After I updated to Android 10, a few of my friends on Discord said that they can barely hear me. I made sure my mic was as sensitive as possible in Discord and I barely saw the audio meter go up. Used an app to record my voice and noticed how quiet it is. I've tested this on both PixelDust and stock, and the microphone problem was still there. I downgraded to Pie for a bit and noticed that my mic was normal again, but when I updated back to 10, my mic was insanely quiet again. Is there any way to change your microphone volume in Android?
I can't say about Discord but make sure you have not fallen victim to the infamous microphone issue which plagued the OG Pixels widely, myself included.
It seems that Android 10 is forcing my mic to use the earpiece mic instead of the speaker mic in every app by default now.
Edit: After further testing, plugging in any headset won't change the mic input either. It's stuck on the earpiece mic.

Hello,
I do not use the phone feature very often, but recently I had to take some calls while driving and could hardly understand what the other person is saying, because the speaker phone volume is really low.
Now, of course I set the volume to max and checked every setting I could find related to phone calls. I even went into the service menu and did the speaker tests. There I realized that the speaker phone is using a different speaker as the one that is used to play back music or other sounds. The same sound sample is used in the tests and it is much softer in the speaker phone test compared to the mono or stereo speaker tests.
Is there any hack, setting or configuration file change I can do to use the mono or stereo speaker for the speaker phone feature?
Please help, this is the only gripe with this fine phone I have.
Same problem here.
Solutions, anyone?
UP
Hi everyone,
2 weeks ago I retired my Galaxy S1 and upgraded to a P6. I love a lot about it, and now with the european P125 upgrade, the wifi connectivity issues seem to be resolved as well.
But one issue still seems to come up:
When I have headphones without a mic connected (in my case, Sennheiser HD-25-1), the call quality as perceived by the recipient is horrible when there is ambient noise present (for example in a bus).
So, whenever I listen to music and I receive a call - when I don't disconnect my headphones and use my P6 like usual, I hear the other person just fine, but he hears the ambient noise much much louder than usual.
When I disconnect the headphones, everything is back to normal.
This wasn't the case with my old SGS...
So I did a few experiments:
- Without ambient noise, the recipient doesn't notice much of a difference whether I use headphones or not
- With ambient noise (simulated by loud radio), when I don't use headphones, the other person hears me fine, much louder than the ambient.
- With ambient noise and connected headphones, my voice is as loud as the ambient noise, so the other person has big troubles understanding me
- Now, when I talk to the *top* of the P6 (right next to the USB port) into the mic that is used to filter out ambient noise during calling, my voice is *louder* than before - so at least that is a small workaround to that
So it seems to me, that when I connect headphones, the upper mic is used only, while without connected headphones, the lower mic is used as primary mic and the upper one is used just for filtering out ambient.
Anyway, it's doing something that I don't want it to do and now I wonder if I can change it
(By the way, I tried with 3 different headphones, doesn't make a difference).
I have a P6 that used to have B606 and now has B125 and it behaved the same for both software versions.
Soooo.. any clues?
regards,

Go to Settings/Sound/Dolby Digital Plus and uncheck it. See if that helps.
It's already unchecked... :/
I have noticed the same problem...
very annoying...

Just wondering if anyone has tried Skype, Google Hangouts or the like where you have the call volume set to max?
I can hear the other party just fine, but they tell me that from my end the sound is very muffled. I finally figured out that I can solve this by turning the volume down 2 or 3 notches, but then I can only make the call in a quiet room or else I can't hear them properly!
I reckon what must be happening is that the phone is trying to compensate for the speaker and mic being so close together (stopping feedback) that at loud volume it just aggressively cancels too much out which then includes my own voice.
So now I think I also know why normal speakerphone/handsfree phone calls are so soft in volume - Sony have deliberately knobbled it as a workaround rather than fixing the core issue. But other apps are allowed to use a higher speaker volume and so run into this issue if using the microphone as well.
Since the last two days I have been suffering from a low volume in the internal speaker during calls. The other person's voice is so low that it's almost inaudible. I can hear the caller on speaker though.
Moreover when the answering machine or IVR is on (during a call like if you call a call center and you need to go through the ivr), the volume is better, though not loud as normal but the moment a human starts talking, the volume drops.
I tried testing the hardware by dialing *#0*# and the receiver does emit sufficiently loud sound. So the hardware looks fine.
I also updated my os from 4.3 to 4.4.2 yet no change in the volume of the internal speaker. I also rebooted, reset my phone, still the problem persists.
I'm on a completely stock rom with no modifications or rooting.
Please help.
Sounds like hardware to me, especially if you're full stock. I had the same thing happened before and I swapped the speaker with a spare dead S3 and the problem was fixed. It may sound louder when a machine answers because its not speaking into a mic and background noise doesnt have to be filtered on that end.

Yup I also think it might be a hardware bug, which I'm trying hard to ignore
Btw what do you make of the hardware test that does emit a sufficiently loud sound from the receiver? I dialed *#0*#0 and tested the receiver, which works okay. So I thought it might not be a hardware bug.
I've seen a few mentions here and there on rom threads about issues with the i747 speakerphone - but no responses as to how to/it was fixed - specifically not being able to control speakerphone volume as well as echo on the other end of the call when trying to use speakerphone.
I've had the issue on OctOS and Slim roms, both 7x and 6x android versions, but not having an issue if going back to stock rom. The volume and clarity is fine & adjustable when using the handset, but when you switch to speakerphone in call it is really loud and the clarity is bad (it cuts out every other word or so) as well as the person on the other end says they can hear themselves. When pressing the hardware volume keys the on screen indicator is showing lowering the volume, but it doesn't have much if any impact on the volume coming out of the speakerphone.
What needs to be updated or flashed to take care of the speakerphone issues?
Same (but different) on basic Lineage rom
I also recently tried a base Lineage 14 rom (lineage-14.1-20180531-UNOFFICIAL-d2att). There is definitely a noticeable change in speakerphone volume when its adjusted with this rom however the echo persists.
I TWRP'd back to a recent Oct-N backup since it was fully setup already and the base Lineage didn't fix the issue. I paired a Bluetooth headset while on Oct-N and it works just fine, so that's a workaround for not being able to use the speaker.
It seems to me the echo is being caused by the speakerphone mic picking up the speaker audio. Is there a way to adjust echo cancellation or the sensitivity of the speakerphone mic (not seeing anything in basic settings menus)?
