Hi guys,
I was using Pure Nexus for a long time and didn't have an issue with this, but now I'm on stock and my Verizon plan is a legacy plan that doesn't allow me to have WIFI tethering.
What is the best way to do this on Oreo 8.1?
I assume it's using ElementalX Kernel and changing the code to say true, I don't remember the command line
Should I be doing it this way? If so what recovery should I be using with Oreo 8.1?
Do I flash it differently than 7.1 Nuget? (boot to bootloader, boot to RC1 TWRP image, install TWRP zip)
Thanks ahead of time
I'm with him. Coming from a nexus 6 to a pixel 2XL and need pointed in the direction to a ROM or whatever the solution is now to unlock the hotspot on big red. Still on a grandfathered plan. Thanks in advance.
Add net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to your build prop (I use JRummy's Build.prop editor, just add the line to the bottom of the file). I also believe there is a Magisk module for this.

This means I need to be rooted... I assumed the same.
What are you running to be rooted on Oreo 8.1? My assumption is it's different than Nuget 7.1 since I had issues doing it the same way.

I haven't had to reroot in a while, Last time was when 8.0 was released. I used the guide here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/guide-how-to-systemlessly-root-pixel-xl-t3660324
All subsequent monthly updates and update to 8.1 were applied using flashfire, and root was maintained via everroot (function in flashfire). I honestly don't understand why more people don't use FF to update, it definitely is the easiest. Just make sure to clean themes before updating.

Thank you, I'm following this post and have now a stupid problem.... my encryption password is incorrect, not sure why. Any idea on where to find out what I used (even though I know what I used when setting up the phone from scratch)
I just did a factory reset and started over to make sure I wasn't going crazy.... still no dice. TWRP is not accepting my encryption password.
Update:
I was told in another thread that this is a known issue with TWRP and Oreo 8.1. The only fix was to remove the PIN after boot and work from there. I have done this and your directions worked. Thanks
Hey, fsuagentsmith
Did you enable hotspot on 8.0/8.1?
Let me know, cause I'm ready to jump off the pure Nexus too!

Yes I did.
Sorry I didn't see your post till just now as I don't contribute much on this site. I kind of know what I'm doing but I'm too busy to be a big contributor.
Thanks for asking.
I want to install magisk, but I still want to be able to take ota updates. I also want to keep the stock recovery if possible. Is there a good way to do this, or will I have to flash TWRP?
Edit: it looks like magisk v15 is bricking 7x's. Should I wait a bit before I try to install it?
I Could Be Dead Wrong But..

I Do Believe You Need To Be Rooted To Install Magisk...
And to root you have to Unlock your Bootloader.
Your device will Reject Any and All O.T.A.'s with an Unsecure (A.K.A. Unlocked) Bootloader.
That's why you get that hidious *Warning!* message everytime you reboot.. your device knows it's unsecured.
You can sideload all the upcoming O.T.A.'s when someone makes them available.. I kinda doubt that is going to be on day one though.
The Nice thing about those of you that are rooting is, you can just pay the $18.00 bucks and bring your phone back to stock with that D.C. tool that is being discussed in the Q & A.. I assume it works on all variants ?
Anyway.. good luck to you if you do decide to go ahead and unlock that Bootloader.

Magisk is a rooting method, I know from experience that you don't already have to have a rooted phone. Also magisk v14 added a feature where you could patch the boot image and flash it via adb.
What's this "D.C. tool"? It sound interesting

You Are 100% Correct...
You're conversing with an old "SuperSu" guy here.. I totally forgot mag's is a rooter like Su.
But you still have to Unlock that loader to make it happen.. You are not going to get any O.T.A.'s
I know Magisk can hide root for things like netflix... But not to recieve Vendor Updates.. unless things have changed drasticly.. please correct me if I'm wrong..
But again.. sideloading is always an option.

When It Comes To Huawei.. I'm A Virgin...
Every other phone I've seen, the O.T.A. will notify you that your system has been "Modified" and will not attempt the update.
When you root.. Your Phone Becomes Insecure.. and is vernable to Malware, Virus, Hacks and god knows what else.
O.T.A.'s are Signed Packages.. They Ain't Going To Da Hood To Do Business...
Keep it locked if you want everything on day 1.. Then you can Root to your hearts content.

Note u definitely can't take OTA updates with Magisk installed. What's worse is the normal recovery doesn't have a proper update option so u'll have to use Huawei's Dload method which fails if u have tampered the system. Restoring to the stock ROM with a locked bootloader is also incredibly hard on Huawei/Honor devices.

Here's how to take ota updates with magisk. But what your saying is Huawei doesn't use recovery to update, they use proprietary methods that detect system modifications, right?

Thats not what I meant, Huawei does use the recovery to update like any other phone but their recovery doesn't let the user to sideload their own OTA files. U'll have to use their Dload method which is an absolute pain.
Further, the Magisk page u posted here mentions the system and vendor must not be modded so that means you can't use any app like Titanium Backup to block or uninstall apps since it tampers the system. Thats really annoying since the whole point of rooting is to modify the system. Also if u used TWRP then u will have a hard time trying to find the right recovery file corresponding to the firmware u r on. It is really hard for Honor devices since u'll have to download a large file and, using a tool on XDA, extract the images u need. IMO rooting this phone is worth it right now especially since it is new and will constantly be recieving OTAs in the coming months.

Hi all,
Pixel 3 XL
Android 10(QP1A.190711.020)
ELEMENTALX-P3-2.05
Have a look at attached screenshots, how would one apply the new update without messing it up, i finally have GPay working, and I really want to keep it that way.
Thanks
I cant seem to be able to upload attachments, "url can not prase" ?
Not sure about keeping Google pay, but I followed A/B slot update from here https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/blob/master/docs/tutorials.md
Everything is working fine on QP1A.190711.020.C3
You will need to reflash the kernel.
Only using systemless hosts and edge sense modules in magisk.

Good to hear.! I have a WearOS watch with Google Pay so I haven't had a need to use my phone much.
I have to get rid of ElementalX without losing all my stuff. This kernel has many bugs, my assistent won't start when squeezed anymore.
Is there a way?

How exactly have you determined that it is the kernel, and what does "many bug" mean? There are a lot of us who are using ElementalX on 10 with no issues including assistant squeeze. You can start by installing any other kernel available in the "Google Pixel 3 XL ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Other Development" section (you will need to re-root) and see if it makes any difference. It would also be a good idea if you posted in the dedicated thread for ElementalX. Besides getting user answers, @flar2 will be able to answer any questions specific since it is his kernel.
As for possible issues, how you installed could (dirty, clean, OTA/OTA sideload, factory image in BL) make a very possible difference as well as what version you have installed (specifically if you installed the new c3 image). It sounds like you have a bad Android 10 install and are going to end up needing a full clean install. Good luck.

Hello guys, so after spending a lot of time doing research on which partitions to extract to flash. I found out that the partitions on the link did the trick. I have 2 Sprint V50 same model one is rooted, the other is not, made the backup with Qfil from the non rooted and flashed those onto the rooted, that did the trick. Only use Qfil to flash partitions, do not use TWRP, it'll fail and your data will be erased to get it to work again!
The files are the one's I used, so I upload those to you guys! Hope it helps someone, if you have a doubt, just ask I'll be happy to help.
When I have some time I'll try to make a guide of it. If a new update arrives I'll update this post with the new files!

Nowadays, I can only connect via Wi-Fi calling while the cellular connection no longer works, so I'm guessing that T-Mobile is doing some IMEI-based blocking on their end.

Does anyone know, I still have a STOCK system, without unlocked bootloader (and without root).
I uploaded the boot files extracted from "payload.bin" (init_boot, boot, vendor_boot) to it and patched it in Magisk.
In theory, Magisk reported no bugs during patching.
And here's the key question: is it safe to try to boot (not flash) OP11?
Of course, after unlocking the bootloader.
If after booting without flash it turns out that some functions do not work (screen brightness, changing colors, PIN locks, etc.), just restart OP11 and everything should return to the state before "boot".
Is it possible to lock or relock the bootloader later so that banking applications, contactless payments, etc. work?
regards
f.

I don’t have an answer to your question, but thought I would share that I got my OP11 yesterday. I updated to the latest ÔTA version, A.07. I then unlocked the bootloader and rebooted without issue. I am now looking to root, but not sure exactly how to get the files you mentioned. Can you share how you got those? I do have the payload.bin from the update. Thanks, in advance.

Your model is 2451, i.e. the American version.
If I associate it well, then for your model there is only an incremental OTA, there is no fullOTA.
But I can be wrong.
I just got my American version through Amazon and I'm confused do we patch boot.img or init_boot.img now for root. And as for Amazon they ended up screwing people with the presale I payed 799.99 with a 100 dollar gift card today it lists for 699.99 so they essentially forced people to buy a gift card they didn't need even on checkout they were both itemized separate. I did manage to get them to refund the extra 100 though which was fine but I didn't like being cheated. The funniest part was when Amazon asked me instead of refunding me to my card if I wanted a gift card instead

This is not working, init_boot.img cannot be booted directly. So you can just flash it using "fastboot flash init_boot your_init_boot.img".

This prob isn't answered yet but if we patch init boot how would ota survival work on magisk because it patches boot img in other slot. Is that something the magisk dev might have to implement in the future. I know the dev works for Google but they still let him keep the magisk project

Yes, I rooted with A.06 (mine is CPH2449), and updated via Settings (200MB incremental OTA to A.07), patched into inactive slot, and voila, it kept root. Was using latest Stock Magisk Canary btw.

Friend, you really unlocked the European model, then you root and you have a screen lock/pin/fingerprint?
Automatic screen brightness?
Changing color mode also works?
I inquire, because as a colleague above I try to be careful, I don't have enough money to buy another copy.
In the neighboring thread of two users, he claims that the European version (2449) after the very unlocking of the bootloader allows them to set the PIN/screen lock - so no banking applications will work :/

I am the owner of this thread It's true, I cannot set any lock screen password/pin/fingerprint, etc.
I may need to try relocking and unlocking bl few more times, according to some users that should do the trick.
