Which sensor? AOD stays on (based on the preference setting though) when the display is off.

Yep, or if you put your finger on the proximity sensor. cheers

Mine seems to stay on when I cover the sensor unless there's a particular time out on it

Stays on, in S20+ (has to be the same in Ultra).
AOD will turn off when the phone decides that it is in a pocket or in a purse. It uses the gyroscope, accelerometer and the proximity sensor for that. I just covered my proximity sensor and AOD went out in about 20-30 seconds. When you take out the phone out of the pocket, you may not notice the AOD turning back on if the phone worked out that it is being taken out. If you are fast enough or the phone is too slow to determine what is going on then you can notice how the AOD wakes up. In addition if you have raise to wake option on, it will be hard to notice since the whole lockscreen will show up.
I had the phone flipped over on my desk for several minutes. I can see AOD still being on. I assume this is one of the scenarios that it should turn off?

Seems like it's the same as the s10plus proximity sensor then. Cheers.

This may be a little nit picky but is there a way to adjust how quick the watch face comes on when you look at it. I have it set to keep the screen off. But when I look at it there is a delay for it to come on.. it's a little over a second... .. anyone else experience this?

Not aware of any way to adjust the speed or sensitivity of the screen wake but mine is definitely quicker than yours. More like 1/4 to 1/2 second for the screen to illuminate.

Its odd but my 2nd unit is a little slower, but it always work when you turn it so its looking right at you. If you turn it a little, flick it, but dont face it right in front of your eyes (direct shot) it wont go to active mode

Is it the Moto watch that senses the motion you make when you look at the watch?

Mine is at least twice as fast to wake when I playback your video and do the same motion at the same time. You ought to compare yours to an in store unit if Verizon has them.

Hmm that's interesting, what watch face are you using? and what settings are configured on your phone?
Is there a way to stop the screen coming on with the knock-knock wake-up?
I was on a walk today with the phone in my pocket all the time, but it said that the screen had taken 20% of my battery - so I assume it was being woken up and going back to sleep.
I'm running Lollipop - 20E.
Cheers
Alan
I dont think that should be the reason for the battery drain. I read somewhere that knock knock won't respond if there is something blocking the proximity sensor(i.e. In pocket, knock knock won't unlock your phone)..but i don't own the device so m not sure tho..

I don't thing that is true as it works with the cover closed (which must block the proximity sensor)

It is true, unless you're using QuickCircle.
There is no way to disable Knock-On with quickcircle case.

If I cover the proximity sensor and try to turn the screen on, I'm successful. That's with both power button and fingerprint sensor. It didn't do this on the most recent 7.0, has anyone else had this problem? Androsensor shows the proximity sensor is working.

Do you mean while in a phone call? I'm running NBD90W 7.0 and the proximity sensor doesn't prevent me from turning the display on while not in a call.

No, I mean while the phone's not being used. I used to be able to set my phone face down, touch the sensor, then it'd vibrate like it accepted the fingerprint, but the screen would stay off.

Interesting because I don't think that was ever supposed to be the case. I've never read that being a feature on the 5X nor Nexus 6P. Are you certain it wasn't just auto brightness? Cuz on mine, with auto brightness enabled, I can reproduce the scenario you are referring to. The phone does look "off" but it's just extremely dim due to the sensor being covered. Happens all the time when I'm in my car since I leave my phone in the cup holder.

I just checked my wife's phone, and you're right, her screen comes on. She's on NBD90W. Maybe it was on MM? Anyway, it's super annoying because my screen will turn on in my pocket and the emergency dialer will get hit. Then it's just pushing buttons for over an hour. (While at work, phone in front pocket)
Edit: I just remembered that this is a replacement device, received about a week ago. Maybe the old device was actually glitching in a good way? I just figured it was NPF10C because I've only really noticed it since I installed that version.

No, I've turned ambient display and the similar new motion in the Moves menu.

I'm trying the app, Pocket Screen Lock to see if it helps. It could be that my power button keeps getting hit, but I don't know how. I do move around a lot at work, though.

I'm not sure else it would be. I'm leaning towards the device possibly having a defect. Have you tried going back to 7.0 and resetting it there? I can't try 7.1.1 until it's official so I'm limited in what I can suggest.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
No, I haven't. At this point, I'm going to stick with the pocket screen lock app, because I'm hoping to avoid wiping the device. Thanks for the help, even though you were mostly just a sounding board. It really did help out.

I had the GS8 Plus and also currently have the Note 8. Both phones would turn off the AOD when the proximity sensor was covered. My U.S. Unlocked S9 Plus does not do this. I double checked the settings (including pocket protection) and tested it by covering the sensor with black cloth for several minutes confirms that it does not turn off.
Is this a new "feature", bug, or what? Anyone seeing different behavior on the Exynos model or carrier is models? It seems strange that Samsung would have changed this.
Edit: Figured it out, guys. I had dexterity and interaction settings on in accessibility that let me wave my hand over the proximity sensor to turn the screen on. That was the cause.
Well, that's disappointing. I thought I remember my S8 having a toggle for that.

In my case (Exynos dual SIM) AOD turns off when the phone is face down. If I flip it very quickly I can see that it was off. I don't know what happens in my pocket, but it might take into account other sensors and turn AOD off.

Thanks. Weird, but I seem to remember the unlocked snapdragon GS8 had something like this at launch too. Maybe they'll update it.

Mine turns off. Exynos model. I have to pick the phone up for it to reappear.
Mine turns also off (Exynos) but it need a short time (a minute?!) till it's off.
Same for me (Exynos), it turns off in about 30 seconds.

That stinks. I love that on my G6. especially if my hands are messy, I can use my knuckle.
By the way have you noticed that if you choose an analog type of clock there's a seconds hand which moves... every second this was not the case with S7 Edge which i used to use. any ideas how to turn off the seconds hand?
Hi
I want to ask is it safe to keep the always on display? My main concern is screen burn in. Can anyone provide an insight? I love the always on display but have turned off with the fear of screen burn in.
Thanks

It's not always on. If you cover the proximity sensor it turns off the always on display. So if in your pocket or face down (which I do to stop watching the time go slow) it will not burn in.
Also Google move the display so it's not constantly displaying is the exact same position all them time, see https://9to5google.com/2017/10/17/google-pixel-2-oled-burn-in-protection/

Yeah it's not as dramatic a shifting as Samsung does it but it does the job. Have had my phone since the month it was released but no AOD display burn in. The bottom though, does have a little but I just recently switched to Fluid Navigation so maybe it'll alleviate some of it
