.
