Hi,
I've been looking at buying this phone because my current one (Honor 5x) is a bit slow for my tastes but I just have a few questions.
1. If I buy the device from a Chinese vendor on AE/Ebay then will I need to use this guide to flash the global ROM to it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-max/how-to/installing-twrp-locked-bootloader-t3406501
I'm quite content to flash it myself since my last experience with proper Chinese phones (Elephone P7000) wasn't exactly a positive one and I would prefer an official Xiaomi ROM over anything custom. I also wouldn't want a rooted or BL unlocked handset and in any case Xiaomi's BL unlock authorisation process sounds painful.
2. Does the official Global ROM have full support for Google apps, DRM protected content, banking apps etc?
3. Does the official Global ROM contain any left over Chinese or is it 100% localised? I recall that my Elephone retained a Chinese bootloader and using the recovery menu when I needed to was extremely difficult. I can read quite a lot of Japanese but I don't know any Chinese and whilst a lot of the characters are the same, many others don't exist in Japanese at all or carry a different meaning.
4. Can I use Google Now over the MIUI?
Thanks in advance.

After reading the link you posted the answer to your first question is also yes, that's the guide you'll need to follow to flash the stock rom and twrp recovery (only if bootloader is locked else if it's unlocked then instead of edl mode, you can boot in fastboot mode)
re Question #1
if you buy a Helium model (64/128gb) the official global rom isn't out yet. It'll probably come out in August from what I can see. http://en.miui.com/download-302.html#446
However the China Dev Rom for MIUI 8 isn't thaat bad. Once you get through 10 mins of pain first installing gapps and installing an english keyboard you won't see that much chinese and most chinese apps can be uninstalled. It'll do you OK until a global rom is out.

I've gone for the 32GB/3GB version because the bigger versions were more than I wanted to spend really. Apparently the seller I've ordered it from are shipping them with the official Global ROM out of the box now so it should hopefully be OK to just pick up and go when it arrives.
Is there a global 64/3 version rom for the miui 7?

Thanks. That is actually a slight positive for me because my current phone (Honor 5x) has that feature and I hate it.
Hey guys,
I bought my phone at Bestgear. When I check the version of my rom I get 8.2.16.0.0. Is this ok? Because on xiaomi.eu I cannot find this version. It's very confusing.
Yes, it's a fake rom.
Just flash an stable or developer china version and then install xiaomi.eu
But I don't understand. What should I do exactly, can you give me a precise procedure? Why would gearbest send me a phone with a fake rom?
To know what to do, try searching the following exact string on google, between quotes:
"All-in-one Guide Compilation On How To Flash Xiaomi.eu Roms On Your Mi5s", you should find a page on xiaomi.eu or en.miui.com.
The process is easy, but if you have absolutely no experience ask for a help.
About the fake ROM, there is still no official global ROM, so resellers put cooked ROMs with additional languages plus gapps (generally required from people outside China) and only god knows what else.
I have no experience with this. To whom should I ask for help?
I have found the guide you mentioned I will try to apply this process. However, could you tell me what does it mean when we say there is no global rom? I will have the phone in Chinese? Or at least in English too?
Thanks a lot for your help and patience.
Xiaomi release its stable and developer ROMS in two more versions: china and global.
The china versions have english and chinese languages.
Also the global versions have eng. and chn. lang. also but also more or less all the languages of the countries where xiaomi officially sells or supports a particular model.
If you go to Mi5S (no plus) http://en.miui.com/download-314.html you'll see that there are only china roms, while for Mi5S Plus http://en.miui.com/download-315.html there are also the global counterparts.
On the guide you'll find that the last step is flash xiaomi.eu ROM.
This is not an official ROM, but is created from the official chinese version. They add more languages, gapps and they do some optimizations beside removing those chinese apps that are not useful for people living outside China.
*I think* that Xiaomi uses their repository to get the translations to build their global versions.
If you follow the guide, is up to you which step to follows.
For example, if you are ok with official china because english is fine for you and you like chinese apps, you can follow just step #1 and #2, and on step #2 you have to choose between stable (less frequently updated about monthly, less new features, less new bugs) and developer (updated weekly with all the new features and bugs), and you should choose for stable.
I you want to install xiaomi.eu you have to follow step #1, #3 and #4. The step #2 is optional, but in this case get the same version (dev/stable) that you are going to use on #4.
Thank you for your help! I think I will try tonight if I have time.
Two more questions if you don't mind :
If I choose Chinese rom, will I be able to install manually and easily the playstore? And with titanium, will I be able to freeze the Chinese apps?
Secondly, if I do the next updates from the phone, will that close by bootloader again?
Thanks!
Mind that selecting English in Chinese official ROM for Mi5s will get your UI to Engish, true. But there will be so much annoying CHinese everywhere that it's pretty much useless to non-Chinese users. If you open App store everything's in Chinese. And that one is rather crucial if you'd like to install Google apps. So anyway. Apply for unlock, put TWRP on your device and flash xiaomi.eu ROM. It seems a complicated process but it's not really. And this specific ROM gets rid of much of Chinese stuff albeit removing strings only (i.e. Wallpaper carousel categories are only represented with images instead of their names as well). Anyway. But until XiaoMi releases a Global ROM for Mi5s we have no hopes of ever getting kernel sources which will allow developers to provide custom ROMs for it like CyanogenMod et al. As the reliable sources close to XiaoMi say, Global ROM for Mi5s will actually be released.
Ok, I will flash the rom from xiomi. Eu but that means I won't be able to update it from the phone, right?
Right

I have fake ROM too but I don't care because it works and all languages are there. No spyware no malicious software no Chinese. I have China's ROM on my Mi note 2 and it's pain in the ass. You will regret if you flash Chinese ROM as many others did. Global ROM for Mi 5s is about to be realest.
P.S
Afterwards I have flashed Xiaomi.eu rom and looks good at first glance. I did backup of my reseller ROM before I flashed Xiaomi.eu rom just in case.
So I have sucessfully unlocked my bootloader, install everything I need for step 3, enabled usb debbug in developers options. But now I can move forward, when I launch the command adb devices my phone is not recognized. Any help?? it's super frustrating.

FYI I just did a full factory reset, still doest not work
Your device still not recognized? If yes, go into device manager, delete the phone there (right click - uninstall). Then unplug it and plug it back in, in many cases it's now recognized.
If it's still not working, follow this very precise guide:

Words of advise, just do not attempt to do anything without UNLOCKING YOUR BOOTLOADER FIRST!!
You simply cannot switch regions before taking that first preliminary step.
That's the way it goes.
Hope this helps,

I asked the same question, because i am on the global euro firmware, and my phone is not detecting my NAVIGO transit card through NFC. I was wondering if the global international was better regarding this matter.
I've moved from EEA to GLOBAL with Xiaomitool 2, it changes my firmware to 11.0.2 GLOBAL without unlocking the bootloader, and then I manually push the full upgrade through the update app. Then I restore my phone for a full restoration.
Working smooth without issues.

When I am unsure what the real differences are because I think HW is the same for both Global and Eu phones, I am pretty sure Laws regarding privacy of users are more strict in EU and there are probably some alteration of bundled software to abide with them.
Those privacy laws are the main reason why neither of those Roms have default MIUI dialer + recording and Messaging, because Xiaomi collects quite a lot of data. Not saying Google does not, but they already had to abide with those Rules and Regulations, so was probably way easier to bundle default android apps, rather than patching their own apps and doing so ending up having 2 versions of the same app.
Besides that, I am pretty curious too what really are the difference between EEA and Global versions with same number. Of course if we compare two different versions of MIUI, we will always find something different.
I am not sure where we can find an official info.
UPDATE:
As I was suspecting looks like main differences are related to ads and how/what datas can be collected or not.
From this post here where users were speaking about it too, differences seems to be summarized to those main differences:
EEA is a Global Rom specially designed for Europe - which basically is just saying they are taking GDPR seriously. You won't get ads and you will need to accept a prompt on every instance where they would collect data (unlike standard Global one).
Global ROM:
This is the official worldwide ROM for all countries except China
The Global ROM has also a Beta Program
The Global ROM receives updates every 1 to 2 months
EEA ROM:
This ROM was specifically designed for EU countries
During the first setup, one can disable all ads inside Mi Apps globally, whereas in the Global ROM, one needs to do that in the Apps themselves
The EEA ROM doesn't have a Beta program
Updates seem to be slower

Use xiaomitool v2 to change from EEA to global stable.
Just search it at xda forum, download it, and follow the instruction o both screen, PC and phone.
I had change the rom without unlocking the bootloader, no problems at all. But do it with your own responsability. I made it following the instructions from the forum of the Xiaomi Mi 9, that someone make it without unlocking bootloader. So I think than on ours phone, it was the same thing.
I delete my gmail account and the rest of account, then I follow the instruction. Clickin on My phone works correctly and i want to mod it, when Xiaomitool v2 ask me what i want to do. Then, click on global, the program itself download global rom 11.0.2 and then install via fastboot. Then i initialised the phone, put the full update global 11.0.6 zip in the phone storage, then go to update app, touch ten times miui 11 logo, and then, tap on the tree dots, manual upgrade, select the update zip. The phone installa the update and you will get your Redmi Note 8 Pro EEA 11.0.3 rom moved to Redmi Note 8 Pro GLOBAL 11.0.6.

Personally after I have debloated the phone using Saki tools (I was not aware of that 'option' to disable ads within the settings) I dont get those MIUI ads everywhere. Of course that does not remove the 'Free' applications ads from the 3rd party application you may install (freemium games and such). Adaway might deal with those, or patch of culprit app with Luckpatcher or such. Or just dont install Adware apps.
I also did not really read what was asked of me when I first started the phone, but as a general rule I answer NO to every thing
For example an other girl friend of mine, who has no computer skills and just started the phone out of the box gets ads everywhere.
An other example the MIUI app installer, which I thought was essential to run the OS, adds ads for every apk installation. You get rid of that, you fall back on regular android stock installer and it has no ads.
Basically all MIUI apps shipped with the phone en EEA has ads. So if you have no use for them, get rid off them.
Once you have removed/disabled all of those, you'll get considerably less ads showing for sure
Hope this helps.

Use debloated miui 11. Good roms are MIUI eu 11.0.11 and MiuiMix 11.0.11 (favorite). It's okay with stock kernel but I use agni kernel. Here's a page with many resources for curtana in one place but be careful before installing anything you haven't seen anyone using.
Curtana Premium
Almost forgot... You can use gcam for slightly more detailed photos than miui camera. There are numerous versions. Check out curtana photography in telegram. Personally I only use gcam for raw images. But for quick shots that you won't be doing pixel peeping on, stock camera is enough.
Hello ftriends, I'm a little confused, are all the ROMs on CurtanaGang valid for the international, European version of the phone? I am very interested in this. I have a new Redmi Note 9 pro bought in Romania. Thanks

That website is not known to a lot of people. Roms made for miatoll will work on your phone. Be careful to NEVER install a rom that's made for curtana only.
The roms listed usually have a support or discussion page linked so look for it. Information in the changelogs can also help you decide. Just make sure that you confirm a rom will work on your phone. The installation guide or the rom thread will usually tell which phone the rom is made for. Look for it and post questions there if possible.
Oh! You said you have a new phone... Don't do anything regarding flashing ROMs before you unlock the bootloader.

Probably because the SIM card is not activated on their server (server error ... etc) and is not activated after restart, reset (three times!). Maybe it will work with another SIM card...I'll try it...

I think that's the problem. You must make sure that the sim card to be activated is able to send an international SMS (Mandatory) and it should (maybe) be the active data sim. When you try to activate it make sure you're using mobile data using that Sim card to be safe. Also, try to activate it without another Sim installed.
My primary Sim card activated properly the first time but Sim 2 has never successfully activated. Every time I reboot it tries to activate Sim 2 but always fails. I just wait for it to fail and clear the error message because it affects nothing.

Use debloated miui 11. Good roms are MIUI eu 11.0.11 and MiuiMix 11.0.11 (favorite).

Hi there, so where can i found those?
I'm on the same train, i'm searching a debloated firmware for my new 9 pro.
From what i gather through forums and posts is that the Havoc-OS is the custom firmware+official with the less issues, unless those you mention are better.
I searched both rom subforums but i can't find them.
The closest i find is this which for some weird reason doesn't have as many posts as one could expect Lol
[ROM]-MiuiMiX_2.2.0_joyeuse-[Android 10 - MIUI 12]
I'm not involved in MiuiMiX team nor its development. I only love and would like to share this fantastic work. Hope you enjoy it. * Your warranty is... still valid? * * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards, * thermonuclear...

Havoc is AOSP meaning it is based on vanilla Android (not miui). It has a large thread on xda so you can browse that to know about the rom. Official means that it's the one recognized by havoc os developers -- not that it's in any way affiliated with xiaomi. The AOSP rom that most people agree is better than most is Evolution X. However, better than other AOSP roms doesn't mean it's better than miui based ROMs. I always use roms based on stock hence the reason i recommend them. They're generally more stable and require much less effort to get going.
Regarding the source of MiuiMix, you can follow the telegram link in the thread you just posted just under "We follow also other devices, you can know more and update in our telegram channel". I won't repost the link because I'm not sure it's even allowed. When you get there search for your device codename. For instance mine is curtana so i just type #curtana in the search box snd i see a list of the roms released for my device.
Miui eu has a dedicated website so look for it.

Thank you for all the info!
Yeah, i think i will go the same root and use MiuiMix which is a stock based rom, that's why i asked where did you get the ones with miui 11 since i can't find them on sourceforge.(there is only a curtana 11.0.9)
I think i made up my mind and since i have joyeuse i will go with the MiuiMix miui 12 pointed in the thread linked above.

Good choice. Im using it right now. It seems to be a nice rom. Better than eu in ram management. Dark theme has some bugs but I don't use it because it has no energy saving for ips display.
Hi, i'm waiting for official Pixel Experince custom rom for the Redmi note 9 pro (joyeuse), I asked them on their twitter account they told me to wait, you can do the same it will convince them to do

I upgraded to MiuiMix 12.0.2 and it's been perfect for almost three weeks now. I don't use dark mode because it's the only bug i know to exist with this rom. And I can't blame the MiuiMix devs because it's a xiaomi fault.

Never used it
Background Info -
I purchased my 16GB x 512GB Mi MIX Fold from a reputable supplier on Alibaba. It was claimed that he was capable of making it have a "Global" ROM (a 5 - 7 day process is how long it took him). All Google services and apps were preloaded, just like my first Xiaomi Global phone I purchased 1.5 years ago. As well as only some of the Xiaomi Global apps. Now that I have the phone, I am running into a fair bit of issues (in this post I am only focusing on one). I did bring these all up to the supplier (of course including updating the ROM issues), all without much help. All he gave me was he said the ROM on my phone is actually the EEA version that was modified, and of I need any updates, go on www.xiaomi.eu. So not much help, because come to find out, they don't support the Mi MIX Fold and that there is no ROMs available. Including the current ROM my phone has right now - V12.0.11.0.RJTCNXM ("Global").
What is nice about my phone is that all the system apps are the Global versions. But what's not so great is the System Apps Updater does not work at all. It shows there are update(s) available for my Global apps, but when I update them, they are indefinitely suck at "Connecting 0%". I also tried Xiaomi's "Get Apps" while switching my Region to "India", it too showed updates, and would not update them no matter what I tried. So, I search online for each individual system app, and update each manually (yes, the whole process is a pain).
So Where I Need Some Help (The Purpose Of This Post...Updating the ROM) -
So, I am in the process of trying to update my phone's ROM, to get the best MIUI has to offer for the Mi MIX Fold. I have searched all over the internet and the only ROMs I can find are "China" versions.
My current ROM version is V12.0.11.0.RJTCNXM ("Global"). I know the most up to date ROM is V12.0.21.0.RJTCNXM (but it's the "China" version). I would like to have the current ROM, but I have a strong feeling that I will loose all functionality of all my Global system apps. The Xiaomi Updater app unfortunately does not work at all. When checking for an update, it says "No updates available". When tapping "Download latest package", it says "Can't download update...Wait a minute or two and try again". When I tap "What's new", it says "You don't have permission to access the update log...". Please see screenshots for all of this. I even tried to update it another traditional Xiaomi way by using Mi PC Suite, which it couldn't even detect my phone when connected. So that doesn't work either.
So my attempts are as follows (at least 20 attempts). I downloaded every Stable Recovery ROM version as listed in the XDA Mi MIX forum titles "MIUI Updates Tracker (Mi MIX Fold)" I also downloaded every ROM version from a couple other sources. I tried to update the ROM (from the newest version to the oldest) using the Xiaomi Updater app through Recovery Mode. Every time it failed saying "Current version is invalid. You can only flash the latest stable ROM", or "Can't verify update...Can't install official ROM". So then I downloaded the ROMs directly from mirror links to Xiaomi's server. I did the same update procedure, they all failed. Does that mean I have to do it via Fastboot?
Last Thoughts -
I included some screenshots showing what the ROM is on my phone (and the outdated Android security update), and what message comes up with each update attempt.
Could you guys point me in the right direction and help me figure out how I can update my Mi MIX Fold to the most current ROM, preferably the EEA version (if possible), since there really is no such thing as a Global version? I would be extremely appreciative if someone can shed some light!
Hi my suggestions is to backup your data firstly from there download the latest fastboot stable of the rom. From there before anything make sure oem unlocked is there inside your phone if not you need to wait 167 hours to fastboot flash the rom. Guides of unlocking is online you can search for that. After that, download the miflash.exe file, that can also be found online and from there flash it with it to the latest Rom . Hope that helps. If you are still unsure , you can always search online of "Flashing with fastboot xiaomi Rom"

Thank you very much for your response!
OK, so it looks like I will have no choice but to get rid of the custom "Global" ROM for the China version. I do wonder though if I am going to lose out on anything as far as the Global system apps (but won't update, unless manually), or all the Google apps & services, or anything else. There of course are many benefits switching to the China ROM.
I'm just a little reluctant because of it being a China ROM being used on a phone in the US. And having features that only work in China and is not optimized for the Global market. As well as features usually found on a Global Xiaomi phone, would be missing or can't work at all. Maybe I am overthinking it all. Another concern is if the China ROM would have English as a language that can be choses. I assume so, but it would be a plus to know 100% before I make the plunge.
Only if I could play around with a Mi MIX Fold with a fresh install of the China ROM. See how different it really is compared to what I currently have. See what it comes with (apps & all) & what is or isn't compatible. My previous, & only Xiaomi phone, was the Global version of the Mi Note 10 Pro. So I have, I guess you can call it, a Xiaomi Global mindset. My Mi MIX Fold is my daily driver, I can't play too much around. Also if I do flash it with China ROM, I can't revert it back to the ROM it has now, since it seems to be custom. Unless I can somehow backup absolute everything, ROM and all.
I know this is a simple question, but what and how is the very best method to back everything up? To not only make sure no data is lost, but also to make the whole process faster when restoring everything.
Do you have any other suggestions or advice? I would appreciate it!
The custom global rom is not official and you will never get update.
I recommend you to mi flash the chines rom, but you will lose everything.
Google will be available the chines ROM.
bom Dia, como consigo essa rom global?
Obrigado

Hey Anas,
Since you tried both Roms, which one would you recommend?
For UAE, does VoLTE work?

Sold my mix Fold and replaced with Samsung fold 3 as the software of Samsung is better, but both are suitable only for office use not a daily driver.
I am using xiaomi 12 pro as a daily driver and planning to move to s22 ultra soon .
