You have to enable the free visual voice mail on your LTE account. Comes with all LTE data packages, but usually doesn't come enabled. Just give CS a call and tell them you want to enable visual voice mail on your account and then open the app and it should work.

The csr said it is on there and provisioned correctly. I can only call my voicemail.
Because I used the AT&T messages app they have to make a case for them to remove it from my account. This is frustrating. Only way they could of changed it was for me to lose my unlimited data plan. This is so annoying.

I'm using the regular "Messages" app that came built into the phone. I kind of like having the voicemails and texts all in one place.

I'm not following. You used the "Messages" app built into the phone and now they're telling you that if you want to use another app to get your voicemails you will lose your data plan? Or was it another app you used?
I use an app called YouMail. It is pretty minimal, and gives you email updates with transcripts of the VM.

I was using the "at&t messages" app not the messaging app thats in between contacts and the internet icon. I was told it was conflicting with my visual vm thats included with my unlimited data plan. I was called back by another AT&T csr a few minutes ago and they provisioned it correctly. But what they had to do is remove my data plan, then remove AT&T Messages from my account. Then re-add my unlimited data with visual vm. That's what I was told and now it's working fine. I don't like the AT&T messages app because it overides the main notification settings.

use this. Much easier to set up, way to import contacts right from my phone, and the answering service is so cool. The smart choice actually says your contacts name if it is uploaded to their website, so it would say "hello LudoGris, xxx isn't available right now..." if I called you.
Make sure your not connected to wifi when you use vvm app.

They have to completely remove your data plan that's tied to your visual vm. And if you set up AT&T messages then they have to remove that also. Call again and keep trying. It took 3 hrs of talking to a csr before they made a case and I was called back with the fix. Good luck.

Im confused. I tried that Att messages app and didnt like it. Im assuming after you called CS that when that visual voice mail icon showed up? I dont have it. So I have to call CS and tell them I want the visual voice mail that comes with my LTE package? Crap..i have unlimited too...
Here's a question.... with the ATT Messages app, when it gives you a text transcription of a voicemail, do they charge you for a text message? I don't have a text plan so I pay per text and am a little worried about this. I get a lot more voicemails than I do texts.
Just switch to Google voice and be done with it IMHO.
OK, I just called again and after spending about 30-40 minutes, we have some progress.
First off, I too have the unlimited plan and was hesitant about having them mess with this. According to the CSR I dealt with, she never had to mess with my data plan. She said all she had to do was have me remove the app (AT&T Messages) from my phone then have me turn my phone off. At this point, she removed the AT&T Messages service from my account, removed voicemail from my account, then added visual voicemail to my account. Once I turned the phone back on, the AT&T VVM app opened up after a minute or so and started going through the setup process. She said she never touched the data part of the plan.
I have the AT&T Visual Voicemail app working now. The only issue I am seeing is when I get a voicemail, I first get a notification from the phone app (which if clicked will call your voicemail) then I get a notification from the VVM app (which if clicked will open the app and let me listen to it). I did notice that a few seconds after the VVM notification appears, the phone notification gets deleted automatically.
So, it is working how I want it to, other than getting two notifications for each voicemail. Considering I don't get many voicemails, I can live with that.
Hope this helps others.

Second is the pull down notification bar.
Third is the actual app itself.

AT&T Visual voicemail
It is a free app on the market. I downloaded it. Had a CR configure my account to have visual voicemail enabled and works like a charm.
Unfortunately, the voicemail button on the keypad still calls your voicemail. Any way to have the voicemail key open up that app instead ?
Wasn't quite sure where this would go in the forum. Feel free to move it Mods.
I recently purchased a Nexus 4 from the Play Store and started a Monthly4G prepaid plan through T-Mobile. Everything works perfectly except for Google Voice. I add the T-Mobile number to the forward settings in Voice and it sets up calling just fine, but when I attempt to send text messages I get nothing but messages being "queued." I attempt to view messages in my inbox on the device I get an error saying "Network Error." Ever since adding this number I haven't been receiving notifications for new texts in Growl Voice and the Google Voice website doesn't load my inbox or settings either. Any ideas?
Thank you.
I may be wrong here, but I thought I read somewhere in the forums that Google Voice doesn't work with pre-pay T-Mo

This ^^^^ is your problem. You won't get gvoice to set up on tmo prepaid. Sorry man. Unless something has changed in the past 3 weeks.

I'm using it on mine no problem. Must use latest 4.2 compatible version. Also have to call Tmo and tell them to disable voicemail on your prepaid account then all messages will forward.

I've already called T-Mo and all that. I've had my voicemail disabled. It is more of an issue with the site's inbox not loading. It gives me an error "There was an error with your request. Please try again" and messages are constantly being queued on my Nexus 4 and 7, more so than usual. This all started when I added the N4 to my Voice call forwarding register.
What? Google voice works just fine with monthly 4g. You don't get conditional call forwarding but that's not the issue the OP is referencing.

Anyone else having problems where Google voice keeps giving notifications for old voice mails when the option to show voice mails in the native phone app is enabled?
So annoying. Every 12 or so hours, it pops up with a notification for 6 voice mails or something, all of which are old. I even make sure they were shown as read in the ap, and I played all of them and made sure they were read in the phone app.

YES YOU CAN. Why is this rumor getting started. I 100% use Google Voice on my Pre-paid TMO $30 a month plan.
Disable voicemail by calling T-mobile. That way your T-mobile voicemail doesn't kick in before your GVoice mail does.
Use the Google Voice app to send and receive text messages. This way you 100% know things are getting to you. I by-pass the built in messenger app which may be why some people are having issues.
That is it.

+2 been using it since the plan launched.
When you first get the plan call T-Mobile. Ask to have voice mail disabled (there is no conditional forwarding, as has said), and also have them remove web-guard. When someone calls your phone, if you don't answer, google voice should time-out after x rings and take the voice mail (this is the reason you disable it on T-Mobile, or else T-Mobiles system will take the call).

When I try to enable GV voicemail by entering the code *004*GV Number here# I get a error message. I got this on two different Android devices. What am I missing? Are you saying once I disable the TMo voicemail this code should go through next time?
The google voice number is not the same as my mobile number if that makes a difference.
Unfortunately, i'm unable to send text messages and i'm wondering if it has to do with entering that code number through your dialer. Worked like a charm before when I was not on a prepaid plan.

You just don't worry about any of that. No need to dial anything or enter any codes.
Someone dials your google voice number, it rings until your google voicemail picks up. Simple as that.
If someone dials your pre-paid number, it will ring and ring and ring and ring.
To send texts just use the Google Voice app.

Now I got T-Mobile, I've been having tons of issues. More often than not, my phone no longer ring when call mage to Google Voice.
Anyone see this issue? And yes, I stop Google Voice app and the Web interface with T-Mobile number.
Not only do you have to uninstall google voice back to Carrier you must go on your Google account and disconnect from your account.
Of course google doesn’t make it easy to find. I cannot remember the correct spot to change the options and the help was not very good.
If you don't change google then when anyone calls the caller gets a message that the google subscriber is not available. That is why your phone doesn't ring.
Make sure all phone settings have T-Mobile number. Sometimes google voice doesn’t clean up nicely.

To my surprise, the AT&T Visual Voicemail app can't be downloaded from the Play Store (a search for it won't find it). The att.com website does not show the Note 4 in its list of compatible phones (it does show a Note 3).

Left with not choice but to contact carrier. They've removed into my phone in an attempt to set it up and it fails for them too. Of all the apps I have I love my visual voicemail the most.

if you are so inclined you could always use Google voice for visual voicemail.. that's what I do.. I like transcribed emails for my voicemails.. also comes with a link to the audio file so you can play it back.

When y'all say y'all can't get GV working are y'all speaking specifically of the voicemail or voicemail to text part? I have an AT&T M9 and GV works for me, including texting. I have voicemail set to use my carrier voicemail, so I can't be sure of it working properly.
AT&T VVM app is in the play store.

It used to work for me too, but no more. I think it's an att issue and nothing to do with a particular rom. Att won't take the mmi code to enable gv. I've contacted att support, but they couldn't figure it out and actually made it so no voice mail worked, so once I got att visual voice mail working, I decided to leave well enough alone.
If on a 5.0.X rom, I think you can get the att app from the play store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.att.mobile.android.vvm
Edit. Just read your on 5.1. Fortunately for me I backed it up before I upgraded. I've attached the app folder. Hopefully it will work for you.

Thanks!
I tried flashing it in TWRP, but realized it's just a zipped file.....I then extracted it and installed the apk..... What do I do with the other files?
It installed and let me record my greeting, and even sent me the confirmation "test" message......But I am having problems now when people call me and it goes to voice mail, it says something like "This call could not be completed, please try you call again later". Do I need those other files somewhere in my phone?
[Question]
Do you need to register your new phone with Google Voice? I've used GV on my M8 for the past 18 months, or so..... Is it still linked to that phone, or just my number?

Check use a file explorer to look in data\app\com.att.mobile.android.vvm. Installing the apk might have created the folder structure for you. Otherwise, just copy the contents of the folder i uploaded to that location and reboot. That's probably NOT the problem, but would eliminate that as a possibility.
As I said before, I have had so many problems with ATT support as it relates to VM. Once, after i was on with support, the guy did something and my voicemail didn't work at all. Other times, they set it up so all of my calls got forwarded to ATT vm without even ringing my phone.
AT&T VVM is good enough. I do miss the transcription service with GV though.

[UPDATE]
After spending about 2 hours on the phone, spread out over 5 calls, to At&t.... I have working At&t VVM using the extracted apk you gave me!!
The first 4 support people kept resetting my voicemail, but the M9 has the new "HD Voice" system, they were missing this step in the reset and it was still forwarding to my old Google Voice number, saying it was not an active number. Once he reset it, I rebooted my phone and they made a test call and it all worked.
