Screen on time - OnePlus 8 Real Life Review

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the OnePlus 8 before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Pretty impressed with battery life. And that was with heavy usage : installation of a lot of apps/mods, downloads through games, videos (especially 1h under direct sunlight).
I know it's not representative of a normal day because of the quarantine but I found it really good.

Can anyone else post screenshots? In the YouTube reviews they indicate very different battery consumption among them. 5:30 some, others 8:30

Will post more screenshots after more usage...

Battery life and charging cycle question
Hey Buddy,
May I ask how do you charge your OnePlus 8 phone? All the way to 100% or less? Do you keep it charging on even if its at 100?

Slightly over 4 hours of SOT with 50% battery left.
Impressive and slightly better than what I was getting on my 8 Pro.

Not bad. I'm also using xXx Magisk and ElementalX Kernel.

It depends on which apps you have installed and how you use them. Therefore, results will vary from person to person. To give you some guidelines, this is what I do:
I use GPS and location services sparingly instead of leaving them on
Google app and Google Assistant are disabled, along with some Google analytics
I use a Chromium-based web browser, such as Kiwi instead of Chrome itself
I debloat unused apps that would otherwise just sit there, wasting space
I typically charge the phone to full while it's off and uninterrupted
Touchboost is disabled
Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot. I took some of your tips without impacting what I expect from the phone and it made quite a difference. I had too many apps that I was simply not using. And some applications that were polling my location too much for no reason. I'm also using dark mode as I'm actually enjoying it. I almost didn't change anything but it really shows that if you do some minor tweaks and remove aps you're not using you end up with enough battery to last a full day comfortably.
Really surprised. Attaching my new SOT.
This was a more demanding usage of the phone than my previous post but surprisingly I got 30% more battery then before.
And this while playing COD for almost half an hour.:victory:

SoT is just pefect. And don't worry it's the same everywhere, look :

I think something wrong is going on,poor SOT,never had I pass 5.5 hours of SOT.

Not the longest SOT but I can easily stay multiple days on one charge when using my phone 2-3 hours a day. The flat parts in the plot are the nights when my phone was on airplane mode.
I also had some pretty good experiences while using my phone as a hotspot. This used to drain the batteries of my previous phones quickly but with the OP8 I can easily share connection 2-3 hours and still have the battery last me at least for the day. (Not included in the screenshot)

One plus 8
I get abt 10 hrs

I get abt 10 hrs

My last post was quite poor in infos so I'll detail more this time. Using it one day, you can have up to 10h SoT, using it throughout the days will give you around 8 hours SoT.
I've done two things: used my phone for two days of normal use (at home, playing videogames for about 2h a day because I had no friends to hang out with :crying and got three days of lite use (1h gaming per day or less because I had friends this time :victory, 7h SoT
To sum up: using it over the days will reduce SoT, but overall the battery is really good
Here some pics :

Double post

I dont know if it is normal, or not. But forexample, i chatge phone OP8 full, and i use it, lets say until 50% of battery, then i connect phone to PC to transfer some files. and if i check after battery it said that it is full charged 5 min before, and it stay 50%

Battery issues.

Hi all. Had my gnex for about 3 months. Rooted her when I got it. Currently running Francos kernel with AOKP ms4. The battery life is ****. Maybe 3-4 hours on heavy usage. Also. It believes its always plugged into charge. Though thats only been happening for 2-3 weeks. What would be the cause of this and fixes. I have tried multiple batteries. The stock and an 1950mah one. Both yielding the same result, no difference in battery capacity. I use cpuspy and I believe it is going into deep sleep. Thankyou
Adam
3-4 hours of heavy usage is not abnormal. Reading the franco kernel thread, I see most people are getting less than 4 hours of screen time or 5 hours if easy screen use such as ebook reading.
Regarding "It believes its always plugged into charge.", can you give some symptoms?
Really? I've seen screenshots with people pulling 2 days out. Obviously not browsing YouTube l day but I don't even get half that on idle.

This. Completely stock, "heavy" (i.e. not reading text on black background) usage seems to kill the battery in around 3 hours. In my experience, this is about right for web browsing. Of course, this increases if I'm viewing a darker screen.
GSM Arena did a test: http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-ga...y-tested-results-come-out-disappointing-test/
Would be interested to see the screenshots of 2 days worth of usage. Would be more interested to see screen-on time for these.

Sometimes I'll have a streak of only really using my phone for texting and it'll go for >2 days. Idle drain is really minimal if you reign in what apps can run in the background and you're in good reception areas. If you get your phone set up right it would be draining close to 1% per hour when not being used. Do the math and truly light usage could easily go for 3 days or so.
The trouble is that everyone has their own idea of what constitutes heavy/moderate/light use (is that a lot of texting and a little bit of web browsing? A little gaming and a lot of email writing?), so unexplained reports of "my battery lasted for this long!" are pretty useless to everyone.

Battery Saving Guide (Root)

This is just a simple guide that made my LG G4's battery life double (No exaggeration) after root. Please let me know of any other ways people have been saving battery since rooting their phone, and I'll happily update the original post with any suggestions and I am completely open to criticism and comments.
1. Greenify
-Greenify doesn't let apps use your battery in the background, and depending on how many power eating apps you have, the more of a dramatic increase in battery life you'll see.
-There are more advanced options, which you need Xposed Framework for, but the regular root options should work fine for most users.
Link- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify&hl=en
2. CPU Tweaking Apps (Ex. SetCPU)
-One of the first things I recommend doing once you download this app is to set the CPU governor to "powersave". I haven't seen any drop in performance, and I definitely think it is well worth giving a try.
-Another thing you can do is underclock your CPU, but after doing this I started to see lag around the UI, without a significant enough battery difference, but it won't hurt to give a try.
-A great app I found was QuadCoreManager, which has a feature that turns all cores off except for 1 while the screen is off, which saves a lot of battery in standby since the phone doesn't need all 6 cores to run without the screen on
SetCPU- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mhuang.overclocking&hl=en
QCM- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=seaskyways.quadcoremanagerplus&hl=en
Wifi Scan Interval
-If anyone knows a better way to do this please tell me, but there is an app called Pimp My Rom that can alter this setting. It basically just changes how often your device scans for wifi, which is a battery drainer for sure. This app hasn't been updated in a while, and is pretty buggy, but it gets the job done.
Pimp My Rom- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androguide.pimpmyrom&hl=en
Boosters Plus Batterysaver PRO
-This app is $6.99, so it clearly isn't for everyone, but I can tell you that the battery saving feature in this app is no joke. Most of the apps on the play store I've tried didn't work, or hindered performance. The app basically makes android run more efficiently, and it's made my SOT go from 3-3 1/2 hours to getting 6 hours. A friend of mine recommended it to me and I was a little skeptical but I am happy I spent the money on it. It also comes with some performance enhancing options, an internet booster, and a digitizer booster. These additional things actually do work, but in a much less dramatic way when compared to the battery saver feature. After first enabling it, I got 56 minutes of screen on time, and I dropped 10%.
Link- https://play.google.com/store/apps/...apps.android.boosterplusbatterysaverpro&hl=en
Again, please let me know anything I left out, and tell me what I should add to the list since I probably forgot some things. I'm not looking to take credit for anyone else's finds, so I'll be sure to add the username of the contributors of this guide to the OP. I hope this was a good start, and I can't wait to see how everyone else has improved their G4.
Using the powersave governor basically locks your phone to the slowest clockspeed it is capable of running at, and it does indeed introduce a lot of lag. The biggest problem with that is usually wake up times is significantly increased, leading to missed calls while you wait for the phone to respond after trying to accept.
I do agree that Greenify is a great tool, especially the premium add-on. SetCPU used to be big years ago, but these days most kernel devs say underclocking or undervolting is useless.
For wifi scan interval you can add this line to your build prop and enter the value you desire (in seconds)
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=180
Change 180 to whatever you feel is appropriate for you
Greenify can be helpful, or you can make your own script for renicing apps. What we really need to see is a utility like "cpulimit" in Linux. Limiting the amount of cores a process like Chrome can use will go a long way. I'll download the source and see if I can cross compile it for Android. There may be an issue of launching app through it, but I think it would work out if the apps were launched via am.
As far as optimizations go with the phone, the biggest power saver I've seen was from undervolting the display voltage regulator on some Nexus phones. With some custom kernels, we might have this ability.
thanx alot

It never actually got to 6 hours because I charge my phone every day and it has yet to die on me in one day. I usually end the day at around 50% with about 3 hours of screen on time, so using that, I figure 6 hours if you let it get to 0%. Here's my screenshot where I end the day with 41% and 3 1/2 hours of SOT http://imgur.com/Nma3MEh

Maximizing SOT to get 8+ hours

Hi Guys,
I have checked the real-life reviews about the SOT and I see lots of people posting a SOT of 8+ hours.
Personally I get about 6 hours consistently every time but never was able to get these miracle numbers. Are you people just lowering your brightness to the lowest point and having battery saver on all time to be able to show off? or is there some magic going on?
Anyways, if anyone has tips regarding maximizing the SOT without giving up to many features I'd be happy to know (e.g. WiFi scanning off or on, disabling location tracking etc.). I don't want to root my beautiful device .. yet .
Thanks! Never Settle!
5 to 6 hours is average with moderate usage. 4 to 5 hours is with heavy usage like GPS and YouTube. 7+ hours would be with minimal usage plus few tweaking like dark theme and wallpaper turn off location and data. It all comes down to how you use the phone. I have rooted my phone with magisk and using greenify and Google play services doze module it gives me excellent battery life. 2 days of usage with single charge get about 5+ hours of sot. Which is very surprising

I'm guessing they don't use battery draining apps like Snapchat and Facebook. I also turned off raise to wake and ambiant display and got way more sot. I went from 4 to over 5.
I used to get 8-9 hours on my OP5 and I'm averaging 7-7.5 on this 5T. Maybe its a ROM thing or maybe the taller screen is playing a role, either way I don't mind since 7 or so hours is still really good for my needs

Just like @big_b0sss said, it all depends on how you use your phone. When I wanted to check sot , I used it very frequently by browsing, games , YouTube etc and I got around 8 hrs sot with about 15% battery still left. But that's not how I really use my phone, with my normal use , I charge my phone when it's at about 30% and when I do it's every 2 days and sot at about 4-5 hrs which is absolutely fine for me.
I get 7-8 hrs with easy use(messaging, social media, browsing) on 80 percent wifi and 20 mobile data.
Stock kernel or custom?
Using widgets and a lot of other things with sensors will cause battery drain too, I only get about 4hrs but it does last all day
I get approx 7 hrs of sot with moderate usage. No root, deep clear in recents, force stop messenger and whatsapp, location off wifi scanning off, automatic brightness.... I play shadowgun online 1 hr, youtube and uc browser.....
I got 9 hours SOT. No limits ROM and franco kernel ?

Are you all sure that SOT isn't calculated also while displaying fingerprint area? I didn't test it yet, but it probably also counts sot, so the displayed parameter may show bs.
hmm I don't know, could be.
I used chrome a lot but not sure if it adds up to 7h. I mainly used the phone in bed with lights turned off so the brightness was at lowest setting the most of the time...
I might disable the fingerprint display if thats possible an post another screenshot.
I disabled some sensors with an xposed module and have the feeling that the battery lasts a bit longer since that.
Can give u a list of disabled sensors if you are interested.

SOT SOT SOT - Am I going insane, or am I not(e)?

Well at least I still have my (shady) sense of humor.
Hey guys.
2 weeks with the Note 10+, 256GB/12GB - Exynos. I keep seeing those wonderful SOT reports. 8 hours, 9 hours, 10 hours! I'm not even talking about those posting screenshots of 12-14 hours...
They all use WQHD. They all use Facebook. They even use youtube and netflix, on wi-fi and on mobile with more than 50% brightness, and they all get at worst 8 hours of Screen on time.
Little me, on the other hand, uses mostly whatsapp and text, reduce his brightness when possible, check for hungry apps all the time, yet even on Airplane mode, I barely get get to 0% with 5 hours of SOT.
What am I missing? What is the magic trick? Is it possible that I'm having some sort of a hardware failure? Bad luck?
Don't get me wrong, 5 hours of sot, compared to my dying and evil LG G4 is still amazing, but I just can't wrap my head around this difference between exactly the same devices, this huge difference.
Let there be light
and sot.
in the same boat as you are my friend.. note 10 + exynos is a ****ter..

Don't worry mate, those 8,9,10 hours of SOT are for people who watch lots of Videos like YouTube etc on their device and seldom use camera or do gaming on their Phone. SOT is very subjective and differs from person to person. I get 5 to 6 hours of SOT myself and is pretty happy with it
As others said it's hard to compare, for example weak cell/wifi signal can discharge battery pretty fast even with screen off. After saying that, you should disable everything you can that you don't use. Also, forget SOT, see how much your phone discharges overnight when it's not in use. For example charge before sleep to 100%, wake up and see what's the charge after 6-8 hours of standby. If it's less than 94-92 %, then you may have rogue app than runs down your battery and finding it and fixing it may help you a lot.

No, it is not
Anything over 5 hours is not that bad imo! However, i would expect that the note 10 plus should easily be hitting 6 hours minimum for the majority of users depending on there usage! I have literally only got my hands on my device today and after about 30 minutes use plus a software update it has dropped just 6%
my .2 cents , if your phone can last long enough for you to achieve what ever you want to do achieve in day and without you running behind a charger then you got yourself a keeper .
so don't worry about SOT , standby time ... use your phone to its fullest extent and enjoy it

Living in a small country, compared to some people who use the same network in the same city (Maybe 5km from each other). Obviously, it's still not a purely scientific comparison, but it's something/
I used to wonder why there was a big difference between my battery performance and the ones I see on the net. Until I went to Taiwan for a vacation. My sucky battery phone then suddenly lasted the whole day. And that was with constant gps usage, constant checking, messaging, googling, etc.
I think the network strength and consistency is the biggest determinant of battery life given the same usage patterns. I live in the Philippines where the signal is not great which is probably why i get a lousy battery life compared to others.
However, the Note 10+ is giving me the best ever battery life ever. Out of all the phones I've owned, this is the only phone to actually surpass the 5 hour screen on time mark.

Signal strength affecting battery life makes sense, I have heard that before, but I have tried going a full day with just Wi-Fi, airport mode and no sim installed, and I got just the same results, so I guess that in my case, it's not related (sadly).
During my normal daily use, at the end of day I end with SOT of 3 to 5 hrs and 65-45% battery left. So absolutely I can get 8-10 hrs and this is with highest screen resolution, 50% brightness, GPS, BT, NFC, AOD and Edge screen on. You may have rogue apps running in the background and using your battery, did you check under settings/device care/ battery what is using your power, even if it's not very accurate, could give you some hints.
I check it constantly, no rogue apps whatsoever. I even did a factory reset, installing only whatsapp and disabling some Samsung apps, yet I still can't reach more than 5 hours of SOT, in almost "lab clean" conditions. Honestly, it's driving me mad.
How much do you loose overnight, when phone is not used at all. It should be no more than 0.5 to 1% per hr. Also force stop whatsup for few hours, maybe is searching and updating too often. I know what you mean, I had a phone couple yrs ago, wouldn't last whole day even if not used, drove me crazy until found out I changed some obscure setting in wifi before and forgot about it, once I reversed that setting phone went back to normal 0.5% per hour (it was discharging 10% per hour even not used before fix).

The Exynos SoC is garbage.
I learned the hard way with the Galaxy S10+. I thought to myself: "I'll buy the Exynos version so I can have an unlocked bootloader and enjoy custom ROM's and all the good stuff!" Little did I know, it's tough to enjoy the good stuff with such crap battery life.
Snapdragon users of the S10+ were reporting amazing battery life, meanwhile I couldn't get 4 hours of SoT with very careful use. I decided not to make the same error with the Note 10+ and ordered it with a Snapdragon SoC. I can happily report 7-8 hours of SoT and it was only getting better. I'm back on the OnePlus 7 Pro because I may return the Note 10+ for the Galaxy Fold, but I am leaning towards keeping it because the camera is so damned good.
Either way, never buy an Exynos phone. I enjoyed my S8+ with the Exynos chipset, but made a grave error with the S10+. Avoid at all costs if you can. If you need the radio bands that only the Exynos version has - look into getting a battery case because you'll need it.
Good luck Exynos users
