Hey all,
I've been running AOSP PHH Treble for a while on my phone, but it's definitely time for an update.
I've looked at the list of supported ROMS and their respective threads, but it's hard to tell what differentiates them.
So far I've been running without any google play services at all, but GPS and battery life makes me want to try microG.
I have also come to realise that AOSP doesn't come with any OTA updates, which is a pity.
Are all ROMS compatible with microG, or do some come with Google Play Services? Hard to tell from their threads.
Do any ROMS offer OTA updates? Again hard to tell. Do you always have to reflash for every update?
Those are my main criteria. I'm fine with a fairly minimal ROM. The only small thing I miss from my stock ROM is the automatic screen wake. (can't even remember how it worked, acceleration? Infrared?)

I have had my HTC One X for a while after I ditched my Sony Xperia Acro S.
I currently love the phone but is it worth it to upgrade to CyanogenMod (10)?
Or should I just wait for the official JB Update.
The reason why I am asking this question is because I have heard that when you root your phone and install a custom ROM, HTC would refuse to give OTA to those certain phones that were rooted/flashed. Is this true? or can I just root/flash without worry?
Just wanted to hear some thoughts.
Foot Note:
I know the JB update isn't out yet so we can't review it and the leaked ones aren't official but I'm just curious if its worth upgrading the CM 10.
OTA is a patch, so it can't be applied to a different ROM.
If you restore your original ROM, you will be able to receive updates. If you restore original recovery, you can install the update.

Thanks for your reply. That was a typo error. I meant to say phones that were formerly rooted or flashed were not allowed to receive OTAs anymore for the stock rom but anyway, thank you.

Depends really just on you. But if you are unlocked already. You can try it out and revert back as Ben said.
If you hate Sense as me, and like CM, CM10 can be your choice.
I have only few issues with CM10 but wont switch back to Stock despite them.
The issues I am still facing is:
1. flickering, despite different kernels, stock rom has this figured out better
2. WiFi also stock ROM much better, on CM it wont switch in my network to a better AP no matter what I do....
But thats about it it has many benefits for me. Some of them, that come to top of my head.
1. DPI Change to 240 and I wont have tweak the notification bar (also it has the nice color change on connect to google + percentage)
2. Updates, I love nightlies
3. Fast but so fast... no unnecessary crap
4. Multitasking much better as on Stock where its non existing
I love CM/AOKP (and all the builds based upon), but due to HTC's laziness and closed nature, the 'best & latest' drivers for the One X will always be with Sense. That is in respect to the latest kernel, camera framework, beats & audio drivers. Yeah sure HTC release their kernel sources eventually, but usually by the time they have a new kernel from them is out. I dread to think about when the community will get the 3.1 sources.
The camera is the biggest loss for me, the Sense camera, especially with the JB camera build is just far better than any CM/AOKP camera or Play Store app I've tried. To even come close we really need someone to take the camera out of CM/AOKP (or create a new app) and modify/update it solely for the One X.
When running Sense I really miss proper density settings (Sense crashes on density lower than 300), and with most ROMs I have to spend time de-bloating.
With all the hardware issues I've had with my One X at the start, HTC's retarded bootloader warranty policy, and other general unhappiness, I'm going with a Google phone next time - Best community support and openness. 3rd parties seem to only care about pushing their own software, most of which is just bad compared to AOSP. Then don't get me started on contract branded handsets, I don't know how people on here can handle getting updates soo late.
I prefer cyanogenmod ben it is true that SENSE bring many interesting feature ! :good:
I like the AOSP/CM10 look of Android, but there are issues that annoyed me and forced me to go back to sense roms. Flickering, Wifi, Battery and the most important one was Camera.
Now usually I get a sense rom and de-sense it.

HTC Wouldn't do that! They provided the ways to get root, so in a sort of way they support it.
Cyan Delta App
As an aside, if you switch to Cyanogenmod 10 you can use the Cyan Delta app from the Play Store. This is brilliant if you like the nightlies as it only downloads the actual changes and not the full rom.
This app really makes life easy if you like flashing a rom daily. Saves repeatedly loading all your apps and settings, etc.
Just a thought!!
Regarding your question, I was going to wait for the official OTA Jelly Bean update, but got sick of waiting. For what it's worth, my highest benchmark on Antutu with CM10 is 12686 though when you go to submit it says 12706. (I'm unsure why Antutu gives you one score then adds a bit on?). Highest score on ICS stock Rom 12486 preliminary and 12518 final.
Cheers,
Dave
Hello,
A friend sold me his M8 phone and I have managed to unlock and install the latest twrp on the device, obviously I am still s-on but as I am currently on the latest baseband I won't really need s-off as the moment.
There are so many roms for this phone, but what I am after is a stable rom with good battery, and a stable camera app.
I am currently running the last Leedroid rom, and while it is a nice rom is does seem to get a bit laggy at times with the occasional FC.
I am not bothered whether it is Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat, Sense 6,7,8, GPE, aosp, CM, or whatever, as long as the rom is stable, no FCs, good battery etc,
Sorry to ask for recommendations, I know this kind of topic is frowned upon. But there are so many roms, it would take me forever to flash and try them all.
Thank you,

Your request is so vague, as to have no true answer. You literally ask for recommendation for a ROM, and say it can be practically any Android version (just not Kitkat), Sense, GPE or AOSP.
Asking for a ROM that is stable, no FCs, and good battery doesn't narrow it down. It's not like there are folks asking for unstable ROMs with FCs and bad battery. And things like FC and battery are completely subjective. They depend on how you as an individual use the phone (apps, settings, your network, etc.). Just because someone else gets no FC and good battery, doesn't mean your experience will be the same.
ROM recommendations are allowed (they didn't used to be - but the rule was changed). However, there are already plenty of other threads where folks have chimed in on what their favorites are. The most comprehensive such thread is probably this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/currently-best-rom-htc-m8-based-6-0-cm13-t3442924
The thread title specifies CM13, but the discussion has actually moved far beyond that. Probably would suggest starting from the end of the thread (most recent posts) and work your way back, as the thread started almost a year ago.
Got me a Z5p E6853 over a year ago.
Stock rom is ok, a bit laggy but runs well enough. over time it gets stale and I looked around for Custom roms.
Tried a few, mainly the AOSP roms on this Forum and the Z5 fourm. found some bug or another that didn't sit well with me. custom stock roms causes a display failure on my device for some reason at random times, sometimes more than once a day, others will run for weeks without a problem. happens at the oddest times too so no way to pin down the cause. (plus all the devs from those roms have moved on so little point in requesting help for them)
So my main question is. other than going back to full stock. (with the possibility of xposed in the future) - What are the current best roms for function and Camera.
Stock roms take advantange of the DRM keys saved on your device. AOSP roms don't from what I can understand. is there a Lineage or AOSP type rom that has a better camera than stock?
what have the users here experienced to be their best combination of rom, with long term stability / Camera quality being top priority.
I don't normally ask Questions here, I usually lurk and help people with problems with flashing and such. but my current experiece with the Z5p has been a bit poor. and I would like to use this phone to its full potential. I just don't see that yet with whats currently available. I may have missed an old rom, or some patch fix that someone mentioned somewhere, but i've been reading the threads for the past few months looking for something that stands out.
I feel like I've bought into a dud of a phone. and my only real option is to just go back to normal stock and pass the phone onto a relative and buy a better phone.
Hey there. I used to have an HTC One M9 (I now have the Z5 Premium (E6853))and the best decision I've ever made with that phone is to keep the stock rom, but root it (preferably with magisk). For me this had the best stability with all the perks of rooting it as you could still flash kernels, and use the millions of root apps that boost your phone and clean out bloatware. Maybe just do some exploring into apps that'll completely change the behaviour of your phone, rather than the OS. What I have found in my rom flashing addict days is that the ROMs themselves really only change a couple of things and device performance is never one of them. If you're looking for massive customisation options a custom rom can help, but you should also check out Substratum. I hope it all goes well!
P.S. - I find Lineage OS is probably the most stable custom rom out there but who knows every custom rom can be a real hit and/or miss.

Hello all,
I may get teased a little bit for this one - but I am a bit of a traditionalist. Even as an IT guy, I tend to shy away from custom, enhanced or otherwise modified ISOs of windows. Not because I am afraid of them... I just like the "stock" look. I would like to stick to the same thing on my phone.
I am still running the stock version of my ATT firmware, 4.x.x. I like it just fine, and it suits my needs for the most part - (Other than the ATT bloatware that crashes constantly for several minutes upon reboot)
However, my device is beginning to slow down and I find myself using Chrome more and more because the older stock browser does not seem to want to render some sites very well. I expect it is only a matter of time before I start running into "sorry, you cannot run this app" type of issues.
So on to my questions....
1. Will upgrading to 6.x or 7.x improve the performance on my device?
2. If so, I see there are a ton of apps to choose from. Is there one specifically that is "less modified" or at least enables some sort of "gotta-have-it" functionality?
3. Can you elaborate on why you chose to move from the stock rom? I understand there are alot of "testers" on this forum who like to play with things. However, my phone is used heavily for work purposes. Simplicity and Stability remain key drivers for me.
Changing to a custom ROM may improve some areas of performance while decreasing in others such as battery life, camera, and stability.
By apps, I assume you mean roms. I can't make any recommendations as I have not had a note 2 for a few years but I have found that custom ROMs based off a stock rom are pretty stable. I always like to start with a very bare-bones ROM and add functionality via apps as needed.
I have moved to custom ROMs in the past when apps won't run on the phone's stock rom.
I've run my note 2 on DN3 for a number of years. You can still find a link to the thread in this forum and you will need to root your n2.
Not hard. 1 advantage is you can remove the bloat and it's still a rom that runs well on our device since it was built for our device in it's prime.
If you have any questions send a PM. Happy to help.

Hello guys. I know its a veryyyyyyy relative question. But I would like to know wich is the best rom available for our device. It would be nice if you could describe why do you think is the best rom (is it because of the stability, performance, battery backup, optimizations, features, etc).
Thanks in advance!
I tried two:
1. AOSP 9 XDA
2. LOS16 XDA
I really like the LOS16 due to the variety of customization available and the black theme settings. The privacy settings are great, especially if you are like me where I use my Z Play with no Google or Gapps. The development has ended in spring, last update was in May with April Android security patch. I will still use it cause I don't do much on my phone, texting-browsing-reddit so it should be secure for that. If I was doing banking, emailing and being a more important person (CEO), I would not use an outdated device such as the Z Play.
As for #2: my wife's Z Play is on that. Great, clean stock Android. Just installed the most basic gapps for play services, that's it. My wife is only using a few apps and that ROM development is ending in August, last update has come through. There is another rom, experience rom which I never tried but I might because it looks good and similar to LOS16.
Good luck!
I've tried aosp, lineage and xperience, at least two months each. The problems are photo quality and battery drain. I used several camera softwares, including gcam, but the quality is not that good, long time to focus, blured pics. Xperience also takes a long time to sync gps when you use gmaps. I am a custom rom enthusiast, but the best choice was to come back to stock rom (oreo)... stability, excellent photos, prompt gps, and battery.
