So I loved the Betterbean Red theme enough to even buy the donation version on principle alone. I also love how he has even managed to theme a lot of third party apps, so it's not just the red on black alone, but a better theme all around. Unfortunately, it absolutely will not apply no matter what. I read a suggestion in the description to try setting the DPI to 240, applying the theme, and then setting it back to 160 (this was a generic suggestion for tablets in general, but presumably this also means that it would work on much lower DPIs than the Nexus 7) but even after I set 240 it still won't apply. I also saw a suggestion to apply the system theme, clear the cache for the theme process (I wasn't sure which, so did both just to be sure) then setting it, but still no good.
I don't get any errors or anything either. It just complains that it lacks resources for my resolution (which apparently all themes are pretty much supposed to do on pretty much all devices -- Betterbean Red X also says this on my phone with its 306 DPI.)
Oh, and just to be clear, I am running CyanogenMod 10.1. Same date release as the one running on my phone in fact.
If there's just absolutely no way to get this to work, is there any really dark theme with (not overdone) red hinting that actually WILL work?
A trick I use on my Toshiba thrive is tap and swipe - go to the theme beside it in the theme chooser hit apply and very quickly swipe over to the theme you actually want before the popup about missing assets apply anyway or the are you sure comes up - if you do it right the theme you want will be highlighted even though it thinks it's the other theme and it will apply the highlighted theme.
I am using betterbean red x on both my nexus 7 and nexus 4.Right now they are both running cm10.2 No DPI changes
Uhm... Yay for you? Unfortunately, as you can likely guess by the existence of this thread, that's not happening on mine. Just to be sure though, you're not using the 2013 Nexus 7, right? I don't know how much the differences between them could affect a thing like this, but they are different in some important ways at times.

Are you underclocking or something? Normal human response time is WAY too slow to be able to do that. Even after decades of gaming I can't do it. Well, I tried underclocking the CPU to about 100MHz so that it would take a lot longer to actually pop that message up than the ~1ms it seems to take as it is, but so far it's not working. Perhaps the other theme must work on its own for this trick to work? What is the other theme that you are using to do this? I've tried a couple of others and so far no good though. Then again, I can't seem to find one that does work yet.
EDIT: Let me ask this then: is there anything else that could affect themeing? Something else that could be missing, frozen, or etc? Both Themes and Themes Provider are clean and I've tried cleaning the cache among other things, but I have no clue what if anything else could possibly be interfering with themes on my Nexus 7. I don't think I've frozen anything or otherwise changed anything in this respect on my Nexus 7 that I haven't done on my SGS3 however, and Betterbean Red X works great on my SGS3.

sorry for the late response - no pc just mobile - it has to be a theme that has the missing assets message and even though it pops up there is a few extra miliseconds before touch only works for the message box - it can be done but it take several tries to get it . i think it is more luck than technique.
Works fine on all ROMs I flashed,.....which was every ROM on here

Ok, so I just rooted my tablet, my first time too. But I have a few questions.
I have no idea what custom recovery is? How do I get it, and what are some apps and stuff I should not do before I get it.
What are some apps you recommend? Keyboard apps, uh...any apps I guess.
My biggest question is, I downloaded a emulator called dolphin emulator, so I could play the old gamecube Pokemon Colosseum. But it wont work. I do not know if any of you use this program, but any help would be appreciated. The game actually starts, shows the nintendo symbol, goes to a weird grey screeen instead of the studios logo animation, and then turns black. The fps is around 21, and during audio or the grey screen, it goes to 13 - 15 fps. Any Ideas on what might be wrong? Maybe RAM or something of that nature.
What are things like Nova and Apex?
Also, what do i need to do to install roms? What should I have before I install a rom? And what kind of roms do you recommend?
um...and I guess anything else you could tell a complete rookie. I have no idea what I'm doing. OTL
also, what is the bloatware that i can get rid of?
ugh, basically, what have you done for your rooted note? What are some things you would recommend to another person for their device.
and for some reason i cant download SetCPU, so I downloaded CPU Tuner. What are some settings you recommend.

Ok, my first bit of advice is to start reading. Things like custom recovery are easily figured out with a little research. As far as I know, the only custom recovery we have for our tablets is TWRP 2.6.x.x, not sure what version they are on now since I am not using it.
As for what to do after root, that is up to you. Get the pro version of Titanium Backup, and SuperSU at the very least, they will be very important if you want to freeze/delete bloatware and modify your phone at all.
Can't help you with the Pokemon thing.
Nova and Apex are launchers. Try them out and see if you like one better than the stock launcher. I run Nova on mine.
To install a ROM, you will need to first download TWRP, then flash the ROM. Read the directions for flashing the ROM fully before you do anything.
As for bloatware, start by freezing things you don't use in TiBu, and go from there.
In all honesty, you need to read, read, read and then read some more. You don't want to turn your tablet into a $600+ paperweight.
As for me? I am rooted running the stock ROM, Nova Prime launcher, and I froze a bunch of bloat. It is plenty fast, smooth, stable, and it looks great.
lol the dolphin emulator won't work because it requires an extremely powerful machine. It will only work with maybe 2 or 3 devices currently.
The developer posted this in the app description:
"If you're expecting reasonable speeds out of this, you are sorely mistaken. This will run slow on every single Android device, no matter if it is the most powerful one in the world.
Some caveats
- It will crash. Alot.
- It might need to be force closed and ran multiple times to work.
- It will run slow"
Why immediately install new ROMs? There are no many ROMS for this device anyway. Rooting will help you to freeze unnecessary Samsung software, as already mentioned above (using Titanium). To try different launchers (Nova, etc.) you don't need to be rooted, just install and play with them. You have a powerful machine, learn to use it, use all the features (S Pen, multi-window, pen window, etc.) before playing with other ROMs.
Since you are rooted you must get this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646432
Makes multi window way more useful.
Also Xposed Framework and multi window manager so that you can add any application to the multi window menu.
Actually there are a lot of cool things you can do with Xposed.

I'd like to get some black subtratum theme for my A1 but one thing worries me if its gonna decrease stability of my phone even by slightest bit, like performance, or if its likely to cause any problems (visual or technical) after android updates, or i will have uptade the theme every time something changes visually in OS. One thing to note is that all i need is some black layout for my oreo (menus, default apps like calendar, keyboard, dialer, lock screen, etc), im not interested in customising any third-party apps, not even google apps. Also to note, im using Nova Launcher and wondering if there are no comptability issues with it.

I use substratum with swiftblack theme it is stable . If you uninstall first all overlays s in substratum manager and then update the theme and then reapply them after each update you dont have many bugs. Sometimes there are some bugs but they fix them . I dont think there is a decrease in phones performance. There is no issue with nova launcher. The thing you should do first is disable the autoupdate of apps in playstore. Update the apps when a new version of the theme is out. I use substratum with my mia1 with april update and with my s7(oreo). With my mia1 i use the nexus or pixel guide in swiftblack theme.

I use Pitch Black. It's perfect. The only problem you might get is if you have apps set too auto update. As some overlys have vto be set to app version. So YouTube etc can cause hiccups. But the Developer normally updates them as soon as new updates are out. Don't worry too much its easy to fix.
I've updated to the latest June patch with 8.1 Oreo. I've rooted with magisk and substratum works without any issues. No lags or performance problems. Battery also doesn't drain.

Guys im not going to root my phone, all i want is black themed system, not apps other than stock tools from android. Can i install it without applying it to other apps like YouTube, Facebook and all that? And does it cause any glitches after updates as a clean replacement for standard white theme from oreo? I will pass if its gonna bring any extra trouble for me, i simply dont want to deal with it anymore in the future, it just annoys me but a black theme instead white would be great.

You're not getting the gist of what we are explaining. We cannot post the black theme overlay you want because warez is not allowed in the forums. For one, you will need Substratum + you need to buy the Andromeda add-on if you're not going to root. Andromeda will use ADB commands from your PC to enable theme support on your Mi A1. Also, when you access themes through substratum, you can select which apps to enable the overlays on. You can skip the other apps and just theme the Settings app, framework and SystemUI. You will need to update the themes through Substratum whenever an update arrives for the theme you are using. If you are thinking this through too much, I would suggest stay away from theming.

Thanks, i think i will pass then. That sounds distracting enough for me. Even if its just a periodic update to the theme it will eventually piss me off on occasion when something suddenly breaks, and id rather have the least amount of distractions at the cost of worse design.

Most themes only breaks on third party apps. Settings app, SystemUI and Android Framework updates are usually minimal and doesn't lead to crashing. Updating the overlay through Substratum then rebooting fixes the issues easily.

I mainly followed the guide.
After updating to the June patch ( i had already unlocked my bootloader before May Patch)
1. Booted to latest twrp and made a back-up of boot .Renamed it to boot.img .
2. Then i installed magisk and patched the boot image.
3. Then from fastboot i booted with the Patched image . And installed magisk via 'Direct Install' method.
The phone rebooted. And it was rooted.
PS. In case u want the patched boot img for June, I'm leaving a link

First I thought why people hate on this os, I can deal with it, I love stock android but I have also used miui in the past so color os should be fine, but thinking that was a big mistake.
It doesn't support basic android 9 pie features like swipping right to clear banner notifications, a screen on time chart (leave alone digital wellbeing), dark mode of atleast some sort (all flashy white colours, cannot even take the amoled's advantage) and many more. Even a redmi phone with android 6 or 7 with miui 10 has all android 9 features and here's color os lacking even at the basics.
And even its own features are incompliant. You can only create dual apps for select 2-3 apps, unlike in miui where you could clone any app. Also what is this thing with the call menu when you receive a call, its of 2 kinds, one in which you have to swipe up/down to take/end a call and other being you just have to click the call pick/end button. They need to show their customisation skills there, wow.
And though the phone supports L1 liscence and has a hdr capable display it still doesn't support hdr content on netflix or amazon prime. Their answer to that is an osie vision effect feature in settings>display>osie vision effect, which btw to use you have to also enable smart slidebar(in convinience aid) and then go the supported app>pull out smart slidebar and then enable osie effect. All this then only to see that it says 'not supported in current app'.
Now the main reason for my frustration being not able to download files when the phone is locked. I put anything on download, may it be a video in youtube app or a file in chrome or any download manager app, it downloads only till 1-2 mins after the phone is locked. I come after an hour or so and the download is stuck there. How can one not be frustrated then.
So conclusion is to hell with color os, just waiting for a stable custom rom(pixel experience rom for that matter).

I guess so too. Because they don't have much time to deeply modify the OS.
I'm facing a weird issue on my Realme X. After updating an app on Play Store, I don't see "app updated" confirmation on notification panel. I need to open Play store to check if the app is updated or not. My play store version is 17.8.14. All other notification working like when an update is available, when I install a new app etc. Only I don't get notification confirmation after updating an existing app.

Clear data of play store & play services, reboot and let those update itself, then update your apps. Also check for if any specific notification is disabled for play store.

This doesn't help. I know all these workarounds and tried already. I have created a post on Google Community and it seems like most people are facing this bug starting from 17.8.14 update. And after 17.9.17 update, it's even worse. There is no notification from Play Store whatsoever (no notification when an update is available, when an update is completed, when a new app is installed successfully). Google has screwed the notification function on Play Store.

Well can't say. No issues here.
First Google phone (Pixel 6 Pro) in years! Anyways want to slim down and get rid of Google services on a phone. I am thinking of switching to Graphene OS but also want a ROM that fixes a lot of the bugs this phone has. Better screen color and brightness control and better battery. But would like to use the stock camera if possible. Rather not have to use magisk if it's avoidable.
Would a different ROM make more sense or are there other things Graphene can do that improves on Google's buggy and strangely limited version of Android on the Pixel.
Btw downgraded from a S22 Ultra for the purpose of giving Google's snooping eyes the boot but got use to the saturated colors on Samsung phones!. I am fine with the browser versions of YouTube, YT Music and Gmail.
Any and all suggestions and comments welcome.
To what do you refer when you say "... the bugs this phone has."?
I'd say go with GrapheneOS. You can use gcam if you like, I'd recommend with "gcam-services-provider" photos version, which avoids the need to install gservices.
Magisk should not be necessary unless you want to do something that just won't work without root, like call recording (BCR is the best choice for this), or make proper complete backups (seedvault backup is available, but won't back up any application that tells it not to, with root, neobackup is the best choice)
Youtube software should be replaced with Newpipe (open source youtube client). Gmail can be replaced with Fairemail (preferred) or K9Mail (now Thunderbird? https://k9mail.app/2022/06/13/K-9-Mail-and-Thunderbird.html).

Maybe bugs was to strong. More like behaviors like the auto brightness being way to dim despite constant adjustment to train it. It has been using Samsung devices for a while now. Android has been getting so good I stopped rooting and installing roms. However Samsung has gotten very irritating and bloated again.
Thanks for the help and suggestions. There where some root apps that allowed you to adjust the displays saturation and contrast. Is there anything like that for the Pixel 6 Plus. Samsung broke my eye with the saturated colors. Lol.
Also is possible to use an Android wear watch without Android wear or will I have to change to a Tizen (Samsung) or maybe a Honor Magic watch. Taking suggestions.
Also is rooting for Magisk necessary as I would like to keep things more secure.

Just an update. Graphenos install was super simple. Using Newpipe but looking for a YouTube Music streaming app since I listen to a lot of kpop which is hard to find elsewhere. Any ideas? Also using Open Camera for more control.
Grapheneos has a Saturated color profile so that fixed my color saturation issue!
Refusing to install even a sandboxes version of GPS.
