Is there a way to sync ONLY my google calendar without syncing other services?
Go to Settings / User & Accounts / Google and select only the options Sync Calendar and Sync Tasks in Calendar.

When I go there I have the only option of syncing everything including drive which I don't want. I just want to sync calendar ONLY. Btw theres no 'sync tasks' options, just sync calendar, wifi, fit, contacts, drive, people and games cloud.
I also tried installing 2 sync widgets from the playstore to sync my calendar upon pressing their buttons but it doesn't work. Do you know where in the settings on the phone I need to modify to get the widgets to work? The phone isn't letting the widgets work which is strange.
This is how it looks on my phone. However I have installed the google apps so maybe that's why it looks different.

Hey dude. your response lead me to the answer. What happened to me was I disabled the google app which turned off syncing. Now I've re-enabled the google app and its working fine now.
The only issue now is how to reduce the amount of times it syncs since its syncing all the time. If you know of a good app that limits syncing times please let me know. Thanks.

I want to try using the Mail app instead of the GMail one, but is it actually possible to disable the GMail app without losing all the other functionality you get from logging into your Google account? - there seems to be a unified log in used by GMaps as well, for example. And when I try to remove the account in settings, it says I have to do a factory reset, this seems bonkers to me.
I couldn't manage to get my Google Mail account to sign into the Mail app...

Turn off sync for Gmail under Settings->Accounts & sync.
You might also want to switch of notifications in the Gmail app too.
Regards,
Dave
Will the phone sync google mail contacts via imap on the mail app or do I need to stick to the gmail app for that?

I think you must have a different version from mine. I have
Settings - Accounts& Sync
Background Data (tickbox)
AutoSync (tickbox)
Manage Accounts
Google
Stocks
Weather
If I tick Google I get a new screen:
Sync calendar
Sync contacts
Sync Google Mail
Sync Picassa Web Albums
(These all just trigger a sync)
At the bottom there are 2 buttons, Sync Now and Remove Account.
If I try remove account a box pops up warning that it will delete all the data, I say OK, then another box that says it can't do it, I have to factory reset because it is required by some applications.
I have been using the Google Mail app since I've had my phone, but today came across a problem - I could not copy & paste a tracking # from an email. I then quickly set up my gmail in the Mail app, & was able to perform this action very easily.
So my question is: has anyone used both apps extensively, & could they give me a quick "pro's & cons"?

Here you go someone has already done that:

The only thing that really annoys me is the fact that your Mail widget does not update the list of emails unless you open the Mail application.
Even if you already updated the email list in your GMail appl.
For example: I receive an email. I get a notification in the notification bar. I open it and it takes me to the Gmail appl (by default). I check my emails, read them, exit the application.
However, my HTCMail Widget (sitting on the desktop) does not show any updates. I have to open the HTCMail manually, sync (again!) and only then can I see the updated list.
Aaaargh!
I've been tempted to move to using the mail application over the gmail one as well.
I think ill setup the mail application with my other gmail account then compare the 2
I much prefer the gmail app. I think its quicker and easier to reply, and it syncs straight away unlike the mail app.
Only downside is the lack of widget, but with the number of apps I have on my homescreens, this isn't an issue.
I always feel it's worth mentioning k9mail at this point, if only because it supports IMAP IDLE.
I have searched and read, and most want to sync from gmail to phone..I want the opposite...I have my calendar setup on the SIII with the default calendar app. Im trying to sync this calendar to a new blank gmail calendar. Pretty much just birthdays and other repeat events. the gmail account is checked in the calendar settings. Sync is "ON" for gmail, hit sync now and it will go through with no errors, check google calendar and nothing is there, still blank online.
issue...
I have the same issue... exactly.
Can it really be possible you cant do this?? I dont get why something this simple is not an option, hell they force every other google thing on ya, but NOOO cant sync to google calendar...wonder if this is a google thing or Samsung thing that has the breakdown...and you can sync from google to samsung, just not the other way...
in your settings (when inside your calendar app) why can't you pick your gmail calendar as your default calendar??
Not sure what your asking, gmail is checked in the settings, but there is no gmail calendar app installed there is only s planner stock on the S3...Ive pretty much just given up as nobody has the answer so Im guessing it just cant be done, I dont see any other places to check or change. Gmail calendar can update s planner , but it will not sync the other way.

oh, sorry. i have a calendar app and in those setting you can specify which calendar you wish to sync with.
If you click the calendars button at the top you will see a list of calendars. The first one is probably My Calendar, then My Tasks, then a list of gmail calendars you have. Only the gmail calendars sync with gmail. The sync is bi-directional.
Thanks

Thanks mate - you helped me, big time.
I have a rooted Galaxy Nexus running the Evolution rom and having trouble syncing my Google Calendar. When i make an event in either my phone or my computer browser, the event will not carry over to the other device. I added my exchange calendar and that syncs both ways with no problems.
When i go to settings > accounts > google > my google account, Calendar is not in the list to sync, I see Browser, Contacts, Currents, Drive, Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Play Music (in that order).
I have gone thru the calendar settings to look at calendars to display and calendars to sync and it shows up in there but its not actually syncing. I even tried to reflash gapps to no avail.
Any ideas?

Check calendar-menu-calendars to sync and make sure it's checked.

Where are you seeing this? there are no calendars available? When I goto settings->accounts->google, there is no option for calendars. When I goto calendar->settings and select the google user id (i have multiple calendars) it reports no calendars available. Now the first account listed does state This account is being synced so your calendars may not be up to date, but its been saying that for a couple days now.

Call me paranoid, but I don't like the idea of keeping my appointments in the cloud.
The problem is, the stock HTC calendar reduces available options when I'm switching from a Google account to either the phone (i.e. HTC Sync) or local account.
Does anyone have any experience with the Google calendar app and local accounts? Is it possible to use it without syncing with Google? Is there any other decent calendar app that would work with a completely local account, with an occasional backup to either SD card or PC?
You can turn off synchronization for Google Calendar under settings.

Somehow on my phone this setting has no effect and Google keeps syncing the calendar.
And then I'm using several gmail accounts, so the events get scattered between different "accounts". I have no idea why a simple list of appointments has to be associated with any kind account.
I don't think you are doing it right when you turned off the calendar sync. Anyway, there is an app called Offline Calendar. Perhaps you could give it a try.
I know this app. It creates a local (offline) calendar, but does not do anything else, you have to use this local calendar as an "account" in some other calendar app, like the stock HTC calendar.
As to turning off sync, I don't think you can do it "wrong". You just go into Google account settings, tap on an account (if you have more than one, like I do) and then there are sync settings, you can choose whether to sync gmail, contacts, calendar, apps, etc. I uncheck all of the boxes except for gmail, since this is the only thing I need to be synced - otherwise I will not be able to read email and that's the whole point of having a Google account. In any case, the calendar sync setting is off and still the HTC calendar app syncs every time I add an event to a calendar associated with a Google account.
Two ideas to try:
1. Use Google calendar with sync turned off. See if it still syncs new event.
2. Stay with HTC calendar and use the offline new account created by that app. Add new event to the offline account.
Try a calendar on the play store that has no sync function........ Or, don't worry. Everyone syncs... If there were security issues, it would be reported all over.
I doubt Google will show up at an event you have scheduled and mug you. ?
Just got my Fire Phone a couple of days ago and I knew exactly what I was getting into when I bought it. First thing I did was install Play Store along with all the apks are are important from Google.
But as the title suggests, I am just curious on if there is a way to sync Google Contacts quickly. My Contacts apps syncs fine with my Gmail, but it takes every bit of hour for them to sync. Whereas as when you add a contact in Gmail on the computer they sync immediately with an Android Phone. We have tried the different syncs options on the Fire Phone but to no avail. Just more curious than anything. If there isnt a way, it really doesnt bother me to much instead of being more a nuisance than anything.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had to set up the Fire Email app with my Gmail address to get the contacts & calendar to sync. I actually like the email app more than I thought I would but can't seem to find two critical things:
-Notify once for emails (not every email)
-Different notification sounds for different accounts
Am I missing a setting somewhere?

It was pretty automatic for me. I logged in using my gmail account. I will try to help you though but you prolly already have all the correct settings. When you open your email app from the OS (not some installed app from the store), left swipe to get to your settings. In my email app, the only email I have as an account is Gmail. Go to settings in the menu. Bottom option. On next screen click Contacts Settings. From there you have an option to Synchronize contacts. Make sure that is set to on. Try that and let us know what happens. This is where is may take to up to an hour for it to sync. My original question here was if there is a faster option to get the contacts to sync because many times I need the contact sync immediately.
It prolly just built into the OS to sync at a certain time frame.

Gotcha!! I basically disabled the built in email app and installed googlecontactssyncadapter.apk in an effort to sync contacts. Unsuccessful, I moved to using CM11 and loving it!! Thanks for the detailed explanations!
I disabled most of the amazon apps as well, and noticed that my contacts stopped syncing. Looked into it a little more and saw that it was tied to the email app. The email app is okay, but it doesn't have any of my gmail labels so that was out, and it was using too much juice as was so I had to find an alternative. This app will connect to google, or a number of other contact sync services, and you can set the sync rate on it.
