Hi
Updating to Android 10 overall went quite smooth. There were no visible issues at the start. But then I've noticed weird behaviour. For some reason notification sounds (SMS, calls etc) are disappearing and some default ones are loaded. Going into settings shows some numbers instead of notification sound name. I can't find any pattern to that behaviour. It just happens. And only restarting phone fixes that. It looks like phone is loosing access to sound files because when I try to change sound at that moment I don't have anything on the list. No custom sounds, no system sounds.
Have any of you experience something like that? I tried to look throughout the web but didn't get any useful results.

I saw this on my last phone but not this one. Sound files in /sdcard get numeric ids, which is what you're seeing.
Maybe forcing a rescan will help?

What's rescan?
I had this issue yet again. This time I took pictures of how the settings looks like. Sorry for the quality but Volume-down + Unlock button didn't take screenshot...
Hm...it seems I can't attach files...I hope I can post link at least: settings, selecting ringtone.

Heaps of apps can do it. Eg.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sdcard.scanner.free.vn&hl=en
I use midnight commander for file management and it can do it too.
Thanks. I tried that but it didn't help with this issue. Maybe that's because I don't have SD card.

You do, it's just not external. Quirk of legacy APIs from the early days

Are your nefua files in the "correct" location?
/sdcard/Notifications
I think that may help, even though technically they should be able to live anywhere.

This was mentioned in the rom thread but seems to have gotten lost, so...
I've put an .mp3 into my /system/media/audio/ringtones to use as a custom ringtone. Reboot and there it is in the ringtone list. Select it and all is good.
BUT, in a couple of days it disappears from the list and the ringtone is reset to something else.
The file is still in the right folder. It can be fixed with a reboot, but still kinda annoying.
Any idea what's going on here?

i set mine through zedge... i was gettin the defualt rings if i would setup the ring through sound~
... it is odd....but works now... . like i said..set through zedge..workd for me
I set mine through handcent, because it allows the usage of custom ringtones, and I've never had a problem.
Put it in /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/ instead. Give that a shot.
I had this happen with my alarm clock. I put an ogg file in system/media and after a few days there were only 3 ringtones to select. I even tried some apps from the market and got the same thing. I've been flashing nightlies on top of eachother so I assumed that caused it.

Ha, I didn't even know that there is a /sdcard equivalent for ringtone storage. I'll give that a shot.
Although, I am a little concerned about "ring lag", but curious enough to find out nonetheless.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
I've had all my ringtones reset various times when flashing CM7 nightlies (granted i'm on a NS4G now)... but still happening... which is a huge PITA when I have custom ringtones for many of my contacts. I just found an app on the market that apparently backs up the specific database where these settings are stored.
It's called Backup My Tones (on the market)
I didnt find anything so Im going to make a new thread. On Lollipop I simply renamed all files, rebooted and camera was silent. After updating renaming changes nothing for me. Is there a solution for that on MM?

Just to give your post a bump: I too would like to know this. Renaming camera-click.ogg and some other files used to do the trick, but now this shutter sound seems unrelated to the files in media/ui. Very strange...

Yes its annoying as even turn of ringing volume to zero is bugged for me, if I record a video it starts silent but stipping the video again plays the sound. But it seems we are the only ones annoyed by this

I've also come across the option to edit build.prop and change ro.camera.sound.forced or some other such line from true to false. However, in MM I can't find a line even remotely like that.
And finally I came along a recent post of someone who had silenced a few ogg-files. But no, even that doesn't work. So I've gone back to Snap Camera, which has a simple option to silence the shutter.
I love my new Pixel 2 XL but despite my best efforts to identify what app or system service was sending repeated (and annoying) default notification sounds but not showing any other message or indication, I finally hit on a solution that seems to work.
SET THE DEFAULT NOTIFICATION SOUND TO "NONE"
settings>sound>advanced>default notification sound
Then set the notification sounds to whatever you want for each app you actually care to hear from.

I have noticed this as well.
<notification sound> no new text or email...
For me, it's just easier to ignore the errant tone once in a while than to set notifications for individual apps (cause I'm totally lazy like that).
But THAT is the beauty of Android... to each their own and there are always multiple ways to skin that cat
Use a notification log
I had this same issue. Turned out to be an app I had disabled pop ups for.
I have a (potentially) better solution. Add a notification log widget to find the culprit:
1. Long press on home screen and go to widgets.
2. Drag the settings widget to the home screen.
3. In the list of options, choose Notifications
Now you can see a log of your notifications. Next time you get the sound but no pop up, go into the log and find the offender at the top of the list.
For me it was a game I didn't need so I deleted it, but you can remedy the problem as you see fit.

Glad you found it! Sorry I just saw this. I forget where I learned about this, but it wasn't easy to find. I'm glad I could pass it on to someone else, I'm sure it could be plenty useful.
I'm having the same issue but it's not even showing in the notification log. Makes me want to throw it out the window to be honest. There's time where it will go off every 30 seconds. Off to reset I guess and see if that works.
same thing here pixel 2 oreo 8.1 notification sound...no thing new in the "hot list" or email or message
very weird, and randomly at night too which is the suck
2019 and no change
Hello, same issue still persists in 2019. Every few weeks i must dump the default sound as it sets it self up again.
Still no idea why it does it, just a temp bandaid to curb the annoyance. I notice a slightly higher battery drain too, tells me something is running

Sounds like a re-install is in order...if you have an unlocked bootloader, when was the last time you've done an update via Full Factory image? I'd imagine all that might be sorted out by reinstall/updating; with the "-w" removed of course...
I hope you consider it, and I hope this helps...
During voice calls I get no audio through the top speaker (people can hear me fine however so it's not a microphone issue). When I switch to speaker phone I at least get audio from the bottom speaker so I can use the phone. However, playing music or any video content both speakers work fine. I factory reset the phone and it worked fine for a few hours, then quit. Booted the phone in safe mode, didn't work. Factory reset and didn't install ANY apps, didnt even link a gmail to it, didn't work.
This will be my 3rd device (2nd replacement through verizon and the original) that have all had the same problem. I would say it's an app issue, but when it still doesn't work in safe mode, or before installing any apps....
Verizon is clueless and just keeps telling me they'll send me a new device. Any ideas?

Ha, yeah the reps will just say to factory reset which won't help. The setting is backed up with Google account and restored once set up again. I actually started a thread about this problem a week or two ago....

Do not even know where to find these information. moreover the top speaker is completely off, do you believe that is a matter of tuning.
For sure the device need also a better tuning since the top speaker is less lowed than the bottom one.

You need your phone rooted & File explorer, you just open the app & copy /system to sdcard, pack it up & send to me. Or if you're unrooted, then FX file explorer can copy /system partition to sdcard (doesen't matter if it's internal, or external one) without root.
If you do that - i can take a look at system files & libs in order to know what's possible. Maybe it's also possible to force earpiece to reproduce music stream via mixer patch. Anyways, i'll better know if anything is possible only when i look through the files. The reason why i'm asking is because i've tried all img unpackers that i know, but they crash when i try to unpack any Oreo firmware img, for whatever reason.
Hello, i have made an App for this Problem. I have two Pixel 2 XL since 1 week and when i got my first call i hear, that the ringtone was very quiet.

I don't have the device
Toggle off hearing aid setting
I ran into the same problem when I first setup my Pixel 2 XL and here is how I determined what caused it.
Verizon test calls are #832.
1) I tested the phone when I first got it without holding up to my ear, that has hearing aids, and the top speaker and both speakers worked fine.
2) I tested the phone #832 and held it up to my ear, the top speaker did not work, but when I put it on speaker mode, I can hear.
The way to fix is hit the phone application as if you are going to make a call, hit the three ellipse on the upper right side, this is a menu (3 dots) > Settings > Accessibility > Toggle off Hearing Aid.
I am a combat veteran, so I have two Resound Revision hearing aids to help me hear, these through a small 2.5 GH signature that caused the Pixel to automatically Toggle On the Hearing Aid feature.
I hope this solution works out for you.

My initial attempts failed because I was looking in the main system accessibility settings. When I finally went into the phone app and then clicked the 3-dots and selected settings, I was able to select that accessibility menu which contained the Hearing aids option. Turning that option off restored the top speaker phone function. Still no idea of how that option got set . . .
Thanks!

Hi.
When I set my own notifications for applications like WhatsApp, email, messages, calendar, everything works normally. However, after the phone is restarted, the notifications do not work, there is silence without sound. However, if I leave the default notification sounds set, they will work after the restart. For contacts where I have set my own ringtone, everything is fine after the restart. Not sure what it might be that your own notifications won't work after a restart?
Thanks.
Nobody help?
Internal system notification sounds work even after reboot. Unfortunately, custom sounds do not work after a reboot, only vibration.
Nobody nothing? :-(
Settings / Apps /
App Manager / search for Sounds app (com.android.soundpicker) then force colse it and clear cache and data.
Then reapply your custom ringtone

I can not find it. The sound app (com.android.soundpicker) is not in system !
My friend has the same POCO F3 phone and also has no soundpicker in the applications.
Also having this bug but not with all app which have custom sound notification.
Using EU.dev A12 rom, but also has this issue with EU.dev A11.
Its very annoying but couldn't find solution.
Tried to convert my sound's from mp3 to mp4, ogg but didn't help.

I also tried converting my MP3 to OGG and it didn't help. But when I don't restart the phone, my own sounds work normally in (WhatsApp, Sms, Email). Only after the restart do they stop working when the notification comes, it just vibrates for me, but without the sound. It's weird, as if something didn't activate or dont save somewhere after the restart.
Anyone have any ideas?
So I finally found com.android.soundpicker. I have it called sounds.
But after deleting all the data from the application sounds (soundpicker) no change.
The problem still persists - after restarting the phone, only vibration without sound for notifications. I'm helpless.
So I finally solved the problem myself.
I created a Magisk module that allows me to write to the system.
I copied my own notification sounds to the system media folder, and after restarting the phone, the notification sound works.
