Hi!
I'm currently using flash rom and kernel. As I've always done so, I like to flash TWRP and then SuperSU to enjoy the little tweaks offered by root.
Since the last 8.1 update, I'm facing a few issues that in my opinion are correlated.
First, flashing TWRP works well, but it seems not to be systemless, i.e. when I reboot my device the proper way, TWRP disappears.
Secondly, when I try to flash the latest stable SuperSU zip through my working TWRP (it's a one shot...), the process gives me no error, but then on the first boot, I get stuck on the huge Google logo... The only thing I can do is re-flashing boot.img but obviously the SuperSU app didn't install...
What should I do? Install a beta SuperSU version? Try Magisk (honestly, I don't really like it...)
Thanks for your help and patience!

Do this, first boot twrp, don't flash it. Once booted flash SU 2.82 SR5. Then boot back into the bootloader from twrp and flash twrp. Works for me.

Huge thanks for this!!! I was having the exact same problem (boot hangs at Google logo) and this resolved it!
I noticed that afterwards in the apps drawer I could not find any SuperSU, but doing adb shell and then invoking su worked, so I then just installed the supersu app from the play store to handle prompts (it seems without the app, root is enabled silently and doesn't seem like that great of an idea).
-----------EDIT------------
After installing the app from play store, DO NOT allow it to update the supersu binaries! I ran into bootloop again after that, and had to re-flash SR5 again. Seems like that's the magical version to use!
You're right about having super su update. I had the same problem.
Edit, I just checked and I'm actually using SR3. SuperSu then updated those binaries without a problem.
Hi, thanks for the answers. What do you guys mean by 'booting twrp without flashing it'? What's the fastboot command?

fastboot boot (drag and drop twrp.img file here)

Well for the record, I did the following
Code:
fastboot boot twrp-3.2.1-0-bullhead
Then, I installed SuperSU downloaded here. I went back to fastboot and used
Code:
fastboot flash twrp-3.2.1-0-bullhead
but I still got stuck on the Google logo, meaning that my boot was corrupted or something... I then flashed the original Google boot.img
Code:
fastboot flash boot.img
and re-did the process of flashing SuperSU but I wisely chose to find a SR5 version of the file. I didn't flash TWRP after that and my phone booted normally with supersu.apk installed in it and the root privileges granted ... I don't know if I should try flashing TWRP again since my phone is working fine right now, but thanks anyway for the tip of booting to TWRP and not flashing it directly!
I just changed from Android Nougat to Oreo flashing the latest build from Google (8.1.0, OPM3.171019.013, Jan 2018).
I used Nexus Root Toolkit for that, including Wipe.
All is fine with that, but I want Root access, prefering Magisk.
For that I'd need TWRP, but I seem unable to flash it with NRT (doesnt' update, TWRP 3.0.0.2, version to old?).
Well, it boots into that TWRP but it doesn't stick.
I also tried to flash the Magisk.zip via NRT directly, but didnt't work either.
As it seems I need Root to flash TWRP (using TWRP Manager) but I apparently also need TWRP to flash Root?
Please help me out here, I now fear to make a mistake with "me trying stuff".
(Like using that temporary older TWRP and installing latest Magisk, if that works, hoping it sticks, installing TWRP after that via TWRP Offical App)
Forget NRT (Nexus Root Toolkit) and just manually flash the recovery...
Download the current version here: https://dl.twrp.me/bullhead/twrp-3.2.1-0-bullhead.img.html
Boot the phone to the bootloader by holding Volume down while booting, or using ADB while the phone is running "adb reboot-bootloader"
Flash recovery with Fastboot: "fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.1-0-bullhead.img"
Easy peasy.....

Adding onto the above comment, make sure to use Magisk 14.0 or newer on Android 8.1.

Thank you, that was really quick and also worked quickly.
Magisk root now also functions, I am happy so far.
So, I successfully unlocked the bootloader, then followed the instructions to install TWRP (which worked initially because I was able to access TWRP immediately after flashing). But how to I access it again once I'm back in the OS? When I click reboot to recovery it always reverts back to the stock recovery. I'm still on the stock OS, but I just assumed once TWRP was installed I could boot into it from there. What am I missing?
Solved the problem by getting Magisk installed and using Flashify app to flash the downloaded TWRP img.
@brGabriel just use the fastboot commands as mentioned by manojpawarsj12;
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Don't mess around with Flashify, it's dated and a good way to brick your phone...
hello,
I know it is not the proper place for this thread, but it is urgent.
I tried to uninstall magisk from magisk manager, phone rebooted and now it boot to recovery.
I have a very limited data so i can't download stock rom and flash with odin again.

I installed Magisk again and the phone booted normally.

I have an ATT LG V40 on android 8.1. The phone is already rooted and has magisk installed. I have been unable to get TWRP installed so I can flash a custom rom. It seems that being on android 8.1 is causing issues, but I am not really sure. I followed this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/twrp-lg-v40-judypn.3970111/ and when I send the comand to flash TWRP in the command window is says the flash is finished and my phone boots up, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
You need to use LGUP to get to 9
Noob question but did you installed and tried magisk manager(I bet you already have) and flashify(searchable on Google) (magisk manager grants root to flashify and flashify installs twrp from storage)?
Are you certain that you're booting in to recovery? Many phones have an advanced reboot menu option on the developer settings. If yours doesn't I recommend an app like Simple Reboot.
If you're not certain that it's installing the recovery correctly have you just tried installing TWRP.zip from Magisk?

Which 'command', specifically, are you typing in when you say you are 'when I send the command to flash twrp'? The only command in those directions are to boot twrp, not flash it.
After you boot it, then you need the advanced section so you can recovery ramdisk, which will inject twrp into the current boot partition (and it keeps boot intact).
If you want to use current aosp roms, then follow the 'metadata' sections as you'll need that version of twrp for those roms.
