Hello guys,*
I have an issue with my Fire Tvs and Echo Dots. I have 3 Fire Tv Sticks and 2 Echo Dots. I am able to control the Tv when it is on by the Echo Dot, but I am not able to turn it on and off. The voice control of the remote always works both to turn on and to turn off. The Echo only works if I use the voice control of the remote to turn the tv off and immediately I ask Alexa to turn tv on. Just once.
I tried to factory reset, Dot and Firestic, reset my broadband hub, unlink/link by the Alexa App. Nothing worked.
The technical assistance told me that the Dots could be faulty, but I can t believe that both of them are. Someone else from their Customer Service told me that a Firestick does not turn on and off a not Smart tv.
Any other tip? Would I solve this issue rooting the firesticks?
I am very disappointed cause I bought 2 Echo Dots for that function that I can't use.
Thank you in advance.

I really tried everything possible. Maybe there is no way to turn on tv by Alexa and Firestick, I don't have any other explanation.

My niece has a Fire TV box that worked well until she moved recently. She lost her remote in the move, and went from a hard-wired ethernet to wireless connection (no idea if that matters). I told her that she could use a keyboard to navigate from the home screen (which wouldn't fully load because she doesn't have an internet connection) and set up her wireless connection using the keyboard, and then from that point she could use her smartphone to control the FireTV. The only problem is that she cannot get her external, wired keyboard to respond on the FireTV. Thinking she was just doing something simple incorrectly, I brought her FireTV to my house (I have one as well) and I plugged it in at my place. I have wired internet, and so the home screen did load at that point, but I tried my wired keyboard and I also could not get it to respond. I would just give her my remote and use my phone to control ours, but I can't get to any screen where I could program my remote to work with hers.
Any suggestions? I think it's pretty unlikely that both wired keyboards are bad, and although I don't think she's ever used the USB port I would think it's pretty unlikely that the port is bad too. Is there a way to do a factory reset without actually having a remote or keyboard?
Thanks!
Try an active USB hub between the keyboard and the aTV. Probably the wired keyboards do need more power (or to much for the aTV) in comparision with a wireless keyboard. If the keyboard is illuminated try switching the lights off to minimize the power consumption.

OK, I think I figured out the issue, but still not sure how I'll fix it. I couldn't get the keyboard to work with my Fire TV also, so I started playing around, and it looks like under Settings/Developer Options/USB debugging it was selected as "on". When I selected "off" the keyboard started working without any extra hubs or anything of the sort.
So here's my issue; how the heck do I get to the "USB Debugging" screen to turn this off without a keyboard or remote? I can't seem to work through that in my head unless there's a way to do a factory reset without a keyboard/remote/smartphone, set up my remote to work with hers, disable usb debugging and then give it back to her and then re-set the remote to work with my firetv. Thoughts?
I figured out a workaround, as shown here:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-remotely-control-an-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick-via-adb/
Luckily for me I had a hard-wired ethernet connection and adb debugging was enabled so I was able to figure out the IP address of the Fire TV and adb connect into it using my laptop, and then, very slowly, use the adb commands to scroll down and disable the "USB debugging" so that a keyboard would work. From here I think (hope) she can use a keyboard to set up her wireless network and then from there she can use her smartphone as a remote.

Hi, so I have a fire stick, which I need to relay a single website on constantly for a company, but the thing is, even though firefox is open the stick will go to sleep mode. I sorta need this turned off, I understand there is a way to do this via adb commands, could anyone explain this further? I've tried tasker yet failed to even set up a profile as I couldn't hit the + button with the limited scrolling and functionality that accompanies the remote control with the stick.
any help is appreciated,
thanks!
When I had the first FTV, I had to go to the Display settings and adjust it to compensate for my TV's overscan (yeah, I know, I have a crappy TV in my bedroom) to avoid having a good inch cut out from every edge of the screen.
Now with the FTV2, the option is there in the menus, but it (most ironically) does nothing and simply tells you to fix the thing on your TV (which it can't).
Is there any way to fix this?
My FTV is not rooted, so extra points go to solutions that don't require me to go hacking the thing (which I'll have no problem doing if needed).
Thanks in advance!
Not to derail, but why can't you disable overscan on your TV? There's usually a mode OTHER than the default one that is pixel perfect.

Yeah, I know, "1:1", "Just scan", etc.
Trust me, if the TV had a way to disable overscan I'd know.
It just doesn't.
I have recently moved to the Middle East and have a new TV (Samsung Smart TV) and my first Firestick (4k model bought 6 weeks ago). It has not been taken out of the Amazon app environment so I am only using the apps freely available on the Amazon store. I am using ExpressVPN.
The setup is great for getting me live and catchup TV from home as well as the usual Netflix/YouTube etc.
I discovered the screen saver facility and loaded a pile of photos to my Amazon account so I can see family and friends from home (I am batchelor status here). I love it.
The problem is that the screensaver only works for a certain short period of time before the screen blacks out. If I am listening to a radio app on the Firestick the radio continues after the screen blacks.
I've checked the TV and Firestick settings and cannot find a setting which creates a timeout.
I would like the the screensaver to continue for longer. If I use the Amazon photos app in slideshow mode I can't listen to the radio app at the same time.
Any idea why the screen is blacking out and what settings need changing?

You need to increase sleep timeout, that's the option in secure settings:
settings put secure sleep_timeout 3600000 # 1h
etc.
But it's not easy without root. You need apk which can write secure settings and grant needed permissions to it.
With root just set desired timeout via adb with settings util.

Seems like you can achieve this with just adblink?
There is a program called "Stay Alive!" that you just install, run, and it will keep you stick on. It will complain about "no Google play services" but the default settings are fine and it runs in the background. I can confirm this has kept my FS2 awake for a couple years now. No root.

Just grabbed a 2nd gen Cube on prime day for the bedroom TV.
I had an echo previously but gave it away as the cube has Alexa built in. Trouble being whenever I ask Alexa anything it takes over the entire screen, if I ask for weather instead of just telling me it like the echo did. It says what the temp etc is but also puts it on the TV screen.
If I drop in to the echo downstairs a diaper takes up the entire screen. If I ask a question it displays the question and answer on the entire screen. If I’m watching something or playing a game it still does it.
I know you can turn the alexa off but I don’t want to disable the Alexa completely. I just don’t want to have a dial screen/weather take over the entire TV.
Is there a way to disable that?
thanks
