In OneUI 1.0 there was an option of ALLOWED DEVICES in the mobile hotspot.
However I cant seem to find the same in OneUI 2.0. Anyone knows if that option is still available?
Have you checked in dev options for any toggles?
Yes. Earlier it was in the Mobile Hotspot options
But cannot find anywhere with the OneUI 2.0 update

Hmmm... Dang I hope 2.0 isn't going Apple on us...
Ha, are they safeguarding or limiting who has access to our hotspots...
These are the only settings I see. Not sure what they were before ONE UI 2 update.

Its basically when we want to limit hotspot to some of the added devices.
eg. We may have given access to 10 devices, but only want some to connect at that time.

Does anyone know where the Wifi settings are located? Maybe there is a way to disable authentication in that file if it exists.
Thanks!
Edit: Just to be clear on CDMA version it "Authenticates" with Verizon to make sure you are subscribed to their tethering plan before allowing you to use it. I am hoping to find a way to disable that authentication using either sqlite or some other method.

I meant some kind of hidden settings text file like a build.prop file.
After looking through with SQ_lite I found a 'preferred_cdma_subscription 1' setting but it cannot be changes because "Error 5-Database is locked" anyway around this?

The option for an open wifi hotspot is given to you in the menu (as provided by itsjusttim above). You don't need to modify anything.

On CDMA version it "Authenticates" with Verizon to make sure you are subscribed to their tethering plan before allowing you to use it.
Things you will need:
1) rooted phone
2) root explorer app (paid)
3) sqlite editor (paid - root explorer will direct you to it)
*** Now that cm9 is available I wanted to update this posting to let you know that these instructions are for stock gingerbread as well as the custom gingerbread roms. Cm9 has this option natively and you won't need to do this on cm9. Just want to save anyone from having problems with cm9. Now if your on gingerbread, go for it. ***
Now go to this directory with root explorer:
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
(You will have an option to open it with the internal viewer or SQLite editor, choose SQLite editor)
Select secure
Now locate tether_entitlement_check_state and change the value to 0 then save and reboot.
Now you can use the built in tethering without the pop-up saying that you don't have a tethering plan.
I hope this helps you guys out.
Disclaimer: As chrisd1a1 pointed out doing this is at your own risk as far as breaking your terms of service with at&t. I do not know if at&t can detect this or what the result will be if they do. I'm just throwing this out there as another option.

Yeah it does work great. But I'm not sure if at&t can see it being used. I've used it on and off for about a month and had no problems with them. Glad it worked for you!

This is exactly why I'm using the ClockWorkMod app. I've already been kicked off my unlimited data plan once for "unauthorized tethering" and it was hell getting back on the plan. The loophole to do so is no longer available, so I really don't want to get kicked again.
I'll have to wait and see how it works out for others. But good job on showing us the way to enable it. Thumbs up!
If I'm not mistaken, the tether_entitlement_check_state will not be available in the database until first attempt enabling tethering.
interesting thread. moved to DEV as this could be handy for future development.
the only disclaimer I'll put in is that it's at your own risk if you break any terms of service from your carrier....

I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't be able to detect it. It works the same way as it does on any other Android device.

Is a tethering app that works on the latest TW stock ROM. I'm rooted and trying the WiFi Tether with TrevEMod but can't get it to work. It starts but can't connect to it.
SOLVED with these setting in WiFi tether TrevEMod apk.

enable wifi encryption = checked
channel = 2
wifi driver reload = unchecked
wifi driver reload 2 = checked
access control = unchecked

The stock sprint tether app has been modded and works much better. The Treve mod is what was used before the native app was hacked.

Where do I get the stock tethering app. I was actually looking for that. The option doesn't show up in Sprint settings now as only have USB/Bluetooth.
Here is the thread for this mod but if your running a custom rom they all have it built in. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40013605
Use this if your on stock rooted. You would want the Odexed version.

It is going to be in the sprint hotspot app. Look in your app drawer for it. You are looking under settings. It should work if you flashed the correct zip. Open the app and hit on. The ssid and pass will be shown

I am not sure if the TreveMod is going to help. I have encountered your situation before where when you activate the wifi tether, everything looks good and dandy but the thing is it never broadcasts the SSID. I guess continue tweaking all the settings and let us know if you can get it working.

The wifi treve-mod is what bimmerdood has been testing with. This treve-mod doesn't seem to work on 2013 smartphones. It may appear that the mod works because it will attempt to start a wifi tether session on your phone but it doesn't broadcast the SSID of your phone to say your laptop or tablet to connect to.

OK, using the Wifi Tether - TrevE Mod - Auto model....
Everything seems to work except setting ad-hoc mode. Data is working but wifi not visible.
Let me play around with it a little more.
I know it's been said already but it seems something - whether in wpa_supplicant or F/W - is blocking ad-hoc mode.
I'm going to keep poking around in the time I have left today.
Well, not sure if this is progress.
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)

Hi everyone.
I was hoping someone would be in the know in terms of figuring out a way to change network mode on the new stock ATT kitkat rom. I am currently on Tmobile and heavily depended on the ability to change network mode to GSM/WCDMA preferred or auto on JB. I managed to enable this previously hidden menu by altering the build.prop file ro.networkmode to enable.
Unfortunately, now, even after making that same quick edit with text editor, the menu is no longer available and i'm stuck on weak LTE signals for calls.
If anyone knows a work around, or a step that I am missing please fill me in!
Thanks!!

Not working for me either i'm using FX editor with root add on. i double checked and it's edited to what i want and i still don't get networkin selection mode.
I used "build prop editor" changed
ro.build.target_operator=ATT to
ro.build.target_operator=OPEN.
And can change my network mode.
It also got rid of ATT in status bar changed to 4G icon.
Only negative outcome was sub tethering was disabled also. But I never use that feature.
