No root because the bootloader is locked.
No I haven't shadow, thanks I'll try that. And I bought it at Target fully unlocked. The boot loader is unlocked just haven't found anything that works with it yet. I'm gonna try shadows meathod now, I'll let y'all know how it turns out...

I have searched XDA thread's, I have combed through android central. Ever root method I follow including heisenbergs leads to boot loop. Let me just state I am not new to rooting and this is frustrating beyond words. I want to throw this damn thing against a wall but I know it's not the phones fault.
[Before anyone says it, I have searched XDA, Androicentral, several other forum boards high and low , believe me, it only ads to my frustration] So, regarding th title of the post: Should be as simple as flashing supersu in recovery right? Just after flashing the modified boot image? Can't get it to take. I've tried every step variant I can think of like flashing the vendor file which is new to me. Flashing a rom and allowing that supersu included do the rooting, in all different step orders too, so on and so forth - but all of these iterations I have tried leads to bootloop. I get stuck with no choice but to manually flash each partition back to stock just so that I have a phone to use.
After restoring my phone back to stock i am here: I have the most recent TWRP installed for a recovery (thus obviously my bootloader is unlocked too), I have not flashed the modified boot image yet but am aware I will need to before flashing supersu (and wiping cache) in recovery - last time I did it this way it did not work for me...
Can anyone point me to a simple tutorial of how to obtain root or maybe point out what I've done wrong above, please? I am at my wits end over something supposedly so simple. (Go ahead, laugh, call me names, whatever - I deserve it)
What boot image are you flashing? It's probably not compatible with the security patch you are on. Really you don't need to flash a new boot image as the SuperSU zip now patches it. So just flash SuperSU and enjoy root.

Thanks! So it comes in a .zip. Do I extract it or something? I have always just used TWRP to "install", then choose the zip file and "flash". Always worked. Should I have unzipped the package or something?

Just follow the instructions in the OP of the ROM you wish to flash.
For details on what the vendor partition is and which one to flash, look in the FAQ of the Pure Nexus ROM. I'm to lazy to to explain it myself or even link to it. Sorry, it's late here and locating it's kind of a pain on the mobile.
And for future reference it's an utter waste of time to root then flash a ROM. I'll explain tomorrow if you don't understand why.

The drivers and firmware got extracted into a separate vendor partition. Google doesn't provide source for vendor.img, just binaries. You need to flash a vendor.img that matches the ROM. If they don't match it might still work with some complaints, but it is best to have them matched. Look at your ROM to see which vendor.img they require.
Hey everyone,
I feel like I've looked EVERYWHERE and tried EVERY app and computer program to root my device. Is there anyway to root a LG G4 VS986 2BA at this time? If not is there some way I can degrade my software in order to do it? Or, am I stuck with this lousy phone the way it is?
Thanks everyone!

You can only root a VS986 after downgrading it to Marshmallow/13B.

"vs986 UsU"
I tried to root stock mm with Update-superSU.zip and twrp but no luck. you can flash the stock noget rom but I suggest deleting the modem.bin file in the zip file because you will boot loop. But if you do this you won't be able to make calls but you can use data this is still a work in progress
Here is the current active steadfasterX LG G4 UsU Unlocking thread for anyone interested in following it:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/unlock-unlock-lg-g4-device-usu-t3760451
I don't think I've seen any reports of VS986s working 100% after UsU unlock, so if you rely on your VS986 exclusively, you might want to do some research first.

By "Unlock" you mean (network) carrier branded phones correct?
So you MUST downgrade from 2BA to 13B to root? Via the LGUP / flashing a .kdz correct? The 1an stock firmware is compatable 100% the way it is? And then you root from there?
What is this magisk?

Make sure you have downloaded and installed the correct drivers for your new Z2 Force. Once the drivers are installed and your device is connected, open the device manager and make sure you don't have any yellow question marks next to your device. If you do, right click on the line and select update driver and let Windows do its thing to locate the drivers.
You also need to make sure you have adb and fastboot installed on your PC. You can you the simple adb/fastboot installer or download the Android SDK Platform Tools which contains arb and fastboot.
If you decide to download an app/fastboot installer, make sure you select the option to install it system wide.
Now, make sure you have connected your Z2 and open a command prompt window and type:
adb devices
It will start the daemon. Type adb devices again and you should see your device serial number.
Once you see your serial number type:
adb reboot bootloader
Now begin the TWRP installation process
Okay, be careful with your choice of commands when trying to install TWRP. With our device, when you first attempt to install TWRP, you want to "BOOT" the TWRP.img
You DO NOT want to flash the TWRP.img
You only want to BOOT the TWRP.img and then once booted to TWRP recovery, you will flash the TWRP installer zip that can be obtained from
www.TWRP.me webiste.
Flashing the TWRP Installer zip will complete the TWRP installation.

Nice work. This is an awesome device. There is still so much more to be figured out though. I have dedicated myself to figure out why we can't delete anything from the OEM Partition. I posted a question a couple of weeks ago but nobody responded with an answer or any ideas so I'm gonna do what I can to figure it out.

Note that I also managed to fix fingerprint feature and banking apps and to move whatsapp media folder to SD card.
Here is how I did:
How to root Samsung A3 (2017) - Guide
I successfully rooted my Samsung Galaxy A320FL following more or less this guide (I know, it's a video and that's annoying, but it's also very clear. And there is a text version linked in description), with some modifications though. I will...

Hope this helps, it took a lot of time to me to retrieve all the information, so I hope that the linked guide will be useful for someone!
So I tried to root my XA1 Ultra, but without luck. The bootloader is unlocked and twrp is installed but root? From all the methods the internet gave me I only have one left to try (unless I oversaw something). I use Magisk Manager so my option is to either get the boot.img file for my phone and let it patch or flash the zip thru the recovery which needs a data wipe and I am tired of setting up my phone just to see that nothing happend (I mean I can ignore this point). But I guess that the encryption system (also in twrp) is my enemy.
My question is: Is there a solid way to root my devices? It is stock rom and has Android 8.0 NOT 8.1.
thx
Flashing magisk zip file should not requirer a data whipe.
I have never heard you should whipe data but when you install twrp you need to reformat your device.
