My display won't light up with new notifications - any ideas why? - Google Pixel 3a XL Questions & Answers

Hi everybody,
I'm running the Android 11 public beta and to be honest I've been doing so pretty much since I bought the 3a XL, so I can't remember if this was an issue beforehand. I am having absolutely no issues elsewhere.
Basically when a text, WhatsApp, Gmail or anything like that comes through I get the sound but the screen doesn't light up.
I don't have AoD activated (can't stand using them) but I do have the toggle for lighting up for new notifications activated. I have no power saving modes or do not disturb settings switched on and all notification settings for my apps seem to be fine. I don't want to reset my phone and start all over again as I really can't be bothered just for this one thing, and it would also use up my last slot with YouTube Premium so I'd have to call them to clear my device list again.
Please can someone think what might be happening here. Is this a bug with 11? Or can anyone think of anything else to try.
Many thanks

Maybe check lockscreen settings and see if you're not allowing the notifications there.

Show all notifications etc are on. When I tap the screen the notification is there so it's not hiding it or anything - it just doesn't light the screen up.

Double check all settings in Display > Lock screen display. I think all the action is there. I'm sorry if this is menial or redundant. Just offering up ideas, it could be a bug but I can't verify it since I'm not on 11.

Yeah sadly I've been through all the settings and I really can't find anything that would be causing this. I thought maybe it could even be a faulty proximity sensor or something but that's working fine too.
I was hoping that it was a known bug because then at least I know it'll get fixed, although this issue has survived the most recent beta update.

Here's a screenshot of my settings, not sure how much will match with yours but I can't imagine much difference. Either way I get notifications the way you want with these settings. If you don't you might file a bug report.

It's happening on my phone also. Maybe a bug in Android 11

At first I thought I was the only one suffering from this annoyance, but then I saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgvTFu6UKJI
See, the problem is that whenever I send or receive a message, this icon pops up. At first I thought I was delusional, but then it repeatedly became clear that this was truly a bug. I managed to get a screenshot of it (which was really difficult considering that it only pops up for about half a second). I want to know if I anyone else has had this issue, and whether or not someone found a workaround from it popping up. Anyone at all?
Are you using Hangouts?
Nope! Stock everything, and unrooted. Using the HTC messaging app

Probably Carrier IQ for some reason tracking your location. My LG G2 does the same thing.

This bothered me as well, but I have since gotten rid of it. Granted that you're rooted, you can download an Xposed module called NotifyClean. It listens for "notifications" in the status bar, and you have the option to disable them. Download/install/activate the module, turn on the listening feature, and send a message. When you go back into NotifyClean, you'll see "Data Usage". Select that, then select "Data usage is running". It should highlight the selection in red, and ultimately get rid of the little annoying icon that shows up for a split second.
It seems that I'm not the only one having an issue. Well hopefully there's a better work around for this because I don't plan rooting my phone for a long time! Flashing roms and tweaks could be addicting haha! Hopefully someone finds a better fix to hide this annoying notification!

Yeah, take it from someone that flashed a ROM today and every mod/tweak I could find... it gets addicting. I spent 8 hours at my computer today going over various mods and personalizing my phone. Unfortunately, I can't think of anything to help with your issue that doesn't involve root. If you know what is causing the notification then you may be able to go into settings>apps>all and disable the offender?

I managed to get a screenshot, and I checked what app was causing it but it was a system app called "Data Usage". Anyone know how to turn off data usage notifications? Turning off data usage alert doesn't help
This is normal behavior. While it shouldn't be popping up, its normal as in that it is what is done when a SMS/MMS is sent while on WiFi.
You can locate the app through Application Manager and tap it to Disable Notifications. This doesnt require root or anything.
Taking shots in the dark here, but there is a data usage section under wireless & networks in settings. In that menu there is a toggle for 'alert me about data usage'. You can then drag a slider up and down to set the cap for when your phone warns you about data usage. Maybe yours is dragged to the very bottom so it alerts you about any data usage?
Unlikely because it would show up during everything, but worth asking. Maybe just disabling the notification toggle would work. Also, does your carrier ship with specific software to monitor data usage? If so then check all of those apps settings to see if anything has any effect.
It doesn't matter whether or not the wifi is on, it still annoyingly pops up. I meant that you really can't disable notifications as it is a system app

Notifications disappearing (messaging apps)

Hello everybody,
I got a strange problem occuring only in a certain situation. In order to explain better, have a concrete example here:
I write a message in Whatsapp or Threema. Then I lock the phone by closing the flip cover: The screen then shows the clock from "Asus Flip Cover" and turns off after 5 seconds. So far so good. Now: When I get a message, I hear the notification sound. I open the flip cover and... the notification immediately disappears. So sometimes I miss important messanges, just because of this bug.
At first I thought that it is a third party app that is responsible for this strange behaviour. But yesterday I did a reset of the entire phone via the settings app and didn't even use a backup to restore it. The bug reappeared.
Apparently nobody else is encountering this bug, so before sending the phone back I thought that maybe someone has an idea or even solution for me. The phone is the ZE551ML (not rooted or unlocked) and yesterday I also installed the new firmware (.59); the bug was there since I got the phone, but as I said: I thought it is a third party app that is responsible for this behaviour and I had no time to reset it earlier because of exams and stuff... Is there another way to reset the phone? Maybe a better one than the one over the settings app?
Sincerely,
Christophe
Is autostart denying these apps from automatically starting? By default it denies all apps. D'you have smart-saving mode on with extend standby or the option that turns off data when screen is off?
Is your lockscreen set to show notifications?

The following are my settings under "Settings" -> "Sound & notification":
When device is locked: Show all notification content
App notifications: Threema and Whatsapp have no special settings
Apply Material Design: OFF
Notification access: ASUS Launcher
I'm sorry you're experiencing this. I'm tagging ASUS employee @Tuanies hopefully he can provide further assistance. I'm out of ideas since you have already factory reset the phone.
Does this happen if you disable the flip cover features?

You mean turning the entire Asus Cover View off? I just tried and the messages still disappear. Actually the screen turns on automatically, the lockscreen appears and they disappear within a second.
After the reset I even got the strange behaviour that messages arrive, sometimes, late or only when I open the specific app.
Do you have any notification filters set?

No.
Just tell me if you think the problem is hardware related or software related. Personally I wouldn't say it is hardware related but one may never know for sure.
I know the firmware from ASUS is quite buggy (and has a lot of translation faults btw.) and, according to some research on the internet, ASUS often tries to break the law by not repearing rooted devices even if it is entirely legal in the EU. So before unlocking the bootloader and trying an alternative firmware, I just want to be sure.

Sounds like a software problem, does it happen right after a wipe without anything else installed? Could just be an installed app causing issues.

What do you mean by "wipe"? Do you mean booting into recovery? As is mentionned above I did a reset via the settings of the phone. After this reset I only installed Threema and Whatsapp and the problem appeared again.
Does it happen before those two apps are installed?

How should I know? The problem appears with messaging apps, so I can't test it without them.
a possible answer
I think I had the same problem after arbitrarily swiping or tapping the wrong response to use CM lock for Asus with the latest updated.
Google "Lock apps" function integrated with CM AppLock" to navigate to a possible hidden app setting preventing you from seeing notifications and uncheck "Hide notifcations... " under the "Options" heading on said page.
shortcut:
(App Drawer settings, lock apps, input pattern you chose, settings (upper right 3 dots), uncheck "Hide notification")
I now have all my notifications back that I allowed in other settings.
I hope this helps.
I tried to post the URL, but I haven't posted 10 times yet.

Problems with screen brightness, LED notifications, Xprivacy / slowness

So I seem to have a whole bunch of problems with my D851, and am curious if others have the same problems and know of fixes. Mine has 20g (stock Lollipop) installed, and is rooted.
Main problem: enabling Xprivacy makes this phone become significantly slower. The settings menu crawls with Xprivacy turned on. Anyone else experience this?
Auto brightness is *way* too dim to use. Surely, I must not be the only person experiencing this? I see a few people mention it in passing, but it doesn't seem to be an big deal. Are people not using auto brightness? Or do most folks not have this issue? All other devices I have with Lollipop allow a brightness range if set on auto. This one doesn't ? Can I get this feature somehow?
Even when I set the brightness manually, it keeps getting reset to 100% some half the times it wakes up from sleep. Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know of a fix?
Also, the display off time never gets set. I set it to 30sec or 1min, and it always gets reset two 2 min.
The notification LED is virtually useless. It blinks once in like 20 seconds when I get an email (gmail app). I rely on this. Is there a fix to get it to blink every second or 2 seconds? Light manager didn't work.
What I don't understand is, since I experienced all these issue on pretty much a phone out of the box + rooted, I'm surprised they don't seem to be common problems.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I think that was a part of it, but not all of it. I tried flashing stock on a different unit, and I found that the brightness issue was largely (but not fully) better, and the display settings not getting set issue went away. The Xprivacy and LED notification issues remain, and will occur on all units as far as I can tell. I haven't seen anything here that contradicts that info.

Thanks a bunch for the info, this is good to know, and good to hear from another D851 user. The Xprivacy issue may be less easy to measure. The LED issue may be more objective. I have no trouble with changing LED colors. It's the blink rate that's at issue. Are you able to get it to blink say, twice per second, or even once per second when you get new email in your gmail app if you use that? Are you using any kind of an LED app?
Also, are you running Lollipop? Stock? Rooted? Thanks.

Notification sound with no apparent notification item

I love my new Pixel 2 XL but despite my best efforts to identify what app or system service was sending repeated (and annoying) default notification sounds but not showing any other message or indication, I finally hit on a solution that seems to work.
SET THE DEFAULT NOTIFICATION SOUND TO "NONE"
settings>sound>advanced>default notification sound
Then set the notification sounds to whatever you want for each app you actually care to hear from.

I have noticed this as well.
<notification sound> no new text or email...
For me, it's just easier to ignore the errant tone once in a while than to set notifications for individual apps (cause I'm totally lazy like that).
But THAT is the beauty of Android... to each their own and there are always multiple ways to skin that cat
Use a notification log
I had this same issue. Turned out to be an app I had disabled pop ups for.
I have a (potentially) better solution. Add a notification log widget to find the culprit:
1. Long press on home screen and go to widgets.
2. Drag the settings widget to the home screen.
3. In the list of options, choose Notifications
Now you can see a log of your notifications. Next time you get the sound but no pop up, go into the log and find the offender at the top of the list.
For me it was a game I didn't need so I deleted it, but you can remedy the problem as you see fit.

Glad you found it! Sorry I just saw this. I forget where I learned about this, but it wasn't easy to find. I'm glad I could pass it on to someone else, I'm sure it could be plenty useful.
I'm having the same issue but it's not even showing in the notification log. Makes me want to throw it out the window to be honest. There's time where it will go off every 30 seconds. Off to reset I guess and see if that works.
same thing here pixel 2 oreo 8.1 notification sound...no thing new in the "hot list" or email or message
very weird, and randomly at night too which is the suck
2019 and no change
Hello, same issue still persists in 2019. Every few weeks i must dump the default sound as it sets it self up again.
Still no idea why it does it, just a temp bandaid to curb the annoyance. I notice a slightly higher battery drain too, tells me something is running

Sounds like a re-install is in order...if you have an unlocked bootloader, when was the last time you've done an update via Full Factory image? I'd imagine all that might be sorted out by reinstall/updating; with the "-w" removed of course...
I hope you consider it, and I hope this helps...

Anyone else pop-up notifications not working?

I have noticed any of the apps that supports pop-up notification doesn't work? I'm pretty sure it's because of the notch being in the way.
Mine comes and goes. It's very frustrating!
I've experienced this a few times. A reboot fixed it. I read somewhere that someone said they stopped working after using the Pixel Stand. I haven't tested that to verify.
Mine come and go as well. The first time they stopped working, I checked Messages, and it somehow turned itself off (it was definitely on). Flipped it back on, and it worked for a few hours. Rebooted my phone yesterday and it's been working. I'm hoping for a lot of fixes in the November update...
I don't know if this is your issue or not but I found it yesterday on the interwebs.
Search settings for custom then select custom restrictions.
In here I had a check next to "Don't pop notifications on screen" when the screen is on.
I unchecked it and now I get heads up notifications on the applications that I turned them on for.

I have not yet tested the notifications when placing the Pixel 3 on the Pixel Stand so have not seen any caveats. But just see this as a temporary fix until Google releases the patch for the ambient notification bug. Hope it helped.

Didn't work. Unchecked this yesterday, took my phone off the stand this morning, no previews or popups... They really need to update their app. This is stupid. I have to reboot my phone every day...
