Hi, I'm not exactly well seasoned with this rooting stuff but was able to root my Mate SE with Magisk and it has TWRP.
My GPS/Google maps have been terrible and wanted to apply the new OTA update
I'm on build number BND-L34 8.0.0.358(C567)
Security patch August 1, 2019
Kernel Version 4.4.3+
Can someone point me to the guide to do this for the Mate se? Do I need to download the stock ROM for this phone somewhere? Thanks

Nothing special is required. Just update normally with stock recovery installed.

Thanks do you know what the commands in adb would be to flash new recovery? I know when I rooted nougat to oreo recovery2 was actually erecovery or something along those lines.
Do you know how I can downgrade back to nougat and then root that? My GPS isn't working at all.
Thanks

If you're on Oreo, the command is "fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk [recovery]" where [recovery] is the name of the file you're going to flash, whatever it may be. twrp_3.1.1.img as an example. I'm not sure if it's possible to go back to Nougat. I have an L34 that came with Oreo. I think there is a thread that may be able to assist.

You will have to reinstall to complete Stock (see link below). You can not OTA from a customer rom.

If you already did update to Nougat via OTA, flashing that Marshmallow stock image can/will brick your device.
There is a generic RETAIL Nougat Stock image for the April Security Updates flying around somewhere. But generally you should install the stock version you originally had on your device, and then update from there.

I have no idea in what channel a phone will end up with the generic RETAIL images. I just did a dump of every single partition on my phone before I installed custom stuff, so I can always get back to how it was originally, and OTA from there.

I can not say it enough... I really wish people would first learn how to correct their phones before they make the changes.
It really is simple, would you learn how to properly parachute before or after you jump from the plane?

No problem... any time you change a phone I always suggest to really look at the Guides and Discussion section and get to know the phone well before jumping in and hacking it.. Plus Moto did not make this one as simple to flash and recover as some of their others.
Good Luck.

As far as I Moto has not released any signed firmware for the Addison.
Just flash this with RSD lite and you`ll have 7.1.1 with aug patch )

Flashing that on my reteu device resulted in a bootloop with the phone playing the "Hello Moto" sound over and over again.
I could flash LineageOS over it and it worked fine, but it did not give me a working stock OS.

You can try to do next:
1. Wipe everything (incl internal storage with TWRP)
2. Format (not wipe) data with TWRP
3. Go to fastboot and flash stock ROM with RSD lite
P.S. If you still have bootloop - just flash TWRP and SuperSU with it. But if you`ll do everything, what i wrote - You`ll have fully worked device.
Good luck )

Step 3 is what I did originally, including erasing userdata. With that exact stock ROM.
I only wanted to update the bootloader and radio firmware, so I don't overly care it does not boot by itself, as I'm using LaOS.
Just as a note for anyone trying to use that image.
Hi, I just tried to install the September OTA update based on the Magisk OTA installation tips however the installation of the update fails during step 1. At least I am still rooted on the August patch level. How can I update my phone without losing data? I thought about reflashing system and trying the steps again but I don't know where to get the factory images for 9.6.6.0 (August) or 9.6.8.0 (September). This is my first A/B phone by the way. Thanks in advance.

On this page only the ROM for 9.6.4.0 (July) can be downloaded. Later versions are not available anywhere? If not I have to flash July with fastboot, root again and retry the OTA update?

No, the only fastboot image at the moment is this. It should be not a problem downgrading, as long as the same Android version is involved (Oreo 8.1 in this case).
And yes, you can flash that fastboot image and then follow my guide to install Magisk, and then install the OTA update always following my guide, just to test that everything is working as intended.
This did not work. Seems like using flash_all_except_storage.bat was not the right choice, my unlock pattern during booting is not accepted.

So you must use flash_all.bat, but you will lose your data. At the moment the data is in the phone memory, but is encrypted and you probably lost the decryption key when you flashed the other partitions, so not a great lose anyway.
I don't know if there is a way to get your data back.
Yes, I already did this. Had forgotten to disable the pattern.
I searched the internet, but I couldn't find anything. Why doesn't she have anything on this model?
I do not even know how to make him root

This phone don't have mods because this have MTK processor.
If you want root You can do it via magisk.
Just download stock rom (you MUST have same rom version in your phone) from htcdev.com. Unlock bootoader. Extract from stock rom boot.img. Patch it in magisk app and flash it through adb. I didn't tried this before but I've got this phone and I will do this same way i wrote. I did same thing with other htc with mtk processor and it works.
I didn't find any posts regarding this, if there is any then pardon me.
I've updated to the latest pie build and the twrp has also been updated to work on pie and it's almost fully functional. So, I just wanted to ask that can I directly flash magisk for getting root? Anyone tried this? And what are the potential problems than my phone can run into while or after installing magisk.
Thanks
You need to unlock your bootloader in any case if you want to flash magisk.....but if anything goes wrong you can have a really hard time getting it back working with a custom recovery....I don't see a reason why you wouldn't want to flash twrp after unlocking bootloader.

Thanks for you reply. I just wanted to know that did you unlock your bootloader while on Pie itself or was it already unlocked in oreo. Also after that any special steps were required for rooting in pie or the same steps of the rooting guide would suffice?

Asus unlock App only works on Oreo for now. I think we'll get one when the official P version for WW comes out.
No special step just do the same with Pie boot.img :good:

Hi
I have a 2015 Shield (non pro) currently running rooted 5.2.0. I am looking to update it with the latest 8.0.1 dev image to keep root. Is there any precautions or extra steps I need to take over what is in the instructions in the download centre. From what I have read I will need to ADB sideload Magisk to get full root access after installing the dev image.
you'll need to patch the boot.img in magisk canary and then flash it
https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/general/guide-root-nvidia-shield-experience-t3882254
Do I need to unroot or factory reset the rooted 5.2.0 before flashing 8.0.1. Is there any benefit in flashing the dev image rather than the factory image before flashing the patched boot.img.
You should update the firmware OTA. Because you'll flash the OTA you'll need to patch then flash the dev image or this root boot image: https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/development/kernel-overclock-kernel-2-22-ghz-t3943079
But do I need to unroot etc to do an OTA.

yes unroot will happen automatically when you install the OTA. if you know how to use adb and follow my steps it's not a big deal though you can get it back quickly
I have just unfroze system upgrade (com.nvidia.ota) and it offers experience 6.3. I guess I have to incrementally install subsequent OTA's until I get to 8.0.1 then follow your guide to re-root using your guide, I am familiar with using ADB although its been quite a while since I last used it.

yes correct you need to do it incrementally--it's totally worth it Nvidia has done some great upgrades!
Got it up to 8.0.0 installing the OTA's. However the next OTA offered is 8.0.2 rather than 8.0.1 which as far as I know has no root options yet as the 8.0.2 images have not been released by NV.
yes but you don't need dev images to root, you can just patch this boot.img and it should give you root (as long as you install the latest Magisk canary and then upgrade through that)

False double post please ignore.
Just a little confused as to which boot.img I need to patch. Looked at the XDA link you posted but there are quite a few different ones mentioned in that thread. I am currently running stock 8.0.2 OTA on my 2015 16gb.

Just boot into twrp using this https://drive.google.com/file/d/1934405D1S0lv52jZMqS-Zny62RIzGWSi/view
Then flash magisk canary in there, and you are done
Thanks! Flashed the latest canary and now rooted on 8.0.2.
