Hello All,
aXcelio here…..
I'm new to the world of Android switched from the iPhone….(was and still am a loyal user of IOS devices for the better part of 5 years)…..but out of shear boredom, I made the decision to decided to make the switch and I for the most part could not be happier. In doing so I picked up a Galaxy Note II SGH-1317 (AT&T), I've updated the stock rom (I think that's what its called) to JellyBean 4.2.1……now I'm in a place where I want take advantage of some of the feature embedded in CM (it looks really cool)……
So a buddy of mine, who's been running with droid's for as long as I've been running IOS decided to give me a hand in getting my device rooted……we used an exploit called EXYNOS, and installed TWRP (again forgive me ignorance if I'm speaking out of term…I'm learning, or trying too), everything appears to be running without incident, (with the exception of my not being able to create any backup…as the system tells me that I don't have any free space)….get back to that in a lil bit.
Now….I scored the CM site as well as XDA, but haven't really been able to find what I'm looking for (some of which could be out of fear of destroying my device, and some of which is based on a lack of understanding….more I think though of destroying my device……..I should note that I completely understand that any of that any info I get here or there…..is as is, and without any guarantee.) So here I am reaching out to you folks for some guidance……..with that allow me to ask a couple of questions…..
In an effort to get a better understanding of what my buddy did…..I would like to go through the process of setting my device back to defaults (as if I just brought it home from the store) no root, no play apps that I've installed….(I can do that later, and I'm not overly concerned about losing anything) and re-root the device…..that being said, is there a way to that (set the device back to defaults)….I've seen one article using the stock firmware, (which I've downloaded) and another which states that I can do a factory reset which will unroot the device…(but not sure what approach to take or for that matter I should even worry about that)
The second thing I'm wondering about is this……most of what I've read regarding the install of CM is that I need clockwork recovery (or something along those lines) but I have TWRP…..if I opt to not reset the phone back to factory default and unroot (or find that I really don't need to move in that direction) can I install CM using TWRP?…..if I need clockwork, can I instal this over TWRP……or do I need to do something different?
a
The last thing I have (at least for right now) is this….assuming I can move forward with the install and configuration of CM, I wonder if any of you can provide a step by step guide on how I go about this on my particular device……I've seen this article well as this ones these however appear to be for version 10, of CM…but I see there is a 10.1……I read another article (but can't seem to find it now…which stated that it worked with my device and 10.1, with a link but all of the nighties….seemed to be specific to the Galaxy Note…..not the Note II…..and again I would much rather reach out to you guys for guidance prior to doing anything…..The last question I have is I see there is a version 7100 of my phone and then one that says something about LTE (but not specific version……) is the SGH-1317 an LTE device that is version agnostic (if you will)….in other words if I see a post for an LTE GNII is that speaking to my device or something else……
Thanks a lot……
aXcelio
If your all ready rooted why go back to stock?
You don't have to install CWM TWRP is fine as your main recovery.
don't install any ROM for the N7100, that is the non LTE version of the Note 2, it will brick your phone.
CM10 is Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. CM10.1 is 4.2 Jelly Bean.
Read the forums for the specific ROM it will give instructions on installing the ROM even if it mentions to use CWM, installing with TWRP is fine.
READ READ READ and have fun
I think i understand, you want to reset and do all this stuff on your phone yourself.
? You would would have to Odin your phone back. Either mobile Odin or one for pc. Pretty simple task once you get the files you need. Think that's right..
Edit: as the guy above me said either is fine. Just preference in what recovery to use. I would suggest to only use cmr based recovery as those seem to be more friendly with development programs and roms than the official by koush that you see in play store. I wouldn't even downloaded it.

PC Odin is more safe for the record
Here is a link to a post that breaks down the basics of starting from scratch, rooting and installing clockworkmod and then flashing a ROM. The instructions are in reply to a gentleman inquiring about the Jedi ROM but the instructions will be good for most other ROMs out there. Just check the installation instructions in the op of any rom to make sure there is not something else required for install.

I have myself a Rogers based S3, that has the stock Jelly Bean OS on it.
Its bogged down, I don't like it anymore.
I have seen the OS on the Nexus unit's and find it to be WAY better (more fluid, more options and much better UI for texting)
Now for the explanation of this thread....
I have NO idea what I'm doing anymore when it comes to this phone. It's not rooted, NO CWM installed.. And i fear i may brick it if i don't know exactly what i'm doing.
That being said, i would like to go to a stock Google OS, or something very close to it.
What are my options? I would like to try and make this as pain free as possible. As far as i can recall, rooting//cwm and Os load on my captivate was really easy... This time around, i am finding way too many "possible" ways of doing everything. I think more or less, i need to be pointed to the right way so i don't get confused.
Anyone willing to toss me a hand on this one :fingers-crossed:

Instead of linking me to something I've already read, how about actually saying something.
I'm finding too many "this might work for rogers, this might not"
Last time i followed a tutorial meant for an AT&T unit, I hard bricked the phone, and ended up tossing it
Sorry if it was in the wrong section before Kenny.
How about me not responding at all next time? I know no one is forcing me but its simple enough to find this info by searching. I understand your hesitance... No one wants an expensive brick.
I'll put something together for you later today unless someone else beats me to it. Deal?

First you need to get root. 2 easy ways here. First one is install a stock rooted ROM with Odin. Look for the Rogers image here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 Second one is to install CF-Root with Odin, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963790 Make sure to get the one for I747M. Second option is faster b/c the zip is way smaller. Now you have stock root.
Next get GooManager https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.s0up.goomanager&hl=en. Run it, press menu and then install open recovery script or something like that. It will install TWRP custom recovery. Now you can flash ROMs. Perform Nandroid backup before commencing flashing.
For a pure Google like experience, give Slimrom or AOKP (Task650) a try. Very stable.

Hey guys.
So i got the phone rooted, and TWRP is installed. I have a NANDROID backup already done, but i'm a little confused on the roms. Could someone help me with this?
Last i recall, the roms were a single file, Ive downloaded the AOKP JB in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684 but i'm confused on how to install the rom (as its a .zip file, there's multiple files in the folder....)
Thank in advance!
Edit - I tried to flash the rom anyways, and AOKP one Failed and turned up with an error. It comes up saying "Error executing updater binary in zip "
Edit2 - I just managed to flash Dandroid to the S3, but apps are failing to load everywhere. Unsure if this is something to do with the network or anything, but im also not getting LTE with Rogers.... Play store wont connect either (and i did to the Gapps update...?)

Before flashing you need to wipe. Data, system, dalvik and cache. Oh and before this put the new ROM files and anything you want to keep like pics on the external sdcard.
Do you have an updated bootloader? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2321310
Try re downloading the AOKP ROM and flash the while thing (the .zip). Then flash the gapps. You may have a bad download the first time.
With non-touchwiz ROMs you need to install the ROM and gapps. Do not install any gapps with dandroid.

If that sorts your issues, then call it done and thank the people that helped you.
The earlier suggestions were good and not to be faulted. However there is more than one way to do most things. So if you are not happy for whatever reason here is a slightly different approach. There are some very stable custom ROMs that are very snappy and have a similar no lag, fluid feel (Google calls this "butter") to them vis a vis the Nexus. So a simple approach to that result would be:
1. Download and install the Samsung S3 V7.0 toolkit (program)
2. Start the toolkit program
Choose "n" when asked if you want to update the program
Choose your phone version. This is probably "53" for you
Choose option #1 from the main menu to install the necessary USB driver to your PC
After the driver is installed, connect your phone to your PC with the Samsung USB cable.
If your phone is currently stable, you can skip steps #3 + 4.
If you are uncertain, then steps #3 + 4 will restore a stock Rogers firmware as a starting point:
3. Go to Samsung updates and download a stock Rogers firmware
4. Install the stock firmware. This is toolkit menu option #8, 4, 2
5. Download the custom Wicked Aroma ROM v10 (main thread here)
6. Copy the Wicked Aroma ROM to your phone. You can do this in windows by going to file manager and drag and drop the Wicked file (leave it zipped) on the "Samsung Mobile MTP Device - Phone/Data" folder icon.
7. Flash the Wicked ROM from "recovery mode"
Ensure that your battery is at least 80% charged. Then turn your phone off and disconnect the USB cable
Push and hold the home button, volume up and power button at the same time until you feel the phone vibrate and see blue text on screen in the upper left hand corner. Then release the buttons.
On the onscreen phone menu, choose wipe (factory reset)
Then choose install and select the Wicked_v10. zip file
The rest of the install will be automated on your phone screen. It will ask you to select a number of options. If you are uncertain, then just leave them at the default settings. Ensure that you leave the wipe cache setting as is when asked. And I'd recommend the stock theme and stock kernel to start. The rest you can leave as is or change to what sounds attractive to you.
Note that the wicked ROM will change your boot splash screen. Most people won't care and it's not that hard to revert if you don't like the logo for some reason. This is the logo that appears for a few seconds when you first power up a phone.
This is a very snappy, pretty much zero lag and stable ROM. I think that you'd like it.

Thanks for the lengthy reply.
I tried putting the new bootloader on there, and tried re-flashing, but it did the same thing. So, in the mean time i'm going to use the Dandroid rom (didn't install the Gapps) and it seems to be working okay. I just fear a bit as the phone seems to be running much warmer then it usually does....
In the mean time, ill use this one, and see if it makes a difference (it could still be loading all my settings and whatnot, so we'll see what happens. I love the look of this rom though. Very simple, very clean. Exactly what i was looking for. Those samsung stock themes are terrible.... Thanks a bunch for the help people. Greatly appreciate it!
Personal taste varies a lot and there are a lot of themed ROMs on this site. So you should be able to find something that you like. It sounds like you want something snappy and Spartan looking. If you like your results so far, then no need to go any further.
If you end up trying the Wicked ROM, perhaps choose the Miui or Holo launcher and ASOP lock screen options.
There are an endless variety of home screen themes to be discovered. And no way to know what you might like. A few random screen shots:

Just installed the Wicked rom on my S3. NICE! Need to play with the settings a bit to get it configured the way I like, but a definite keeper.
Very nice job.....Kudos!
Hello everyone,
I want to start by saying that this is my first post on xda, having just signed up a few minutes ago. I tried to search for any inquiries that were similar to mine, and couldn’t find any, but I may have missed them so I apologize if that’s the case, and I’m really not even sure if this is the correct area to post this in. Once again, I’m sorry if it’s not right. I also should say that I’m not very knowledgeable in the area of rooting, and flashing roms, and I’m sure that you guys know much more than me. That having been said, you’ll have to bear with me and my lack of understanding if that’s okay, as I’m pretty limited. I've encountered a problem with my GS3 (Galaxy S3) today, where it now gets stuck in a boot-loop every time I try to turn it on. Prior to that happening, I was running the stock, unrooted AT&T android version that was released in May (4.4.2 I believe?), and I had been having a lot of problems with performance and battery life. But as I had had the phone for over two years (I bought it in November 2012), I simply thought that it was slowing down and I thought it could possibly stop working, but as I said, I’m no expert. Back to earlier today, I was using the phone as I normally do (texting, light web-browsing, etc.), when I heard the notification tone indicating I had received a text. I picked up my phone, pushed the lock/power button to turn the screen on, and it said something to the effect of (I wish I had written it down, but I didn’t think to at the time) “software broken, you’ll need to factory reset your device” (that’s very much just my recollection, so I may have it completely wrong), along with a prompt to reset it. I touched that, and it just shut off. I tried to turn it back on, and it would keep shutting off after about 15-20 seconds. But I was able to get it into both recovery and download mode – just not booted up. So I thought to (probably stupidly) try to flash a rom, and I’ve tried several since that time (my phone won’t mount as a device on my laptop, thus preventing transfers, though I was able to get around this by using a micro sd card adapter and putting the card in that, then transferring the files to the card). But the first I tried – and was successful in flashing was called AOKP 4.4.4 (Kitkat) made by Task650 from 9-10-14. I’ll try to post the link to the thread that I used to research it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684. As I’ve always been on touchwiz, I found out after I flashed it that I had to download the gapps package, which I tried to do from this link https://plus.google.com/+SeanHacker/posts/AGq2b8YwjXB . I downloaded that and tried to flash it by following this guide http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...he-gapps-package-after-installing-cyanogenmod . I’m sorry if I’m not organizing this in the right manner, but I’m doing my best! So anyway, I installed it from zip within clockwork mod recovery and then cleared the cache and dalvik cache afterwards, as the person in the above link said to. Then, I tried to reboot and that’s what I got stuck in the boot-loop. I left my phone for 30-35 minutes thinking it might’ve been taking awhile because I’d just tried to install the google apps. But it never did seem to do anything. Since that time, I’ve tried installing the stock rom (which I downloaded here: http://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyS3/SGH-I747/StockROMS.net-SGH-I747_ATT_1_20120522193451.zip) through odin and the recovery mode installation, cyanogenmod 10.2.1, and synergy r484 ( http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyS3Verizon/roms/Synergy/Synergy-S3_19Apr13_1622_r484_s.zip ), all of which have been unsuccessful. The closest I got to being complete was going through the aroma installer for synergy, before trying to install and getting the message “Something was not successful during rom install. You will likely have a non-booter if you see this. If it constantly happens press save log in aroma and report this in xda thread.” (I didn’t know how to save the log and post it here). So that’s about everything that’s happened up until this point, and I apologize if my rambling is hard to follow lol. I just didn’t know what else to do. I’m very scared that I’ve bricked my device and that it won’t work anymore. I’m out of ideas, so I would greatly appreciate any and all help and/or input! Thank you very much for your time!
* Here is the link for the multi-window guide: http://www.howtogeek.com/189345/how-to-get-multi-window-multitasking-on-any-android-phone-or-tablet/
ok , let me get the ball rolling but not real knowledgeable myself.
1) do you know your bootloader and modem version.?
2) not bricked as long as it still can get in a bootloop.
3) sometimes (if were lucky) you can do the 'pull-battery' trick., pull battery out , wait a minute or so , put back in , do the button thing to get to recovery (power, volume up and home at same time).
(i , personally , would probably do a complete wipe and try to install the CM 10.2.1 zip to at least have my phone up and running. you still wont have gapps but you can get that after your phone is back up).
hopefully (!!!) someone more knowledgeable will chyme in , cause the battery pull trick is a maybe/maybe not. sorry dont have more right now. good luck.

Since your phone was running 4.4.2, do not attempt to flash any ROMs using that attempt to downgrade your bootloader to anything prior to 4.4.2.
Try this to get your phone up and running:
download the latest CM11 for the d2lte and save it to an external SD card: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=d2lte
dowload the latest tar.md5 version of Philz Touch for the d2lte from here: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_...Edition/d2lte/
boot phone in download mode, open Odin 3.07, do not check anything except f.reset.time, flash Philz via PDA box, remove USB cable when you see the word Reset appear in the status window, remove battery, replace battery, boot into recovery, format system, Dalvik, data, and cache, flash cm11, and reboot.
thank you audit13 , i was really reaching. lol. to heck with mighty mouse. its "mighty-aidit13 here to save the day". :good:

I'm sorry, but I don't know my bootloader or my kernel version, unfortunately. I've got a lot to learn, and this happening clearly proves that lol. I will try that with cm right now, and let you know how it goes! Should I download the latest nightly or the latest stable version? I'm sorry for all of the questions!

I appreciate your patience. I don't know if I could be so kind and forgiving if I was in your shoes right now. I just feel like a total idiot for not seeking advice before I flashed the initial rom.
The latest nightly or stable will do. You just want to get your phone up and running with a ROM.
It was successful!
I flashed cm and it worked! It is seemingly fully-functioning right now (I haven't noticed anything that isn't working), but I have two more things I'd like to ask about, if you don't mind. First, and this is the more important one to me, is getting the gapps if that's at all possible (though I'm a little hesitant about it), though I can live without them. I would post the link to the aforementioned gapps guide, but I cannot post links in replies right now as I do not yet have 10 posts, but I will try to edit the initial post. Since that’s where I ran into the problem initially, it’s may not a good idea to follow that link’s instructions. Secondly, one thing I'd like to do – seeing as this is my first non-touchwiz rom – is get multi-window installed on this rom, if I can do that. There was a link I was reading up on, though I don’t know how accurate or “safe” it is. I will edit the initial post with the link if I can. I feel bad for having all of these different problems and questions, but you guys are lifesavers. For all I knew, I’d be stuck with an expensive paperweight from this point on, so you guys really helped me so much!

dont know about multi-window , my phone is very bare bones (not even gapps).

Confirm the bootloader and modem on your phone using the Samsung Info App from the Play store. Once you have this information, you can look for TW-based ROMs in the development threads that are compatible with your bootloader and modem.
I haven't had an s3 for over 10 months so I can't comment on the availability of the multiwindow function in CM ROMs.
That's very much appreciated!
Thank you so much! Would you mind looking at that link that was edited into the first post to tell me if the procedure itself is correct? I just don't want to take any chances!
Okay, I will do that as soon as I get the gapps installed Thank you so much again for all of your help!

if your talking about the flashing guide for gapps , it looks correct. you flash gapps from recovery just like you did the CM11 rom.
"all i can really do , is stay out of my own way and let the will of heaven be done"
The Xposed Framework will do what you want to do. If you want to try CM12, Xposed will not work as it has not been updated to work with Android 5.0.
I recommend setting up your ROM with all of the apps and settings you like. Once you have done that, boot into recovery, create a nandroid backup, boot into the ROM, install Xposed Framework and play with it. If something goes wrong, boot back into recovery and restore your nandroid backup which will undo everything you did since you create your backup.

Okay, thank you so much, and I'm fine with staying on CM11, I think. Yes, I was talking about the gapps guide in the last post; sorry I didn't clarify it better haha. Is there a way to create the nandroid backup onto my micro sd card?
there is in twrp. dont know about cwm , but should be though.

You should be able to specify the backup location in recovery. For me, I tend to save it to an external SD card and make a copy on your computer for safekeeping.
Thank you and I'm sorry! This is just all so confusing to me, and I'd be completely lost without both of you helping me!
Good Morning,
First of all, I would like to ask for forgiveness for my first post/thread being a dummy's request thread and would really appreciate your help/guidance if you don't mind.
Cause of my f* up!
First, I don't want to blame the ROM nor my phone, it was my anxiousness to get Kitkat which messed my phone up. It often* used to say, System Update available, +-500 MB downloaded. My carrier said, "They only provide Kitkat upgrade to S4+ and S3 phones that are bought after Kitkat came." however, i the System update downloaded message seems to have deceived me big time. I usually skip it, didn't care much but today, it was different, I wanted* to have Kitkat. Summer vacation started, from today and I said, what the hell, lets give it a try. The phone got stuck with "Rebooting now..." message. I searched in google for quite a long time regarding this issue and majority replies for that problem were questions, "Is you phone rooted?", "Is your phone using custom ROM?" etc. So, I simply searched online how to get back to the stock* ROM? or factory system. (Sorry if I am using weird words here, couple of words, I learned it an hour ago!) I did the flashing? Odin-ed* it with stock ROM and deleted cache, data before doing the actual Odin work though and I don't quite remember the other word, dal.... something. Anyways, I couldn't find any proper Virgin Mobile's stock ROM and I am quite sure, staying awake the whole night is messing up my eyes as well but then again, I found lots of ROM releases for VM but I think I might be doing it wrong. I flashed my phone again, my carrier is Sprint now. :silly:
I will try my best to recall and provide you with the information that I remember so far before I Odin-ed? Flashed? my phone as the new info seem a little different.
Pre-Flash
Code:
Model # : SPH-L710
Android version : 4.3 Jellybeans
Carrier : Virgin Mobile USA
Network : Virgin Mobile
Rooted : Yes
Recovery Service/system/application : Philz touch recovery (Props to the developer, I've tried couple of those recovery systems under 8 hours of research and trials-errors, yours in the best)
Phone : Samsung Galaxy S III
Main Question
Anything I can do to go back to Virgin Mobile from Sprint? :crying: I can fully access my phone, just no service and all.
What do I believe I've
A backup from Philz Touch Recovery in my external SD card.
I can still access Recovery menu so I don't think my phone has already turned into a paper weight.
If you have any kind of suggestions regarding this issue, please do provide me with it, I would really appreciate it.
You may also add a little abusive words in it, I don't mind.

If you have a backup you made with Philz, just restore that backup. That's probably the easiest way.
Also, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2774333 This will put you on the last release. Then just ODIN Philz again and re-root.
People have also had luck flashing WickedX on Boost and VM without issue. But you will need the latest firmware to do so...which should be in the link a few sentences up.
Did you try flashing a Virgin APN fix zip?
I bring to you completely stock builds of Android TW-Lollipop 5.1.1 (N910PVPU4COG5) for the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 4.. I built both of these stock rooted ROMs myself from the official Samsung tar ball. The ROM will self root upon flash and it has init.d/busybox support. Knox and Sprint Itson has been removed completely. Both ROMs are completely stock with all of the original factory installed apps. Available in odexed and deodexed . Both ROMs are identical other than one being odexed and the other deodexed. Also included in both ROMs in this thread is the stock OG5 modem and HLOS APN patch to ensure you have the latest modem & APN's from the latest OG5 software.
Other than the removal of Knox and Sprint Itson, these roms are all stock in every other way. They are stock and will stay that way. Please don't ask for mods, changes, etc in this thread. These roms are intended for those people who want the stock roms in their original form with the addition of root and removal of Knox & itson, as well as other members who need a good solid base for their rom projects. I give permission for other dev's to use this rom as your base and I highly recommend that you do so because it is bug-free and built from the official Samsung tar ball. However I do expect credit if you use this rom for any other project. If you like my work please press that Thanks button, rate this thread and consider a kind donation! Enjoy!
Important Notes: Before flashing ANY Lollipop 5.1.1 TW-based ROM, including this one, you MUST first do one of the following:
1. Take the Lollipop OG5 ota update on your phone.
2. Odin flash the stock ALL_SPT_N910PVPU4COG5_N910PSPT4COG5_CL5303209_QB5691107_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
Thanks to @Sunderwear for the tar ball!!! Without him we would NOT have the official rom img's to build from. :highfive:
Once you have correctly updated your Note 4 to Lollipop 5.1.1, DO NOT... I repeat, DO NOT attempt to root your phone before flashing any of my OG5 Android 5.1.1 ROMs. ONLY flash the latest TWRP recovery using odin on your pc. Nothing else. the ROM zip will pre-root your phone as well as flash the stock OG5 pre-rooted OG5 kernel by @freeza
If you are still on any KK or Lollipop 5.0 TW-based ROM such as NIE, OB7, OE1 , OF5 or OB7 (including any KK AOSP/CM-based roms) then you MUST first update to Lollipop 5.1.1 OG5 by one of the two methods I mentioned above BEFORE flashing this ROM. Failure to properly update your device partitions to 5.1.1 OG5 firmware absolutely WILL cause problems. You have been warned, Please don't ask for help if you did not follow my simple instructions above.
Flashing instructions: ***Before beginning the flash/setup process MAKE SURE your battery has at least 50% charge and/or connected to the charger!!!***
1. Backup anything you don't want to lose off your internal and external storage to another location just to be safe.
2. Download the rom using your pc. (downloading with your phone has a much higher risk of file corruption. Not recommended with large files).
3. VERIFY the md5!!! Once the download has finished, compare the AFH md5 using a md5 tool on your pc. (Google "md5 checksum windows").
4. Put the downloaded rom onto your internal storage or external micro sd card.
5. With phone powered off, reboot into recovery by pressing and holding volume up, power and the home button until you see the Samsung logo then release all buttons.
6. Once in recovery choose the wipe button and do a factory reset three times. Optional but recommended is to wipe "Data". This will wipe all of your user data such as google accounts so MAKE SURE you backed up first like I said in step #1 above! Next go to "advanced wipe" and select all of the partitions EXCEPT micro-sd card and internal storage. Internal storage is optional but recommended when first updating to a major software revision such as 4.3 to 4.4 or 5.0.1 to 5.1.1. The reason is to remove left-over data from previous version of Android and start with a clean slate.
7. Choose the "Install" option and select the rom "Sprint_Stock_N910PVPU4COG5_xxx" from either your internal or external micro-sd card. It will flash the rom and give a confirmation once completed.
8. Press "Reboot" then "reboot system". You should get no prompts or warnings about not having root.
9. Initial rom "optimization" will take several minutes while ART builds its cache and the phone will remain on the yellow Sprint Spark screen for about 10 minutes (for the deodexed ROM). Let the phone optimize for at least 10 minutes and the screen WILL eventually turn off or show the setup wizard once it finishes. If the screen turns off then simply turn it on and proceed to setup your phone.
10. Once finished with the setup wizard, wait a few moments and the phone will automatically install the Sprint apps. You must either "accept" or "disagree" with each and every google prompt for these apps or else the installs pause until you do so.. Also you will be prompted for the "connections optimizer". Quickly set it to what you want and close it. That's it! You're done!
flashing anything on your device is done at your own risk. There is no way myself or any other developer can guarantee that flashing this ROM or any other file will not brick your device or otherwise cause some other type of damage. This is just a standard warning. I am not responsible for anything that you do to your device.

General info for those new to building custom roms
Feel free to use this is a base for your rom projects. Here is some basic info for newcomers wanting to make their own custom rom.
# CSC is already setup correctly for sprint as the bootloader has a mind of it's own and I have to lie to it in order for it to properly flash the correct csc for the sprint version.
# For deodexing, I personally use SVA deodexer. It has been the most reliable 99.9% of the time with no fails. Make sure you use the correct version that's compatible with the Note 4... which is the 32bit version. Also, keep in mind that any deodexed apk or jar can still possibly be corrupt without any warnings or error reports from the deodexing tool. Remember this!!! If you suspect you have a bad deodexed file then replace it with the original odexed version from my stock odexed rom and see if the problem resolves. The odexed apk's & jars are 100% originals from the extracted img's of the official Samsung tar ball so they are 100% good. I don't typically deodex with rom kitchens unless they have been updated to fully support Lollipop 5.0 and newer including apktool. The stand-alone deodexers are easier and better in my opinion.
# If you want to change out the kernel, simply swap out the boot.img in the kernel folder. (you will also need to edit the updater-script to remove or edit the ui_script credit to freeza for his stock root permissive kernel. (not mandatory but it would make sense to do this).
# For debloating be careful what you remove from the rom. Don't just remove stuff willy nilly because you think you don't "need" it. Research the apk's and make an educated decision. "MobileInstaller.apk" and "ID.apk" are the two responsible for downloading the bulk of the bloat on first boot so you need to get rid of those two for sure. I personally leave Sprint zone in my roms in order to allow people to have access to their accounts as well as install any of the sprint apps if they do want some of them such as Sprint TV, etc. You can get most all Sprint apps from Google Play also.
# You will obviously want to edit the updater script to change the name of the rom, credits, etc. Just leave the very top line alone as that is my signature and it needs to stay intact. Everything else feel free to edit, just know what you're doing so you don't bork the script.
# Mods for Android 5.1.1 on TW based roms are going to come about as people make them and post guides, etc. Just know that ANY mod that is not specifically for android 5.1.1 on software OG5 WILL NOT work on our new OG5 software builds. All mods will need to be done from scratch specifically for the new OG5 software. So never flash or use a mod that was made for a previous software version or older version of Android. This includes mods for regular apps such as SecSettings, SystemUI, Samsung messaging, Samsung contacts, etc, etc.
So don't do it! The reason is very simple. There is new and different java code in all of the smali/classes. The only time you may be able to use mods from previous software versions is when the latest revision is a small revision with only a few patches. You definitely can't use mods from Android 4.4 on a 5.0 Lollipop rom or a mod from a 5.0 rom on 5.1 without issues. This is your official warning!
# Theming Lollipop (both 5.0 and 5.1) is easier in many ways than any previous version of Android. You will need to learn several things and do a lot of research before you get your feet wet, but I can say that theming is probably the funnest part of making a custom rom. You should definitely learn to theme first. I will not write any tutorials for theming or setting up apktool etc because this stuff can be too technical to explain here. Besides, other people have already written tutorials in the past. Most of the information still applies today. Just make sure you use the LATEST apktool and use a tool that is updated to support Lollipop. I will recommend
3Minit Android Studio for it's all-in-one capabilities and ease of use for those new to decompiling & recompiling apk's. Give it a try. You will find it at http://3minit.com/ I have used it just to try it out but I use VTS mostly. It's more difficult to learn and definetely much more intimidating for beginners but it does a whole lot more and automates a lot of stuff once setup properly.
# There are already guides, instructions, etc here at XDA to help you get started with building roms, working with apk's, jars etc, So do your own researching on the web and get the "latest" info you can find for Android development. The information is out there and it doesn't cost a penny... only a few brain cells to comprehend. However, If you need help with something and you can't find the answers you're looking for, feel free to PM me and I will try to help you or point you in the right direction.
# Also know that there are a LOT of fellow XDA members who each specialize in one or more areas of Android development. If you take a look around you will soon see these smart and very talented people participating in other development threads. If you find a member who you think might be able to help you, just ask your question(s) in an appropriate thread and tag them in your post or perhaps send them a kind pm asking for their help. Generally, most people are willing to help you as long as you are willing to help yourself by way of searching and taking the initiative to figure things out on your own. Nobody wants to hold your hand so don't expect the red carpet treatment from anyone including myself, especially on basic things that you can easily figure out on your own.
That's about it for now...
HAPPY ROM BUILDING!!! My work here is done. Check please!

Thank you for the report. I found the problem with the help of you and another friend and I am re-uploading the rom. It was a simple mistake on my part with the systemui folder. Sorry for the trouble. Deodexed rom link will be updated afterwhile or first thing in the morning since it's so late.
If you want to fix the problem yourself just unzip the rom and go to system/priv-app/SystemUI folder and delete everything EXCEPT the "SystemUI.apk". The other "SystemUI-1.apk" and other "SystemUI" folder needs to be deleted leaving only the one real "SystemUI.apk". I deleted the rom so nobody else downloads it until I get the new rom uploaded . Thanks again for the report.
Massive kudos on the OP! This is how a dev should start a new thread. Well thought out, informative, and best of all, explaining why you should follow directions to a "t". Most informative yet. I can understand somebody asking questions that are answered in the OP, only if there is a language barrier. So many threads get bogged down with the same questions, over and over again. Also, dev is quick to respond on any problems found! Looking forward to Hybrid-X 3.0. Take your time. Always a quality rom with @tx_dbs_tx! :good:
Thank you for the kind words! New deodexed rom is uploaded and the link has been updated. Both ROMs should be perfect. It's very late and I'm off to bed. Enjoy folks!
Haven't run? into u n some time my friend. Glad to c ur still hard at it. Thx for this

Just an FYI, this ROM requires the same Netflix fix like Freeza's Rom. It won't work without flashing the zip. Thank you for the Rom.

Why would you want a stock rooted rom from an older device ported to a newer device that will be better off with a rooted version of its own stock rom?

Waiting on my Note 4 to arrive. Would this be a good ROM to flash when I unbox it? Provided I do all the updates first. I want to get the rooting and such out of the way first before I activate it on my line. Thanks.

This is a wonderful ROM. However, for me...
I wasn't getting calls or texts (I could place calls and send texts) with this ROM. Repeated tries at the ##72786# (or whatever, I'm typing that from memory) reset didn't fix the problem, and updating PRL and Profile didn't fix it, either. I called Sprint, and they did something at their end that fixed the problem. I should have asked exactly what, because I accidentally froze the wrong app and my phone wouldn't boot. So I re-flashed this ROM and then I couldn't get calls or texts again.
Anyone experience this and know of the fix? I fixed my phone by tying it to my Google Voice account, which is nice, because it not only allows me to get calls and texts again, it transcribes voice mails for me. But I'm still curious about what causes the problem and any potential fix.
Incidentally, Titanium used to let you unfreeze an app from the command line, but it appears the "pm" command doesn't exist anymore.
