Hello.
I bought a refurbished a3y17lte and expect it will run /e/ in GSI flavor (no official nor unofficial build yet).
- OEM unlock enabled > FRP LOCK: OFF in download mode,
- manual updated to latest 'Orange Télécom' version from device itself,
- then I flashed latest stock ROM with Heimdall (Debian Buster),
-
Code:
a3y17lte:/ $ getprop ro.treble.enabled
false
so I posted > there <.
I've got any more 'n00b' questions...
While unzipping stock image, Xarchiver just needs
Code:
~# apt install lz4
Then, in CSC folder I've got an A3Y17LTE_EUR_OPEN.pit file. May I flash it too ? Stock partitioning shows:
Code:

======I tried to flash TWRP and install LOS 16.0; 3.3.1 worked with difficulty (needs to choose 'Don't install' twrp as sytem app), 3.3.0 works, 3.4.0 return 'ERROR 7', so I went back to stock (heimdall flash). May I prefer OrangeFox recovery ?
Expecting this Exynos 7870 will run GSI, may I install 'Repartition' script or try H-Vendor (both by @Astrako ) ? I'm not sure to understand well how to use. What are the proper steps to avoid brick ?
Thanks a lot.
P.S.: I'm reading this (old) thread...
P.S.2: and this other one. I will become fan of @Astrako
Hello.
Well, well, well, I don't want 'another brick'... so fast replies on telegram Pruh 7870 don't match with my poor knowledge. I'm coming from Moto, easy to use with twrp and adb/fastboot...
My pit contains CARRIER instead of VENDOR (certainly why Shelter points a 'custom ROM'), so I probably need to flash europe_open.pit from stock ROM first. Then, I'm not sure what exactly do:
- flash custom recovery (twrp, orangefox, skyhawk?) first,
- universal-repartitioner_7870 (or older?),
- treble,
- a a_only gsi (e-pie-gsi),
- gsi_patch.
I will wait for advice and read again and again @starbright_ (#58) to understand how to proceed...
Note I want to try e-pie first (full build) then Q (light custom build).
Thanks.
P.S.: found last twrp custom 3.4.0-0-a3y17lte, thanks.

What is a e-pie?
Custom Recovery (I thing which one is not important) is first. But isn't order explained in my post? All custom ROMs have some deficits. I try to modify a stock now, but I ma just facing some problems with location... (look for the deploat thread if you like). So frustrating....
Thanks.
Sorry, e-pie is /e/ OS based on LOS-Pie. No build for a3y17lte except a GSI one.
Your post (linked above) is fine, but I'm not sure about some details, as 'install just system' (about flashing GSI ROM)...
May I follow straight or adapt with new tools (H-Vendor, universal_repartitioner)? I don't already see what's happen at each step.

Repartition is needed in both cases. Treble is for GSI Pie (A only) and H-ROM for A/B Q. Is this answering you question?
Hello.
Yes, thanks > two different combo so I need to choose first Pie or Q flavor. And clean flash from Pie to Q....
I will try, probably tomorrow. Thanks again.
Hello.
First of all, after 'Custom rom' message from Shelter, it seems I need to flash eur_open.pit (entries 24 to 27 are slightly different) to complete 'stock' flash. I have the right a3y17lte_eur_open.pit from Samsung stock rom, but didn't know how to flash safely the pit. I already extracted and saved on PC the 'factory' (Orange Telecom) pit with Heimdall...
I found on web, to flash the pit:
Code:
heimdall flash --repartition -- --pit my-samsung-file.pit
- Can I flash lonely, boot in download mode (buttons) then reboot system?
- May I add a new flash of all files extracted from Samsung's stock ROM (already flashed)?.
Thanks in advance.
.
P.S.: don't know where adv-env.img has to be flashed...
Hi.
Code:
heimdall flash --repartition --PIT A3Y17LTE_EUR_OPEN.pit --no-reboot
Code:
Uploading PIT
ERROR: Failed to receive PIT file part response!
ERROR: PIT upload failed!
Hello.
Back to 'seller' ROM (fr. Orange telecom) but still 'PIT upload failed' while flashing stock standard ROM and nor more buttons-mode recovery acces, with 'No command' response.
TWRP (unofficial from Pruh 7870) was running buggy, too...
'Orange' has a A3Y17LTE_EUR_OPEN_HIDDEN200M.pit (and ROM has a lot of bloatwares).
PS: same while launching command as root, with 'Can't open ---.pit file'
Édith used a w$ PC (with Odin 3.14.4) and then device now runs stock 'standard' ROM with repartition OK I will begin to flash treble...
Hello.
Well, trying 'pie' method, I've always have an issue during process: one or other partition falls 'unmountable', despite a reboot in Recovery after each successful flash.
- I'd first flash Disable_DM-verity_ForceEncrypt_03.04.2020.zip with twrp-3.3.1-0 (didn't work with twrp-3.4.0-0-astrako),
- when 'repartitioner' works (with /vendor seen 'mountable' in Advanced > Mount), treble's installation ends with " unable to mount '/vendor' ",
- installing only System (choose rom.img > 3 checkboxes Boot / Recovery / System) ends in a bootloop,
- flashing gsi-patch doesn't solve and ends in bootloop too...
Strange thing, despite a full wipe and format data, date/time remain after flashing stock ROM (with *.pit) and twrp-3.3.1-0 sometimes comes back by itself, replacing 3.4.0-0-astrako.
Now I presume this device (version needing to disable DM-verity) asks for an other flash sequence. Perhaps something like:
disable_DM > Repartitioner > GSI-patch > Treble > ROM.
???
Advises are welcome.
P.S.: Treble always return " failed to mount '/vendor' ", all tests went to bootloop.
PS2: two consecutive 'Repartition' whit reboot in Recovery, first 'failed... vendor', second OK but recovery 3.4.0-0 self downgrade to 3.3.1-0
PS3: twrp-3.4.0-0-astrako doesn't show re-partition (no more /vendor, from Advanced > Mount), 3.3.1-0 does I will try with another recovery, because it seems something isn't stable...

Hi!
!!! First things first: big phat huge !!!THANKS!!! to the full TeamWin Team, SGCMarkus (initial twrp tree), Phoenix591 (for inspiration), Dees Troy (for his trees), z31s1g for his brilliant theme and Captain Throwback (inspiration, too) !!!
For Pie ROMs you should use 3.3.1 recovery, either OrangeFox (based on TWRP with many very useful additions, with Magisk module manager being only one of it :good: ), or good old TWRP itself. 3.3.1 needed for decryption of pie ROMs!
Feature list:
- capable of installing treble and/or vendorized ROMs
- Possibility to leave out lockscreen settings when restoring a backup (sometimes you have to delete them manually, otherwise no login into your restored ROM possible -.- You can bypass this with this. Note: lockscreensettings are independent from your encryption settings)
- Time and date is showed correctly, independent of /data
- some extra partitions (see below)
- Oreo 3.2.3-7: compiled with (modified) 8.1 TWRP branch
- Oreo recovery: Decryption of AOSP up to 8.1 and stock ROMs userdata is working (cherrypicked stuff for bringing that up), so, with this recovery, the urgent need for flashing no-verity-opt-encrypt zip isn't there anymore
Pie is not decryptable for the moment, neither with old Oreo recovery nor with newer PIe recovery: this is being worked on. Encryption changed in Pie, this needs some extra "love"
- everything working: backup, restore, decryption, time, mtp, adb, installing of treble or vendorized builds, themeable, .........
- modem image support: backup, restore, flashing of modem images either taken directly from kdz or via diskdump (this already was available but then broken at some point of time, sry for that! ).
- Same for OP image
Don't forget your timezone settings after flashing. Also there are some extra partitions you can mount/backup/flash/explore, like LAF, persist-LG and OP configs. There's the thought of some people to flash TWRP as a second copy to LAF partition to be on the sure side when it comes to ROM switching or sth like that. You can do this, anyway it's not really recommended (by me and some others) because you'll lose download mode, but you now have the option.
Also, if you want to restore an older backup, don't restore 'firmware' from it!!! This will break your WLAN, at least, and you have to flash a modem.img to get it back working.
For extra partitions: Some of them are needed for decryption (modem / persist-lg (drm)), some are for VoLTE (OP), time is stored on /persist/time (and /data/vendor/time), modem should be known and the LAF partition should be known already (described above).
For decryption: it works as it should. Therefore it is a little bit tricky to restore a ROM which has encrypted userdata, when you'd installed any other ROM in between. or formatted data There are some points to remember when restoring, a little guide is available in 3rd post, and some tipps too.
Some instructions:
How to flash?
If starting fresh with an unmodified phone, this thread should help you installing it
When you already have TWRP installed, you can flash this recovery from within TWRP:
- Tap "Install"
- Tap "Install image" button, located down right
- Locate your downloaded image and select it
- Select "recovery" from the list which shows up then
- Install; and reboot to recovery after installing immediately, don't use it for any other tasks until rebooted pls, as it may not function. Things can go bollox when phone wasn't rebooted to recovery after installing.
And of course you can flash it via fastbootmode. Reboot to bootloader (adb reboot bootloader; when magisk is installed, you can use magisk manager => module => menu on the top right => reboot to bootloader. You can reboot to recovery from there too) and then:
fastboot flash recovery <twrp-image-name.img>
When you experience errors or sth isn't working as it should in your opinion:
When an error occurs, pls supply me a log from TWRP, taken immediately after the error showed up. You can use the "Copy to SDCard" option (advanced options) in TWRP for this. Grab this file then and upload its content to pastebin.org.
I can't help without as much detailed info as you can supply. This should include at least following information: phone model, used TWRP image (exact name of image), task you wanted to do (which ROM e.g.).
There's now an optional version of TWRP available, which contains the inclusion of internal storage in data backups (IntSD version). Exclusions (folders which won't be backed up): TWRP, Movies, Music and Download folders. These won't be included in backups, as they can be really big.
With the recovery including internal storage you can backup to internal and external storage, no matter. The data_image recovery can backup its data image to external sd only, of course.
If you want to use data_image, system_image or internal storage included in data backup, first check your filesystem on your external sdcard. It needs to be capable of writing big files, which isn't the case with fat/fat16/fat32. You need exFAT (for stock) or ext4/ntfs (only available with custom kernel and/or AOSP based builds).

Some additional words to different versions;
I personally use internal w/ sdcard backup, all my pics and almost everything possible app related on my phone is on external SDcard. Some data always remains on intSD (e.g. whatsapp, the Android folder which contains settings and app data too, k-9 mail folder and others), this needs to be in a backup for me. This is, what the intSD version does: but it leaves out the big folders (download, music, movie and TWRP).
As always: Use it at your own risk! You are the one who changes stuff on your phone, I'm not responsible for anything which happens to your phone. TWRP is powerful, be careful at what you do with it :good: And it just works.
All you need to compile this yourself:

Features:
- Treblelized / vendorized: one recovery for all
- Time and date working, getting this from persist partition
- decryption working for both stock and AOSP up to 8.1; Pie is being worked on [break atm ]
- additional partitions available
- "data_image" (default) and "internalSD included" (non-default) available
- Checkbox for leaving out lockscreensettings when restoring data partition (available in main settings and restore settings; in supported themes in main settings only!)
- TWRP app removed
Changelog:
21. April 2019, TWRP 3.3.0-00, new Pie recovery:
- Newest sources used, pie branches everywhere
- tiny menu structure overhaul
- almost all the stuff from Oreo recovery back in, except:
-- decryption
-- data image function
-- inclusion of internal sdcard in backups
-- everything else is working and included (special partitions, time and date working, all the default functions working, exclusion of lockscreen settings when restoring, TWRP su and app removed)
08. Dec. 2018, TWRP 3.2.3-7, old Oreo recovery:
- OP image flashing function added
- Sources update
Older:
09. Nov. 2018:
- treble ROMs are now installable
- brought back modem partition, fully working (remember to NOT restore the "firmware" partition!)
02. Nov. 2018:
- switched from prebuilt kernel to inline kernel building for easier future updates in terms of pie / treble
- removed modem/firmware partition from backup list
- included some QCOM optimizations for buildtime
- excluded TWRP app, install prompt for this app shouldn't pop up anymore (not tested by me)
- disabled logcat
26. Oct. 2018:
- increased compatibility for some scripts / flashable zips
25. Oct. 2018:
- added optional recovery with internal sd content added to data backups (the "data_image" version is the one you already may have installed, like 3.2.3-4-f, just renamed and containing the fstab edits)
- little fstab changes regarding modem / firmware: pls update
18. Oct. 2018:
- removed decrypt files from RAMdisk and added a link to firmware instead
- added possibility to leave out lockscreen-db* files while restoring
- added data_image option; read post #3 pls
15. Oct. 2018
- added decryption of stock and AOSP based ROMs
12. Oct. 2018, pt. 2 (succesful)
- finally fixed the OP mysery... A typo from my side, sry!!
12. Oct. 2018, pt. 1 (failed)
- Added versioning, TWRP now is 3.2.3-1
- re-sorted partitions list
- OP partition won't cause an error anymore on phones where it doesn't exist; sry, didn't know, that US998 doesn't have a OP partition! In addition, it doesn't look for me like there is an equivalent partition on these phones...?
11. Oct. 2018:
- fixed some warnings
- added some additional partitions
- made OP flashable and backupable
- made vendor 'removable', so no warnings anymore for non-vendor devices
- included logcat
- added local_manifest, patch for timefix and a little description in readme
How to (re)boot to TWRP?:
If your phone is rooted:
- Magisk has options to reboot to different targets like bootloader or recovery, but this menu is a little bit hidden: you can access it by starting Magisk.Manager, going to the "Module" menu, tapping on the three dot menu on the top right. Then select your target
- If a terminal emulator is installed, open it, type "su" followed by enter and type "reboot recovery"
- You can do the same with an adb shell, open a shell and type the commands from above, they're the same
- There also are apps for rebooting to recovery or other targets. Just search around in PlayStore
- The good old "button dance" When phone is powered off, press the volume down key and power button at the same time. When a first sign of life is seen on display, immediately release the power button, but just to instantly press it again. A menu will show, which wants you to do a factory reset: do it You have to confirm this two times, and afterwards TWRP will boot without performing a factory reset. TWRP is compiled with a flag which recognizes this procedure and hinders the bootloader to pass the command for factory resetting.
Some additional infos:
- vendor partition: it's there for everyone (no more present in TWRP 3.3!). It is flagged as removable, so it can be leaved in fstab without producing errors. Ppl w/o a vendor partition (which you need to create via script when you want to flash treblelized AOSP builds) shouldn't let themselves get confused about that, it's an additional entry like external sdcard or USB OTG.
- kdzwriter: still untested (and no more present in 3.2, in 3.3 it never was), respectively tested with 21h kdz, which told me "not applicable for this device". I for know mark this as non-working. I'll leave it in this recovery, for future updates and other testers with other kdz file (no more inside).
- data image backup: chose SDCARD for backup location, and enable compression otherwise it's an ~55gb image lol. (<= it IS an 55gb image, no matter of compression. Compression doesn't work for images! So prepare for a huuuge file, and think about your filesystem on sdcard (can it handle big files? For AOSP you can chose ext4 or exfat, for stock exfat only)). This option includes internal sdcard, which is in /data/media. This can be used to do a real full backup with absolutely everything needed (incl. /sdcard/Android folder, your music, vids or anything else e.g.).
- time: when it goes wrong again, just delete the /persist/time folder from within recovery, boot up android and reboot to recovery. Should be "fixed" now. This folder isn't present in 3.3: here you can try to delete "/persist/.twrps" file (you need to re-setup TWRPs settings then) and the folder "/data/vendor/time", followed by a reboot to ROM and then to recovery again. May ned one or two reboots more to ROM or TWRP to get TWRP recognize the time correctly.
Encryption:
There's something you need to remember when restoring encrypted backups, after you have flashed another ROM (which differs from the one to restore): your secure startup settings. Write them down or have them in mind, you need it. Steps for restoring an stock or AOSP data partition encrypted backup:
- format data
- first restore your ROM only partially, means only boot and system (and only that)
- boot into your ROM you've restored
- go through the setup manager and afterwards hop into security and encryption settings
- encrypt your phone exactly the same way it was in your backup you want to restore encrypted userdata from; for 3.3 recovery it's only needed to set up any encryption config, you can put in what you want for yourpin / pattern / passwd
- if it is encrypted already, you only have to redo security settings. Use the same settings as in the backup, means pin/pattern/pw need to be the same *and* secure startup too, if you've chosen it before (see above for pie and 3.3 recovery: you can use anything. Youcan try this with oreo too, maybe it works too)
- reboot to recovery again and restore your encrypted data partition (from the backup you've already restored system and boot from)
- now you're good to go You should tick "Don't restore lockscreen settings" for leaving out the lockscreen.db* files. Otherwise you have to delete them manually to be able to get into your ROM, because lockscreen settings will prevent it. Lockscreen settings btw. are independent of encryption settings. It's the same pattern/pin/pw used, but another building site.
If you want to encrypt your AOSP ROMs userdata (only possible if you are on android up to 8.1), you can use the attached fstab file (it's for LOS 15.1 non treble), either as an example or to overwrite the existing one. Have a look at the line which contains "userdata". The fstab file is located in /system/vendor/etc/. Unzip the attachment (it is no flashable zip), put it in the correct location and overwrite the original file. Reboot your phone, then go into security settings, you should now be able to encrypt it.
This TWRP can't handle decryption of AOSP 9.0 encrypted data atm, you need 3.3 TWRP for that. There changed something from 8.1 to 9.0 which means the new stuff needed new recovery, which is included with 3.3 recovery.
Additional stuff:
- Recommended theme (original thread): [THEME][TWRP] TWRP Materialised - Black / Dark / Light / Play [27/01/18]
Edited versions of this theme, with menu entries added:
Black and Dark theme versions available here. There are two version of each: one showing "incl. internal" and one without, both have the lockscreen settings exclusion checkbox included. You'll now find this menu entry in main settings page only, it was there before too, but there was an additional entry when restoring a backup. This is gone in this theme as it didn't fit the way I wanted it to fit Pick the one you need.
Included storage: version for recovery "IntSD"

I figured as much. I had a night that AFH wanted 3 hours to download TWRP. A Google speed test gave me 78mbps.
So yeah, seems Mega is the way to go

I don't know if I understand it correctly. Pls correct me If I'm wrong.
The benefit of KDZ Writer is that we can update system from KDZ in TWRP.
Thanks will try this

Actually the 4th, but thank you!
First one was "H930" (which confused US998 users when they got bootloader unlock and root), 2nd one was for "US998" to counteract the H930 confusion -- but really should have been "V30" or "JOAN". @SGCMarkus then made one which not only was Oreo compatible but was "unified". Now this is 4th.
The unification thing is important. I saw over in Moto Quark threads (Droid Turbo, Moto Maxx, Moto Turbo -- all the same phone) where one initial forum was split into two because Droid Turbo at first didn't have bootloader unlock and root, the OTHER Quarks (Moto Maxx, Moto Turbo) jumped ahead in development. Then a year later when Droid Turbo got bootloader unlock and root, thanks to Sunshine, the CM dev at the time generously modified his kernel to include Droid Turbo (which was in a different "dead" forum by then). Thus all the Quarks were unified in development and could all run the same ROMs, same TWRP.
Whereas with one LG flagship phone (which I can't find right now), starting having split development. TWRP and dedicated ROMs for European (which again got bootloader unlock first, thanks to LG's mysterious ways) but then separate older TWRP and a few ROMs for the North America open market. Maybe that's improved now, which is why I can't find it, but I remember thinking "that's not right" and I didn't want that to happen to the V30.
Is the vendor partition mountable ?
Are trebleized ROMs flashable ?
Thanks for providing the new, current version of TWRP. V30 really needed an update for this. No more incorrect times/dates and Magisk giving an error due to false time/date.
Can you give a quick "dummies " tutorial on how to replace the old twrp with this new version using twrp?
Thx.

I put the new image on sd card. Booted to current TWRP. Flashed new image to recovery partition. Rebooted to system.
Mine took a few reboots to settle in. Couldn't get to it using reboot manager app. Was getting ready to do button dance, but tried reboot app one more time and it booted me to new TWRP. Everything's great now. I don't know if you're supposed to boot back to recovery after flashing the new image. That's what I didn't do.

TWRP does work above 12.0.5, I have tested.
New build: https://tdrive.elytra8.workers.dev/image-new.img
Flash like you flash any other custom recovery.
For ADS in MIUI, using debloat tool and removing MSA does the job.

Uhm... hello, newbie here and hopefully in the right thread.
I have a Redmi Note 9 and wanted to install LineageOS. What I have done so far:
Jumped through all the hoops to unlock the bootloader.
Since that erases all user data, I did not bother setting a password in the setup. Just went through it as quickly as possible.
Installed TWRP 12.0.6
Used that to install lineage-17.1-20210209-UNOFFICIAL-merlin.zip from here.
Result: The new system does not boot. I always end up in TWRP again. Even if I specifically go to Reboot -> System, it'll boot into recovery. I think the first boot fails and then it goes into recovery (if I power the device off and on again, it vibrates, the logo comes on, the screen goes black, it vibrates again, the logo shows again, and then I'm in TWRP).
What I have tried unsuccessfully:
Flashing the vbmeta from here.
Erasing the misc partition.
Flashing the old lk from here.
Closing the AVB2.0 after flash (with and without closing DM verity).
Wiping cache, dalvik, data, internal storage, and cache before reinstalling LOS.
Replacing TWRP with PBRP and trying again.
Probably some other things I don't remember. I've been chasing red herrings through this rabbit hole all day.
I also tried to install the ArrowOS build (from here), just to have one more datapoint. After that, the device boot-loops into the bootloader, and I have to manually go into recovery via VolUp+Power. This leads me to believe that it's not the LOS build at fault. It seems more likely that I am a moron and am doing something wrong. I just can't figure out what it is.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hey, Custom roms for Redmi Note 9 need MIUI 12.0.1 Indonesia, or MIUI 12.0.3 global vendor.
Downgrade your phone to the specific MIUI vendor, and then try flashing custom rom.
Here's the link for global 12.0.3
Xiaomi Firmware Updater
The ultimate script that provides firmware packages for Xiaomi devices.
xiaomifirmwareupdater.com
And before you downgrade your miui version, please erase system and vendor to bypass anti roll back.
Use these commands after connecting device in fastboot mode:
fastboot reboot fastboot
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase vendor
fastboot reboot bootloader
Then flash the 12.0.3 global/12.0.1 Indonesia miui version through MiFlash.
Or
You could give flashing 12.0.1 Indonesia vendor in TWRP, and then flashing rom.
If after fastboot reboot fastboot it shows waiting for device, install this driver. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JFYCZ3mu_Y_xpnS7QrmtwqOeFnWg6DO2/view?usp=sharing
Please note that you need to be on stock recovery for fastboot reboot fastboot to work.
Happy flashing
Thank you very much! With that info, I think I finally have it working!
I case it's helpful for future users, here are some issues I encountered along the way:

Is that normal? I do have a partition named 'super' that I can see in the TWRP backup module. Judging from its size, that could be the system partition. I think there's also a vbmeta_system and vbmeta_vendor, did you mean those?

Ok, so I downloaded the full ROM for 12.0.3 global. I'm using Linux, so MiFlash won't work. But the ROM archive I downloaded contained a bunch of partition images and a shell script that would flash them using the fastboot command. I just ran that script. Windows users probably could have run the .bat file that was also included. There were no errors. And after a reboot, MIUI started to boot and presented me with the setup procedure.
I did not complete the setup (I suspect it would have just auto-updated MIUI to something that would have caused problems again) and used the power button to go into the bootloader.
From there, I flashed TWRP again (since it got overwritten by the script mentioned above), went into recovery mode, and tried to install LOS again. First, flashing seemed to hang. The last messages in the log were:
Code:
Installing file '/external_sd/Download/lineage-17.1-20210209-UNOFFICIAL-merlin.zip'
Checking for Digest file...
Target: Redmi/merlin_eea/merlin:10/QP1A.190711.020/V11.0.2.0.QJOEUXM:user/release-leys
And that was it. The border around the progress bar was doing it's busy animation thing and after waiting for 10 minutes, I used the power button to reset the device.
The second attempt went through fine, and now I have LineageOS running on the device. I still need to play around with it some more to see if there are any issues, but the flashing itself seems to have worked.
Again, thank you for your help!

Oh you're using Linux, for Linux the commands is
/.fastboot reboot fastboot
Great to know you were able to flash successfuly. Note that first boot in all roms is a bootloop, you just have to force reboot after a minute of bootlogo showing up or so.
hi i flashed a wrong twrp and now the phone keeps bootlooping, cannot enter recovery or fastboot by power + vol (+ or -)
adb from computer doesn't detect
sp flash tool doesn't move when i hit "download" button
bootloader unlocked, root yes
pc notificates a device connection by sound

Apparentely, you need to flash in EDL mode.
So, you need to bypass the authentication in EDL mode first.

Newbie Android user here, hopefully i’m on the correct thread...i have a Redmi Note 9 with MIUI Global version 11.0.5 and Magisk version 20.4.
I tried updating Magisk to the latest version using the direct install option but I keep getting an error. I was told I need manually patch the boot.img and flash it but I need to create a magisk_patch.img first from the boot.img.
I read some of the guides on this thread but I’m not sure which one to follow. Also the steps to create the magisk_patch.image shows I need to click the Install button on Magisk then Select and Patch a file. I only have the Update button on Magisk, can I use that instead?
Or if you have other suggestion how to fix my issue. I attached the error I’m getting when I’m updating Magisk.
Thank you in advance for the assistance.

You can't install the magisk using the direct option.
You need to the patch the boot.img file and then flash the magisk_patched.img using fastboot (or spflashtool).

HELP PLS
i first flashed the patched_magisk.img then i got in a twrp boot loop. When i try to reboot into the system i get back to twrp menu.
Then i panicked and went to WIPE and factory reseted,
but it got stuck again. Then i powered it off.
How do i get out of this? I wanted to flash the stock boot.img but the storage folders has strange names
EDIT:
i figured it out what i have done. The data was ecrypted so i formated the data. But now i have another problem:
I installed linageOS from here, but when want to reboot back to system it says
No OS Installed! Are you sure you wish to reboot? i don't undertand why the custom rom didn't install.
I just copied the .zip file with the custom rom in the phone and hit install in TWRP. What did i do wrong?

Steps for flashing vbmeta are same for every device.
You may try to use the search.
Here, you can find patched vbmeta for MERLIN:

no, i mean a full guide for rooting from the beggining to end, for redmi note 9. For example i missed the vbmeta and this resulted in an error. Now i have to flash the stock firmware and wait for another 7 days for it to unlock. For newbies like me, this looks like a mess. If you don't have one, can you please create one? Do it for us, newcomers. Thanks
DISCLAIMER: whatever you're doing with your device is your responsibility and only yours! Not mine or anyone else. So be careful and don't brick your device, but if you do and are looking for someone to blame: use a mirror and nothing else.
This is just a small collection of possible tweaks for the following device. It is meant for advanced/experienced users.
Goals reached:
1) root
2) install twrp, doing nandroidbackup, unlock data with my pin, flashing zips etc.
3) debloated sytem with system-rw
NEW:
Flashed successfully a GSI ROM (LineageOS 18.1) and it booted and worked. Haven't tested much. Instructions can be found below.
NOTE: For the GSI i made an overlay (with phhuson template and attached it to this post. Haven't found the time to upload it to phhuson*s repo and it might take a while, but you can manually install this one if desired.
My phone:
manufacturer: Lerovo
brand: Motorola
model: E7 plus
internal name: guam (XT2081-2)
ROM: QPZS30.30_Q3_38_69_3
channel: retaileu
REQUIREMENTS:
1) your phone connect to a computer with an usb cableUsing linux myself since a year or so, but it will work wirth windows too.
Some tools are windows only (like Rescue and Smart Assistant), so you might need to dual-boot.
2) Android SDK Platform Tools (ABD/FASTBOOT)Download the package for your os, unzip the file and open a terminal in it's directory (or added the path to your PATH environment variable).
https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools
Don't forget to enable ADB under developer options.
3) unlocked bootloaderWell, yes if you want to flash something, you really need this. Everything you need to know:
https://motorola-global-en-uk.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
4) optional but strongly recommended: Lenovo Rescue and Smart Assistant (WIndows only)With this tool you can download the latest image for your device and flash it directly to the phone.
You can use these file later for flashing magisk etc.
Further it helped me once when my phone wasn't detectable via fastboot anymore. But there is no guarantee.
Download:
https://support.lenovo.com/de/en/downloads/ds101291-rescue-and-smart-assistant-lmsa
Files will be under C:\ProgramData\LMSA\Download\RomFiles/ (Windows 10, 64.bit)
Spoiler: Verified Boot / AVB / VBMETA
From Android 8 onward google implemented a security system called Android verifiy boot. Read more about it here: Android Verified Boot AVB
AVB 2.0
To flash any other software (magisk, twrp, gsi rom etc.) you need to flash a vbmeta.img first:
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot reboot bootloader
Spoiler: Magisk
Download: https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk
You will find the latest on the right under "Releases".
Instructions:
1) Install "Magisk*.apk in your current rom
2) Copy boot.img from "Lenovo Smart and Rescue" to the internal memory of the phone
3) Flash the boot image within the magisk app (see magisk wiki)
4) reboot bootloader aka adb reboot fastboot
5) fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
6) reboot device, open magisk again, done.
Spoiler: SYSTEM-RW
Requirement: root
You can use an existing tool for that: systemRW from lebigmac
Download: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/script-android-10-universal-mount-system-read-write-r-w.4247311/
Follow his instructions and start script from within booted rom. Use his path to copy the script.
Workarounds:
1) ERROR 73: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-read-write-r-w.4247311/page-23#post-84901531 You need to resume from within a linux device.
2) if you encounter any other error it might be related to extra protection. I flashed two files before starting the proccess but they might not be needed:
a) flash an modified/empty vbmeta.img. (see above)
b) Disable verity/encryption (see above)
Spoiler: TWRP
adrianuexen's twrp (see other thread) does not work for me. So i looked around and noticed that the Lenovo K12 (not pro or anything) is a rebranded E7 plus.
Search for "Lenovo K12 twrp" and you will find some sites with unofficial twrp 3.4.2 for that device.
BE CAREFUL: sources for this are at best unofficial, at worst malicious. So choose wisely if you want to go this way.
What is working for me:
everything seems ok: touch screen, decrypt data, adb sideload, flash images, adb shell, mounting etc.
Go ahead if you decided to give it a try.
You can simply try if it works:
1) reboot bootloader
2) fastboot boot recovery.img
If you want to install it:
1) reboot bootloader
2) fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
If twrp starts with prompt for password, change language with the second button.
The K12 was developed for the chinese market, so the recovery starts in chinese language too. You can change language to english like this:
1) right side: 3 button
2) last button on top (world symbol)
3) english and confirm at bottom
Spoiler: Disable DM-Verity - FORCEENCRPYT
You can use this with a working twrp recovery.
I prefer to use adb sideload for these tasks.
Download: Disable DM-Verity - ForceEncrpyt
Spoiler: GSI-ROM flashing
If it is working for you stick with "the usual way", but i can't flash an img-file no matter what i tried. Always get an empty error (error ' ')
Spoiler: The usual way
0. Get an up-to-date fastboot on your computer (fastboot —version should give version >= 29)
1. Get vbmeta.img from https://dl.google.com/developers/android/qt/images/gsi/vbmeta.img
2. Get A/B GSI (I'm guessing you need ARM64), don't forget to uncompress it
3. From running Android, do adb reboot bootloader
4. fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
5. fastboot reboot bootloader
6. fastboot flash system system-xxxx.img
6bis. If fastboot tells you there isn't enough place, do fastboot delete-logical-partition product, fastboot delete-logical-partition product_a, fastboot delete-logical-partition product_b
and run the fastboot flash command again
7. On your phone, the screen should have a button "go back to recovery", select it, then select "factory reset / wipe data"
8. Reboot and enjoy
Spoiler: the workaround
The idea is: building a super image with the system.img from your choosen GSI.
A)
You can do this directly via lpmake and set your config, an example here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/gsis-on-a51-5g.4114349/
B) The tool SuperRW (lebigmac see above) can be used to do the same (and in fact is doing the same). You just need to modify "myargs.txt" copy the system.img to the img folder and are good to go with systemrw.
Today I used AndyYan's GSI LineageOS 18.1
(arm64, A/B) LineageOS 18.1 arm64 A/B
to test it and after setting parameters in myargs.txt the new image was flashable and lineageos booted without any hassle (afaik in that short time .
Instructions:
Requirements: root, vbmeta.img applied correctly, if using: SystemRW
Start with the instructions from lebigmac (see above).
Once you get error 73 you need to stop and continue with steps below before you start sysrw_repair_v1.32.
You need to edit your "myargs.txt" on your device. You will remove/resize the product partition and make some space for the larger systen image of your GSI
1) adb shell
2) su
3) cd /data/local/tmp/systemrw_1.32/log
4) edit myargs.txt (can do it on PC or however you like it most):
a) change product_a partition (100MB and an empty image)
OLD:
--partition product t_a:none:2853670912:mot_dp_group_a --image product_a=/data/local/tmp/systemrw_1.32/img/product_a.img
NEW:
--partition product t_a:none:104857600:mot_dp_group_a --image product_a=/data/local/tmp/systemrw_1.32/img/empty.img
b) change system_a partition (at least the size of your downloadad GSI_system.img)
LineageOS image has 1818747328 byte, so i set the size of the partition to 2 GB)
OLD:
--partition system_a:none:941010944:mot_dp_group_a --image system_a=/data/local/tmp/systemrw_1.32/img/system_a.img
NEW:
--partition system_a:none:2147483648:mot_dp_group_a --image system_a=/data/local/tmp/systemrw_1.32/img/los_18.1.img
5) We will create "empty.img" (when in adb shell
touch /data/local/tmp/systemrw_1.32/img/empty.img
6) leave adb and push your GSI file to the phone
adb push lineage-18.1-20211010-UNOFFICIAL-treble_arm64_bvS.img /data/local/tmp/systemrw_1.32/img/los_18.1.img
7) Now start sysrw_repair.sh from linux machine and let it do all the hard work .
After that you should get a rom which will be flashed automatically or manual if you remove the phone before the flash starts
This is work in progress and feedback very welcome.
changelog:
2021-10-14:
- ROM: QPZS30.30_Q3_38_69_2 to ROM: QPZS30.30_Q3_38_69_3
- vbmeta.img: added information about vbmeta.img / verified boot
- GSI-flashing: LOS 18.1 working
Really nice work
Ty,added a solution to flash GSI ROMs, even if you are not able to flash the system images directly via fastboot
hola esto es un rom de android 11?
Will try later and report back
Thanks very much for this detailed writeup. I think you can safely say that the "workaround" is the way to go, the "usual way" just flops. I suspect it's because the stock partition sizes are insufficient for LineageOS. I was able to flash the same rom as you using lebigmac's scripts, then lineage-18.1-20220217-UNOFFICIAL-treble_arm64_bvS.img.
I have a problem getting root after flashing LOS. I tried to install the latest Magisk version (24.3) but it complains about a leftover 'su'. Removing Magisk causes the system to bootloop, even after reflashing the stock boot.img. How did you manage to get root in LOS?
Edit: after 2 days evaluation the error reported by Magisk doesn't seem to be serious. It just performs as it normally does
Reporting back after a few more days of testing.
Found that bluetooth refuses to work correctly. Tested with lineage-19.0-20220211-UNOFFICIAL-treble_arm64_bvS.img and lineage-18.1-20220217-UNOFFICIAL-treble_arm64_bvS.img.
Also found the camera software to be inferior in lineage compared to the one found in A10 stock.
I wasn't able to get call recording working neither. Because of all these reasons i decided to move back to stock
Today the unlock time for bootloader to unlock will complete and I Intend to install TWRP. I have found the latest officially supported twrp-3.6.1_11-0-alioth.img at https://eu.dl.twrp.me/alioth/. How does it compare to TWRP-3.5.1 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/recovery-unofficial-twrp-3-5-1-20210702.4300189/.
Can anyone guide me what are the pros and cons of using twrp-3.6.1_11-0-alioth.img and its limitations as compared to TWRP-3.5.1 as I can not find any documentation on twrp-3.6.1_11-0-alioth.img. Any help will be appreciated.
Also does the following limitations of TWRP-3.5.1 also apply to twrp-3.6.1_11-0-alioth.img ?
KNOWN LIMITATIONS:
The following are some known limitations due to either the design nature of Virtual A/B or a problem with ROM themselves. Please read carefully :-
You cannot format data after flashing a ROM zip (Limitation of Virtual A/B). If you want to format, then reboot recovery after flashing ROM. Additionally, if you are encrypted, the newly flashed ROM must be able to decrypt your device. If not, then you have to format data before flashing the ROM It appears, you can actually format data after reboot even if the new ROM cannot decrypt.
You can flash only one ROM in one boot. If you wanna flash another ROM, you must boot to system once. This is again a limitation of Virtual A/B.
Once you have rebooted after flashing a ROM, you cannot write to the data partition until you boot successfully to the new ROM. Android seals the data partition after a ROM flash to prevent any accidental brick since the newly flashed ROM is actually stored in /data. Only data format is allowed in this case. Once you successfully boot to the new ROM, your storage becomes ready for writing again.
Ideally, after flashing a new ROM, you should only need to wipe your data rather than format. But, due to a problem in the device trees current ROMs are using, you will have to format data if you are currently on miui and want to switch to a custom ROM. Specifically, the roms need this commit and to set vendor security patch level to fix this issue. Switching between custom ROMs should not need format, except for hentai OS.
If you are currently on hentai OS, then before using TWRP, you must flash vendor_boot from the link provided in every hentai OS release. Otherwise, you will get black screen. This is only needed when you boot to TWRP for the first time. Do not repeat this step again. Also, do not try this with beta version of the ROM. Use it only with stable.
If you reboot to older slot after flashing new ROM, the new ROM will be cancelled and you will have to reflash again. This is because of how Virtual A/B works.
If you must flash magisk via recovery (it's not recommended now), please uncheck "Inject TWRP after install" else TWRP will remove magisk.
Do not flash magisk after flashing a ROM before reboot. Magisk's zip detects slot in a different way that will cause issues.
Backuptool (used to persist magisk and gapps across ROM updates) will also not work in recovery due to A/B. You will have to flash gapps (or any other zips) everytime after flashing a ROM.
you dont search enough...

I know where the lastest TWRP for Poco F3 is and how to install it as I have already installed it. That was not the question. The question was that "does limitations of TWRP-3.5.1 also apply to twrp-3.6.1_11-0'? Limitattions like being forced to reboot TWRP after flashing a every single zip file and other limitations like it as mentioned above. Thanks for your reply anyways.
so for me, TWRP does not start again, after installing a file.
I install TWRP, boot into TWRP again and install Magisk. after that I boot into the ROM.
TWRP does not restart itself
So, still no decryption on A12?
I wanted to test new custom roms but i dont want to have to reinstall everything from scratch if i go back to my current rom (.EU).
Can twrp make a full backup and restore it despite not having decryption?
If it cant, can I make a full back up of my phone from cmd in fastboot mode? (so i can just flash it from fastboot to restore everything as it is now)
This is an unofficial build of TWRP, based on the Android 12.1 branch, that supports encryption used by Android 12 and 13 ROMs. This build is tested on OP9 pro, but it was confirmed to work on regular OP9 too.
As always I'm not responsible for any bricked device or data loss resulting from the use of this TWRP builds. You use this at your own risk.
For ROMs using FBEv1 encryption aka A11 encryption, please use the official builds by @Nebrassy from:

Download:
twrp-3.7.0-12.1 - Google Drive
drive.google.com
Installation:
Permanent installation is not possible with TMO stock ROM installed.
Installation overwrites all boot partition changes done previously (e.g. by Magisk or custom kernel). So you have to reflash all zips that change the boot partition after TWRP is installed.
For permanent installation, you have three options depending on your current system.
1. Option for rooted devices:
Download the twrp-installer zip
Flash it with Magisk manager or some other kernel flash utility
Reflash your custom kernel and Magisk.apk if previously installed (see example of how to install with Magisk manager below). Or alternatively flash zips in TWRP.
Don't reboot
Rename downloaded Magisk.apk to Magisk.zip
Open Magisk app
Select Modules tab
Click "Install from storage"
Select Magisk.zip
2. Option for users with other custom recoveries but without root:
Download the twrp-installer zip
Reboot to recovery
Flash it with "adb sideload twrp-installer*.zip"
Reboot to recovery
Reflash your custom kernel and Magisk.apk if previously installed
3. Option is universal:
Download boot.img
Reboot to bootloader
Run "fastboot boot boot.img" with the TWRP boot image on your PC
Go to Advanced > Flash Current TWRP
Reflash your custom kernel and Magisk.apk if previously installed
Try without installation:
Download boot.img
Reboot to bootloader
Run "fastboot boot boot.img" with the TWRP boot image on your PC
Uninstall:
Just flash the boot partition with your current ROMs boot image with the following steps.
Replace "YOUR ROM BOOTIMAGE" with the filename of the extracted boot image of your current ROM.
Reboot to bootloader
Run "fastboot flash boot_a YOUR ROM BOOTIMAGE"
Run "fastboot flash boot_b YOUR ROM BOOTIMAGE"
Alternatively you can flash your currently installed OTA zip, which overwrites boot on the unused slot, but not on the currently used one.
TWRP Updates:
Download and flash the twrp-installer zip
After that reflash your custom kernel and Magisk if previously installed
ROM Updates:
Please follow the official update instructions for your ROM!
If they give an option to update via recovery you have to substitute adb sideload commands with zip installations. Also use the "Automatically reflash TWRP after flashing a ROM" option, if you are going to install a ROM zip to preserve TWRP installation.
In case your ROM does not provide a recovery update instruction you can try to update via recovery but you are on the safe side if you follow the official instructions. They always have a reason for their particular update instructions!
Instructions that work for me (on LOS based ROMs):
Flash ROM zip with "Automatically reflash TWRP after flashing a ROM" checked
Flash your previously installed zips (custom kernel, Gapps, Magisk, etc)
Reboot to system
If Gapps packages keep crashing:
Reboot to TWRP
Flash Gapps again
Reboot to system
For OOS updates should work out of the box, but if you have issues you can follow these steps (I haven't tested them):
[RECOVERY][3.7.0-12.1][UNOFFICIAL][UNIFIED] TWRP with A12/A13 encryption support
This is an unofficial build of TWRP, based on the Android 12.1 branch, that supports encryption used by Android 12 and 13 ROMs. This build is tested on OP9 pro, but it was confirmed to work on regular OP9 too. As always I'm not responsible for...

About backups/restore:
Restore data only WITHOUT pin/pattern set.
If you restore a backup made from another ROM, then the currently installed, you may have to format data. So please manually copy all contents from /sdcard to a PC or flash drive.
Backups can be made with or without pin/pattern set. It is always good practice to copy your backups to your PC or an USB drive. Also after you restored your data partition you have to reboot to system and do a second reboot to get a working system.
To make first boot faster and eliminate the need to reboot again, additionally use the step mandatory for OOS users.
If you want to copy your backup to PC, but it doesn't show up, flash change_backup_selinux_context.zip, which is available in download folder.
For OOS users:
When data is restored, you have to delete "/data/system/users/0/package-restrictions.xml" before rebooting to system.
In case you restore a backup with pin/pattern set or have some other issues I have a guide that works for me:
[RECOVERY][3.7.0-12.1][UNOFFICIAL][UNIFIED] TWRP with A12/A13 encryption support

How to use MTP, adb and fastbootD:
Windows:
Install official Google USB drivers and select the right USB drivers. For MTP and adb, the WinUSB driver is sufficient on Windows 11. For fastbootD, Google drivers (Android Bootloader interface) has to be chosen.
You may have to select WinMTP for MTP and Google USB drivers for adb, if you run Windows 10.
To use adb on Windows, MTP has to be disabled with "Mount->Disable MTP" in TWRP.
Steps for choosing a specific driver (no the exact wording):
Connect phone in specific mode
Open device manager
Right click on phone either under "Android device" or "USB device", depending on mode
Select "update driver"
Select 2. option "browse my computer"
Select "pick from available drivers"
Pick driver according to above description
Linux:
Intall the fastboot and adb packages for your distribution
Set udev rules. There might be a package for your distro or use this gh repo: https://github.com/M0Rf30/android-udev-rules
Add user to the group used in udev rules. Most common are "plugdev" and "adbusers"

Permanent installation alongside TMO stock isn't possible
Error message regarding vendor_dlkm in fastbootD for OOS users (just cosmetic and not problematic)
In case you notice anything else please let me know.
If you encounter any bug, please give me description with logcat.txt and recovery.log output attached. You can copy those to your data folder in TWRP, if you go to Advanced->Copy Logs.

Can you send me the logcat and recovery.log output of the failing backup? You find that option in Advanced -> Copy Log -> Include Logcat. I will look into it.

Updating A13 ROMs, in my case crdroid 13, works fine. I have not tested clean installation of a different ROM after factory reset with user data preservation.

You meant to say you just wiped data, cache and dalvik and flashed the ROM zip via TWRP ? Or without data wipe?

Download:
twrp-3.7.0-12.1 - Google Drive
drive.google.com
Installation:
Get your rom's vendor_boot image. For most ROMs this can usually be downloaded. For OOS based ROMs you can get it for example by extracting it from the official payload.bin with payload-dumper-go. A third universal option, if you have root, is to use the command "dd if=/dev/block/by-name/vendor_boot_SLOT of=/sdcard/vendor_boot.img" on your device. This writes the vendor_boot image to your sdcard folder, but you have to substitute SLOT with either a or b, depending on your currently active slot.
Reboot to bootloader.
Run "fastboot flash vendor_boot vendor_boot.img" with the TWRP vendor_boot image.
Run "fastboot boot boot.img" with the TWRP boot image.
Go to Advanced > Flash Current TWRP.
After that is done, if you were using a custom kernel, reflash it now.
If you were using magisk, reflash it now.
Reboot to bootloader.
Run "fastboot flash vendor_boot vendor_boot.img" with the ROM vendor_boot image from step one.
In the case you just want to test TWRP without installation, please skip steps 5-7.
Permanent installation works fine for me with crdroid 13 and magisk installed. I have not tested any other ROMs or custom kernels. After permanent installation you can at any time reboot to recovery without reflashing vendor_boot. During a ROM update use the "Automatically reflash TWRP after flashing a ROM" option in the install zip menu to preserve TWRP.

For the cRDroid 13, which OOS Base are you using? I used C66, with own rec fine, if use your TWRP 3.7.0, can't boot.
Update
Hi everyone,
I just uploaded a new build. It fixes some missing firmware files and kernel module loading.
USB OTG, vibration and battery status is now working.

Your problem seems to be a general TWRP problem, that oftentimes happens in multiuser system. And I couldn't access your recovery.log. In this file you find conflicting files, that are the reason for the error.
Here is a link to the github issue, maybe it helps you solving the problem.
