The above info indicates the phone is the US Developer's Edition.
The Marshmallow (last official version released) RUU is here: http://dl3.htc.com/application/RUU_M8_UL_M60_SENSE70_MR_BrightstarUS_WWE_6.12.1540.4.exe
To install RUU, you will need to lock the bootloader with command: fastboot oem lock
If you still get any errors running the RUU, let me know. For some (most) US versions of the M8, you need to flash the Marshmallow firmware (radio, hboot, etc.) in order to upgrade to Marshmallow RUU. Don't remember if this requirement applied to the Dev Ed.

You sure the boot splash screen doesn't say HTC? Although the HTC logo pretty clearly says HTC, so I believe you when you say it reads "PTCi" but just want to confirm. If you are seeing PTCi, it seems your phone has a different ROM installed (than the stock HTC Dev Edition ROM). Which would agree with the fact the bootloader has been unlocked. I'm not famililar with PTCi, so I can't be sure what the ROM differences are. But flashing the RUU should at least not have any affect on network connectivity (as ROM does not affect the network baseband). And the stock Dev Ed ROM (which will be installed by the RUU) is a pretty good one.

I purchased my phone T-mobile M8 used and it had been converted to GPE. There is a crackling issue with the top speaker and I'd like to return it for warranty repair. I haven't seen a great thread on converting back to stock from GPE so I thought I'd share the research I have done - even though I have not been successful yet...
With adb/fastboot, drivers, etc all in place...
Reset Status to LOCKED (phone must be rooted to do this)
http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-reset-unlocked-status-to-locked-on-htc-one-m8/
Flash firewater custom hboot
file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52848006&postcount=125
flashing instructions: http://firewater-soff.com/hboot-downloads/
Change your CID to T-MOB010 in Fastboot
command: fastboot oem writecid T-MOB010
Download the RUU
http://dl3.htc.com/application/RUU_M8_TMOUS_1.57.531.7.exe
Run the RUU in Windows. Everything connects and it starts installing then - I get the Error 159 [IMAGE]
I have followed the steps above, downloaded twice, repeated and still...no dice. Any clue what I'm missing? I'm sure there will be other folks who need to revert and would benefit from this.

Change your MID to WWE to run that RUU, 0P6B10000.
[how to] change your MID without an eng bootloader In the section "HTC Europe MID" . Copy and paste commands, make sure you have no extra spaces either before or after command. Putting it in manually and you do it wrong might give you more problems.
Change CID to HTC__001
fastboot oem writecid HTC__001
had errors but fixed, now to try the RUU out.
EDIT:
RUU was successful, i now have wifi, anything else i need to do to be back on stock or is that it? will i be able to upgrade to Android L?
do i need to lock my bootlocker?
does RUU install a stock recovery?
So it updates successfully, however when I go into Google Play Movies, only the rent option is available, I buy movies a lot as I own Chromecast, anyone know why buy option would be gone? Checked other android phones in house and they all still have buy options.
Hey XDA,
I have a bit of a problem! I was trying to S-OFF my Tmobile m8 phone (ViperOne 2.5.0) so that I could upgrade to the latest and greatest. I installed Sunshine and was told my ROM wasn't compatible.
I followed the instructions here: http://www.android.gs/downgrade-t-mobile-htc-one-m8-to-official-stock-firmware-with-ruu/ to get back to stock so I could S-OFF.
Basically, relock the bootloader (done, successfully - shows Relocked) and ran the RUU utility. The RUU utility says that it's not the right version - I downloaded RUU_M8_TMOUS_1.57.531.7.exe. Now, my phone is stuck in fastboot/hboot and when I try to reboot, goes right back into fastboot. I have no idea what to do from here. I can't get into recovery to restore an image. I can't "fastboot oem unlock" to see if that helps - it fails.
Any ideas?

Your issue is that you are trying to run an RUU for an older version (4.4.2), or that you are not on T-Mo US, but on an International/European version.
If you are in the US, run this RUU instead. It will jump you up to Lollipop 5.0, and should also fix your issue.
The above link is to HTC's US website, and is the official 4.20.531.4 RUU. You will want to scroll down to the manual system update instructions. The download is at the bottom of the page.
Good luck!

Yep. That was the problem. I can tell from your bootloader version that you are on 4.4.3 firmware. You can only downgrade if you are s-off.
If you want to get S-Off, after running the RUU would be a good time to do it. It works best when on the stock ROM, but will also work with a near stock ROM such as MaximusHD.

Actually, the MID shouldn't matter.
With SuperCID, the MID check is bypassed. It's worked that way with the M7, M8, and M9. With the HTC 10 though, MID must be changed as SuperCID doesn't bypass the check.
Flashing the latest Verizon firmware should be enough. The RUU would only be necessary to run a stock ROM. If a custom ROM is going to be installed, the firmware flash will be enough.
He/she should make sure to flash a full stock firmware and not a "no wipe" version though, since the boot.img (stock kernel) will be removed on a no-wipe firmware package.

Well, flashing GSM firmware onto a CDMA device is NEVER recommended, so I do understand your thoughts here. And I do agree that running a RUU would be the best and cleanest way to convert back. Changing the MID back to Verizon's should not be necessary, but truthfully there is no reason not to. The OP should stick to Verizon firmware only, so the MID being changed back to 0P6B20000 would probably be a good idea. :highfive:

Well, I hope they know what they are doing. Because the phone was all kinds of messes up, and not every repair person would know how to fix it (if its even fixable). Someone at some point (if not you, then a former owner) tried to flash the unbranded Euro firmware to this Verizon device. The result is usually a radio brick, and the damage may be permanent.
Most that person can do, is flash the Verizon firmware and RUU (as others have stated) and hope it works properly after that. Unless they are going to replace the whole mainboard.

You have the US Sprint version. US versions can't update OTA unless you are actually connected to that US carrier (in your case Sprint).
So therefore, yes RUU is the best way to install an "official" update.
You can find the Sprint RUUs here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173
You can update right to the last version (Marshmallow) 6.20.651.3 without flashing any intermediate versions. You will however need to flash the 6.20.651.3 firmware before 6.20.651.3 RUU (requirement peculiar to US Marshmallow RUUs).
Instruction on how to flash 6.20.651.3 firmware are on the same thread as the RUUs.
Keep in mind that flashing RUU will wipe the phone. So backup any data you want to keep to SD or off the phone (cloud, computer) before doing any of the steps.

It won't "fix" the issue of not getting software updates OTA. It's not so much an "issue" as it is just a fact of the US versions of the M8.
But it also doesn't matter. The RUU I suggested will put you on the last version released by HTC (Marshmallow). There have been no updates since, and there will be no more updates.

I have a HTC one M8 and it is in vicious Boot loop, sometime it go beyond the lock screen foo few minutes but reboot again. I tried to to hard reset, recovery options etc. but it did not delete any data. All the data stays same though i tired multiple times. I installed the adb utility but it does not work when I select the FASTBOOT USB mode. It only works when phone goes beyond the unlock screen for a few minutes but phone boot loop starts.
FAST boot utility works with FASTBOOT USB mode and list the device when use "fastboot devices" command.
Request you to please help to resolve this issue.
