I have note 10+ exynos. The leak appeared when updated to Android 10 with Android 9 I have no issues. When kernel memory increase I have lags especially when I try to use the camera the phone is not responding at all!

I have noticed the same memory leak. Right now I am trying to find the culprit! I logged kernel memory for 3 days. What I noticed is that memory leak occurs during the night when I charge my phone. See attached graph. First day I did not charge my phone, the others two I did and you see how it jumps around 1GB during charging time. The log is every 30 min.

When I first boot the device kernel memory is around 700mb which seems ok! After some days of use kernel memory jumps to 2.5-3G!

Do you maybe have auto optimise and app management enabled? Thinking it might account for memory spike as some apps restart

I have also tried with auto optimize off and I have deleted all apps in the list but nothing changed. Please also note that the memory only refers to kernel memory.

My EXYNOS 9820 S10 + is the same situation as you, but just found out that the cause is a ZRAM leak
After the ZRAM leak is full, turning on the camera will seriously lag
This situation is already a common problem in my country.
Experienced OS Beta1 before and I have noticed this
I also have a Hong Kong version of Snapdragon Note10 +, but this has not happened
Note10+ and S10+ are both updated to Android 10 / One ui 2.0

Is this leak only for Exynos versions? I have the US unlocked N10+ and I haven't rebooted it since the last firmware update 27 days ago (BSLD). I've been using it heavily the whole time and have not had any problems.

Could you please printscreen the OS ram usages. You can find inside the Developer settings->Memory->Memory usage->Android OS
here's the OS ram usage right after a reboot https://imgur.com/a/PVDnIU9 (this is normal, and you want this), and here's the usage after 24 hours for those experiencing a leak https://imgur.com/a/fXGIHxq
Do you have sdcard?
Activated dark mode?
Auto optimise apps?
Thanks!!
Sure, hope this proves helpful. SD card: yes (encrypted). Dark mode: yes. Auto-optimize: yes.
I don't have the screenshot uploaded anywhere, but the stats are: ave mem usage 5.3GB, freq high (100%), max mem usage 5.3GB, kernel 2.6GB/high (100%), native 2.4GB/high(1005), caches 184MB/high(100%). That's higher than your memory-leak stats, but I'm not seeing any lag (with plenty of RAM still free, I'm not sure why any problems would be expected).

Thanks for the info! Maybe I use more ram than than you.. I dont know. If you want to check you can use fill ram memory tool and click fill full ram. For example now that I am after reboot and kernel ram is low the tool could fill up to 7.5G before it crashed... If the kernel ram is high I cannot go over 2-4G even worst in some situations.
It a pity to have 12G and still have memory issues!

Dunno. I use the usual range of apps: social-media, maps & navigation, web browsing, camera, video-streaming, etc. (not much gaming though). Sorry, no time right now to try the RAM-filling tool. My sympathies--sounds like a frustrating problem.

ps. has anyone logged a complaint using the samsung members app?
I was told by a samsung rep this will make the report go to the appropriate department faster.

I also see that swap is full after some time but the most critical issue I think is the kernel jump from 0.7G to 2.7G maybe this affects the ZRAM-swap increase!
ZRAM: 286,312K physical used for 1,112,228K in swap (2,621,436K total swap)
Based on my logs ZRAM physical used is not increasing.... But swap is indeed increasing! I will log also the swap to see if it is relevant!

yeah, not sure if it'll help, but worth a shot
I have done the following changes and it seems to solve the issue, but I do not know exactly what is the culpit!!
-Updated to Latest firmware BTA7
-disabled AOD
-Enabled "show charging information" when device is charging
-remove home place from my locations in my Samsung profile ( I did this because I think the leak occurred during night charging when I was at home!! Don't know why!!!)
Last night kernel memory when up to 1.9G which might me logical. And after a memory fill kernel memory dropped down to 1.1G again. Also swap space is not filled yet!
Now I will have to start enabling one by one to find the culpit!!

Apart from the firmware, all those settings I had from the start and have had this issue, so my bet would be if anything, it's fixed in the firmware.

Hi,
I have a rooted sm-p600. I have been finding ways to speed up my tablet and reduce (if not totally eliminate) the lag.
First, I installed wanam xposed module and enabled/disabled the "touchwiz DVFS" option and "Enable boost mode" option. I don't know if it makes any difference and I'm not totally sure either what that option is for. So if anyone could tell me if I should enable/disable it, that'll be great,
Second, I tried to use an overclocking app, "no-frills cpu" and "cpu tuner". I know that I actually have to have a custom kernel which enables overclocking but I really didn't need to overclock my tablet, I just basically want to keep my min and max frequencies to 1.9 so that means, it won't try to underclock my cputo save battery (which the kernel is doing by default). It works great and it DID eliminate the lag and the tablet was so snappy. But there's one glitch. If I lock the tablet, it fails to wake up. And I had to do a forced reboot. But there's one thing I've noticed and this may be of help to someone who is trying to figure out how to eliminate the known lag issue in the note 10.1 (2014). It only hangs if the tablet is not charging. Meaning, if I set the max and min frequencies to 1.9ghz, it hangs (once locked) if the tablet is not plugged into the charger. If I plug it into the charger, even if I lock it and unlock it several times, it doesn't hang.
So, anybody got any clue as to how to resolve this issue? Or has anyone come up with a better kernel for this tablet?
Try setting the min to 1.3 ghz see what that does or try using flux to set min Max and memory read times to 3072 or whatever the value is I forget. Play around with the settings and I'm sure you will find a better more stable experience. I don't know how having two quad cores affects the performance maybe that's why you getting the black screen and no wake on battery. It might have to tick over the lower quad first before it kicks in the main one. Might be taxing the battery to much clocking straight to 1.9. Hope this helps let me know how you get on

Which overclocking app are you referring to? I would assume you're talking about "cpu tuner" as the other app I've mentioned in my initial pose which is "no-frills cpu control" doesn't have any other settings besides the min and max frequency.
GOOD NEWS though! I got cpu tuner to work! I did lower the min frequency to 1.8ghz and kept max at 1.9ghz. Actually, there are only 3 selectable values for both fields, it's 250mhz, 1.8ghz and 1.9ghz. I gave 1.8ghz a try, locked the tablet, it froze, then I restarted it. The settings were reapplied when I logged back in, then after that it never froze again even after I've locked it a few times. The performance is excellent! I tried running multiple apps on pen window. I've never seen it perform this well since I bought this tablet! Let's see if it works well in a few days.

Yeah best to try flux123 kernal app on the playstore you can set a lot more in there. Works like a treat on my s4. Set it to 1.3 and 1.9. I'll post some more settings to try later. All I've got is nova launcher and disabled as much blout that I don't use. Not yet rooted on my tablet but just doing them two simple things makes a ton of difference. As you rooted you could use root uninstaller to remove touchwiz and other stupid startup processes. I did it last week on my tab 8.0 got rid of 12 pointless processes now that flys wouldn't even think it was the tablet. Can't wait for a oc kernel and decent rom for the note 10.1 will come into its own then. To bad Samsung killed it with all there unneeded rubbish .

At this point, I don't really mind the slight degrading of the battery life, I just want the tablet to be snappier.
By the way, I installed faux123, but it seems that I cannot change the settings. Like when I try to drag the min frequency slider to 1.3ghz, it slides back to 250mhz. Also, all of the other settings I set revert back to the original settings after I reboot. I have enabled the "set on boot" options on all screens, but they all just revert back to original settings on reboot. Am I missing something?

Just came back to check for anymore help I could give and the best thing I can advice is clean rom. Hi all.
This thread is for random builds and development. There is no agenda other than to keep the Kindle Fire alive for the few of us that remain. This thread is not meant to support any specific ROM. I hope this is okay with the forum administrators.
With that said, please join in. We're all in this together.
Cm-12.1 2015-10-15
I made a public viewable folder on my Google Drive for Android stuff here https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B7BjC3Ky49TVcjdZQlpHYV9JWXc&usp=sharing
I uploaded a build of CM-12.1. The file name is weird so I will explain (in case you care):
cm-12.1-20151015-UNOFFICIAL-kad-rsm-O3-mo3-wifi-otterx.zip:
kad = kernel compiled with ArchiDroid toolchain
rsm = ROM compiled with SaberMod toolchain
O3 = almost all compiled with -O3
mo3 = more optimization, specifically as much of JustArchi's compiler flags as would work. The '3' is my third attempt to add more optimizations.
wifi = hack to make wifi work without doing a clean install, that is, there is a script, fix-mac.sh, which I think only gets run with a clean install. My hack was simply to copy the file that the wifi driver wants to the name that it wants. This should allow either dirty or clean flashing.
Suggestions:
* Change the animation duration levels in Developer Options to 0.3x or less.
* Use the Noop I/O scheduler for regular things like reading a book (that's why you bought a kindle, right) or browsing the web.
* Use the Deadline I/O scheduler for interactive things like playing a game.
* If you like Gapps, I suggest OpenGapps or TK Gapps. I have not tried this ROM with Gapps.
* You will need to get a third party program to change kernel settings. I like Kernel Adiutor.
The issues:
* Don't use the brightness slider in quicksettings. If you do use it, the status bar goes away and leaves the top part of the quicksettings panel in its place. I suggest disabling the slider and using the brightness control in the status bar settings. I'm not sure if this is a new bug or the result of too much optimization.
* There are no app snapshots in the recents switcher. This may be internal to Android as a way to save memory for low RAM devices, or it may be a bug in CM.
* The Kindle Fire just doesn't have enough RAM (or rather Android is just too freakishly bloated). Attempting to run memory intensive apps will likely result in them crashing or running slowly because the RAM they are using is being swapped to ZRAM. You may be able to adjust the ZRAM size and get better results.
There you have it. I hope you find it useful.
Ah. I just realize this thread. Going to try the 12.1 now
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
@pfederighi. Running fine and fast on the first boot. I clean flashed it without gapps.
After I flash Pico opengapps, it's rather slow now, but probably adjusting things. I'm going to use this for a while and see.
I M using privacy guard to block wake up and keep wake permission for (almost) all apps, since I don't use app that need to do that. Been set it up like that since ur cm11. Gave me very good battery life.
Will post some screenshot later
Thanks for this

Here you go. It's getting faster now.
Is there any downside of using higher zram? Default it 60mb, I change it to 1gb. Using noop as suggested. Low memory killer should be okay I think, but previous cm11 use much lower than this (120mb). Although I changed it to around 100mb too.

I tried increasing ZRAM to 100 MB, I think, and found some things crashed, like the Amazon Underground and Monument Valley apps. I think there wasn't enough real RAM to allocate that much for ZRAM. I changed it back to 60 MB and both of those apps worked again, though slowly.
I'm not sure if I had KSM (kernel samepage merging) enabled. If I didn't, I probably should have. KSM can free up quite a bit of RAM, at the cost of CPU. Though, one can change the parameters for KSM and perhaps find a nice compromise.
Hello,
I'm following your instructions but when I start Kernel Adiutor I get the message No root available. I tried installing SuperSU but it fails when trying to update its binary. Any suggestions?

U don't need supersu. There's su app built in. Try installing Adiutor again, I remember I had that issue too, but I re open it, and it ask superuser request.
Su setting is on developer options. It's enabled by default.
Did u open kernel Adiutor and supersu from notification panel? (the one that tell us that xxx app is installed). I did, and it give that error. starting the app from home screen and app drawer works fine. Dunno if it's related to notification panel one, or u just need to open it twice.

I don't use that many app, so dunno have experience with crashing. I use 1gb zram since ur cm11, although I don't see any benefit. No crashes though.
I'll try 256mb later then.

Indeed, but that is swap to disk. ZRAM is the method of allocating an area of RAM that is treated as a compressed disk and using it as a swap file system. It is a way of using limited RAM more efficiently, at the expense of CPU time, but it is still using RAM. So, on our device, 100 MB is eaten up by graphics buffers and proprietary firmware. Another ~300 MB is eaten up by Lollipop itself. This leaves us with ~100 MB for user programs, which is not a lot. If you allocate ZRAM at 60 MB, that leaves 40 MB of regular RAM + ~120 MB compressed on the ZRAM drive for programs. This gives us more memory to work with, but effectively 75% of it is compressed, which means every time it's read, it needs to be decompressed, and every time it's written, it needs to be compressed. The memory manager of linux does a great job of making it efficient, but it still slows down the system.
If Android were to actually swap to disk, which it can do, it would wear out the solid state media very quickly because there are a limited number of writes before the media no longer works. There have been great advances in the field of solid state technology such as Intel's and Micron's new 3D XPoint (it's awesome, check it out). So, in the near future this may no longer be an issue, but it doesn't help our old devices.
If you really do need the memory, you can make a swap file on an externally powered USB hard disk, mount the drive, and then issue a `swapon path_to_your_swap_file` from the terminal. I've done it before. It's painfully slow, but it works.
Thanks for the explanation.
Cmiiw, so zram is on the ram itself?
So if I'm not using many apps at the same time, probably better to use zero zram? Assuming the free RAM is enough for the app.
about KSM, does it mean that with KSM enable, ram that is used for the system can be put on zram (compressed)? And by that, does it mean that zram is used only for user apps?

Regarding not using ZRAM:
From what I understand, yes, if you have enough RAM without using ZRAM, then it's generally better to not use it.
Regarding KSM:
KSM compares the specified number (default 100) of RAM pages per check. If it finds that any RAM pages are identical, it merges them to a single copy-on-write page (that is, they will remain merged until a process attempts to write to it, at which point it'll be copied back to separate pages). Since there are often many read-only pages that happen to be identical, it tends to be very effective.
It runs at the specified interval (default 500ms). I've found that increasing the interval to 750ms or even 1000ms significantly reduces system load with no appreciable difference in the amount of RAM freed.
Because for some CPU & RAM intensive programs I've noticed slightly worse performance with KSM running, I have sometimes run KSM for a few seconds to free up the RAM, disabled it, and then run said program. It seems to work rather well. I suppose I could also have left it running and just increased the sleep interval to a higher amount, say 10000ms.
In general, KSM will free up about 10% of the total RAM, which in my experience is true.
CM-11.0
I've uploaded another CM-11 build. The kernel is compiled with ArchiDroid, the ROM with Uber. I think it is slightly faster than the previously posted all SaberMod build. It still suffers from all the regular CM-11 quirks on our device. The direct link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7BjC3Ky49TVVGF3TFJ0ckJzYjA
Try as I might, I have failed to find a solution for the annoying wpa_supplicant error. That is, about every 2 seconds, `logcat` will spit out the following: "E/wpa_supplicant( 490): recvfrom(ctrl_iface): Try again". The 490 is the process ID number, yes?. I've found various references online, but no solutions. Does anyone know what the issue is or how to fix it?
And now for something completely different:
Is there anyone who would be interested in a CM-10.2 OtterX build? Since the general consensus is that CM-10.2 was noticeably faster than CM-11 (I remember it being so), I thought it'd be a good challenge to convert it, but only if there's a desire for it. Please let me know.
Cm10.x is better in performance, but imo, the sound is better/louder on cm11-12.
But no privacy guard on JB, right? I can't get similar battery life on JB, even using deep sleep apps. Unless you can bring privacy guard to cm10, I'll stick on 11+
What cm-11 quirks are you talking about?
Thanks for this.

CM-11 quirks include things like (it's possible some of these are specific to using a different kernel than the original or using optimizing toolchains):
* Sometimes when you press the Recents button on the navbar it'll come up saying there are no open apps, even when there are apps open.
* Sometimes the clock/weather/upcoming alarms/upcoming events part of the lock screen doesn't appear when waking up the KF.
* Sometimes you have to press the power button more than once to get the KF to wake up.
* Sometimes pressing the power button doesn't work and you may have to plug the KF in to get it to wake up.
* Certain apps, like any Netflix version after 3.0, just don't like the ROM.
I always had good battery life with CM-10.x, even with gapps installed. As for privacy guard, I'll look into it. All of this is as time permits. Edit: It looks like privacy guard is a part of CM-10.2. At least there are a lot of references to it being in 10.2.

I don't remember facing those issues. About have to press button several time to wake up, sometimes it just need 1-3 secs for the screen to wake, probably because of low cpu clock too.
I remember using 10.x that has privacy guard, but it's different from 11.x. As long I can block wake up and keep wake, I'm sold.
As the sound,
Anyway, since you re offering otterx version, I definitely will test it out, since it's easy and won't require a pc.
Thanks

10 is faster, much more responsive than 11. For free RAM I'm not sure, but AFAIK, free RAM can be set using minfree. More free RAM doesn't mean it will run faster, it just mean less crash on apps and more capable on running apps that need high ram.
@pfederighi already explain about the zram. Using that, we can get more free RAM, but will use More cpu to decompress the zram when accessed. So, probably not faster than without using zram.
If we really want to compare the ram, I suggest to compare the usage (system), not the free one.

I too would be very interested in a 10.2 build for otterx
tribute to xda.
tuning parameters for cpufreq_interactive & core_ctl & hmp_sched & some more
for MIUI and LOS, RR, AOKP, MoKee, Bliss (all zwliew's forks).
v.4
- conception is changed (again)
sometimes 1 big + 2 little is not enough. so now i offer you 1 big + 3 little or 2 big + 2 little at your choice.
all these combination is very individual and i want you will make your own good config.
now it's much simpler to customize - all configs are in separate patches.
just download zip, unpack it, correct config, pack it back. that's all.
if you will find better configuration, please, give your advices here in this thread.
i recommend you to use good monitoring and profiling tool from Qualcomm https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.quicinc.trepn
for custom rom (!!!zwliew's sources based) users:
you can apply cpu_tuning* patches direct on your native kernel, you dont need to change kernel, it will work (may be even better, who knows).
or you can apply patch with new LOS kernel from fedosis with very light undervolting, new low frequences and some more improvements.
(all kernels are zwliew's sources based, compatible)
so,
1. install "lineage-13.0-20170202-UNOFFICIAL-land-kernel.zip" (kernel only)
2. install "cpu_tuning-4-1x3-cm13.zip" (config only)
if you skip 1st step, it will repack your present boot (only "init.qcom.power.rc" will be replaced) and will work with your old kernel, but without low freqs, etc. you can test this case also.
!!!backup your "boot" partition.
for MIUI users:
there are patches with similar settings for you.
just install "cpu_tuning-4-1x3-miui.zip". only "/system/etc/init.qcom.post_boot.sh" will be replaced.
!!!backup "/system/etc/init.qcom.post_boot.sh"
(there are also patch with original MIUI "/system/etc/init.qcom.post_boot.sh", if something will go wrong)
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1G5yP4fi63mbEpzNHREVVB6a00
and later i will add something about thermal config, there are also some points to change
v.3
- conception is changed:
now 1 big + 2 little cpus are permanent online (offline-to-online is not cheap).
permanent also means, they are always the same: cpu0 (big master), cpu4 (little master), cpu5 (little master's friend). all others are lazy, they stay offline most times and go online and work only if these three are very busy. "core_ctl" was patched to implement this logic.
- (not for MIUI) low frequences was added. 768 and especially 960 are too high for low load.
- (not for MIUI) light cpus boost on screen touch was implemented.
v.2
now 8 cpus sleep more (in active mode) and wake faster.
LITTLE cluster for little tasks (at least 1 active), big cluster for big tasks (mostly sleeps).
awaiting of your impressions and results about working time and performance before and after.
we will tune it
one more thing:
i think xda is for advanced users. it's all experimental.
and better do nothing if you dont understand what are you doing.
will this work in mokee rom??

CPU load is bigger because the task focused only on one core and sleep another core so that they may use upto 100% of one core rather than dividing it to another core (MAYBE, IT'S JUST HYPOTHESE)
I don't even know how it works ?
Will try, thanks for your work.

miui people report about lags. thanks.
im working on it. if you want to solve this problem fast, just try to make 1 change in "/system/etc/init.qcom.post_boot.sh"
add one little cpu always online at line 1502:
Code:
echo 2 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu4/core_ctl/min_cpus
or more radical
add one big cpu always online at line 1494:
Code:
echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/core_ctl/min_cpus
or even try both changes together, why not
ps.: not bad if you will report about power consumption changes (if any) also. means power consumption in acive mode (display on).
it often stucks only on one core enabled which cause lags. RR ROM

yes, mine feels lag too, but only at the start after long sleep. it's fine after some minutes/hours regular use
Got a great battery life improvement after using this mod. Arround 8,5 hours SOT (remaining at 8%) full 4G data with heavy browsing & some gaming use
Waiting for more feedback, thanks for making this mod!

hei niga ramonet ) is working or not? did ur phone burned or fired?
I flashed FSC+ in my all tests. Because I need a cooler phone not full horse power
I was using Stock 7.0 Customized TR 32.3.A.2.33 Rooted E6553 Single
First Try: It caused boot loop.
Second Try: Caused boot loop again. I mounted system or not. It caused again and again.
Third Try: Flashed Twrp and Supersu latest version again. Then flashed your mod. Phone opened but it was hot like hell. I left phone to cooldown, after 30 minutes I started to use phone again but phone gets extremely hot fast and it lags like hell. I think something is wrong about thermal mod.
Fourth Try: I have made a clean install. Rom, Root and Twrp., At last I flashed your mod. It gets hot and lags again with light using.
I made these tests between 30 minutes to provide healthy results.
BTW I am a light user. I don't have any bloat apps and I never play games on my phone. I use Whatsapp, messaging, calling, facebook, messenger and instagram. I watch videos 45minutes once a day and I turn off my wifi and mobile data on nights ( Because I sleep )

Disable "Data Analytics" in settings-About. Disable unnecessary apps, delete unused apps, Disable Sony's email app ( I use Gmail), Disable Sony Support App in settings-Apps (you can disable only one of support apps. After that play store will ask you to update support app. Do it. It won't drain battery.), Use 3G mobile data mode. 4G or 4.5G drains battery like hell, Flash this mod's latest version again 2 times in Twrp. After flash delete cache. Reboot phone. After boot, reboot into twrp again and wipe cache and dalvik/art cache then reboot. So thermal file flashed succesfully and all leftovers from old thermal file will be cleaned.
I cannot give screenshots but I take 4.5hours SOT with less heat. I am a light user and I use FSC+ latest version

Its almost been a week since Android Pie was released for H930...
I have been using it since release... I have observed that RAM Management on this firmware is very bad...Like... Almost impossible....Unable to listen to music and scroll though my mailbox too....
Is anyone else facing this issue..or only specific set of people like me
Although Ram management is also poor in Pixel phones... but..Its not this bad...
Hope anyone finds a solution ?
Some workarounds:

I found a REALLY WEIRD and really SIMPLE solution for this ACCIDENTALLY.
So just like you guys, I had this issue with ram management, asked around on reddit and stuff, really weird because even when there is enough ram is just doesn't let apps in the background, even lost calls because of it apparently.
Solution: Make a backup using LG Bridge
It sounds weird, but it worked for me. Somehow, after I made a backup with LG Bridge, all my app permissions got reset, so FluidNG for example stopped working out of nowhere and I had to reboot the phone.
After rebooting I gave the apps I wanted the permissions they needed and SOMEHOW that fixed the issue, I can open more than 7 apps in the background with no issue.
Don't ask me how the hell this works, but it did so I'm sharing it here to see if it works for you too. I didn't need to reset the phone at all.

I do not know what this could be caused by. My phone also uses a lot of RAM since the pie update. But: In doing so it is absolutely smooth and very conservative with the battery. I do not experience lags or bad performance.
I came from LiquidRemix and flashed the KDZ. Set up the phone. Then formated it again and flashed the TWRP zip and started over once more because I messed around with deleting system apps too much in the first try.

Performance and Battery is fine for mee too... But when it comes to multi-tasking.... Its almost impossible....
Home launcher gets killed in the background when I open Camera app?
Hm. Ok strange. This works for me. I can open a dozen apps in parallel and switch between them without problems. But I am not a ultra heavy multitasker either
I am facing the same issue currently and it drives me crazy. If I just listen to music on Spotify and browse through my mails, Spotify gets killed. This is a total joke IMHO I will try a factory reset now to see if that helps.
H930 is my model btw.
If it doesn't get better, I will have to go back to a custom ROM I guess.
Yeah bro ram management is very poor. I only get 700mb free ram.

Poor optimization by LG..
Yep same here. Spootify is killied in the background and switching between cards in samsung or chrome browser causes cards reloading.

For the record, free RAM is not an indicator of poor management. Modern operating systems like Android use up as much RAM as reasonably possible, as the OS will run faster that way.
I'm not saying that Pie is better/worse... just saying that free RAM is not a good metric. My Oreo phone is running fine with 771 MB free right now... again, this is normal.

I'm not saying that Pie is better/worse... just saying that free RAM is not a good metric. My Oreo phone is running fine with 771 MB free right now... again, this is normal.

You are right, but...
On my 3GB RAM Quark unless I had 1GB free RAM, the phone would lag severely and stop responding well. I could "clear all" Recents to get 1GB RAM back, and it would spring to life.
On both V30 and V30+, on rooted stock Oreo firmware, I consistently have 600MB - 1GB free and have no lags.
However, if it got down to 200MB, would it start acting wonky like the Quark?
Enough people are complaining about it, I'm starting to get concerned. This isn't buggy beta tests any more. Hopefully they'll fix it before they roll out the North American variants.
But see next post. Maybe not RAM, but kernel governor or something?

Yeah bro ram management is very poor. I only get 700mb free ram.

I have less than that 700MB free RAM right now on rooted stock Oreo and have no problems. I have 549MB free and my phone is not lagging at all.
So, it's not RAM, maybe it's something else with Pie. Maybe the kernel governor?

That's what I was thinking, that the governor or kernel might even be an issue. First step, can people seeing the problem tell us what governor is activated? Most kernel tools will tell you what you have turned on. CPU-Z tells me that I'm running Interactive... and kernel version is "4.4.78-perf+". Again, this may not be enough info to work from, but it would be a start for looking at least.
Maybe spending some time with our kernel devs would help explain, too, as they'd probably have a better idea of what to look for.
In my case it was extremely bad when I updated using OTA, Messenger would literally get killed while I was typing a message. Performing a fresh install helped to some extent and the phone is usable and running otherwise pretty smoothly now, but still kills background apps much quicker than on Oreo. (edit) just tested, taking a picture in the stock camera app closes the app launcher (Nova).
H930, Interactive, 4.4.153-perf+

I could have sworn I read an XDA article that Pie had RAM management issues.

Maybe it does. But it's just the RAM available people are complaining about on Pie is the same RAM or more than we have on Oreo...
And I have no lags on US998 Oreo with less than 600MB RAM. So, wondering if it's CPU Governor or something.

I also wonder if the update process is not done well. In other words, I might suggest trying a factory reset and starting from scratch again? I know updating across a large OS change can often cause problems... I've seen this happen on other devices...

I tried installing the ROM from scratch with "Refurbish" option on LGUP and did not restore any backup. Same thing. I think LG just rushed this update too fast.
Oreo keeps all the apps I mostly use, about 10-15 of them, in RAM indefinitely. Pie just can't keep anything running in th background.
I check governor and its interactive, I think its the same i oreo?
