Nice idea! After hiding the navbar, I quickly realized how much I could use something like this! I'll have to try this out when I get a chance.
Only downside I see is that since we're changing the key layout file, even when the navbar is shown, the volume buttons would still act as home/back. Would be nice for the ROM chefs to have some sort of 'live toggle' so that it would switch to home/back when the navbar is hidden, and then back to default (actual volume) when the navbar is shown.
Cheers and thanks m8!
Op, pm sent.
That's a nice idea but how do you change the volume? You will have to install some kind widget.
Also this increase wear on your buttons, that's how I killed my previous phone.
there's a toggle in AOKP to hide and bring back the toggles, although this would be more convenient it seems like it would be a hassle to change those buttons whenever you needed your volume back
Thanks for the idea just FYI on 4.0.2 GSM the layout file is:
ROOT - SYSTEM - USR - KEYLAYOUT - Generic.kl but it worked just the same. It was item 114 and 115.
Working great so far. Also I put a volume widget on my home screen so that takes care of that.
There's a flashable zip for this on rootz, been using it for several days. I just long press my ringer toggle for volume adjustment.
what i wanna see is this:
tap the power button to show/hide nav bar
double tap to lock screen
hold down to power off
boom.

I could def see this being functional

My bad .dup post
or you could just shrink the nav bar down to 30dp!
still works well and its almost like its not there!
Pretty cool. Thanks. Works like a charm.
Even long presses on the volume replicates the same behaviour as I configured on the Nova launcher :
- Long press on the Home (vol up) key: shows recents apps
- Long press on the Back (vol down) key: kills app

How to... please?
I would lime the volume up to be home and volume down be back...but long presses be normal function......how do I do this?

Doesn't seem to do anything on AOKP 27. The default says WAKE and when I change it and then reboot the volume buttons still handles the volume.
how?
Teach me, please

I think people here are misunderstand the statement. "I just long press my ringer toggle for volume adjustment." He used the built in toggles(slient or vibrate) in the rom to get the the volume screen and make volume adjustments. The long press of the physical volume key is not adjusting the volume once the mod is made.

+1 I agree with this idea
Do you hate the physical home button like I do?
Do you wish you could use the capacitive menu key instead of home, and assign much rarely used menu key to the physical button?
Just flash the attached file in Recovery.
The second file is for returning to the original setup if you wish.
awesome gonna try this

I especially like how the physical button still wakes the device. so I can hit it to wake the device, then double tap menu for svoice
i wonder if there is a way to make the "back" button long press = context menu. then can avoid the physical button all together
Hey I tried it on my vzw gs3 and it didn't work. :O

This is for the international Galaxy S3. For the USA versions, there is a separate forum on XDA since most things aren't compatible.

I think context menu might slow things down. But I understand where you're coming from, we have 5 options for 2 capacitive buttons so 1 option will have to be assigned to the physical button. I guess it depends on individuals on which button is the least used. For me is the Search button. Maybe a proposal like this :
Capacitive Menu Button
Short Press : Home
Long Press : Menu
Physical Home Button
Short Press : Home and Wake
Long Press : Search
Capacitive Back Button
Short Press : Back
Long Press : Recent

Yes! Both keys are completely switched with all functionality, except that the physical button will still wake the device.
To other suggestions about more functionality, unfortunately I can only switch keys, I can't change the long press functions and such.
Great. Thanks
Does this work with cm9 or only sammy roms?
Works flawlessly with my device. Thank you OP.:good:

Hopefully one day it can be done like the HTC ONE X!
thanks, it works. but now my menu button does not vibrate anymore. it vibrates only in long press....
Installed it, running perfect!
This is how Samsung should do it.
Thanks a lot!!
Edit:
Short press menu button open menu
long predd menu button open taskmanager would be perfect!

I hate the home button but I hate more the lack of recents button.
Is there any way to swap the menu button functionality with that of "show recents"?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Any way to do this without root on the Note 4? I believe HTC offers this option on their M7 and M8 phones, so I really hope Samsung did the same since they switched it.
yes please! I believe it can be done but uncertain without decompiling the app doing some recoding and then recompile the results into a .apk file.

haha me too i want menu one touch menu and recent long press of home button
I didn't realize the back button still did menu with a long-press. Glad to have learned that rather than having to search the 4 corners of the screen to see where the menu in whatever app is hidden.
When root is found, it should be a simple thing to flip the functionality of it right?
Also, anyone else wish there was a flashlight quick toggle in the notification tray?
Let me start off by saying that this rom is so amazing. Brought back my galaxy grand duos to life. Huge difference from stock 4.2.2!!
One issue I noticed though: Press & hold home button activates recent apps AND now on tap at the same time!

and the question/problem is?
Like I said, press and hold home button is assigned for both recent app switcher AND now on tap. Which makes using now on tap impossible.

Make another 2 post and you'll be able to post/ask in the rom thread. You may have a better answer there than here, as Im not using the rom, so Im not able to provide better solution than this.
In cm12.1 under setting, there's button tab which have an option to set the button assign. See if your rom have the same option.
Edited: I just found this post, will gibe you the answer for your question.

Thanks, that was helpful.
AOSP does not have an option to change buttons. I love AOSP simplicity but the menu button is pretty useless on marshmallow. I'm trying to figure out a way to make it function as a recent app switcher instead.

I believe I read it in the aosp 6.0 thread about disabling the now on tap function, in Google setting I think. Check the link I gave, probably couple post before or after it.

Never had an issue, just practice getting used to the timing
If you want your screenshot on the desktop (and you use Windows), just try my adbgrab.exe (in the sig).
Code:
C:\>adbgrab.exe shot.png

Is there a 3-finger swipe for screenshots available in Samsung cause I'm new to this brand?

No, they have the palm swipe only as far as I know, although you have to activate it in settings first, for it to work... you can try an app to create a macro, (great feedback in the comments ,but one them says the phone needs to be rooted which may or may not be) based on whatever you want as shown in this video.... not English, in Hindi, but you can make out the details and process from the visuals.
If all else fails, the power and volume rocker low buttons pressed the same time will take a screen shot by default.

Where i can find long press on one hand ?
just my 2 cents; i use good lock and the module navstar. i've put in 2 extra icons in the nav bar (originally has 3: back, home and apps). the other 2 to the left side that have been added are power off and screenshot.

Men thank so much for this tips
From my end, I use the button mapper and set up volume down long press as screenshot. I tried with one hand gestures and somehow, I prefer physical button. Would love to use bixby routine instead but couldn't find a way to screenshot.
Tap tap is my go to. Simply double tap the back of the phone and bam!
Lol I always turn my phone sideways so I can do the volume down & power button press two handed!
