OTA updates after root - Moto G6 Play Questions & Answers

Hi everyone, i have rooted my g6 play few months ago and I'm happy with it, but i cannot install the newer OTA updates. The one im stuck on is the October patch, since than i haven't received anything?
Is it something to do with the root/bootloader/recovery/whatever, or that was the last update anyway?

If you installed TWRP you won't get OTA updates.
Either way if you want the latest firmware available you will need to flash it.
You should know 3 things before flashing.
Model number, codename, and software channel.
Those should be shown in
Settings/about phone
Looking for
Model: XT1922-x
Codename: Aljeter or jeter
SC: Retus, reteu, ....
Then downloaded firmware from https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto
There are some instructions at the end of this thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g6-play/how-to/pie-update-moto-g6-play-t3904886/page2
Or I have some general information in
Setting up and Using adb.exe and fastboot.exe https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/index-links-setting-using-adb-fastboot-t3495167
And
Moto Drivers, Firmware, RSD Lite, and other Unbricking Tools

Help regarding unrooting, restoring and accepting 7.1.1 OTA.

Hi. Im new here so please help me.
I have a Moto Z Play XT1635-02 on 7.0 with the 1st May Patch installed.
I unlocked the bootloader to root this device.
I rooted with this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z-play/how-to/correct-rooting-moto-z-play-feb-17-t3560268
Now i want to go back to stock firmware to accept the OTA i just recieved for 7.1.1.
My main query is that, i have RETGB device and its on build number NPN25.137-24.3
I can't find any firmware for RETGB software channel.
I did find the OTA for this, which i have downloaded through the moto ota link generator tool by erfanoabdi.
Now, can any one guide me on how to restore stock without messing up my device?
I have downloaded two retail firmwares:
1)XT1635-02_ADDISON_7.0_NPNS25.137-24-1-9_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml
2)XT1635-02_ADDISON_7.0_NPNS25.137-24-1-4_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml
Is it safe to flash any of these on my May patched device or should i somehow find the may patched firmware?
Waiting for your kind replies! :')

Just flash the below link and you will be on 7.1.1, and yes it is that simple.

Thank you!
I should flash this through TWRP?
Also after flashing this, the future OTA updates(If any) will be installed without any problems on my retgb channel?

Yes on TWRP no on future updates.. being there is not official release for you. Plus the next major update if it happens would not be till O is released which we would not see till way after the new year.
Once you unlock bootloader and root, no going back...

Thanks brother.
I don't seem to get why the RETGB firmware isn't released.
I literally can't find anyone except i guess two or just 3 people who have the same software channel.
Thanks again!
On the Verizon blackberry priv, there was a way to install the ROM with no Verizon bloatware, no rooting or anything.
Same with my T-Mobile s7 edge, is there something for the Verizon moto z play?

I don't think that its possible with the Verizon MZP.
There's no access for anyone to unlock its bootloader as of yet.
So there's no development for it either.
But who knows? Don't lose the hope! :'D

Thanks, just wondering because the blackberry priv bootloader was also never unlocked or ever rooted

Is it safe to flash April update image on May update to return to stock?

I'm currently on the May security update (NPN25.137-24.4) with TWRP and Magisk. I can't find the stock ROM for this update so I have no way to return to stock May update. Can I flash oem/boot/logo/recovery/system from the April update to "return" to the April update and take the OTAs that way?
I ask because I'm aware of the people downgrading to MM from Nougat and then taking OTAs bricking their device due to different bootloaders.
Afaik, downgrading to mm and then accepting ota will brick your device.
Wait for someone else to confirm.

hmmm. bump. the last stock rom before 7.1.1 is still not available anywhere.
To add onto this thread, why isn't there a 7.1.1 stock rom uploaded anywhere?
I bit the bullet and flashed the previous version to return to stock. It worked fine. Updating to 7.1.1.
Now... does anyone have a 7.1.1 stock image anywhere for me to be able to return to stock later? Whenever I try
fastboot boot twrp.img
It just locks up at the TWRP splash screen (using Alberto's twrp port, 3.1.1)

there's still no image of 7.1.1 for the Addison, maybe in a few months
you can downgrade avoiding the gpt.bin and (I believe)the bootloader.bin, after that you can download the OTA file from the forum and install it, check the forum for more info
are you sure that's safe? I felt ok going from 7.0 may update to 7.0 april update cuz I was sure there wasn't a change in bootloader or anything. But going from 7.1 to 7.0 to take the OTA sounds like the exact same scenario as ppl who went from 7.0 to 6.0 and then bricked their device when taking OTAs.
Try this, although it's from Verizon but works for other devices as well without any issues.

Yeah, that's for Moto Z (griffin), you'll want ROMs labelled as addison for Moto Z Play.
No sign of a 7.1.1 fastboot stock ROM for Moto Z Play as of yet, from what I can see.

Moto G6 Play - Australian model? I'm lost..

Hi all,
I am at a loss. I seem to have the only version of this phone in the world.I have a Moto G6 Play purchased in Australia. Under About Phone, it shows:
Model
moto g6 play (XT1922-1)
Software channel
retapac
Android version
8.0.0
Baseband version
M8937_26.30.05 7SR
JETER_ROAPDSDS_CUST
Kernel version
3.18.71-perf-g575351b
[email protected] #1
Thu Jan 10 12.07.33 CST 2019
Build number
OPPS27.91-177-2
I cannot for the life of me find stock firmware for it, and and unsure of how to go about resetting everything. I did manage to root it, using TWRP and sideload, didn't go through the process of making TWRP stick, but it's no problem to get it on when needed. I have unlocked the bootloader. The update to Oreo will not take, and I want to be able to, if I desire, to use a different rom. However, I'd like to update it though to Oreo.
I've scoured the internet, and less than a handful of matches for the model come up, but none in relation to safely doing anything with it.
Does anyone here know where the stock firmware lives? Or how I can manually update the firmware?
Cheers for any help!!!!

https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/aljeter/official/RETAPAC/ there you go. Use the stick firmware from that. Your device is the Aljeter not jeter but it's ok my guide works for your device as while. Just follow it. Don't worry about finding the build prop stuff unless your on pie. Just follow my guide

Thank you NinjaKira. Appreciate that.
Sooo many traps for people like me who only do this once every few years when they get a new phone.
I can confirm that aljeter RETAIL firmware can be used if bricked or boot-looped on updated PIE 9.0 XT1922-1 phones.
I have been unsuccessful in installing any GSI on the my Australian G6 Play.
NinjaKira Guide.
Step 4 - Could not backup. Probably me.
...and
Step 8 - Supplied TWRP 32GB would not let me factory reset, delete or format any phone partitions.
If anyone can get XT1922-1 working with GSI let me know.

stock XT1922-2 doen't autom.update, wrong software channel: upgrade w/o unlocking?

Hello, I bought a Moto G6 play XT922-2 (locked bootloader, retail) off a British seller. The phone looks new and works good, but it doen't receive any security or software updates it's stuck to Android 8.0 june 18 patch (OPP27.91.87, baseband R JETER_CUST).
I got in contact with Motorola and they said that while they can't take it in for assistance (i've got no receipt), and while the phone appears to be totally legit, they suspect the issue is the software channel, that's from an Italian carrier: "the software channel TIM Italy is not compatible with the version installed on my phone (Europe Retail Channel)". Apparently the seller used to hang around here
Now my questions are:
1. Can I use the stock .zip images found in mirrors.lolinet - official moto firmware to upgrade my phone without unlocking the bootloader and using a recovery, by using the standard bootloader and an external SD card for instance?
2. If that's the case, should I upgrade incrementally (like from OPP27.91.87 to the next one, up until Pie?) Should I continue using the TIMIT channel (the one installed on the phone) or could I choose to flash a RETAIL one, hoping to fix the Morotola automatic update process?
I haven't been modding for a few years, so any link to guides or procedures (if needed) would be very valuable for me.
Thanks in advance!

You can use whichever one you want. You don't have to go incrementally because they are not update zips. They are full firmwares.
You don't have to unlock the bootloader to flash official firmware.
You have either
1. Extract the zip and flash all files in fastboot (commands are in the flashfile XML) or
2. Flash the firmware with RSDlite

Update Firmware SM-G965U

Hi guys, I recently purchased a refurbished S9+ without knowing the model and it turned out to be a SM-G965U. After a failed software update ("Your current software isn't supported. Visit a service centre"), I've been trying to find a way to update the phone to 'official' Android 10. Does anyone know if this is possible or is the phone locked to Android 9?
'OEM Unlock' is missing from developer settings which (I think) means it can't be rooted with any common method. But is it possible to flash the phone with an official, working version of Android 10?
I'm willing to use any method required (within reason) to update the phone to a working version of Android 10. I'm aware of the "Extreme Syndicate" root method but the bugs / missing features rule it out for me. I intend to get a refund for the phone if it can't be updated to Android 10 so I'd really appreciate any answers to my questions.
Thanks!
You can manually update your phone by using Odin, and download the latest firmware available by using Frija

That's good news. Just to confirm, I can manually update with Odin WITHOUT unlocking OEM in the develop settings? Thanks for replying.
Just confirming that I successfully updated to Android 10 using Odin. The CSC I used is for an American carrier and the phone tries to register on its network but that's easily disabled. Had to be done after every reboot but it's a small price to pay for a working phone....
Hello Guys, I'm currently stuck on G965USQU3ZRLG
I made use of firmware.science to update my S9 plus to this point, but it seems there's no further firmware update for G965USQU3ZRLG to the next update file. Kindly assist, thank you.
