CPD1 bootloader to CQL1, tried with partialfirm stuck with CPD1 - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried flashing n910vvru2cql1 partial firmware in odin and phone info is still showing cpd1 as my bootloader.
history:
my phone was acting kinda buggy, wouldnt charge, turned off, got really hot about a year ago on a old version of RR and wasnt responding to anything usb so i threw it in a box and used one of my backups, a month ago or so, i moved some firmware files over by sdcard and flashed with twrp and it seems like it cleared up a lot of my issues.
I have been trying to get any rom past 6.0.1 on it and they just dont seem stable enough to run everyday so I found modest rom flashed that and it seemed pretty good except for the random restarts and lagg. i flashed flashpoint v4 kernel to try to clear problems up and it ran better but yet still kinda buggy so said screw it and flashed stock firmware cql1 kernel and over 2 days seems like everything cool except now im trying to get my bootloader up to CQL1 just so everything is unified and Sam Phone Info shows CPD1 for bootloader but CQL1 for pda, csc,baseband-radio
Are there any reason to upgrade bootloader since im already on 6.0.1 unlocked?
I wouldnt think so because my thoughts are its more like an efi bios/grub2/mbr which load the os and the kernel later gets lowerlevel access to the hardware????
Bottomline, I guess i would like to upgrade the bootloader, someone please clarify and help.
Thanks.

Sorry for responding late but in case anyone else is wondering, most partial firmwares that you see posted for our device model (even the ones posted in the international snapdragon rom threads that have Lineage, RR, and ported TW roms) do not contain the aboot.mbn file, aka bootloader. So it will not change our bootloader in anyway.
That's not say a dev or someone like myself who's just a beginner couldn't make a mistake and forget to remove it or maybe they don't know that it's supposed to be removed. So it would be best to stick with the tried and true links that have been posted of you're needing to update your modem. I know for certain the ones that have been posted by ripee, hsbadr, and me are safe, but I've never used not have heard anything negative about the other ones posted.
All that being said, you can update the SM-N910V bootloader if you'd like. Mine is updated to where it ends with CQI2 which is the penultimate update. If there is a difference between CQI2 and CPD1 (initial 6.0.1 bootloader) then it is a slight difference. Sometimes I think I just want to believe that tweaks and changes are working, especially if you put a lot of effort and time into it(which is required when you don't have much knowledge).
This was just posted recently;
VZW_NOTE4_EMMC_15_Chipset_Only_Bootloader_Unlock_U p/Dwngrade_Bootloaders_KK/LL/MM by jkruse
I haven't tried it yet but it looks much easier than the method I used, which is below;
For the folks that just like to tinker and break things....... How else you supposed to learn how to fix it?

I went from 4.3 to 4.1.1 with no issues.

My note 2 has always been stable on 4.1.1 stock and I debloated it myself. So when ever an update came out rather than risking my stable phone I would just flash the new baseband from it and keep 4.1.1, until tesh stopped updating his thread. Recently my screen cracked so I used my insurance for the first time. The new phone came with 4.3 and the knox bootloader plus the CMK7 baseband. I did a cwm backup on my cracked screen phone. Used odin to flash cwm onto the new phone, which did cause knox to show I did but who really cares since the phone is so far out of warranty anyway. Then loaded my cwm backup onto the new phone. What I ended up with is my nice stable phone with everything working plus the new baseband CMK7 stayed but the bootloader is still the new knox one. Everything is working just fine, so whats the big thing with everyone saying you cant go back from 4.3? I went from 4.3 to 4.1.1 just fine via cwm.
Cool story bro

If you use PC Odin to go backwards there are uncomfortable results.

How many of your posts are worthless? All of them? You sir are whats wrong with xda. The fact that every one thinks you cant go backwards from 4.3 just got proven wrong as long as you do it with cwm and not odin apparently.
There are multiple threads regarding your cool story.
The issue people are having is not being able to downgrade to 4.1.x OS. Its the bootloader that people were discussing and when coming from a 4.3 bootloader is impossible to downgrade to the 4.1.x bootloader/s.
Maybe doing a search in the future will get you some answers about the whole 4.3 bootloader and downgrading that you're taking about.
Good luck to you..
Ok but like I said I have the 4.3 bootloader and a 4.1 rom with no issues using cwm. So there is no issue with having a 4.1.1 rom and the 4.3 bootloader. If you have nothing constructive to add then dont post anything.
I mostly Lurk on XDA, But you sir are a different kind of stupid.
Clearly you haven't played with 4.1 long enough to see what the issues are, Its been well known that you can return to a older rom.
but knox has issues by doing so.

Lol long enough? How about since release day when I bought it? My phone is stable as can be with no force closes completely self deblaoted, working wifi tether, bunch of xposed modules and everything is pefect. For the most part the OS that a phone releases with is typically the most stable, there are obviously exceptions but I have been doing this since the G1 days and as soon as you start getting flash happy is when you have issues. Only thing I update is the baseband/modem. Also dont name call over the Internet its childish but then again most people on here are typically teenagers. Could you elaborate on the issues knox should be causing me but isn't?
This topic has been mentioned many times, there's no room for the useless bickering going on in here.

Have a great day!

Haven't flashed in years, is there anything I should know before....

venturing into these waters again? I have an old T-Mobile Galaxy S3 that I'm basically trying to turn into a gaming phone, just to play games on for my niece. However this thing hasn't been updated in forever and some of these newer games won't run on the firmware I have installed currently. I'm sitting on Android 4.1.1, running an old version CMW recovery. I just want to update to perhaps KitKat so that the games will run. As it stands now, trying to install leaves certain apps hanging on installation or simply incompatible with my version of android. I've been reading various threads in this forums and I'm seeing things about needing certain recoveries to upgrade, so forth and so on so I wanted a little expertise knowledge before I tried anything.
Would I be ok just picking a KK Rom, doing the wipe routine, flash and be good to go? Or have things changed and more steps are necessary, or newer versions of recoveries and what not are needed? Really don't want to brick this S3 so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I've found you need to update the recovery or you have install errors when trying to put a newer ROM on the phone. It might also be worth updating the modem even if you never use data or the phone features. So, yeah you kinda need to update everything or else you run into issues since a newer rom relies on features that might not exist in older firmware.
Thank you for the reply, my recovery was severally outdated and I wonder what took me so long to upgrade to TWRP. It's great. I was able to flash with no issues and glad I did.

Wipe to update/reflash...or ODIN.

I posted a thread a while back but I apparently posted the wrong type of thread. This one should be the right of the right type and in the right place.
On the Samsung devices I've had in the past, the boot loader was always a big deal when flashing new versions of android. I've had this tablet for a while now and haven't updated it since I bought it...and Odin flashed/rooted/installed TWRP on it.
From reading the megathreads, from threads, flashing threads, etc...it's not very clear if this is like the other Samsung devices I've had, or if this is like the EEEpad Transformer and Nexus 7 I had...and could move freely between android versions, stock roms...and nonstock ROMs, etc.
I'm running 5.0.2 and I play hearthstone competitively. I bought this for the display mainly, and now that I've loaded it with some crap, I'd like to flash a custom from/update. It seems my crap+samsungs crap saturates the ram quite well. Can I pretty much flash what I'd like? Or do I have to ODIN from stock to the latest build and then worry about number versions.
Also...I used to run an all that kept my TWRP version up to date. Goomanager I believe...but there are dozens of apps that claim to do this now...can I get a trusted suggestion?
Rooted on stock.
Android Version: 5.0.2
Kernel: 3.4.106 IronKernel V2.0 (mainly for s tweaks to boost audio)
Build LRX22G.T800XXU1BOC3
Forget about using an app to flash twrp.
Do it manually and be safe. Plus the official updates are lacking in features compared to the unofficial builds. Just check out the dev section and you'll see what I mean.
Thanks for the advice. And as far as flashing roms...can I pretty much flash what I'd like? Ex: go back and forth between Cm and stock builds...and between version builds while ignoring the boot loader? I'm basically trying to see if I've missed something critical since I rooted and flashed so long ago.

As long as you don't flash a firmware build that is incompatible with your current bootloader you can flash what you want back and forth.

Thats what I figured. I'm running the stock rom rooted. I don't know what boot loader I'm on, or how to get to the latest one. I have all the access in the world-- recovery, root. But there isn't a place here...or anywhere that clearly says what am going on. I have a charging issue and would like to foahh a new Kernel, and I might as well update in the process,...by there is no "Upgrade from Xxx while on the stock rooted ROM" guide. Plus my laptop has a crappy USB port, so If I need to Odin something on here, itd be quite the process.
Ive asked around for months, literally. I've never been in this position before. Have always kept up to date. But once you fall behind, in forums like these (especially given the fact hat there are multiple devices in this section), you need something explicit to get back where you need to be.
Last time I looked, there weren't any instructions. Ill look against today to see if I can just download the latest..zip of a 10.5 stock ROM from somewhere in the dev section and then wipe, and flash that. If you know if its alright to just wipe and flash a new ROM, lemme know. Or if I have to Odin to a new one in order to get a new boot loader before I flash the latest Kernel, which I think then one I'm trying to use his BOJ. IRONKernel. I use it for S Tweaks, the sound, and a few performance tweaks.
You have to flash the bootloader with Odin they are posted in the bootloader thread.
You can flash the stock firmware with flashfire.

Downgrading 6.0.1 to 5.1.1

Hi if anyone can help- I'm on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 4 after 2 Note 7's and a Note 3 before that on Biggin's so I've sorta been out of the root game. I want to downgrade from 6.0.1 to 5.1.1. I am downloading the full firmware for the Note 4 from further back in this thread (N910VVRU2CPA1) and am currently on (N910VVRU2CPG2).
From what I understand, I need to do a factory reset, then go to Odin and flash the firmware. I have Odin 3.10.7 and am downloading the N910VVRU2CPA1 as we speak. I see 'hsbadr' firmwares in his thread and the PIT file TRLTE_USA_VZW.pit which I'm not sure is compatable pit file for the specific 5.1.1 firmware or the necessary pit file is included in the full firmware and can anyone tell me if these are the right steps?are these the right steps Any information would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
@tjmethod by chance how did you process go, did you manage to root and unlock bootloader?

I bought the phone already with 6.0.1 on it and read that you cannot unlock/ root it with mm on it and can only be done after downgrading to 5.1.1 so I haven't done anything yet
I'm in the same boat...Coming from a n7. Bought a n4 on eBay...It's got 601. Want to root...Guess we need to downgrade....Is it possible?

Before you can start rooting, you'll need to be on 5.1.1 BPA1. If you're currently on 6.0.1, just download the BPA1 firmware from Sammobile, factory reset on 6.0.1, then flash BPA1 stock via Odin.

Hi thanks, I had called Samsung and talked to top tier tech support and was told that once the phone has been upgraded to 6.0.1., it cannot be downgraded. and that i need to search the rooting sites and try to find where someone has found a breach or workaround for unlocking the bootloader which will usually have a bounty but I dont know. top tier tech support has always been good. Do you think thats false it cannot be downgraded?

I am a little confused as to whether I've found the right firmwares but I've found the firmwares here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...mware-firmware-kernel-modem-recovery-t2942937
If I am downgrading to 5.1.1. which this phone was obviously on before, I don't know what this phone was on since it currently is on the PL1 build which are not one of the two 6.0.1. builds on this page. I don't even know if that matters.. Anyway, the two 5.1.1. builds are PA1 and OK3. Do you know where any other firmwares out there that might show my current one and the previous build that it came from?
Thanks-

Yeah they're out there but that thread hasn't been updated recently. Basically the order after pf3 is pg2, pj2, and then cpl1. The one you want, if your planning on rooting, is bpa1. Also, as far as your question in the op about the pit file, it should really only be used if absolutely necessary. It's in case your partitions have been corrupted for some reason and you need to repartition your device.
Edit- I was going to link to those other firmwares but they are buried in the thread that your already looking in. Either way they aren't necessary for you to unlock your bootloader, you can go straight from cpl1 to bpa1.

Hey thanks for confirming all this. So all I need to download and install is the bpa1 firmware via Oden with the AP button I think- I've got a few different versions of Oden on my pc. It's been a while since I've flashed firmware on a phone but I remember it was easy. So just save my pictures, any files, etc. on the sd card, remove it, then do a factory reset or when I put the setting into usb download mode, and flash the firmware this will automatically factory reset the phone? Also earlier today Verizon has been trying to push an software upgrade. After I unlock the bootloader and install twrp then flash a rom, do I need to somehow disable the update notice. I remember having to do that once with another phone.
What rom are you on? Thanks again for the Info-

Yeah that all sounds spot on. I would definitely do the factory reset before you start, but other than that your good. To block the updates, you can uninstall the SDM apps. There are 2 of those and you'll need root to remove them, but you can disable them without root with that debloater tool. The rom I'm currently using is kind of work in progress. I have a couple stock based roms in the dev section, one is stock_plus that has a stock feel with some mods added and the other is Modest Rom that is got some grace apps added and system ui mods. You can find them here and here if you want to check them out.

Custom kernels help a lot. The problem is it's kind of slim pickings for our specific model, but some of the international kernels work well too. Oscar kernel is made for the 910v so that's probably the most reliable but if your like me, I like to use a permissive kernel and Ram kernel is not a bad choice for that though it's not as feature rich.

I really dont know the difference... from what I remember a kernel is the layer between the software and the hardware- a key component of the os. I'm guessing the permissive ones can be used for different roms or firmware? You can probably tell I really don't that much about the root game. The last time I flashed a firmware was on my note 3 after I bricked it. Then rerooted and got on to biggins rom which was great ut I never understood or learned how to use xposed. Anyway, I downloaded Modest Rom, PJ2 _STOCK .tar and am downloading cpl1_tar but I know that once I flash bpa1 firmware which puts the phone back on 5.1.1. I see your roms are 6.0.1 roms, after I flash the bpa1, will the bootloader be unlocked? If so can I then just flash the cpla1_tar or is that not a full firmware? or use one of the two 6.0.1 firmwares from where I found the cpa1? Are the kernels different from 6.0.1 and 5.1.1 and where to find the downloads?? I appreciate the tips especially coming from a develpoer and i'm happy to make a donation- I'm not sure how?
Thanks again!

Anyway, I havent taken th plunge yet- once I get on to 5.1.1 then twrp, I want to go on to 6.0.1 but am unsure as to what point the bootloader is unlocked or exactly what to do to upgrade to 6.0.1 once I crack the bl. I just dont want to go through the dreaded set up everything twice.

bandwidth connectivity issue, (installing new radio possible fix)

i just encountered this issue the last few days and continues even after installing a new rom. im having trouble downloading files online or apps from the play store, its almost like the connection keeps getting disconnected and reconnected. im also having a problem playing a small online game called spades that worked fine a few days ago. its a card game so is not graphic intensive or take up alot of bandwidth.
another issue that ive just dealt with for months is rarely getting LTE data even though i should be getting according to the coverage map. im usually in wifi so it doesnt bother me too much but it got me thinking maybe i should look into installing another radio/modem which could possibly fix these issues. my current baseband is UCUFNJ2
You're running the latest modem for this phone, so there's nothing newer available. People have hard bricked the i747 on newer firmwares getting the bootloader and modem unmatched, so you have to be careful. We used to think the bootloader couldn't be downgraded at all post Knox, but it turns out you can downgrade as long as you don't go back a major version. There's a set of odin flashable files available. That's the only confirmed safe way I know to downgrade NJ2. Since you're already on NJ2, you have to stick with a 4.4.2 modem.
Safest thing to do, if you want to try out a different modem and just give the phone a fresh start would be odin back to stock NE4 4.4.2 using the files you can get from here.
From there you can test drive NE4 and see if it works any better. If you leave it stock it should offer to OTA to NJ1 and then back to NJ2 too, letting you fairly safely try out all the modems left available to you.
