App closes in background Android 8.1 - LineageOS Questions & Answers

Hi,
I'm using Lineage OS on a moto g5 that is rooted.
Basically my android phone keeps refreshing apps in the background everytime they are minimised.
I've tried turning off battery optimisation but nothing changes.
I upgraded recently from android 8 to 8.1 and it worked fine before but now I don't know what to do.
Is there any rooted solution for this that I can install to fix it? It's kind of important that it runs some of the apps at least in the background. Would making the app a system app help?
Thanks in advance!

Having an active notification for that app should help

Sorry, how would I do that?

[Q] [B506] Background apps get closed and can't receive notifications

Hi all,
Has anyone experienced this with B506? Some apps like Telegram or WeChat get closed in the background just after a few seconds and then if someone messages me I don't receive the notification until I actually open the app (which completely defeats the purpose of the notification...).
Is this just a problem with my phone or has anyone else experienced this?
I know it's the app that's getting somehow closed because every time I start for example, Facebook or WeChat, I see the splash screen (which is only shown the first time an app is started).
Thanks for any help!
Are you allowing it to run in the background, and allowing it to startup at boot?

That's the thing, ever since I flashed B506 I lost that setting in the menu where we had the security options and could choose what runs in the background and what doesn't... I thought this was removed by Huawei on purpose. Do you still have it?

Yes, I still have it, and you should too.
Do you have the Phone Manager app? All the options are there.
In settings, Protected apps is the setting for the background apps.

Ugh, I'm so stupid! I froze the Phone Manager app (as well as a bunch of other Huawei apps) without realizing this one is actually needed.
Thanks! It works now!

[Q] process com.asus services has stopped

I get this twice every time I boot the phone. I'm running the latest firmware. Rooted via the previous pre-rooted image. Seems to happen when I freeze any system app in Titanium. Even if it's something that seems minor, like Clock. On that note, I'd recommend the stock clock over the ASUS one, even if just for the ability to dismiss future alarms.
Unrelated, but does the Xposed module 'App Settings' work for anyone? The DPI/font scale/resolution changes don't do anything for me.
I can't wait for this bootloader to get unlocked so we can get some 64-bit AOSP/stock ROM on this phone.
AOSP for Zenfone 2 needed badly !
This is a great phone but the only negative is too much bloatware.
I wish we had some AOSP 64-bit ROM for Zenfone 2.
Any idea how to build it ?

64 bit kernel might be a problem to build for a given ROM

I used to have this problem after the last update. Specially after boot this message would come twice and every time i open power saver it crashes. Deleting the data solved the problem. Now i know any disabled system app will cause this. Thanks man.
+1 Clearing Dalvik and app cache fixed my issue. :good: This can also stem from disabling core Asus or Android services/apps and that is what you did.
Wakelock blockers apps can also cause this and may even cause random reboots or freezing if core wakelocks are blocked. Other wakelocks are required to receive instant calls/texts and sync emails/time/etc too.
You should never disable clock, as other xda users pointed out, removing the clock app will in addition cause issues with the power saving app.
Do you know that there is a forum search button on your right? Anyway, here is how to easily change DPI, Resolution etc without root on the fly with a single command in adb or terminal that survives reboots.

Whats not working with Asus Clock app? I use it for timing, alarms and international clocks, it works fine.
Asus rep stated in xda forums that they are working on a fully x64 Android OS. Currently, only the Kernel is x64.

Delayed Whatsapp notifications

Hi guys i just installed Crdroid pie rom, is a nice rom i really like the customization, the problem is that my notifications for Whatsapp are delayed, don't really know if it is the same for other apps. I got the doze for google play sevices module for magisk, i removed greenify because i thought this app was messing with this, i removed whatsapp from battery optimization, but nothing works. To clarify, i had all this configuration on Leedroid rom and never got this problem. Any idea on how to solve this?
Thanks

You would probably get better assistance from the Crdroid ROM thread. Asking here you would need someone who has that ROM to help. You will have better luck with that on the Crdroid thread

Did you by any chance restore a whatsapp backup from Titanium Backup? I know when I did that, I would miss tons of notifications and had reinstall whatsapp and restore chats via the app's own backup and restore function.

No, i just installed from play store and didn't did the backup from the app. Now i did a hard reset but i think that the problem still there, this time i didn't install any mods or change any config.
Is so annoying, the messages are delayed to 5 or more minutes, and sometimes they doesn't show until i open whatsapp.
I've seen this app as optimized in the battery configs: com.google.android.gms.setup
Sorry guys but im such a noob

Sounds like maybe you don't have the app set to allow background data usage..?
I don't use the app myself, but that's what I would check.
Go to*Settings > (may be under network and internet)Tap Data Usage > Tap Mobile data usage > Select WhatsApp*> Tap Background data to enable if unchecked*(path may vary slightly depending on OS version and rom)

i tried it before but don't change anything. I looked on stanby apps on developer options and whatsapp appear like "EXEMPTED" other apps like the messaging one appear like "ACTIVE". In background check whatsapp doesn't show, would it has to show the app or maybe change the stanby status to ACTIVE? Thanks guys

I've trying a lot of things, and i get to the conclution that is there's no problem with battery optimization because i disable Doze by adb and the messages still delayed. I think is ram managment, a very aggressive behavior of it, whatsapp just don't work in background, gets killed by system just a few minutes after being open don't know if it is caused by the rom or by pie. Gonna try another pie rom to see if that solves my problem, if not, i'm gonna have to back to oreo

How to prevent Android from killing apps?

So, I have this issue, where most of my apps can't stay in recent apps overnight. They all get killed, all but 5 I have noticed. I did the battery optimization thing for all apps I use on a daily basis. I have edited build.prop file and added sys.keep_app_1=com.whatsapp and so on for the rest of my apps. I also did that in the local.prop file. None of it worked. How to prevent my phone from killing apps overnight?

If you are rooted you might try the app LSpeed and use one of the build in RAM profiles.
I am rooted. OK, I will try it. Thanks. It shuts my app very VERY aggressively. For instance, I was watching some youtube video yesterday, and in the other app I was searching for some products and was going back and forth between YouTube and Google Chrome, and every couple of times it restarted YouTube app, even though I was using it 2 minutes ago.

Both youtube and chrome are resource hungry apps, that's why it keeps reloading.
I guess your device is 3 gb version as mine.

I have the 4 gb version as well and I don't face such an issue, if nothing works try factory reset, absolute solution :good:
Tried it already, didn't work. Try leaving 10-15 apps opened in the evening, and see in the morning if they are still in recent apps. And tell me tomorrow.

Well, then you probably need a custom rom. Android One is known to be optimized for dumping non needed tasks. You could try to disable battery optimizing for the apps you would like to stay alive.
Tried that too, didn't work.
My previous phone was 2Gb running android 6. Now i have a mi a2 life 4Gb and it is OK except for 2 games.
Apparently there's some AI that learns what you use but after many weeks no change.
Most apps open pretty fast. It's only these 2 games that I run daily. Annoying to have to wait for them especially since the old phone was able to keep them cached.
I tried the low-memory config (magisk module) but it didn't help. I guess android has changed its algorithm. I'm resigned to it.
It's insane. What's the point of having 4, 6, 8 or 10GB of ram if you can't use it?!
Connect it to a monitor, install Taskbar app and SecondScreen app, enable Freeform windows and turn your phone into a mediocre PC. Assuming you can get all the resources back from OS's hidden service threads of course.
Facing the same issue
facing same issue specially after android 10 update. Change apps back and forth even in recent apps menu kills the app. My phone is 4/64.

Android 10 has a known problem. Rebooting helps. For how long seems to vary. I get a week or so, some people only get a day.
I had the same problem when I was unrooted during the Android 10 update crash. After rooting and installing Lspeed again, Android is not killing apps anymore as I set these settings

Banking app crashes on RR

Hi, all -
I have a G7 Play (xt 1952-4) running Resurrection Remix 8.7.2.
When I use my banking app to cash a check, the banking app crashes immediately after taking the first picture. The screen goes black for a few seconds, then I am returned to the login screen.
I have another xt 1952-4 running stock android. The app works fine on there, no problem cashing checks.
I got the .apk for my RR phone from the stock android phone by using MyAppSharer from the play store and then bluetoothing the .apk to the RR phone.
Other than the crash described above, I have found no issues with the app on the RR phone.
Any ideas what I can do to resolve this? I'd go to my bank and ask them to fix the app, but I don't think they'll care about supporting a phone with a custom ROM on it...
Thanks much for any input!
Hey, all -
Just reaching out again to see if anyone has any words of wisdom on this.
Thanks!
