USB adapter for powering both Fire Stick 4k and external HDD? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yo, have anyone tried some more powerful adapter for powering both Fire Stick 4k and external HDD? I know that it's possible to have powered USB hub that would power external HDD, but I would prefer to have just more powerful adapter with just one USB slot, then I would just split it with OTG cable (I'm using it with usb stick now). Considering that Fire Stick plug is 5W/1A, would 10W/2A do it for powering both HDD and stick? Or does it need to be 15W/3A adapter?

You have to use a variable power supply or boost/buck converter.
Fire TV stick 4K powers with a 5.25v/1A. You have recommended to use 2A and above

[Q] 2.5" HDD

Hello,
I have a USB otg connection adapter and thumb drives and sd cards work fine. Higher power devices (external 2.5" HDD) don't work as they need more power. I have a Y usb cable for my external hard drive (one usb plug for data and one for extra power). Can I connect the data plug to my otg adapter and the other usb connector to a wall charger in order to make my Note work with my hard drive? Or am i going to break something in my Note as there are no diodes in the y-cable blocking current going from the wall charger into my Note?
edit: and if this works: any suggestions for the file structure? FAT is not ideal due to file size limitations and NTFS is not ideal due to licensing. Does the Note supports exFAT up to 1 TB?
Yes, you can. You can use a wall adapter, a powered USB hub or like me, a portable battery with USB output that lets you use that HDD on the go.

I've noticed that the 10.1 won't power some things like a 2.5" portable drive that my Note 2 can power just fine. Not sure if there is a reason for this and it's working as intended or just a bug?

It is only by a fluke that the Note 1 powers an HDD. These devices are not designed to power anything but USB sticks. Not sure if there is enough juice to power a USB3 stick so do not look for bugs or solutions as this is not a bug but that how the device is designed.

OTG on Fire TV.

Anyone know where I might find an OTG cable for the Fire TV (Not stick)? It uses a USB A connector only - I can only find micro otg adapters.
I used a regular USB A<-->A cable that I got for like 2eur in order to access the FireTV's fastboot.
Just looking for an otg cable for it. Not trying to access fastboot

What are you wanting to achieve with an OTG cable?
Hooking up a Dual Shock 4 controller to it.
It works out of the box using a standard cable for regular apps like limelight or just games in general
However for the remote play app for PS4, the button mapping is off. A few of the buttons do not work. Thankfully twisted89 has modded the app to work but it requires an otg connection. Confirmed working on my phones using an otg cable (micro usb). Only problem is I cannot find an otg cable for the fire TV.
Try a USB A male to microusb female adapter between the otg adapter and the fire tv
Thanks I'll give it a go
Are you familiar with what an OTG cable is compared to a regular micro USB cable? OTG simply shorts the "sense" pin to ground, which when plugged into an appropriate device will enable that device to use its USB port as a Host Mode port (instead of normal operation as a slave/peripheral device).
Full size USB A has no "sense" pin, and the Fire Tv automatically operates as a Host device unless its in bootloader(?) mode and connected to another host computer (for fastboot).

2nd Gen Fire TV USB power

Hi,
I have just got a 2nd generation Fire TV.
When I plug in an external hard drive the USB port does not seem to have enough power so the drive just spins up then clicks endlessly.
Does any one else have this same issue?
Do I have a dodgy box or is this a common flaw?
I have tried with 2x different Western Digital portable drive
(1 x 1Tb , 1 x 2Tb my passport ultra)
You need to provide external power to the drive through a powered hub or USB Y-Cable (+ power adapter). Alternatively use a powered USB external drive.
Also, make sure it's formated in FAT32. It won't read anything else. Including exFat.
Yeah thanks,
I have ordered a Y cable to provide external power to the drive.
Not ideal though.
The 1st Gen (Which I have a few of) can sufficiently power a portable drive on their own.
Just another negative point for the so called "improved" 2nd generation Fire TV, unless they can provide more power to the USB port through a kernel update?

The 1st generation is the same unless rooted.

All my 1st Gens are rooted so I wouldn't know otherwise
My 2nd gen is also rooted but as I said, even with root it doesn't power the portable drive sufficiently.

Fire TV Stick 4K with HDD external docking

Hi,
Need help how I can used HDD external 2.5” 500Gb with docking station with my Fire TV Stick 4K?
My docking station
Hard Drive Docking Station, FIDECO USB 3.0 to SATA HDD Docking Station Dual-Bay Ex... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GZLKQSN/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_i_j9cbDbZ8GBSCM
Reason to used docking station, I want my HDD with docking can connect with PC & Fire TV.
I’ve already formatted my HDD to Fat32 and make partition to 128Gb ( known limited size as thumb drive)
Still not detect on Fire TV.
Help for solution ...
Many thanks
I have a DAS with USB 3.0 and I plug it into my USB ports on my router. Then all devices in the house have access. All my fire tv can play content through kodi because it support samba.
If you have a stick it doesn't support USB. Only micro USB which is for power so you would need an otg adapter if you want to plug directly. And I believe only gen2 or higher supports otg

This solution might be work an external storage with NTFS, F2FS, EXT4 and extFAT: https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/magisk-amazon-firetv4k-ntfs-f2fs-ext4-t3991981

Working OTG Cable that supplies power and USB port for a 3rd-gen 4K Fire Stick?

Buying what appeared to be what I needed from Amazon, only to find it doesn't power my 3rd gen 4K Fire Stick, let alone any additional USB device, I can only turn to the community to help me. I've already bought the hub that provides ethernet & USB ports, so I'm just needing the cable. Thanks.
Can you link me to the hub you purchased? also after you find the cable you're looking for please let us know if the hub works correctly.

Just a generic hub (I can't link as I do not have enough posts. - search "UGREEN RJ45 Ethernet Adapter with USB 2.0 Hub" on Amazon). It's working fine. I found out my issue was that my power cable supplied from Amazon with my Fire Stick was the culprit. Its micro USB male was fitting correctly in the firestick but not the female end of the OTG cables - unlike the other Amazon supplied power cables I borrowed to test. Replacing that fixed the issue.
I use an OTG cable from a Google/ASUS Nexus Player that has microUSB power in as well as a USB-A port and it works fine.
