I've searched this forum but does anyone know how to display the battery in status bar like in old CM builds?
Do you mean battery percentage? No unless you flash a battery % mod then it won't be viewable. Its not an option in CMsettings for some reason, I think its due to the way that the battery is vertical and its not very big so theres not much room for numbers.
There are apps that can put your battery % in the notifications bar, but really this just drains more battery than its worth. What I've been doing is in CMsettings under Lockscreen you can set to always show the battery % on the lockscreen. That way every time you turn the phone on you can glance at the %.
what battery % mods will work on htc aria, ive been searching with no luck

An update for you OP, the builds I think after nightly #5 of CM7 have an option to show the battery % in place of the battery icon in the normal status bar now.
Is there an easy way (as in a simple flashing of a zip in CWM) to change the battery indicator in the notification area? The stock ICS battery indicator is not very informative (doesn't show percentage). I know I can add an icon to show battery percentage using Battery Monitor Widget, or flash another ROM, but I just want to know if something can be done to change the system battery indicator.
Thanks!
Settings, Display, Display battery percentage. Enjoy.

O my that's easy... thanks! Is there a way to get rid of the icon then? It's totally redundant with the percentage being displayed...

I have not found a way to remove it in the stock ROM. I actually enjoy the exclamation mark when at 4% or lower.

Nice mod should be added to system app
For some reason there are two icons for battery (one text/one icon) and they seem to be independent of eachother in the settings.
I have turned the text battery percentage off before but made a mistake flashing the update and had to start from scratch and now I can't find it

Thanks

The Viper rom comes with two battery icons, and many more can be downloaded from the Hub. You have two preinstalled -- a stock HTC icon and the Viper 5 icon which has embedded text in it. However, there is also a pure text percentage that is independent of the other two.
The battery icons can be found in VenomTweaks/Status Bar/Status Bar Tweaks/Status bar theme
Click on that and you will see the default internal battery icon. Click on that and you will see the Viper 5 icon. Apply which one you want.
Now go to Settings/Power and scroll down to "Show battery level". This is the stand alone text percentage you see in the status bar. Turn off or on.

HTC changed / eliminated the code for charging animations in recent bases. So the image is there but the system isn't telling them to show up, from what I understand
