Subtle purple edge tint in very low light? (S20+) - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Questions &

Anybody else noticing an extremely subtle light purple-ish haze on the edges of extremely low light photos - i.e. where the dark/black areas are in a low light photo around the edges?
It's subtle. It's a reach to see it at times. But this is an expensive phone, so I'm going to nitpick... It reminds me of the old issues with the HTC One M7 and some older Motorola devices, though on a much more subtle level. I'm probably crazy, but I know I'm seeing it at times.
Snapdragon S20+ here (Verizon variant)

Ok, so I realize it would've helped my first post with some photos and additional info. Please keep in mind, I love the camera on this phone 90% of the time, but this 10% is an issue that reminds me of the old days (per my first post). I have two sets of photos... First are the originals, uploaded, and added into Photoshop with a black "frame" to help you see the haze better. The second set is a photo from my iPhone of what those photos look like on my S20's screen. Reality lies somewhere in between the two. The second set over-emphasizes more than what I see on the screen, and the first set mutes it too much. These photos are night mode photos, which I realized after my first post helps to accentuate and show the issue.
Ultimately the problem seems to be how the software and/or sensor are handling the extremes when you have a bright light source as the focal point, and dark outer edges (again, reminiscent of oooold devices). Anyway, the photos are attached. Hopefully that help clarifies it a bit more. It's nitpicky, as there aren't many scenarios where this would come up. But it's a $1k+ phone... I feel like I'm allowed to be nitpicky.

Is it always on the left side of the phone screen? i.e. always on the top of the phone? or does it change to either side when you rotate the phone (could be on the top or bottom sides)? I have not observed this purple thint issue, but your third photo shows that it is extremely bad.

No, it's more pronounced on the left there due to the lighting in that situation. But if you look at the fourth picture you can see it's relatively even on both sides where things start to darken.

I'm not saying it's normal, I too suffered from the HTC M7 syndrome but in those specific photos, is the purple haze coming from a TV light on your left? Is there any tv screen running when you took the pictures?

No - no TV's on anywhere. The purple haze is coming from the especially dark areas.

Just checked on mine s20+ exynos, other than very minor green tint no issues, if i were you i would replace it asap - something isnt right

I bought an unlocked S20 (+ was too large for me anyway) and tested it last night in the exact same spot and exact same scenario, and very little haze at all with no purple. I can see what it's trying to do - it's trying to lighten up those darker areas, but for some reason on that S20+ it was making it purple-ish and just plane ugly. It doesn't look "great" on the regular S20, but it's at least not purple and clearly just trying to lighten it up. S20+ is already on its way back for the return.

Dead Pixels anyone?

So I noticed last night while trying to take a picture in the dark (yeah I know it doesn't work lol) that my screen has close to 75 dead pixels in it. Is this typical of TP2's? None of the three G1's I've gone though had a single dead pixel. In fact, I have not seen a screen with this kind of deadness since the original PSP... Well I'm within my 14 days, so this one is going back to T-Mobile.
I think I may just wait for T-Mo to toss out the HD2, or what ever device they launch that will have the ability to utilize WinMo 7 upon release.
75, tha's a bit much. I have 5 on my tp2 and 2 on my hero. I am probably gonna get the tp2 replaced. They really don't bother me though. I really don't want to get stuck with a refurb
I wish that I had checked my first TP2 for them, but I had to send that one back as the automatic speakerphone didn't work. (Nor did anything that used the rotation sensor, like Need For Speed: Undergroud, obviously sensor version!)
The dead pixels bother me when playing darker games, or looking at darker pics. Also, I just installed a dark theme, and now it looks like there is water dripping down it (in a bad way) lol.
If my next replacement has any more issues, I'm just going to send it back and get out my half broken G1 again. It shouldn't be this hard to do a quality check before shipping.
HTC doesn't recognize dead pixels as something wrong with the unit, except if there's 3 (or more) dead pixels on an area not larger than 1cm^3 (one cubic centimeter). 75 totally is obviously quite alot. ;P
personally i have one dead pixel on my Swedish unbranded TP2, and just one dead pixel isn't really bothering at all, even if it, of course, would've been nicer without it.
What does "taking a picture" and "dead pixels" have to do with each other unless you're talking about the camera itself having dead pixels?
If you want to check the screen for dead pixels find something that displays solid black, white, red, green, blue... There are several "flashlight" programs that do this.

camera lenses cant possibly, not even in a million years, ever have pixels. thats just absurd.

in other words, it was an all black screen when he/she:
1- took the photo in the dark
2- saw the dark photo.
that is when he/she noticed the dead pixels.

Not a big deal...
I read somewhere about an app to correct this dead pixels
Anyone know more about this?

I think we all know what djinfamousflo really means. The exact technical terms were probably not used correctly but the point is, you really can't come to the conclusion that you have dead pixels based on taking a photo in the dark and then looking at that photo. If that were the case, I would have several dead pixels myself. My photo taken in the dark actually has a couple of pale spots.
If you really want to test, you need to fill your screen with black, blue, green, and red. See if each pixel can display each color. Try it with the pics I've attached.

I don't think you can fix a dead pixel (ie, if your screen is suppose to display white, and the pixel is black, then it's pretty much really dead).
But you may be able to wake up a stuck pixel if you have an app that rapidly continuously flashes red, green and blue.
I noticed them when I took a picture in a no light environment, and proceeded to test with my flashlight app. I'm within T-Mobile's 14 days, so I can get this one replaced, I just wanted to make sure this wasn't a wide spread issue.
Thanks for posts guys
How easy is it to spot a single dead pixel? Does it glare out at you and taunt you everyday, or is it something you rarely notice?
I assume "dead" means it doesn't display anything and "stuck" means it only displays 1 color always.

It's pretty easy to spot if you splash the screen with red, green, blue, and white. Your "dead" and "stuck" definitions are spot on...

Try this. But I couldn't get it to run full screen, so if your stuck pixel is on the top or bottom bars, then it won't work. You can however, slide out your keyboard and force the app to run landscape to cover more ground. But you're out of luck if your stuck pixel is in the corners.

Okay.... So I obviously did not say a lens.
Second, taking pictures in the dark and checking for "dead pixels" is complete and utter nonsense. Flat out nonsense. Again, the ONLY thing that could POSSIBLY find is hot pixels in the camera sensor.

Yes, yes you can. In a low to zero light environment they show up just fine. Camera's don't have pixels. And the camera sensors are digital. They don't work like a screen. Thus when you power on your camera and go into a bathroom you will indeed see DEAD/STUCK pixels. (Assuming your device has any) AND I USED A FLASHLIGHT APP AFTER TO VERIFY. There is a significant difference between a dead pixel, and super low light pixilation that occurs from the CMOS sensor (That's what the camera uses to take a picture.) attempting to raise the light level.
Please if you don't have anything constructive to add, don't add anything at all.
I sent TP2 back for replacement today, and will try out number three. If the third one has issues, well I'll be going back to my G1 personally.
Oh yes - And I never TOOK a picture to find them, I simply noticed this while trying to take a night shot of some pumpkins, thus making the entire screen black. Now if I then took a picture and looked at it, it would show nothing, as the CMOS doesn't have dead pixels. I just NOTICED the dead ones while the screen was all black IN the camera APP.
Maybe that makes it clearer?

I bolded your statement that you really should stick to, although perhaps you should replace "constructive" with "useful".
If you have dead pixels by viewing with a app that shows solid colors, you have stuck pixels. Using the camera in a dark room is not the way to find them.
And digital cameras don't have pixels?? The Tilt 2 has a 3.2MP camera. You can interpolate from there.
To revive a somewhat stagnant thread... if I take pictures on my TP2, there is one all-white pixel that shows up in every picture. Funny thing is it shows only when viewing previously taken pictures, it does not show up in the viewfinder before clicking the shutter.
And no, it's not a dead screen pixel... as I can zoom in on it and move it around.
So looks like a dead CMOS pixel.

View it on your computer; does it still show? Same place every time, again on the PC.
if its on a picture and not permanently on the screen, its not a dead pixel, its noise on the photo. web cams are notorious for little stray off color pixels. i dont think a camera phone is a proper replacement for a real camera. dead pixel and stuck pixel are the same thing. normally flashing black and white on the screen really fast will fix them but thats more for computer monitors. dunno how that would refer to a phone because ive only seen an iphone that had dead pixels, never on any other. if it really bugs you, it is a warranty issue and you can get your phone replaced.

Screen tint

The screen on my 8.4in Tab S is bugging me, is it just me?
With all "super enhanced" colour settings set to plain and boring colour, I keep noticing a slight green tint in the central area of screen when viewed square-on, it's very subtle and seems more obvious with text on the screen, e.g. the Tapatalk forum listings. Also when viewed from an angle the display takes on a slight blue tint, despite reviews saying how good the angles are, it seems worse than the LG G Pad.
Is this just a feature of AMOLED displays or could it be a faulty unit (how?)?
I don't see it. Sorry.

There shouldn't be any differences viewed at any angle with this screen. Try this... in bright sunlight, with the screen off, look at the screen on an angle. It should look a uniform color - actually almost exactly matching the titanium bronze bezel... just to make sure there is no physical defect.
Something to note - if the screen is OK, it could be your eyes (not joking). The eyes can play many tricks - for example, seeing a lightly shaded box with text on a piece of paper that is only black and white - the box can appear to be shaded slightly red. That's one example, but there are many. And with the resolution and technology of this screen, there are no imperfections to draw your attention, like staircasing, blur, backlight irregularities, that you are used to seeing. It is a bit confusing to our physiology, and our brain does this thing called "patternization" that can contribute to us truly seeing something other than it is. This seems to be more subtle, yet more frustrating on a display that is so close to perfect.
I'm not saying that there is something with your eyes specifically. It could certainly be a defective screen. One way to find out would be to take a look at someone else's - also, if you have another decent camera, you can take a picture of the screen and look at the picture - that will usually confirm (or not) whether what you are seeing is there. Like I said, it's not you or your eyes I'm dissing. These are things I've picked up on over the years. In fact, it could ONLY be my eyes. If that's the case, I'd probably rather not know.
You can also use a colorimeter and software like HFCR to get the discreet measurements from different parts of the screen. When I have done this, I've found that there was no real difference in chromacity. Of course, that has always made me walk away thinking that the colorimeter must not be accurate. So human.
I would definitely be interested in your feedback about what you find because I've obsessed over high resolution displays trying to figure out what is real and what I'm imagining... it's an active area of interest for me.

Yes I have also noticed this. I've seen these green or pink tints on all the amoled devices I've owned. You need pretty good eyesight to be able to notice it. You shouldn't be bothered by it, they're all like that, if you can see it. But you'll get used to it.

Thanks Freshman206 and SrAdama, glad (?) to hear that it's not just me, I've had the tablet just over a week and still notice it. Any slight tilt and the colours appear/shift, green, pink and when angled beyond what I'd consider normal, blue.
Have photographed it and will have another go at getting it clearer but by winding up saturation the effect becomes visible in the photos (on pc).
I'm now trying to decide what to do about it, I have an LG G Pad which doesn't annoy in this way, though it has just gone away for a warranty screen repair for bright spots (not stuck pixels)!

It is probably the antiglare coating you are seeing.. If you have the coating on your glasses and check them out, it will do the same thing as your tablet... I also noticed it appears to have a anti fingerprint coating on as well, very nice indeed :>
In shops I also have compared 3 different Tab S.
All had an immediately visible green tint, white looks not white but greenish and a bit "washed out".
I find it a bit surprising that with other devices, when they have a tint (like the yellow tint of the Xperia Tablet Z), people complain much, while here, with this really apparent tint, people tend to say: It's normal, get used to it...
I would never buy a Tab S, just because of this tint and because of the, compared to other devices, low maximal brightness.
These devices are overrated.
I ran a poll in this forum as to whether people were satisfied with white reproduction on their tablets or not. Out of 15 responses 12 were satisfied.
We have heard reports of manufacturing defects such as yellows screens, muddy splotches in the middle of screens, loose creeky backs, warped backs and excessive lag/stutter.
These are not "normal" for this tablet but represent what may be a bad run of tablets that made it out of the barn. If you are experiencing the issues suffered by the OP, I suggest you seek a replacement unit. If you have observed similar performance from other tabs in the same store that would make sense as they are likely from the same faulty production run.
When operating normally, white should be white on the Tab S. For myself and the large majority in the poll, this is the case. I have also not read any reviews by professionals mentioning this discoloration and believe me, if CNET or THEVERGE had something to rag on the Tab S about they would have.

I just took a picture of a webpage with a white background on my 10.5 and sent it to my laptop which has software that measures colors.
The website background from my Tab S 10.5 measured at 255:255:255. That is pure white. This was a photo and not merely a screen shot.
Saw the 10.5 inch and 8.4 inch models together on display in a shop. The 8.4 inch version also had slightly yellow tinted whites when looked at directly, not as bad as I was expecting though. The 10.5 inch model had no yellow tinted whites at all, when looked at directly or tilted.
Mine has pinkish tint at the top visible when everything is white especialy when reading wikipedia

Yes the Basic profile is meant to be that way its not the screen problem being discussed here, if you wanted an accurate image then Basic is the closest of all the profiles. If Basic looks washed out to you then your used to looking at an oversaturate screen, if you were used to looking at calibrated screens then all three profiles would look over saturated.
I had the 8.4 and just returned it. I also had the greenish-blue tint when the screen was even just slightly tilted. More noticeable indoors with brightness set to below 40%. If I had the tablet flat on the table and walked across the room, I could see it too - screen only looked good if looking at it directly in front of you. As others have said, I think it's probably due to some coating on the screen, which explains why it would be more noticeable with the screen brightness set lower.
I've checked out a few display models at stores, they all basically look the same, though some were slightly worse than others. That being said, the 10.5" ones I saw don't seem to have this problem... if they do, it's definitely not as noticeable. Not sure if it's just an optical illusion or what, but the 10.5's look OK. I'm going to go buy the 10.5 one today, mainly for the size. I'll post again if there are any tints on the screen.

The problem was a green tint in the center when looked at head on not at an angle, seeing shifts in color when tilted is normal for this tablet. I would have kept yours if it was fine straight on.
My 10.5 had greenish yellow tint when looked at head on exactly the same as the op.

I was gonna return for the 10.5" anyways, the screen tint wasn't part of that decision, but I certainly won't miss it, heh.
Mine it is extremelly yellow! I hate this bug... It happends to me every 10 minutes, i need to restart every time to revert this.

[Q] Pink tint on lower half of screen? Normal?

Hey everyone,
I got my black AT&T Note 4 earlier today. I noticed the lower half of the screen is slightly darker, and has a slight pinkish tint on a white screen.
I do notice it in some apps, like Kindle when readinga book. Top of screen is slightly brighter, and when background is white there's a very slight pink tint.
Is that normal? Or should brightness be uniform and no tint?
EDIT: I added a photo. It's not a good photo but you can see how one side is tinted differently. In the photo the brighter top looks greenish but in real life it's not green. You can also the slight pinkish tint in the bottom half, which is the left side of the photo.
I wouldn't want to comment based on the image you uploaded directly since how a camera captures a digital display is much different than what the naked eye will see. If the picture on the panel is not consistent and appears polarized in any way, I would consider that to be faulty. Get it replaced.
Galaxy Note 4 (pink tint lower screen)
Hi there,
I have also noticed a pink tint on the lower half of the screen on new Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
As i intend to do a lot of drawing on this device the tint is unacceptable.
I wonder if there is a way to calibrate the display?
I had this issue with my Galaxy S3 display. I had at&t exchange it.
Have this same issue on my Note 4. Posted some pics over in the thread on this topic for the Note 3 before I thought to check here. Basically there's a brightness and gamma gradient from top to bottom. The top half is perfect and the bottom half gradually fades to a point where you lose the first 8-9 squares on the lagom.nl black level test.
This one emphasizes the black crush, which can be visible in video content on a dark screen (and makes dark colored backgrounds fade to black towards the bottom):
And here's one on a white background. At first it seems like a white point issue (which I would tolerate since it's common on IPS as well), but it's a brightness gradient:
Between this and the fact that AT&T disabled the slider for auto brightness I'm a little frustrated with this supposed best smartphone display ever (I realize this second issue isn't Samsung's fault, but the auto brightness is unusable without that feature). I bought the phone at Best Buy which is mostly out of stock right now so an exchange isn't likely, assuming they even take this seriously as an issue.
My note 4 does not display this issue.
No issues here. Display looks very consistent.

Have you tried a dark background in a dark room? For me it wasn't that obvious until I did this (was messing around in Sketchbook). If the majority of screens are better than mine I'll definitely be trying to get a replacement as this is bothering me.
I just installed Lux to resolve my backlight issue and its settings menu background fades nearly entirely to black at the bottom.
*Edit: So far it sounds like this is an anomaly. You would expect places like Anandtech to report on it if they'd seen that amount of variation. I'm going to have a good time trying to convince someone at BB that this is a real defect though.
Erica Griffin talks about this issue in her Note 4 review, around the 20 min mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OyNWrQJzMY
I got a replacement and it's perfect. No pink tint.
So, if you have the tint return it. Not all Note 4s are like that.

Thanks, that was quite helpful. I think in general it's easier to trust reviews on retail-purchased devices over mainstream reviews with PR department selected units.
I went to BB today and looked at the display units. All perfect, but then that's not surprising (every company gives their display/review units a second QC pass, even Apple). I'll probably head to the only BB in the area that has units tomorrow and see if I can do an exchange. As long as they don't make me sign one of those "no more returns" agreements I've heard about I'm willing to take another shot in the display lottery.

Good to hear! I'll post my results after my exchange attempt tomorrow. Aside from the gradient I am impressed with the display. Not as bright as LCD in daylight, but I was drawing on a black BG last night and noticed that it has deeper blacks than my Pioneer plasma.

Fingers crossed for you to get a nice one like mine.
Yeah, the blacks and colors are amazing on the Note 4. The whites are not as bright as the iPhone 6+, but they are fine and way better than whites on my Note 2. In all other respects the Note 4 screen is overall better than even iPhone 6+'s excellent LCD.
One minor disappointment is the very high resolution has made some emulators dog slow as they attempt to render at full resolution, i.e. PPSSPP and ePSXe using ogle renderer. Hoping the devs find a workaround, maybe rendering at half or quarter rest instead - that would still be higher rest than my Note 2 at full rest.
What's the color of your device? Anyone have this problem in the white version?
my note 4 has pink tint
I have the same problem on my Verizon white note 4 but on top half of display. Replacement should arrive by Friday :/
You can replicate this by looking at the screen at an extreme angle, obviously the ones that see green and purple straight on are screen defects.
I have a white version and whites are perfect and too bright at high setting. I keep mine half way. The whites are better IMHO than the iphones. The colors more vibrant and, the sharpness is ridiculously sharp. I dont see how they can improve it. I only thing there should be a waynto adjust the color saturation, because basic mode doesnt do much on mine.
My Note 4 has the same issue. It almost looks like the while balance differs from top to bottom, but it is really the brightness that is different.
This is a photo of my Note 4 showing a solid colored image at #030303 (very close to black). It shows how different the pixels in the bottom and in the top emit light.
Image can be seen at 1x.com/tmp/uniformity_note4.jpg
Looks like crap.

I though i had ocd with phones but that just doesnt bother me in the slightest. Cant really tell unless you force yourself

similar problem
I have a similar issue, though mine is brighter on the right side than it is on the left. Very noticeable with dark background in lower light situations as someone else mentioned.

Bad "backlight" uniformity?

Hi all,
Had my Pixel for a few days now and noticed what I thought was a new gradient in the background of posts in the XDA labs app, I checked the screen using one of the grey test colours and found that I'm getting a dark cloud over the bottom right hand side of my screen. I tried taking a photo with my old phone (Moto X Pure) but the camera isn't good enough at low light for it to show up, I'll try and get a photo with my DSLR when I'm back from work later today. In the mean time some quick googling has shown it's very similar to the "Dirty Screen Effect" described here: http://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/picture-quality/gray-uniformity-dirty-screen-effect-dse
Had anyone else noticed this? Do you think Google would RMA it? I've not really been bothered by the blue shift on my device so I'm slightly concerned that I might end up with a worse replacement if I do send it back
Cheers
Michael
It's a tough call, you have to ask yourself if you can live with it or not. Does it show up a lot during normal usage? Or is it just with the XDA labs app and similar applications in a low light setting with your brightness turned to like 0-10%? Or if you can see it at all times regardless of brightness settings you can contact Google tell them of the screen issue and get a RMA. Check out the replacement and compare the blue shift to your current and see if it also has the same issue as your current device. If it's better in both regards send it back, if the blue shift is a bit worse on the one and you can tolerate it and it doesn't have the bad back light uniformity you could keep it. That's what I would do personally, best of luck!
Yes, I have a similar issue. My first device had severe blue tint at any angle and Google would not replace so I returned and and reordered. The second device had only slight blue tint and is not an issue but of course has the uneven grays. The right side of the screen is much darker and there is also a dark spot around the sim tray area on the left side. I sent Google pictures and they are sending a replacement. It's only noticable in low light, looks fine at higher brightness though.
Ah I didn't realize they sent you the replacement first. That makes it a much easier decision. I'll still try and add a photo of it in the OP later today but RMA seems like the best choice. It's noticeable at lower backlight brightness and since it's winter here in the UK now the auto-brightness often drops it down to a level where it is noticeable just in normal daily use.
I get a VERY slight hint of that on a dark gray background at 5-7% brightness in a totally dark room but other than that very specific condition it's uniform otherwise.
The photo as promised unedited straight out of the camera (USB C OTG is neat). It's not quite this bad in person, if you imagine the light grey is the same shade as the dark grey in this image and the dark grey as being almost black then you get the idea, but it does show the difference between the two and it is clearly visible with the naked eye in a dark room.
The grey image I'm using is here: https://i1.wp.com/ausdroid.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/screenshot_20171022-153201.png?ssl=1

Screen Problem

Hello, I've noticed that when I use my phone in night mode I can see green areas on the screen. Are there other people in my case?
No on mine so far. Black is black no greenish.
is see this too sometimes esp at night when its dark in the room with no other lights - in the day when its brighter is not visible
it does seem to be an issue with some backgrounds as i noticed in apps where the background is black (not dark grey or greysh) this isnt visible
so not sure whats going on - but i didnt had this issue with the s10 .....

Screen sorry ^^
ok but how do you explain that its only visible sometimes and then sometimes is not?
and is only showing on grey backgrounds etc
like now i have the phone in my hand and is looking ok
the best place to test is in the samsung daily or SMS app - the top part of the app thats meant to be black was sometimes showing more like greyish - now is proper black again?
like i said it seems to be dependent on the ambient light - i wouldnt want to replace the phone if its not an actual issue esp since it took me a whole day to get my stuff transferred and setup

Oled is known for reduced quality the lower brightness you go.
But all units will have varied levels of tints etc
In my case..
Unfortunately, yes. Also, it is more noticeable at 120Hz.
There is a thread about that in the Ultra section:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s20-ultra/help/green-tint-dark-background-low-t4065621
I also tried to get people with that problem in the S20+ section:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s20-plus/help/s20-ultra-oled-bad-uniformity-bright-t4067051
It is rather horrible and i noticed it right away the first time I used it in the dark. I think it can not really be fixed in Software, but it can be probably made less noticeable, as 120Hz is making it worse.
I wrote an 'email to the CEO' about that here:
https://www.samsung.com/uk/info/cont...email-the-ceo/ (example: UK)
If its same as below thread...Welcome to OLED!
Colour blending (blacks) problem
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9-plus/help/colour-blending-blacks-problem-t3765385
Had this on my S9+ and S10. Nothing can be done about it.
Using OLED since 2010. Starting with Symbian Nokias, Windows Phone Nokias and switching over with the S8+ - OLED only.
I suppose - never had a display that bad in this regard. At least never noticed it that bad right away. The upper right corner is almost always showing a green tint.
But I am glad, if it is not too widespread - then the S20+ I ordered will probably be fine.
in your case what?
Pardon me?

Hi,
Just attached a picture of my screen with adaptive brightness with low light with screen at 120Hz.
At 60Hz the screen is even, at least almost even.
What is your opinion?
Thank you in advance.
Report it to Samsung, probably get it exchanged, if possible and it really bugs you.
I gave back the ultra because it was too much green tint. The plus has it as well, not as bad as the ultra.
