Wi-Fi calling on pixel 2 XL in Europe - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I have a Pixel 2 XL in Android 10 build QQ1A.191205.008 and there is no option to enable Wi-Fi calling.
I know that the phone is capable of Wi-Fi calling but for some reason that option does not exist in system settings
I am in Greece and in Vodafone network which is providing Wi-Fi calling
And help would be appreciated.

Is the device itself on Vodafone, or are you using a different carrier? Your carrier has to support it for the option to become available, and even if the carrier does there is a possibility the carrier's network doesn't recognize the device as being capable of the feature, especially if it was bought from Google.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes it was bought in the USA.
The ROM does not belong to a certain carrier
It's the official universal room
I haven't root the phone.
It gets all the updates over the air.
A standard factory set phone.
I conducted Vodafone and apparently they don't support yet Android 10 ! Although they state that the Samsung s8 and newer and the iPhones are supported (they don't mention any Google phone)
Anyway I thought that the option to enable Wi-Fi calling should be available on the system settings of the phone.

ROM is irrelevant as this is a carrier thing. As you found out the carrier you're using doesn't yet support the feature. Thus you will have to do without. The P2XL won't have the option to enable WiFi calling until the carrier supports it. Example: my carrier (Straight Talk) doesn't support WiFi calling and I do not have the option in my settings.

Okay crystal clear
Thanks a lot

Question for AT&T LTE users

So I get LTE but as soon as I get on a call signal goes to H and I cant use data/apps while on the call. Am I using the wrong APN settings, or wrong radio maybe? Any settings help would be great, or if you can confirm also. Thanks.
Mine nexus 6 did same thing. I'm not sure that the data still work or not but everytime I on call I see LTE Icon change to H like you said
It's one of 2 things.
Either VoLTE is not turned on on your device
Or ATT does not support VoLTE in your area.
First one is fixable. Second one is not.

Then that would explain that I would think
LTE is data only, so when u go on a voice call it will got to hsdpa or 3g bc that is voice and data, so it is normal

Please don't spread information that's no longer the 100% truth. AT&T, Verizon, and (for a while now) T-Mobile offer calling over their LTE network, dubbed VoLTE (Voice over LTE). It allows voice packets to travel over the LTE network instead of legacy/3G and older networks.
The way the standard it set up, devices made more recently have software and hardware support for it, but as carriers have certification processes for their network, not all devices work cross-carrier. Most notably, iPhones (bleh) work cross-carrier because of the way their network configuration is provisioned (device identifies what network it's on, and downloads carrier configuration for that particular network). Some Android devices work cross-carrier (Nexus 6P and 5X), but the manufacturers of Android devices designing unlocked devices for some reason aren't certifying on AT&T, maybe because of cost or complexity.
Therefore, there are 3 main reasons VoLTE won't work on a device:
1) Not in a VoLTE area
2) VoLTE not enabled (this could encompass the option simply being disabled per the user)
3) VoLTE being restricted (AT&T restricting access because the device isn't certified, and/or the device not being capable)

So how do you enable on the OP3 with AT&T?

You can't, only thing that would remotely make it work is if your imei was set up as a HDVoice supported phone in AT&T's system (s6, s7, note 5, note 7, iphone, etc). Though that likely won't work either since it'll try to provision the VoLTE and fail and yea.
AT&T does not use "Standard" VoLTE, so even if the phone supports it (like the OP3 does) and they were to allow the IMEI, it still wouldn't work. Phones have to have specific code from AT&T to do their HDVoice (according to their own customer service postings in their forums)

Wifi Calling

I bought my Pixel XL from Google Store. I'm on the AT&T network. I can not find the option to enable wifi calling anywhere (it's not grayed out - on my phone, it doesn't exist). I've tried the two locations I believe its supposed to be. Under Settings - More - and/or under phone - settings - call.
I'm not using a custom ROM. I do have my bootloader unlocked and the device is rooted.
What's up with that?
In the phone diagnostic menu *#*#4636#*#* , there is a WiFi calling provision toggle, is that switch on? I'm personally on Verizon, so I'm not sure WiFi calling will work on att
I think AT&T does not support Wi-Fi calling on Non Branded phones.

This is correct.
Think it would ever be possible to fake your phone to look like some type of ATT branded phone to get wifi calling working?
I'm not sure on what type of security/authentication methods they use to allow wifi calling to work properly.

VoLTE support

Hi guys,
I just wonder if M9 supports VoLTE calling. My carrier told me that HTC M9 will never support this function because I have to have stock rom literally from my Vodafone Czech carrier. But it seems to me that in that case nobody with alternative roms could use this function so my question is..does it support VoLTE if I will root my device and install some patch what I've seen here for volte support or do I have to install another Rom which supports VoLTE or any other ideas? Does my carrier have to really support precisely my model or is it just software issue on my side? I have newest Android 7 stock. Thanks for all replies!
Yes, the M9 absolutely supports VoLTE. Disclaimer: I have one on the desk next to me fully operational on a large carrier in the USA.
Given that, your network and your device work in unison to make the 'magic' work. You'll need an IMS APN programmed in the device, and one in the LTE network that validates the new default (signalling) bearer. My suggestion is to chat with a knowledgeable tech support rep. at your carrier, and be sure to ask if there's extra charge for the VoLTE. Since carriers understand that legacy circuit switched infrastructure has a limited future, they *should* be willing to move all your voice/SMS/MMS over to the IMS/LTE network they've invested in.
Best of luck.

Thanks for detail info. VoLTE is new in our country so I couldn't get any tech info even from my carrier. And I already found out that VoLTE isn't extra charged and even video calls are for the same price so that's great but I have to find precise info about IME apn setting. I hope somebody tell me precise settings. Thanks for info again!
Volte is carrier dependent. Both phones must be capable, both carriers must be capable. The problem is that Volte is not cross carrier at the moment so you and the person you're calling must both be on the SAME carrier, the carrier must be Volte capable, both with Volte compatible phones, both in a 4g signal area.
4g is a data only protocol with voice capabilities "patched" in to it. 4g was NEVER designed to carry voice signals so don't expect carriers to be in a hurry to implement Volte when 5g is just around the corner.
As to the answer to your question. Yes, The m9 is in fact Volte capable so it is purely down to the carrier investing in new technology. Carriers are NOT obliged to roll out Volte in any case. It is purely a case of demand vs supply. We already have a perfectly good 2g-3g infrastructure for voice and data so 4g only offers better data connections depending on signal strength. I think a lot of carriers are going to hold back for a while until the technology becomes proven or more so, an ISO standard is put in place.

Thanks for answer. My carrier already support VoLTE technology and we also have around 95% coverage of LTE infrastructure and I know both must have VoLTE support and LTE connection.
What I am trying to is use this technology if I am able to. My carrier told me it's not possible because my phone is old for it but I've read few articles that it's possible.
What I don't know if I need some option in settings (rom implemented settings) to activate it because I don't have any inside, on the other side when I go to cellular info through *#*#4636#*#* I have info about IMS and also about VoLTE what I can switch off.
So generally is it enough to find out how to setup IMS APN in settings to run VoLTE on my device or do I need also ROM which have implemented in settings VoLTE on/off?
Maybe I just don't get it correctly but I would like to have precise info what I need to get from my carrier to set up IMS APN on my device to run VoLTE if it's possible of course.
Hope it is understandable.
So no need to any special futures implemented in Android. It's enough to set up APN for IMS and LTE bearer.
The only device that needs adjusting for volte is the dev edition, i believe.
Otherwise this device is completely volte compatible. Maybe your carrier representative is confused..
Beamed in by telepathy.
So I finally talked with someone who knows more technical info from my carrier but he told me that it's all about radio bearers, channels of phone (don't know precise terminology) and my phone has to be unlocked for that channel, so it's kind of firmware problem because in our country isn't firmware unlocked for that channels yet. And nobody knows if it will be. Also each carrier has different channel for that and that's why it's incompatible with the same phone from another carrier.
I've seen also some utility to change that radio settings over PC with debugging mode on but don't know more info about it. So I guess I can try this for a last option.
If your phone is locked to carrier and branded then there is a possibility they've switched volte off but if your firmware region is 401 then your carrier rep is talking s**t as all 401 wwe (unbranded) phones are volte ready and it is the carrier who is lacking the technology.

Thank you, I don't have for now rooted M9, because I bough it recently and until now I tried to find out all option if it's possible in some way but I'll do it and try it later. Thank you very much for your help!
So I've tried and it doesn't work, no VoLTE , no Wi-Fi calling, so I am not sure what could be wrong. I can see setup in system and it's enabled but none of this works. Is there any log or anything what I can explore why it's not working? My carrier has a app for Wi-Fi calling so I wouldn't need it as a part of system but there could be setup which I need also for VoLTE if I get it right. Or is there any other flashable file for trying?

How to enable VoLTE on Pixel?

Hi guys.
Let me elaborate my question.
1. I am totally aware that VoLTE on Android at the moment generally requires the handset to be from the carrier, or from the same region as the carrier for it to have the correct VoLTE (and VoWIFI) settings.
2. I am also totally aware that since Android 6.0, there actually has been a provision to allow carriers to send carrier settings to the user. I also know that this isnt being widely used.
After my ownership of my Pixel XL, I moved to a HTC U11, which I have flashed a custom ROM. This custom ROM managed to have the carrier settings for VoLTE for my carrier baked in.
I am keen on getting a Pixel XL2, so Im keen to see what the Pixel community is doing to enable VoLTE on networks that arent stocking the Pixel or Pixel XL.
Here in Australia, both generations of the pixel seem like they will be Telstra exclusives. and I am not inclined to go on their network!
Thanks for any assistance!
I use it with T-Mobile, only Verizon stocks it in the States. Volte works fine for me. Nothing i needed to do other than to setup the phone with the Sim card in the device.
Same here, got it with my T-Mobile SIM card.
This worked for me. Go to dialer and dial
*#*#4636#*#*
Phone Information
Turn on VoLTE
Turn on Video Calling
Turn on Wi-Fi Calling
Exit
I'm on Oreo 8.1 on my P2 XL, looks like it's already enabled. I'm on AT&T.

Change carrier. AFAIK you'll never get enhanced LTE services using a non-AT&T branded phone on their network. Once I switched my pixel xl to T-Mobile things like that and wifi calling worked fine.
My condolences to your Pixel XL 2. I was in a Verizon store the other day just to check out PXL2. The blue tint when turning the phone horizontally - horrific. Also, barely faster than my Pixel XL, even if you care for that kind of thing (speed.)

It means your operator is not offering VoLTE, or, as in my case, Pixel XL is not approved by the operator. I have VoLTE on my SIM enabled and working with operator approved devices but network rejects Pixel as not compatible one.

Operator offers VoLTE and it doesn't filter IMEI like in some cases. Other not approved devices (e.g xiaomi, oneplus) managed to enable volte via shortcuts. I am asking for a similar workaround. --thanks
Of you're on Straight Talk you're SOL. They don't offer it even if you're using a Verizon SIM
If you had geryed provisioning options you need to use magisks voenabler. a did it right now on december pie update. Now I have all enabled. Just waiting for operator to enable volte for my number. I wonder it will active.
Hi, my carrier does support VoLTE but the Pixel is not on its whitelist.
When dialing *#*#4636#*#* and going into phone info, the switches for "VoLTE Provisioned" is off and greyed out, but at the top of this screen I see "Voice Network Type: LTE". Does that mean I am getting VoLTE? I cannot see any other sign or symbol when calling. (I know some devices have a VoLTE symbol either in the status bar or during a call)

Wifi calling

So is it possible to enable wifi calling and/or VoLte on stock 8.1 rooted or any firmware of the pixel without being on Verizon? I am on AT&T so just wondering if there is a mod or something I can do to enable it.
Magisk has a module that can do that; VoEnabler .... this module will enable access to the features in the pixel, in Dialer, settings, etc. * but that doesn't mean you can actually use them;
First, check that your carrier/service actually supports the feature .... You can check with a secret code though; in Dialer;
*#*#4636#*#*
Then navigate to "Phone Information"... from there scroll down;
you should see the stuff for VOLTE, Wifi Calling, Video Calling, etc. If it's enabled then you may be good to go..
but if your carrier doesn't support it - enabling it via VoEnabler will do nothing to change that.
Also, I don't know about the US, but in Canada - some carriers (under some plans) do charge extra for this stuff.

Sort of this. Basically AT&T will not support VoLTE or WiFi calling on any unbranded unlocked devices brought onto their network. Never worked on my T-Mobile Note 4 nor my Google purchased Pixel XL. I was a long time subscriber to their service but once my dependency on MMS messaging increased I had no choice but to switch to another carrier. I wound up on Verizon after a brief time with T-Mobile. Both support full functionality of these devices.

Before installing magisk I dialed that number and they were all greyed out, I installed magisk installed the module and now VoLte and Wifi calling are both enabled in that menu and in the settings menu. I tested wifi calling and it worked. So maybe just need the module installed and it will work. That's what worked for me.

Cool. glad to hear my advice helped... but also using the secret code in the Dialer would've verified if your carrier supports it on their network, beforehand; that's why I posted in that step...
also, just as a reminder; I'd make sure that there aren't any hidden fees associated with using those features, I don't know much about US carriers; aside from that they are (generally) against Net Neutrality.... But I know with my particular carrier, in Canada; If i wasn't using the plan that I am on; they would be charging me extra - and it would add up quick... so best to double check, maybe.

But I know with my particular carrier, in Canada; If i wasn't using the plan that I am on; they would be charging me extra - and it would add up quick... so best to double check, maybe.

I came to this phone from a s7 edge that had VoLTe and Wifi calling on it never got charged for anything, would it be different with a non carrier phone?

I have no idea: I live in Canada and have never dealt with US carriers ~ that's something that you will need to verify on your own. Some may allow it; some may not... you guys do things quite a bit different south of the border, so I just don't know....
You should be able to find that out in the support/QA area of your Carrier's website ~ if not there, you can ask them directly.
but yeah, obviously, if it was working on your S7 - then your network supports it....
Hello, I am on Vodafone UK, recently my area is getting poor 4G coverage so the vodafone tech guy asked me to shift on wifi calling inside the house. He enabled it from carrier perpective but I have to enable it on handset as well. I struggled to find the option. Now using the secret code above I can see I have wifi calling option greyed out. btw, I am on stock android 8.1. What is the best and least intrusive way to get the wifi calling working on my handset.
I am not a developer but have experience with root on previous devices. If I have to install Magisk( is there a non-root option?) what module etc I need to install to get this working please..

Hi Praveenjohri - did you get this to work?
I too have a Pixel XL and on Vodafone UK; again the wifi calling option is greyed out.
Any layman guides as to how to Flash magisk and go about enabling this? Thanks in advance
