My wife just got a 3a to replace her Moto G5+. It's pretty nice and much smaller than the original XL. Now that updates are done on the XL, I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade. Anyone move from the XL to the 3a and if so, what do you like and dislike about the newer phone?

I went from original xl to 3a xl around Thanksgiving. No complaints are all. At first i thought the lack of twrp on Android 10 and very few custom roms would be a huge issue, but the reality is that for me at least it runs so well on just rooted stock i haven't even been tempted to load other roms. Literally like 2 magisk modules and that's it.
Typical use i get about 7 to 8 hours screen on time with roughly 2 days between charges.
Since your on an xl now the physical size of the 3a xl is almost identical yet you will be going from 5.6" screen to 6" and from a 3450mah battery to a 3700mah battery. For me was well worth going with the 3a xl over the plain 3a. Got mine open box, new for 300 shipped, nothing but phone not a great deal as i use the old charger from my og xl

I also moved of xl to 3a xl here is my opinion
Upgraded from the original pixel XL to pixel 3a XL
can't have been better upgrade fixed everything I needed that wasn't on the Pixel XL
Better battery life
New and fast Updates
Bigger screen
Very affordable
Overall a great successor to the Pixel XL
10/10 would recommend
Upgraded from an original XL to a 3AXL. Also have no regrets. Most noticeable change is the improved battery life and screen time.
However I have heard of rumors of a 4A XL coming out, so it may be best to wait until that is released if you want something newer or want another price drop.
Everyone here keeps saying they went from the OG XL to the 3a XL. I went from the OG XL to the regular 3a since they are similar in footprint. I don't regret it & I didn't want the XL because it was just too big.

To big? it is physically almost the identical size to the og xl you upgraded from. So i guess your saying your og xl was to big then?

OG XL:
154.7 x 75.7 x 8.5 mm (6.09 x 2.98 x 0.33 in)
3a:
151.3 x 70.1 x 8.2 mm (5.96 x 2.76 x 0.32 in)
3a XL:
160.1 x 76.1 x 8.2 mm (6.30 x 3.00 x 0.32 in)
The 3a XL is much taller than the OG XL & that's what I did not want. While the 3a XL is practically the same width, it's taller & therefore perceived as bigger.

I agree. My OG XL looks massive sitting next to my wife's 3a.

Each to their own... The .2 inches taller to me is barely noticeable. I use the same belt pouch just adjusted the closing clasp slightly.
Also for me the bigger battery is a huge plus. I can get almost 2 days between charges and about 7 hours sot

OK my nexus 6 now has a crack screen and is slowly becoming unuseable. I am thanking able getting a refurbished pixel XL . any thoughts? good or bad.
Mate, it's a great phone and I had it for 1 year, and you would probably get a couple of years out of it. But in saying that, it's ugly. I upgraded to the pixel 2 xl, same great os and the phone looks so much better.

Was hoping my nexus 6 would hold out untill the new pixels came out and got a new or refurbished pixel XL 2. but my budget is what it is, the last 12 hrs. the nexus 6 screen is 55% purple.
I like my Google edition Pixel XL. It's what I have, and my wife has the Google edition Pixel.
I had contemplated about getting the XL 2, but went with the XL instead. I had some conversations with folks offline, and a discussion here on XDA too. I might upgrade to the XL 2 in the near future, and give my wife the XL, and my daughter my wife's Pixel.
I do like the Pixel XL and Pixel- but the Pixel's screen was too small for me. I think I would prefer the XL 2 screen a little more since it's at 6 inches- rather than 5.5 inches... heh.
Dear sirs....!
I'm here to ask if you would recommend me this device, and if you can, I would like to have some questions answered
First: does it feel old in your hand? How is it? Good?
Is it fast enough for everything? Any issue?
I'm coming from an htc 10, I want to switch to an oled display, how is it? Is ambient display good/worth?
Do Google camera mods give better camera performance than stock? Like pixel 2 software ports or s#!t
Would you give it a go or get a u11 / mi mix 2 / pixel 2
I'm interested mainly in camera, display and no lag experience
Thank you very much for your attention sirs
yes
if you have the cash, I'd pick the Pixel 2 Xl over the Pixel XL.
Nope, feature support for devices ends this year as it only has 24 months feature updates. Go for the Pixel 2 or 2 XL.
Based on what you are looking for...
Camera is excellent, though the pixel 2 apparently is even better.
Screen is excellent, big bezels but better than the LG panel on the pixel 2xl. Reportedly. I don't own the p2xl.
Speed is fine.

I thought Pixel 2 has an LG display, but the 2XL has a Samsung display.
Do I have that backwards?
ETA, Pixel 2 made by HTC. Pixel 2 XL made by LG.
Apologies
Yup.

I tell you, I am not impressed with the display.
I'm not much of a photog, so Canberra does not really matter to me.
I recently bought a used Pixel XL, to root and rom, because my daily driver (Moto Z2 Play) does not have much development.
My recent phones, in reverse order were Nexus 6P and Moto X Pure Edition.
All of those poses better displays than this XL. It is not very bright or vibrant. There is no setting to change.
I sure hope the 2 XL has a better screen, because I think that's my next.
I just picked up an XL and I would say it depends on what you get it for and how long do you want to keep it? My moto phone (big mistake, I'll never again buy a Moto) died on me after less then a year and I just need something to keep me going until the Pixel 3 comes out (I unusually wait a few months after release to see how the reviews pan out). So for me it doesn't have to be perfect. I like the screen.
I will mention that this is fairly subjective. I had the Moto 2 Play for a bit and ended up returning it. The display was fuzzier and not as sharp (what you would expect from a 5.5" 1080p display), side by side the Pixel XL (IMHO) has the much better screen.
I come from OnePlus 5 to Pixel XL and no regrets. I received mine yesterday. So far so good!
I have a 6p 32gb for now, thought about upgrading and I don't want to wait for the Pixel 3, so I have 2 options and I want your opinions.
In terms of storage, I don't really need 128gb, 64 is just enough, though the Pixel offer is only for 128
Pixel has better camera, faster updates, water resistant, and dual speakers. Oneplus is cheaper, has a bigger screen with notch ?, newer processor, and better battery life, also 3.5mm jack. So it depends on what you want out of your phone.
Pixel 2 XL. It's going to be updated for 3 years.
For me, the continued updates are very important.
If OP6 supported Verizon, I would move back to them in a second. The devs and support are as good as anybody, and they support bootloader unlocking. They've had some issues with customer support at times, like the cc fraud problem, otherwise, they are posed to continue good success. Camera isn't that big of a deal to me personally if the Pixel is slightly better. The case, near edge less top bottoms and sides make it more comfortable and better looking as well. Loved my 5t.
Would recommend pixel 2 XL.
I was in same dilemma too few weeks back. After looking at colleagues op6 and pixel 2 xl, went with pixel 2 xl. A very hard choice for me as choosing a single sim pixel 2 xl vs dual sim op6 (always favored dual sim before).
For me, I liked the pixel 2 xl display, sound and camera much better than op6. I also got info from colleagues that battery life us better in pixel 2 xl than op6.
I am happy with pixel 2 xl now.

Partly agree with your thought process.
Another thought process is high cost mobile may always outperform low cost mobiles overall. So pixel 2 xl will come out better overall anyway than OP 6 right.
Check out the review of OP 6 whose UI fluidity is worse than pixel 2 xl surprisingly even for me (expected better UI fluidity in OP 6 due to less resolution screen and better processor than pixel 2 XL). Other areas of speed tests do resulted in good in op6 though.

<sarcasm>Oh my, chime in on the horrid blue shift and terrible colors of the Pixel 2 XL.</sarcasm>
Better yet, don't. Both issues are totally overrated. If you really think the FHD display of the OP6 with notch is superior to the QHD screen of the P2XL without notch then whatever drugs you are on must be really good.

Hmmm, not sure about inferior or superior spec. But I like the display of pixel 2 xl more than op6 one (not sure it is due to resolution may be, people say 1080p is sufficient but my eyes are demanding more) My s9+ display on other hand feels good than pixel 2 xl though.
I think that Pixel's display is superior to OP6's, Google did a lot lately to improve the colors and reduce the blue tint. I had S8+ and when comparing those two, the amount of blue tint was the same on both. It was visible on Pixel a couple of degrees earlier, but that was pretty much it.
Maybe I am just lucky with my Panda 128GB...
Get the pixel 2 xl coz when the 3 comes out you can trade in the 2 for up to 500$ you'd only be losing a 100$ or so. That's what did i picked a 128 panda used pixel 2 xl in mint conditions off swappa for 570$.
I own both. I'm selling the op6. I told myself I'd never try another option device but bought one anyway. Every opportunity device I've owned has had some odd hardware issue and none of them were the same. Also the UI had some odd behaviour even though it looks stock.

I am not from the us as you can probably see
Hi, which phone would you go for the pixel 3 XL or pixel 3a XL if they were both the same price? Which they are in the UK since the pixel 3a XL is £469 BNIB and the pixel 3 XL is on eBay for around £450 refurbished.
The issues I have with the pixel 3 XL seem to be all the bugs that seemed to have plagued it since it’s release such as lagging apps and poor ram management which was addressed in recent updates but many users have still complained about on going issues. Another issue seems to be for myself is the notch looks really ugly I wonder if it’s an real issue when using the phone daily.
The clear positives are just the raw power the phone has due to a better processor also it has an IP rating. Plus the build quality is better.
The Pixel 3a XL seems to perfect for my needs but the only downsides I see are the fact it runs a much less powerful processor which doesn’t seem to be bad when used on a day to day basis but I wonder how well it will hold up in the long run let’s just say in the next two years.
Any thought on which phone I should pick? The most important aspect of the phone for me would be it’s longevity.
Thanks for reading
For me its bigger battery i had the pocophone before that and honelsty the performance on the pixel 3a xl is better that the poco, also the battery lasts me 3 days with sot 7 hours minimum.

Tbh the 3a/xl will be plenty for the next 2 years. Some people are still using the OG pixel and even Nexus 6p to this day.
Not to mention notches suck and I personally refuse to support it which is the main reason why I got the 3a xl over the Moto g7 plus.
I haven't used the Pixel 3 XL. But I have used the Original Pixel XL, the Pixel 2, and also other phones like OnePlus 5. However, I have to say, now that I'm using Pixel 3a XL, I find Pixel 3a XL to be the best Phone I have ever used so far.
That's a hard question and one that ultimately the user will have to decide for themselves.
Personally I haven't used the original 3 series, but the 3a XL has been a great phone for me and I can't see myself trading it for a 3 XL unless I was able to test drive the 3 XL to make sure it was better before getting it.
- I never think "this is slow" or "studdery" except when trying to use Facebook via Chrome (the Facebook app works great which leads me to believe it is a Facebook issue, not a phone issue).
- The battery life is great and better than the 3 XL
- The main camera is the same as the 3 series. Of course you do loose the wide angle front camera and the second rear camera, so if those are "must haves" then you know your answer
- The 3a doesn't have the extra photo processor, but this just means the pictures take about 3-4 seconds to process instead of nearly instant on the 3 series. I see the "processing" notification sometimes when reviewing just taken pictures, but I have never been annoyed at it.
- The 3 series comes with free unlimited photo backup until 2022 of original quality sized files. The 3a only allows unlimited backups of compressed size (which is normal and not an exclusive benefit of the 3a).
- The 3a will have a longer update lifecycle.
Those are just a few of the difference I can think of off hand.
Thanks for all the replies. Just wanted to add what I want in a phone is everything that the pixel 3a XL has but the only concern I have is the processor used. Now I know in terms of day to day usage I won’t find it slow but my concern is how well do mid range processor do in the long run? Are my concerns unwarranted?

I personally don't see any real difference between my Pixel 3a XL and my old Pixel 2 in terms of performance. So, the processor shouldn't be a concern.
And the Camera on the Pixel 3a XL is top notch!

I use my phone to game with sillent hills on the psp emulator that was the most demanding game i ever played on poco ,it run smoothly on pixel 3a xl ,just make sure to put the opengl option and not vulkan cause the phone has a decent graphics card the 615 can handle anything.
Hi all
I have an option to get this phone for 370$, and wanted to know if u recommend buying this 1 although 4a may come out soon
Appreciate ur input in advance
Peace
Not for $370, no. Some rumors have the 4a coming out around $350-400. The one thing with the 3a XL though is unmatched battery life. The 4a wont touch in in that regard. The 4a is also going to be a lot smaller physically and have a slightly smaller screen.
If you could get a 3a XL for ~$300 or less I would do it but not at that price.
Thank you so much for the useful info
Bought 1 black and 1 purple Pixel 3a XL from Best Buy unlocked for $319.99 each on 5/22/20 so pretty sure $370 is not a good deal.
