Hello
When I use the Live TV via Kodi, as soon as I change the channel, it crash
Since logs are better than randoms word, here the full log of kodi, where I simply launched Kodi 14 and started streaming TV (to make sure it's as clean as possible) : http://pastebin.com/z1Ly3zxL
Anyone has an idea to fix that?
Thanks
Try to use different PVR client or switch to SPMC. Works there for me.
Try the hts addon I posted on the kodi forums...

Two questions, please:
1) Did you find a resolution?
2) What are you using for a tuner?

Unfortunately, nope, I don't watch TV that much so it's not really critical for me, but it still bugging me.
I'm using that as tuner : http://avertv.avermedia.com/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=519 - version A835.

Have you been here?: http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/AVerMedia
The last line says the A835 is supported under Linux, so I'd say your chances of getting it to work are better than nothing. FWIW

It work perfectly under linux, I use TVHeadend without problem anywhere else, but on the FireTV, it crash if I change the channel (Let say that I'm watching the 1st channel, and want to change to the second, well, then, Kodi crash)

Now I feel very bad. I swear I just read about a solution for that. From feeble memory, it was in TVHeadend - not in Kodi.
I'll go pick through my browser history. Maybe I can find it again...

It work, but it's not really usable as a solution, CPU get overloaded and video drop frames: http://i.imgur.com/qYRBVTd.jpg , however it would indicate a problem with the hardware video decoder, in that case, out of luck for me, no chance of fixing it without at least having root.

Well, damn.
If it's any comfort, we may be in this together. I ordered a Hauppauge 1191 WinTV-HVR-950Q today. But at least I know if it doesn't work with the Fire, it will work on my Pi.

It's a boring but not critical issue, the TV is working fine as long as you don't change channel. beside, it might still be fixable by adding a delay to the channel switch. I know TVHeadEnd is a bit special (I also had issue on the Pi (RPi 1 B 256MB Ram) that I needed a proxy to fix.)
Does the CPU get overloaded if you just turn off libstagefright? What doesn't work if you do? (I don't even know what it does.)

I've tried turning off libstagefright on my FireTVStick and it seems to work most of the time - occasionally the audio and picture go out of sync on the BBC HD channels* and quick channel change fixes it for a while. Alas, as with Kodi on my Nexus 7 and Z1 Compact Kodi just exits on it's own occasionally (presumably memory management). With stagefright on the picture was awful (3-4 fps). This is with TVHeadend connected to a DVB-S2 Sat>IP Tuner (via HomePlugs), a DVB-T2 USB tuner and 2xDVB-T USB tuners.
I have to point out that I've used it massively as it's connected to the same TV as my media centre PC (was more interested in seeing if the stick would be a viable alternative for the Raspberry Pi in the kitchen), and well the Fire TV Stick has only been available for two days!
* Not seen this on BBC ONE East Midlands SD or any other SD channel, or indeed Channel 4 HD. The BBC HD channels are rather high bit rate and didn't work properly on my Pi before over-clocking that so might be hitting the limits of what is possible here too.
The first time that I read about FireTV I was excited, so much power in a tiny box and I was hoping to replace my aging WDTV live for good. I'm one of those guys whom prefers local media and some quality so I'm not into the streaming bandwagon also broadband speed still a little expensive and slow in my country.
So with that in mind, I would like to ask you guys, do you believe that someday soon would be able to homebrew the fireTV for a modified OS which allow real local content (without the need for Plex).
I would like to know the possibilities for this in a near future, near future being before this year end for example.
Regards

You can do that with Kodi no need for Plex unless you really like plex for example : SMB,DLNA (I use my nas server via SMB) plenty of ways
Oh no, no DLNA please. Tried several times with different options and there's always an issue with subtitles. I really like the WDTV but feels like slow to many times.

I don't think we understand what you meant by "a modified OS which allow real local content (without the need for Plex)." Do you wish to connect a USB hard drive and store your files there? You can do that if your Fire TV is rooted. I believe what others were saying is that you don't need plex at all since Kodi (XBMC) can stream files locally or over a network without the need for transcoding. Usually people need plex because the device doesn't support the right codecs or doesn't have the processing speed. (Roku for example.) The Kodi app can handle pretty much any video format you throw at it, so no need for plex. Just point it to a SMB, NFS, or DLNA server and it just works.
Sorry, my bad English as Always. Image that I could be able to load on a FireTV a custom version of Android or something else, which transforms the firetv in a local media server ala WDTV and also support to apps like Netflix
If I understand you correctly, you're going to want to run a variant of XBMC - either kodi or SPMC.
Side load SPMC and see if it works for you.
Do you have the ability to root? You cannot add external USB HDD directly to the fire TV without root. However, you can add a USB HDD to your computer and share it to your fire TV for playback.

I'm thinking you want the fire TV to store local media files via USB HDD and you want it to act as a server as well for your other devices.
The answer is yes, BUT you MUST BE ROOTED. AND rootable fire TVs are getting harder to come by so if you're in the US I'd start looking now at bestbuy and staples.
If you're not in the US you can't get a rootable one in stores. EBay might be your only chance and you will pay a lot more. If craigslist is an option, I've found items to run cheaper there but of course there is less options and more traveling on your part.
Running fire tv as a server is useless it has 8gb of storage.. without root it's even worse.. nas server is best and easiest and most comfortable option. I also have Samsung home sync before I got fire tv it has 1tb drive I also have root on it but it's almost useless no netflix, hulu nothing.

Anyone else getting the "guide" grayed out in the slingplayer app? Is there any fix to this? Is it just crappy programming on the part of slingbox?

The second link in that quote is the last version released of the "Slingplayer for Fire TV" v3.0.9. The same reviews. That last update is from Jun 28, 2016 with support for FireOS v5.2.1.0. Exactly the same as your link. Even the ASIN # matches.

Figured out that if it doesn't "fully support" certain cable boxes it will wither gray out the Guide and/or PVR options. Personally I'd prefer the option to show the Slingbox overlay guide, rather than trying to leverage the devices native guide, which is too slow and sluggish to be usable.

It's SlingMedia being stupid again. I have two Fire Sticks, a 1st Gen and a 2nd Gen, and a Slingbox 350 with great upload. I used to be able to get all the controls on the 2nd Gen, then Sling "did something" and now like others have stated the only controls I now get are "Quality", "Disconnect" and a couple others but nothing you can use to control the SB with.
But the 1st Gen? Works perfectly, all the controls are there, everything works going to the exact same Slingbox 350. I haven't checked to see if there's a difference between the 1st-Gen and 2nd-Gen's app versions, so maybe that's it. But in any case, SlingMedia has always been kind of ****ty when it comes to support so I don't expect this to ever be fixed.
virtualadam1 : Yhea, I got this problem, as my provider is Videotron in Quebec,Canada. I thing the problem is the country you choose for your slingbox as any of the Canadian provider I try didn't give me access to than ''Guide'' and ''DVR'' option. I have a slingbox 500 connect to a Cisco 8642 box with Videotron but to make all the feature work I need to choose US as a country and 33060 as zip code + Comcast as provider. Now everything work perfectly with FIRE TV only. Any other stick or apps will give me the guide from comcast.
Update: Apparently somehow not being able to see all the remote-control buttons in the Slingbox Player for Fire TV app is an issue with only the 2nd-gen Fire TV Stick; if I run the app (same Amazon account, same SP App version) on a 1st-gen Fire TV Box, a 1st-gen Fire TV stick or the new 4K Fire TV dongle, the buttons all show up.
One other thing to note is that on all the Fire devices that the Slingplayer app works fully on, in "Settings->Display->Scale" you can adjust the picture size for overscan, which is something only the 2nd-Gen Fire Stick, the only one without all the SP buttons, can't adjust (it gives a lame message about "Fix your TV's settings instead", which is useless in places like hotels, or TVs w/o aspect ratio controls or where overscan can't be otherwise be adjusted).
can someone repost valid links pls?
Hey there,
I have my shield (16GB 2017 version) for quite a while now, but I feel like I'm not using it to it's full potential.
Right now what I did is: Install Kodi and use Kodi... and that works as there is nothing wrong with Kodi. But why work with Android TV if the first thing I do is install a different media system?
So how to get the features I use from Kodi moved out of .. euh.. Kodi? Like I use IPTV, (DL'd) movies, (DL'd) series. I can imagine with the channels system in Android TV the same "experience" can be achieved. Like how do I make a "channel" based on a share in my network? And how to add "information" as Kodi has (so description, thumbnails, etc etc), EPG information for my IPTV, and stuff like that.
Furthermore, the channels also bug me (2 edged sword I guess). Some part of NVidia/Android wants to force themselves on me.. suggested channels always come back up no matter how often I disable them in the settings. Is there a way to just remove all channels except the ones I use? And I mean physically remove so that they never ever pop back up again, unless I hard-reinstall them. (and yes I'm rooted)
Lastly the bluetooth range bugs me, I've read through all the guides and yes they do work, but the range is still mediocre. Now I am looking at the hardware mod to add a 2.4Ghz antenna now is my soldering .. terrible to say the least, but I'll figure that out, but is there a more clear "guide" out there on how to open the shield and stuff like that?
Anyhoo thx for any information
Android TV by itself is not a media player. You can use google's media player if you wish , but don't expect it to be better than kodi. You can have kodi show whatever you want on the Android homepage , look at this : https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=332589 I use NEXTpvr to handle my IPTV on kodi, but it requires a pc that is running next pvr. Kodi has numerous IPTV addons for you to choose from. I am not sure how you've disabled the channels you don't want to see , but those that I have disabled have never showed up again. The only channels displayed on my shield are the Apps channel and Netflix, everything else is removed. A typical class 2 bluetooth will only have a 10 meter range (33 feet) and it's even less with interference and all the other 2.4 ghz signals around (Wifi , cordless phones , etc) so short range is perfectly normal. Youtube has a bunch of videos on how to disassemble your shield. Has for soldering skills , find a crap piece of electronics somewhere and pratice soldering on this before you attempt to solder in your shield if you have no experience.
All this info was easily found using your favorite search engine.. Probably why nobody bothered to answer you..

Try to see if the bios has any way to set HDD mode to AHCI
Just tried this on a Chromebox CN60 (Celeron 2955U) and it boots and works quite 'ok'.
Things that don't work, that make it unusable for me:
Nothing related to video playback works, tried PLEX and YouTube
Wi-Fi networks get detected but joining them doesn't work
Bluetooth doesn't seem to work, my BT remote gets detected by my Phone and MacBook Pro but it doesn't get detected by the chromebox
Seems promising, if this issues gets addressed, I'll use it for sure, I just care about PLEX streaming
Thanks for your work!
