[Q] Galaxy Tab 10.1 VGA Adapter

I'm waiting for Galaxy Tab 10.1 to be released in order to buy one, but I need to know is there any idea if there is a VGA adapter to connect it to TV via VGA and display presentations on TV. I know that there is HDMI Adapter, but for iPAD2 there is a VGA adapter.

You could get an HDMI > DVI adaptor then use a DVI > VGA adaptor.

Im not sure that would work.
There are (at least) 2 specs for DVI - DVI-A (Analogue) and DVI-D (Digital) .
HDMI > DVI-D is possible, but AFAIK, HDMI > DVI-A is not, since the output device (your Tab) would need to support analogue signals. For the same reason, you wouldn't be able use a HDMI > VGA adapter.
Im almost certain that the tab does not support analogue timings but you never know.
If it's for work and you're not spending your own money, see if they will buy a converter box for "all those people" who need to use it That's the only way to be sure it will work.

There already exists a cable that plugs into the Samsung proprietary port that outputs an analogue signal through a composite video connector (and stereo RCA plugs for audio). Samsung reps have confirmed that this cable, released for the original Galaxy Tab, will work 100% with the 10.1v and 10.1 (by implication probably the 8.9 too).

Composite to VGA won't work as it has different timings.
Best you can do is something that converts HDMI to VGA by some integrated solution, e.g., HDfury - HDMI to VGA cable, see their forum. Unfortunately you need another extra adaptor to fit the propriatory Galaxy connector. Plus extra power supply for the HDfury (and probably for the Galaxy Tab as well).
This is a deal breaker for all teachers and students that often have to show their content over VGA beamer. Bummer.

But failing this basic pre-requisite for Corporate environment is a fail in my book and would force me to put my money on the iPad2 despite the shortcomings(including the no-jailbreak current status). Don't get me wrong, I have no trolling intention: I have simple business needs that must be met...
So if you know of any such HC tablet, please let us know.

And you are not the only one. I'm getting 10.1v tomorrow, and hoping that there will be VGA adapter available one day. But for time being HDMI will do.

I just bought one too and I'm really pissed off there's no way to use it for work
even the ipad can output vga :S

i was able to get "something" using HP's hdmi -> vga adapter
Unfortunately, green was missing. Could have been the cable provided locally. If someone is successful in connecting to a VGA projector, let me know.
[Even with proper colors, the need for two dongles and AC power make the GT unsuitable for presentations.]

Yes. I could get something on the projector. Colors were off. I didn't have the time to check all connections. But even if it were working, having to rely on AC to power the HDMI dongle makes little sense.
In a pinch, you may want to use http://app.mightymeeting.com/index.html . You'll need a local machine and decent internet connectivity, but you gain mobility in the room and might score wow-points. They have an android app but it doesn't work on honeycomb. You have to start the meeting through their website.
In real life it remains a risky proposition. I could get away with it (I teach. Easy to switch to local machine if something goes wrong), but would never rely on such setup for a conference or other high stakes presentation. I now routinely use mightymeeting with an iPad. MM can save a local version of the presentation file. Never failed. Extremely convenient.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried using the smart dock with the Note 8.0
Note II is really similar, so I would hope that the Note 8.0 will work
The Samsung site says Note II and Galaxy IV so now I'm a little iffy.
The MHL and OTG adapters are pretty universal, but I can only use one at a time
2 usb ports plus the HDMI would be great for me at the office since I can plug in the tab and have it running on my 2nd monitor (along with KB and mouse)

Are you able to put the Note 8.0 into landscape when using the Smart Dock? Also, is the device stable enough to be written upon with S-pen while docked?
BTW, is there any other way to get USB- OTG and HDMI functionality simultaneously? (sans the Smart Dock)

I have the Smart Dock for my Note II and it works well. I haven't received my Int'l 3G Note 8.0 yet to test it, but it's good to hear that others have it working.
Since the Smart Dock holds both devices in Portrait orientation, it will not automatically put the display in Landscape mode unless you are playing a video. You would have to use a 3rd party app such as "Orientation Control".
I doubt you could write on the Note 8.0's screen successfully while in the dock. The dock is roughly 3" square and is not heavy enough to stabilize the tab for anything but very light screen taps or swipes. The device is not secured in the dock other than the by microUSB connector. The device just rests in the dock under its own weight, vertically.
The Smart Dock is not made to hold the device physically in a Landscape orientation. I'm not sure if a microUSB-to-microUSB extension cable would work to retain the functions and allow a separate landscape "holder" or case/cover to be used without the actual Smart Dock attached? Hmmm...
Oh, AFAIK, and I've researched fairly thoroughly, I couldn't find any other way to achieve HDMI, Audio, and USB OTG simultaneously. You might be able to use the Allcast Media Hub for wireless HDMI & Audio, and then connect a USB OTG adapter to the Note 8.0's microUSB/MHL port, but I haven't tested that.

Thanks, it was very helpful. I was thinking of getting the Smart Dock in lieu of the HDMI adapter. USB-OTG + HDMI at same time isn't much of a necessity for me. HDMI is still primary for me. Audio, when required could be used from the 3.5 mm jack.
Guess, it would be better to go for the HDMI adapter.
BTW, do you have any experience on HDMI to VGA converters?Do they work well? Actually I need to hook up the Note 8.0 to a VGA projector?

VGA doesn't carry Audio signals, so you would most likely need a unit that would extract the audio from the HDMI as well as the Video signal, and then route the Audio to a separate connector/cable. I have seen some VGA cables that also have a 3.5mm Stereo audio plug at each end, so you can hook up the audio output from your PC's sound card and plug it into the 3.5mm audio Jack on most video projectors. Yes, I have seen some which can extract audio from the HDMI feed.
There are a number of listings on eBay in my country. I would love to get it from a reliable website, but most of them are overseas and the customs department in India makes it a lot of hassle.
I ordered a display adapter from dx.com once. No problems with website or the product, but it was held up for a month at the customs office and finally I had to pay a 50% duty as well.

Some issues, having to repower up the dock for usb to work after tablet is inserted.
And I am not having any sound come out of the 3.5 jack on the back of the dock.
Also it I am using a HDMI to DVI adaptor for my moniter and I am using an orentation control app with it.
Wish it worked with my Galaxy s3.

Is your Note 8.0 battery level above 80% when you put it in the dock? If not, the tablet will draw too much power from the power adapter just to CHARGE the tablet, and the USB ports do not have sufficient power. If your tablet or phone battery is over 80%, this isn't a problem and you shouldn't have to "re-Dock" it to get the USB ports to work. Samsung should have made the power adapter more powerful (3 or 4 amps).
To get audio output from the 3.5mm rear Jack, you need to go into SETTINGS > ACCESSORY > AUDIO OUTPUT MODE, and Check the box for "Use External Speakers when device is Docked".

I thought I had answered your Portrait/Landscape question in paragraphs 3 & 4 of Post #4? Read through it again. The smart dock does not hold the tablet in a Landscape (horizontal) orientation at all. You could possibly use a case or cover on the Note 8.0 that would hold it in landscape, or use Samsung's Note 8.0 Car Mount and then connect the tablet to the Smart Dock with a 11-pin Male-to-Female micro-USB extension cable.

Yes, I had already read your post.
But the other member claimed to have already used it with the Note8, whereas you told me that you were still expecting your note 8, so I was keen to know more about the actual experience of a user.
BTW, Do you know if 11 pin USB extension cables are available?

Take a look at a picture of the smart dock, or look at nztechfreak's YouTube review of it. Just from its physical size and design there is no way that the Smart Dock can support or hold a tablet in a Landscape or horizontal position when on a desk/flat surface...or any surface.
For reference, I just tried my Note II in the Smart Dock with the phone and dock laying on its side. The dock will hold the Note II in landscape position, but the phone is at a perfect 90° angle to the table's surface, which makes it hard to use the touchscreen, and it will easily become undocked, as there is no pressure or weight to secure the device. And there is nothing directly behind the phone to keep it from moving or sliding back when you press the screen. Also, at least one USB port will be inaccessible because it or they will be against the table's surface when the dock is laying on its side. This dock was simply made to only hold a PHONE (either the Note II, SGS3, or SGS4) in a vertical Portrait position. It's obvious from the design that it was not made for landscape use whatsoever. It just happens to hold the Note II on its side because the dock is the same width as the phone.
I don't believe that Samsung will ever make a LANDSCAPE Desk dock for the Note 8.0. It is clear from its general design that Samsung intended this tablet to be used as a "Notepad" in a Portrait (vertical) orientation. The only odd exception is the position of the IR Blaster on the side (the SGS4 IR Blaster is on the top). I would definitely like a landscape desk dock as well, but I'm not convinced that it would be practical for this particular tablet. However, there is a car/windshield mount listed on Samsung's web site that looks like it will hold the tablet in landscape mode.
I'm searching for the extension cables now and will post here if & when I find them.

I never tried the S-Pen while in the dock. Also I tried the settings mentioned above to get the 3.5 sound to work, but no luck.
I took it back, I'll wait for a proper one to come out, or try with the wifi all share hub and build somthing that way.

If I hook up USB+charger and THEN the HDMI, it works. For some reason (lack of power???) it won't accept a flash drive if I plug a hub in and the flash drive into that. (I use a Bluetooth keyboard and a USB mouse.)
Haven't bit the bullet on the official smart dock yet though :'(.

Tab S3 as upgrade to Note 10.1 2014 - Your opinions?

The upcoming Tab S3 is the first tablet that I've seen that seems like it would be a good replacement / upgrade for the Note 10.1 2014.
Here are some PROs and CONs as I see it:
PRO:
- battery life
- processor
- "HDR"
- USB-C
- Fingerprint Sensor
- Low weight
- look / feel
- magnetic keyboard option
- 4096 levels pressure sensitivity
- larger rubberized s-pen
CON:
- portrait button orientation
- price
- pen does not fit inside tablet
- pen doesn't have eraser (not important for most, but leaves me using old pens that don't take advantage of the heightened pressure sensitivity)
- Big one: early reviews suggest s-pen input lag
The main con for me is really that custom ROMs have made my Note snappy enough that I don't feel like I really need to upgrade (aside from my aging battery life). With 7.1.1 ROMS (currently on LiquidDeath, but Lineage is great, too) I finally don't get s-pen lag when drawing or writing and would be frustrated to have to deal with that again.
I don't think I can justify the expense right now, but if I had the cash this would seem like a solid choice. Opinions?

I agree with everything you've listed.
I was a bit worried about losing screen size so I calculated some stuff.
Note: 8.6 x 5.4in - 46.44 sq in
Tab: 7.8 x 5.8in - 45.24 sq in
The tab loses a bit of length but gains it back in width. Not going to be as big for widescreen movies and such but hopefully not too bad.
I'm also not a fan of the reduced PPI but I'm going to Best Buy sometime to compare.
The pen not fitting inside is a big issue since it's easy for me to lose them (and the replacement is $60). I would probably put something on its belt clip to keep it attached to me.
However, the pen's gained size may feel nicer in the hand and make it more difficult to lose.
We'll get ROMs eventually. Except if the bootloader is tied down like on the S7 (is it?)

IMO it has 3 big cons not listed here.
Aspect ratio. It's bad for for android. Most iOS apps are optimized for 4:3, so it's a good fit for iPad. Most android apps actually look bad on 4:3 (used Mi tab, apps didn't look good). 4:3 is bad for media consumption. Websites are optimized for widescreen.
Lack of MHL is a big con for me too. I frequently use my tablet as my portable computer (booting linux) or portable media center. I don't find wireless a good alternative (things like chromecast), too much input lag and requires live Internet connection most of the times.
The smaller battery. Sure Note 10.1 has a more power hungry screen and SoC but the difference in battery capacity is so great that with a power efficient rom you always get better autonomy with Note 10.1

Does it not support DisplayPort over USB-C? If not, on Reddit there is a guy with a solution that works for the pixel, which also doesn't support DP over USB-C and that may work. Can't post the link since I'm still new but you can google "google pixel is wired output possible" to find the post.
Went to Best Buy recently and tried it. Couldn't do much since it was locked in demo mode (so I couldn't see how badly apps handle the 4:3 screen) but it seemed like a nice device.
Have you guys seen the Chromebook Plus/Pro? It's a Samsung Chromebook with an Spen, Android app support, and it folds into a tablet. It supports DP over USB-C. Downside is no button on pen. Might be a better fit if you are using the tablet as a portable computer and it will run Linux even better than the tab.

I think only S8 supports video output over usb C at this point. Display output over usb 3 (as per the reddit page) is buggy at best. Tried it to one of my laptops, it's good for quick work, I wouldn't trust it for real work.
Chrome book plus is better for work. But an ultrabook is even better.
It's very bad as a tablet though. I've found out that the further away we are from 500 grams / 1 lbr mark the less people use the said device as a tablet. There is a reason , most books do not weigh more than 1lbr for easier reading. A tablet plays a similar role, the heavier it is the more unusable. Note 10.1 2014 is on the heavy side (would prefer if it had 100 less grams) but still very usable. 1KG tablet/laptops are not though. You may make the occasional tablet use, but no way you get it in the couch for media viewing or reading, or on a trip as a handheld, pretty much why the 2in1 idea never flew (people find that they don't use them as tablets so prefer to go the ultrabook route all the way).

Question Desktop mode on Pixel 6/Pro?

My Pixel 6 Pro does not connect to an external monitor via UBC-C to HDMI cable (hope it's not an issue of my specific device). The video signal just doesn't transfer, and I get a black screen on the second monitor. I tried having a look at the dev settings but there seem not to be an option to enable/disable the feature, only to resize windows etc. Any tips?
(The cable worked fine with my previous Oneplus phone and with my friend's Samsung device)

You would need a DisplayLink dongle and the DisplayLink app, this is the only method to do video out on a Pixel

That's a great idea. Is miracast hardware built into the phone or just a software WiFi stack? I would like to Miracast from the pixel 6 pro.

It's software that relies on WiFi Direct. However Google practically pulled all Miracast support from Android in favour of Chromecast, so it will be quite the job to reimplement it even with a custom ROM.

I just want to vent regarding the lack of HDMI capabilities of the pixel 6 pro. I wanted to buy one of these to replace my landline. I wanted to display it via an HDMI dongle on my 4k tv, one with an ethernet port so I could use it as a hotspot/router and root it for call recording. It turns out that to do that, you have to purchase a special display link adapter (expensive) and you are limited to 1080p. So instead I purchased an inexpensive Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G. I ran it through an inexpensive hub that has HDMI and ethernet out. It has 3 usb 3.0 ports and I use one with a mouse. The freaking setup works like a computer, it is just slick. IT PUTS OUT 4K 30HZ RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. The pixel 6 pro has a few advantages like its on hold software and rootability. But the Samsung absoulutely smashes it when it comes to HDMI affordability. And don't even mention chromecast, it won't ethernet properly and wont do 4k. Chromecast is a joke, just buy a Samsung for HDMI. If you read the product page, you would've realised that the Pixel series has NEVER supported USB DisplayPort Alt Mode (which is what you'd need for direct HDMI connection), and DisplayLink is the only option.
You also don't have to buy the expensive adapters, there are DisplayLink HDMI adapters that cost only $30-ish.
You're also not limited to 1080p only, as there are 4K DisplayLink adapters (albeit more expensive).
You're also complaining about a $800+ phone you want to use as a LANDLINE, needing a $30-80 adapter to work with a TV.

@GivIn2It It's just a theory of mine for a long time, but I'll repeat it. I suspect (no evidence other than what's publicly known about Pixels versus Samsungs) that Google has a contract with Samsung where Samsung sells Google parts and/or manufacturing prowess for the Pixels, or sells them at a only mildly expensive price, in exchange for Google agreeing to not make the Pixels "too" competitive with Samsungs.
Of course, this idea of mine held more weight before Samsung started to make MicroSD slots rare or even just non-existent on their flagship devices (they keep them on the cheaper devices since cheaper devices commonly hardly include any significant internal storage space), but I think it's still a possibility. Who knows, though, I'm just guessing.
Google does depend on Samsung, so Samsung has all the weight to throw around.
I also cannot stand Samsung's Android implementation (up through and including the Note 10+). Hardware absolutely great. Software gets a 2 out of 10 from me.

I maintain that DisplayLink is overpriced BS. I would not consider anything not capable of 4k, all my monitors are 4k. Any phone I purchase will likely cost at least $800+, but why should I throw money away on accessories that are equally functional and way cheaper on alternate hardware? Google needs to listen, more people are using their phones on Hdmi. Wifi is finicky and unreliable, a cable is solid and trustworthy. And I don't have time to read everyone's stinking fine print on their product page. That info is well buried. I like stuff that just works, and works well, like my Samsung setup. I can't find anything on this pixel that will reliably put its screen on my tv, anydesk, teamviewer, chromecast, all fail regularly, and are low res too boot.

Question Samsung second screen feature for Fold 3

I saw that Galaxy Tab 8 has a feature that you can use it as a second screen on windows 10/11.

Nice to see I'm not the only one that wants that feature on the fold. I've been searching for a way to bring it to the fold 3 but have been unsuccessful. The only thing I've found is that second screen is a part of smart view

I second this request. The second screen on my S8 Ultra is literally amazing. The fold 3 is a natural step. The fold 3 is also missing an e sim capability that I think should be there and likely able to be unlocked via software update.
