Horizontal Edge Panel? - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Questions &

I really like the Edge Panel app from Samsung. It holds a lot of apps I use frequently and accessible by my thumb's reach and a swipe.
The question I have: Is there a similar app but with an edge panel that expands horizontally? The Edge Panel is a side bar but I can't reach the higher apps with my thumb. If there was a horizontal panel, it would be more convenient.
Or maybe an autohiding dock bar?

Check this out, it's not exactly what you described but it's designed around the one handed usage you're wanting.

Quick controls instead of navigation bar? Just an idea...

Edit: Forget it, s2d2 just made me realize that the newer versions of LMT have integrated exactly the stuff I'm talking about here
First of all, I’m no developer and I don’t even know if this stuff is possible, I just wanted to share my thoughts about an alternative way to navigate through the OS without wasting too much space with the navigation bar.
I use roman’s awesome AOKP ROM at the moment, which has an option included to hide navigation bar. To access home/back/menu/recent, you have to use an app like LMT for example.
Although LMT works quite ok, I think it is not the ideal solution to replace navigation bar. Drawing symbols is not as intuitive as I imagined it to be and it looks kind of weird how the homescreen and many apps react while drawing the symbols.
So I thought about alternatives and I had the following idea:
Would it be possible to create something like the quick controls from the browser for system-wide use? Let's say you swipe up from the bottom of the screen and a set of buttons appears in a half circle like it does in the browser. Of course it should work system-wide and across all apps, just like LMT.
To make it available across all apps, it would be necessary to still reserve a "swipe space" on the bottom to differ between app input and navigation bar access. It could be smaller though since you don't need to show any information on it. Theoretically, a line with a width of one pixel should be enough since the swipe gesture would start outside the screen (which makes me think, maybe this line can be a battery bar at the same time )
I see some advantages in this kind of navigation:
- maximum screen real estate
- a swipe from the bottom would be quicker and more intuitive than drawing symbols (where you have to remember the shape and the starting point for every action)
- smaller chance to trigger navigation buttons accidentally (for example while writing with onscreen keyboard) since the navigation bar is hidden.
- doesn’t get in the way of other swipe actions like scrolling/turning pages/homescreen transition. I can’t think of any situation where you swipe from the bottom of the screen that would interfere with the Quick Navigation.
So developers, do you think something like this is possible? It would be an awesome solution to get the most out of the screen size and still have quick access to the navigation buttons and maybe even custom apps/actions.
If it's not possible or just plain stupid, what are the problems realizing something like this?
Lmt has pie wheel=half circle stuff in your terminology, already implemented...

[APP][LAUNCHER] TasKarou Launcher Overlay

Tired of moving your fingers up/down your tablet to switch applications? Try out TasKarou!
TasKarou is a multitasking launcher overlay.
Taking inspiration from the 'Quick Controls' feature in the android browser, TasKarou provides a multitasking layer on top of a launcher on tablets.
By swiping anywhere on the left or right edge of your tablet screen, you can activate TasKarou's UI.
It gives you access to a quick, smooth, and intuitive interface to facilitate app launch, transition, and management for the user
The user interface brings a more responsive, and enjoyable level of interaction to your tablet.
Notes:
To use TasKarou, set it as the default home launcher, and from TasKarou's settings, select the actual home launcher you want to overlay.
TasKarou user interface is then triggered by swiping from either the left of right edge of your tablet screen, while still allowing access to the overlaid home launcher through the home button.
The app is also available in the android market.
nice app, but how do i use the browser controls? when im in the browser and put my finger to the side the taskarou menu opens...

It's not possible to use both at the same time, since both controls rely on the user touching the edge of the screen.
If you have an idea on how I could get around that issue, I'm all ear.

that sucks, because it basically makes the browser unusable.

some ideas from the top of my head:
- disable taskarou menu completely when in browser
- disable one side of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
- disable the upper/lower/middle half of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
on another note, the notification HAS to go. at least make it optional.
that being said, i really do like the concept of the app :good: i found myself regularly swiping in from the screen edges when not in browser, and then being disappointed that nothing happened.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have a few other ideas along with the ones you suggest that I will try to integrate, and test in the following days.
In the meantime, I updated TasKarou to also support android phones. I duplicated this thread in the 'Android Apps and Games' section to make it more visible: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984010
I like this. Definitely a nice addition to my current launcher.

Definitely slick in some aspects. Can't say I really like it as it messes with my LMT set up and takes up more RAM on top of it.
There's a lot to be done like distinguishing different "hotspots" and designating right side only or left side only. Overall though I really enjoy the transitions and how the menu auto-switches based on which choices you're hovering over. Very intuitive choices too that I agree with about which things go where.
Looking forward to the potential this holds in the future. I may just abandon my LMT setup if done right.
Edit: And of course the ability for users to add/edit the options, potentially switch the color for mere superficial reasons. Something like my screenshot.

Maybe ask SwipePad's developer.
(I'm not being sarcastic)
Really useful. Love the idea, but it does cause a few conflicts with apps that rely on swiping from the sides of the screen. Having said that, when I set the margin to 13 pixels I can use the Dolphin browser (for example) without too many issues by not swiping from the outer edge, but by placing the finger a little more away from the edge and then swiping inwards. Other apps are less forgiving.
What about a button in the notification area, which is visible at all times anyways?
EDIT:
If swiping has the preference, then it would be more logical to align the available programs/tasks to the side from which was swiped. Swiping and selecting can be done with one hand then, regardless of which hand was used to swipe with.
The recents button is useless, I never use it, ever.
I'd like the option to use this instead and just disable the side activation altogether.
Nice idea. However on TF101 after getting the quick control moving the finger to one of the options too fast causes the quick controls to disappear. I have to move the thumb really slow in order to select any option. Hopefully, this will be fixed soon:fingers-crossed:.
ppl get over it, the man is trying to make ur life simpler, so if u don't like some stuff about the app then tell him your opinions in a decent way so he can make a proper development for the app instead of trashing it, otherwise f*** off
I like this!
1. I only see it from the right edge in portrait.
2. Might have a user selected area(s) for its swipe. This would allow those with conflicts to fix them. There is a similar app on Play which just gives a row running/recent apps icons which is not a bad interface. I found its use of the bottom obtrusive.
3. The home key does not go home in the base browser (I am using Trebuchet on a CM10).
4. There is a difference between "running" and "recent" (exited, cached, and still available.) !!
Long press of home gives a vertically tiled thumbnail view of both.
Taskarou shows only icons of running apps, not recent.
Taskarou should show both, either in two panes or in one with some distinction?, i.e. frame around one or the other. I sort of like having the thumbnails and they could be tiled or cascaded. If cascaded, should be focus-able, if tiled, scroll larger view like the app list. Best eliminated the number of apps option or make that for the pane (but that would be scroll-able for more). Cascading the main webOS motif. Flick down to kill?

First of all, as far as I can see, no one is trashing his app. So maybe lower your tone a bit and at least pretend to be able to communicate in a proper way.instead of telling people to "F-off".
The developer probably appreciates the feedback as he responds to it. Feedback (be it positive or negative) is valuable for both him and the app he works on. The end product can benefit from any kind of feedback as it points out flaws and strong points, and it can give the developer some different perspectives and experiences from different users and from different devices.
The day a developer stops listening to his/her targeted market is the day the product will begin its downfall.

Was having issues on my Nexus 7 running SmoothRom 4.1.2. Updated to 4.2 and no more disappearing quick controls as soon as my finger leaves the border. To get them to stay I had to leave my finger there for at least 1.5 seconds. Now all is well. Really liking it. I look forward to extended and customizable menus
Update:
Scratch that. Conflict was gesture control. Had it set to consume events in starting zone. So a touch on the edge first went to gesture control. Just an iD10t error.

[Q] Removing/Changing the apps in the bottom row of the home screen

Hi there,
Just got a new Galaxy Tab 3 10.1. There's a line of apps installed below the page/panel indicator on the home screens, with a bunch of (to me) ill chosen apps. But I can't drag them off the screen to delete them, like I can the ones above the page indicator. I can't find any mention of what this apparently separate panel is called to search better.
Of interest, are people happy with their purchase of one of these? So far I'm finding it pretty ordinary - not horrible, just ordinary...

Just drag the apps on the lower part of your home screen to the upper part where it says delete. then you can go to your apps and drag them to the lower part of your home screen to add them in the dock
If you're saying about the lock screen then I don't know
Hi!
I'm pretty happy with the tab 10.1! With the latest OTA update it runs even smoother! The runtime is great, can handle up to 5 days with daily usage without charging. I received my leather case today, a 360° case.. I can put it horizontal or vertical and it "wakes up" when i open the case.
With that prize its an absolutely recommendation.

Hi there,
On the default home page, there's two large widgets on the top (weather and news). Below that there's a Google search bar. Below that there's a row of shortcuts. These all behave normally. Below that there's the page/panel indicator (telling you which home page you're on) and then at the bottom there's another row of shortcuts. It's that last, bottom row that I'm having trouble with. They don't seem to act normally - I can't drag them off to delete as normal. They appear to be hardwired. They are not the choice I would select and I want to change them.
Are other people able to delete these shortcuts?
Thanks!

I have the same problem. I'm tired of reading the answer "click and hold then drag it up". It seems to be the stock answer on all forums. They won't move! No matter what I do, the ridiculous row of apps bottom most on the screen is stuck. There's no help for this in the help app/widget. Someone must know how to unlock these darn things. I want to replace them with ones I use regularly.

Qranparoger,
Unfortunately that is the correct answer of click and hold and move. I just did it to mine and I can move two of the three apps I have in the bottom row. The only one that cannot move is APPS. My SETTINGS and FIREFOX can both be moved to the main screen above the bottom row.
My tab is rooted, but uses stock rom. There is nothing special about what I have done. I checked settings to see if I had changed a display or security function but I do not see anything. I do remember when I first got the tab that I too was having problems. But I do remember solving it and removing the bottom row (except APPS) and rearranging the icons or deleting the icons.
It think that maybe it might be in the APPLICATION MANAGER in SETTINGS that you "Turn Off" the app and it might vanish from the bottom of the screen. Again, I cannot remember how I did it but it can be done.

Latest ROM update - still can't change the apps. My tab isn't rooted, and I couldn't be bothered to now. I don't necessarily want to "turn off" the apps, just not use my precious home screen space. Anyway, I solved the problem by buying a Nexus. Yep, free Samsung is just collecting dust, piece of rubbish... Before anyone rages on me, there's a bunch of reasons I didn't like the Samsung, not just this one thing.

side bar display help please.

hi
i have just upgraded from the s7 edge to the s9+
the only issue i am having wit it is that i cant get the side bar to display my messages. on my old s7 when i got a text message i could just slide my finger across the the of the screen and the text message would scroll across the edge of the screen allowing be to read it without having to pick up my phone. that was great for me at work.
i am unable to find how to turn this on with the s9+ is it possible to do it? if yes how please?
You are referring to the RSS feed like option when screen is off? If so yes unfortunately that feature was removed since the S8/S8+. Now I'm used to not having it. They should have removed the Edge screen option and kept the RSS feed. Used to like getting my sports feed like that.
thats crap, the main thing i liked about the phone was that feature,
i think i ill return the s9+ and go back to the 7edge
thank you for the information.
If you go I to the edge panel settings click the download link at top right. The Messages app for edge bar is there. $1. 50

Peaves from New Tab S4 owner - thoughts appreciated

So I'm a (mostly) happy owner of a new Tab S4 SM-T830 256 gb tablet. My old tablet was a 64 gb Tab S2. I was excited about the hardware upgrades. I use my tablet in place of a laptop, and was starting to notice the speed and memory lags.
I'm having problems with three "features"
1) No fingerprint scanner. I wear glasses. Strong glasses. Progressive lenses. I turned on Samsung Pass, but it isn't clear to me if this works with external apps (like my banking app), or just within the Samsung Internet Browser.
2) I use Nova Launcher. On the Tab S2, the dock bar stayed horizontal on the bottom of the display when you rotated the tablet. For the S4 the dock seems to be locked to the short side of the screen.
3) Multiple peaves with the floating navigation bar. I'd like it to lock to the short side of the screen, like hard buttons do. But it stays horizontal. It takes up a lot of expensive real estate - can I add other shortcut buttons to it? In the best of all worlds, could you make it part of the docking bar?
3A) This is the most annoying "feature". I use SwiftKey for my keyboard app. Even though I have the navigation bar set to hide, any time I pull up the keyboard, there is the navigation bar. Right under the space bar. I can't tell you how many times I've missed the space far and hit one of the navigation buttons.
3B) This may be due to the wide-screen format of the tablet, but when you bring up the keyboard in landscape, and add in a cm for the navigation bar, it takes up 3/4 of the screen.
Any other thoughts, tips, tricks for migrating from a Tab S2 to an S4 are appreciated!
Thanks,
Joe
I've been using Samsung Pass on my Note 9 and now on the Tab S4. It seems to work almost anywhere: Apps & Browser. Although, not consistently. Still better than nothing. I also have Lastpass and it is a little annoying that I can't use iris scanner for that, but it gives you the option to use a PIN on the S4, which helps a little.
I just installed an app called simple control (On the Playstore). I have heard it works well for the Nav Bar issue, but I haven't tried it yet.
I can't speak to the other issues though, as I'v only had the Tab for 2 days.
As already mentioned, I also use Lastpass. I disabled Samsung pass for now as with Lastpass I can use on multiple devices. As far as the dock in Nova, not sure what's going on with that. I also find that annoying that it doesn't rotate either, thus I got rid of it. I just disabled it and placed my common icons right on the desktop. Then I added a shortcut icon to open the App Drawer. It rotates, so kind of like having the dock. In regards to the Navigation bar, try Samsung's One Handed Operation App in the Galaxy Store. It's a nice alternative to the Navigation bar. I wasn't sure I would like it at first but now use it exclusively. Thus I also now hide the standard Nav bar.

I use Samsung Pass & LastPass in conjuction.
So far both works perfectly on any apps & website.
I used to use Nova Launcher but in this Tab S4, I skip it because I think it has everything I need...and I also installed some apps to give more functional effects.
Those apps are: Rotation Control, Blockada & Internet Speed Meter
But if you really want a floating NavBar you can just activate its built in Floating Navbar called Assistant Menu
It's located in the Accessibility>Dexterity and interaction section
A & B : I don't use Swiftkey, but I use Samsung Keyboard in conjuction with Tab S4 Keyboard Cover.
You can resize Samsung Keyboard to your liking and if you use Tab S4 for typing I recommend you buy its Keyboard cover as it is a very good physical keyboard.
I hope my answer helps & if you still have any questions just ask me.
Solution for #2
2) I use Nova Launcher. On the Tab S2, the dock bar stayed horizontal on the bottom of the display when you rotated the tablet. For the S4 the dock seems to be locked to the short side of the screen.

I managed to solve this with the help of another thread . You need to go to the Display settings for the device and change the zoom to the smallest value. You'll find that the dock will now show at the bottom when you switch to landscape.
Thank you so much! That fixed the dock! I appreciate you taking the time to point out the post I missed!
Take care,
