Internal memory filling up quickly without installing anything - Asus Zenfone 5Z Questions & Answers

Hello everyone,
I i've got a problem with my phone.
Recently the internal memory has filled up and I reset the phone. I thought it was because of the update to android 10 and some leftover data. But within a month the internal memory was full again. I didn't install any big apps after the initial setup after which I had about 40GB of free space.
In the beginning of March :
In settings i had 48GB of other apps, but when i selected all apps for removal, it said it would only free about 6GB.
So, does anyone know why the memory fills up by itself?
I had the same selection of apps on my old phone with 16GB of internal memory, and never had a problem.
For now i downgraded to android 9 and didn't install a backup. The phone is not rooted and i don't want to root in the near future.
Greetings from Germany

Do a reset before upgrading to Android 10 (.46 update preferably). See if it helps.

It didn't help.I reset before upgrade and reset after the upgrade. Then i downgraded again, reset and upgraded without a second reset.
But i managed to narrow down the problem. The storage fills up pretty much after installing a new app.
I installed 2 or 3 apps from Play Store, each about 50MB-100MB and it filled up about 10GB!
Started a new test, installed 2 Apps, right after installation it used up 180Mb. But if i look up the total size for both apps it says 62.51 MB and 86.68 MB, so only ~150MB.
Let's see how quick the storage fills up without installing any new apps.
Edit:
Well, i just updated from Version WW-100.10.107.70 2020/03/31 to the new june update Version WW-100.10.107.87 2020/06/01 and it seems the bug has been patched.
I now have only 24.55GB used memory instead of 51.47GB. Other apps now only takes up 7.9GB instead of 35GB :silly:
Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Low internal phone storage

I just got a notification that my internal phone storage memory is low (10mb left). My phone is only a few weeks old and I've installed maybe 20 apps, and I'm using the stock Telstra rom. I don't recall putting any large files or anything like that on my phone, I put all my photos/music/etc on the SD card. Is this normal? I have A LOT of apps installed on my Hero and I don't remember it ever having a problem with the internal memory.
Also, is there a way to install apps to the SD card? Or is it really only possible to have about 20 apps installed at a time before you have to delete some to make room for new ones?
The reason your Hero's internal memory doesn't run out as quickly as the Desire's is because the Desire's OS files are simply larger. I'm guessing this has something to do with the screen resolution being higher resulting in larger image files.
Anyway, if you want to install applications to SD card, you have 2 options:
1. Root
2. Wait for official Froyo update from HTC
Tips to free up some memory
Go to "Settings" > "Applications" > "Manage applications" > press "Menu" key > "Sort by size"
See what applications are taking up the most space and re-evaluate each application's worth to you. See if there's any one that you don't actually use so you can uninstall it.
Clear cache. The browser ,photo viewer, and maps comes into mind as applications that use up a lot of space for cache.
Soft reset your device occasionally. Doing so apparently initiates some sort of cleanup process. I've consistently recovered chunks of internal memory by simply doing an occasional soft reset. (Note: You'll need to shut down and and then restart. Doing the hardware key-combination or yanking the battery won't work)
Thanks. Is there an official Froyo update planned for anytime soon? Also how do you clear the cache?

Official word from HTC PR is Q3 for official Froyo update. Every other rumor you hear about it coming "in 2 weeks" is unsubstantiated. See following link

To clear cache got o "Settings" > "Applications" > "Manage applications". Go into the application you want to clear cache for. If you're allowed to clear the cache, the "Clear cache" button will be active.

I have a Hero with 1.5 and the 2.1 update was supposed to happen 6 months ago and still hasn't. So based on that, if they're announcing a 2.2 for the Desire in Q3 2010, I'm guessing it'll actually come out around Q2 2011. I guess I'll just have to uninstall some stuff

[Q] Memory management issues on pa3.99

I'm running PA3.99-RC2 on i9100 (nims11 release) with the gapps recommended for this release (gapps-jb-20130726-pa4.3). During the last weeks I've been seeing strange behavior on my internal memory. It started with app updates failing with "Insufficient storage available" error despite memory manager showed ample empty space available. I found a simple workaround to completely uninstall each program and to re-install them. This worked ok and curiously enough, it was was also possible to install completely new apps without problems while updates kept failing.
Few days ago I flashed in the latest version (20131031) and hoped it would solve the problem, but it only got worse. I started getting a persistent "Storage space is running out" message while the memory manager showed still more than 100M internal memory available. After this install, hhe memory warning, however, started to affect behavior and result in random memory-related errors in various apps, rendering my phone borderline useless, so this morning I backed up my stuff with Helium, did a clean vanilla re-install of the rom and gapps with a factory reset, but just after installing few important apps back, I'm getting the same persistent Storage space running out error again.
Strorage manager shows Total internal storage 1,97 GB, Apps 593MB, Cache 1,2MB, Available 184MB. The same is reflected at the graphical bar. At times the graphical bar, however, momentarily flashes to show a single gray bar which indicates like the memory was almost full. Via root shell I see about the same amount of free space, but the sytem volume total size is given only as 593MB, so I'm a little bit confused.
Any help would be appreciated.
Since this is device specific you should probably take it to Nims thread.

Frankly, this was my first idea, but apparently I'm not allowed to post there because I'm a new user
(I can imagine, though, why such a forum policy is in place)
In the meanwhile I managed to get my phone back somehow usable by doing yet another clean install and then not restoring the Helium backup, but only manually intalling the most essential programs I need daily like Chrome, Swype and Maps. Still, somehow a big bulk of my internal memory is mysteriously gone unaccessible for the OS.

How many GB's are left after a clean install of pre rooted rom and CWM?

I am trying to figure out if I may have left some files on my FireTV that I rooted and installed CWM awhile ago. I only have about 1gb left and am wondering if I left any unused files on my Fire TV.
I rooted then had to downgrade the rom to a earlier version to get CWM installed. I can't remember if I deleted the downgraded rom zip file or I may have left some unused files that is leaving no space on my fireTV.
What is the typical size of a FireTV with no extra apps installed yet? 4.5gb of 8gb?
Thanks.
Free Space.. after clean install
Yes, that's what I had. AFTV free space after clean install is about 4.5gb of 8. However, after xbmc and caching some apps, that free space quickly dwindled down to 3.5gb. Yikes!
I willl say that while rooting my device I did interrupt the stock OTA update, I hope this did not cause any phantom files. Is there a way to wipe the OTA update cache, just to be sure?

3GB free space wasn't enough for me.

So I restored my phone to stock after soft bricking it.
And after setting up all my apps & settings, everything was working 100%.
Then I uninstalled one-too-many system apps and it killed my framework.
So I restored a couple stock image IMG's and got things working fine again.
A couple hours later I was super happy with things, so I went ahead and copied all my music files from my computer onto the Pixel XL.
I left 3.1 GB of free space on the Pixel (32gb version) and went out for the night.
Quickly, I discovered that suddenly 3/4 of my installed apps would force close when opening them. At first I thought my attempt to restore IMG's was the issue. I tried rebooting, wiping app cache, uninstall/reinstall apps... nothing worked.
But just now I deleted my Music folder, rebooted and now have like 17 GB free space available.
And voila, all the apps that were force closing are now working fine.
I've had other phones with like 1GB free space (not recommended) that were still working fine. So what's going on here?
welcome to the future.... lol STREAMM specially when you only have 32gb. but your music library must be huge.
Stream = data usage when not on wifi.
Soon I'll have my android car stereo up and running with hundreds of GB's of storage, so this won't be a big deal later on.
Still kinda annoying though.

I did something very similar, you might have messed up your userdata partition, format it in fastboot (fastboot format userdata) and then reset up your phone and see if you still only have that tiny bit of space. When I messed it up, under storage in settings my system was calculated to be 19.99 gigs when I formated the userdata it dropped to under 5.5
Hope this helps and good luck!
I had to buy the 128GB just so I could have my 70GB of music available without the need to stream.

How Do I Update to the Latest Version My Rooted A3 (2017)?

I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) running Android 6.0.1. I have deferred updating it to whatever the latest version of Android is right now because of the following reasons:
I’d read several people complaining about poor battery life after updating to 7.X.X.
I was afraid to mess with a rooted device and didn’t know where to begin.
It was running perfectly, so I figured, why fix it if it ain’t broke.
However, for the past few months, it has been bugging me constantly about having run out of storage space and being unable to update my apps. I have already deleted several apps that I mostly did not need and—even some I did—to make room, but it keeps filling up the space I create and throwing up the same error every few weeks. This is the current status, according to Titanium Backup:
Code:
System ROM: 4.09 GB (399 MB free)
Internal+Media: 10.7 GB (596 MB free)
Adopted storage: 63.4 GB (53.2 GB free)
I’d done the adoptable storage mod because I’d figured it would compensate for the paltry 16 GB of internal storage this phone came with, but it seems there is no escape from the terrible design of the Android operating system in this regard. (Aside: Seriously, Android is awesome, but this is the worst thing about it! It absolutely, positively drives me up the wall.)
Given this nonsense, I figured I should bite the bullet and take a complete backup of the whole system and format the thing, and then restore everything, so that it will let me be at peace for the next six months. I also thought I would take this opportunity to update to whatever is the most recent update available for this phone, assuming that it is stable and free of any major bugs.
So, can you guys please help me with the following:
Is there anything I can do to get rid of my storage woes once and for all?
How do I go about updating to the latest version of Android while retaining root (preferably using a Mac)?
Is there any way, at all, that I can do this update and fix my storage issues without having to format my phone?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my thread and respond.
