I just got my hands on a pixel 3xl (Android 9) coming from a Galaxy S5 on Android 5. I know that with Android 5 on my old Galaxy device I could overwrite the default ROM sounds that were located in /system/media
.. unless I'm overlooking something I believe I have found the pixel 3xl's location of the default ROM sounds located in /product/media and I can't seem to mount that location to read/write with my root explorer...
I'm wanting to change the ROMs default sound such as the charging sounds, low battery sounds etc. Is it possible to do this without being able to mount the /product to read/write?! What am I missing?

I already have that version of Google Sounds..
I'm looking to replace the OEM ROM sounds like when a set it on a charger or the battery is low; I want to play l own sound. I could use Tasker to do what I need I guess, but the would then play two sounds...

DUDE!!!!! YOU ARE FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!
That worked perfectly!!
For anyone else flashing this, I noticed that due to my font on my pc, sometimes its hard for my to distinguish upper and lower case letters...and on I few of the NFC sounds I see that I accidentally had CAPS lock on so some of the capitalization is reversed and the first flash resulted in two files names; the old file and the incorrectly capitalized one (my fault!)
I fixed this by uninstalling the module, fixing the capitalization within the zip and reflashing...
I do have two questions tho, if I decide I want different sounds, can I just replace the ones in your zip and reflash?
and where can I throw you a tip?!!

For those who want to delete annoying ringtone or alarm sounds from stock one, here is a simple solution to change it
You need : Root Explorer / Root Browser
1. Go to root.
2. Open system/media/audio
3. (See, there are 4 folders : alarm, notification, ringtone, and ui) Choose folder that you want.
4. If you don't like the sound from that folder, just delete it. If you want to give your own sound, just copy it to the folder that you chose. But i recommend your sound file type is ogg vorbis. You can download Audacity from (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) to helps you convert the sound file
5. (Important) If you choose ui folder and want to change the system sound, don't forget to change your new sound's name like the old one!
5. Done!
After that, if you have problem about ringtone loop, see my thread below

Can it be done without root?
I have a new GT i9100G which is not rooted and as of this time I do not wish to void the warranty. So, my question is, can this be done without rooting my device? If not, will using Odin to root the device (flashing a kernel) set the counter to 1, and if so, how do I reset it without a jig?
PS. I hope I am not posting this in the wrong place and apologize if I am.

Still visible in the menu...
Thanks a lot for the guide bro!
I got another question. I removed all those annoying sounds I never used and never will, the way you showed, but when I open the alarm menu or ringtone menu, they are still visible.
How do I remove them from there too? I wiped cache and Dalvik cache, but they are still there although there are only 3 alarm sounds left, the list of sounds in the alarm menu is still the same...
A really simple thing to do.
I wonder why people fail at times..
Anyways, Good Guide. Will help lots of people.
thankx for it was got bore with that old sound

Never mind... Problem solved... In the beginning, even after deleting the sounds I didn't want, they were still visible in the menus. If I selected them they would be mute of course... Today, somehow they disappeared from the menus as welI don't know if out was due to my constant rom modding or what. It beats me...

Once you are done with removing/adding the ring tone, restart your phone. It will update the new list.

the way to update the ringtone list is just restart your phone, or you could edit the ROM zip file first, before you flash it in your phone.

Thanks for answering my post. Using SU-BB installer, I was able to get root without changing the counter (I hope) so now I can use your method to get rid of the sounds I never use and do not like.
I've added sounds to the notification folder earlier but the notification volume is much lower than what the original volume of those tones. Any way to fix it ?

Use Audacity: It's free, and open source!
If your GT-S5830 has only one speaker (mono), you can, if your audio is stereo, create a mono track which should help somewhat. Audacity>new>open your file> tracks> stereo to mono. You can also use audacity to boost the db of the of the audio signal (take care not to cause clipping). Audacity>effect>amplify.
Hope this helps.

persistent irritating original ringtone!
My friend, please help me out. I have a problem with my rooted Huawei mediapad s7-931u device. i dont know why whenever i use/ install hisuit driver, the ringtone of the device gets back to its original (irritating!) one. off course, the name of the ringtone in my device is the one I have chosen, but that does not ring and the original one is played. I have tried to not use hisuit but still when i install a new app or use Superuser app, the ringtone changes to its original one!!!
you know what's funny! i looked all four audio folders to find that ... sound but it wasnt in any of them to be DELETED or what.
Please help me out! it's really going on my nerves now!
by the way, i forgot to make a ROM back up! oops. actually i tried but i couldnt. please tell me what to do.

After this I wanted to confirm for myself( just a curiosity thing ) and found something very intresting. I removed each file 1 at a time and rebooted, only to find out that the sound was still there. Could my RootExplorer be going wacky ? Or could those files have nothing to do with the lock sound ?

Make sure that your file explorer is setting the /system folder as writable. Even if you have access to root folder of your phone, the /system folder is usually read only. Goes without saying you need root access to your device.

This post intrigued me so I tried it myself... I wanted to change the obnoxious "boop" to the tick from an aosp JB ROM and I found that All 3 of these files must be changed or else you'll still get that dang "boop":
/system/media/audio/ui/Effect_Tick.ogg (Actually, I really don't think this is necessary because I accidentally deleted this file entirely without replacement and have still achieved the same results, but if it makes you feel comfortable...)
PLUS
/system/media/audio/ui/S_HW_Touch.ogg (This is the sound for the "back" and "menu" keys on the bottom of the phone)
AND ALSO
/system/media/audio/ui/TW_Touch.ogg (This is the MAIN file that changes the sound on every touch made on the touchscreen)
Hope this helps!
And oh yeah... DEFINITELY make sure you're using a root-capable file explorer with "/System/" mounted as RW and make sure permissions are set to "rw-r-r" when you're done. And reboot for new sounds to take effect.

I'm sure the keyboard has one too. So there may be a ton of files lol. I always disable keytones and what not as soon as I touch an electronic device. They drive me nuts. It'd be a fun prank to replace the bloop with the camera click tho

I was tinkering around in the sounds and found out that this works really easy.
Unfortunately the effects are not immediately noticible, it requires a reboot to have the system sounds replaced.
Also another big thing is that if you want to keep your phones original sounds just rename the file TW_Touch.ogg.off or .Bak all you need to do is add something to the end that makes the file null by the phone and it can always be changed back to reinstate the stock sound

HAVE TO BE ROOTED. IF the power on sound is annoying to you as to me I changed it off...I will provide a screenshot I used root explorer to rename the file and put a "y" at the end of the file....and the touch sound is little annoying hearing raindrops everywhere so i did the same method. .....
TO change these as something you wish copy a sound over change permissions and rename to what it once was...ONCE YOUR DONE REBOOT;;;
SCREENSHOT shows where files are located for your convenience. ...hope this helps

I get you man! It almost drove crazy! and yes the sounds in question are located in /system/media/audio/ui/
I change 2 files : S_HW_Touch.ogg and TW_Touch.ogg with 2 files I picked from AOSP 4.2, set the permissions correctly and reboot ... voila , no more water-drops .
For the dialer you need to rename/remove/or replace Dialer_new.ogg in the same directory.

I would love to know how to do it as well. The key tones on the dialer are very important to have certain sound, for some visually impaired people using this phone it really helps to listen to the key sound when pressing numbers to confirm right number has been pressed. Anybody at Samsung reads this forum? Can you please put back regular telephone dial sounds? What was wrong with the sound? This device is a telephone, right? No one? Come guys (and girls?)...I changed all 3 .ogg files as well, but unfortunately the Dialer sound is still the terrible water sound...although I can't find a SINGLE file on my phone anymore which IS that sound...so where does the phone find that sound/file????? Aaaaaaaaaaaarghhhhh!!!
This is spooky...or is it an encrypted file just to tease us?
Thanks,

btw, the dialer sound is not annoying as it is a bit different now that the other sounds are changed to better ones.
you have to change the mount from R/O to R/W in the root explorer. & make a backup of the old files just in case. then copy paste the new files overwriting the old ones. change back the permission from R/W to R/O, reboot & enjoy.

Being rooted, w/ Note 2 and using root explorer, I changed to R/W, replaced Dialer_New.ogg, S_HW_Touch.ogg, and TW_Touch.ogg, changed permissions on them taking Write off, back to R/O mode, rebooted, and still dialer has drop sounds... Not getting this, am I missing something?

Did you try renaming the new sound file to Dialer_New.ogg?

Now after unzipping the apk the ogg file is there, it should be the one as it sounds like the dialer. I tried all the stupid tricks I know (replacing it with another file and zipping back the whole thing, renaming it to apk since apk files are just fancy zips => didn't work. Tried embedding it in a flashable vrtheme zip file since those decompile, mod and recompile the apk => didn't work.) I don't know how to properly decompile an apk and since everyone is using a different ROM it'll be difficult to post requests.
I've been able to change the touch sounds from water drop to click which was pretty straight forward however the keypad dialler 'spelling"
was located in a different place than otherwise noted on the forum.
The dialler touch sounds were located in a different place than the touch wiz sounds. and it was one file not broken down into 1 2 3 ect.
This is for 4.1.2 i9100.
So I put it into the to hard to do basket and just left it. Sure you can use a app dialler but I like stock.
Wouldn't you think that someone as big as Samsung would allow you to make a simple sound change just by going to settings - sound.
Good luck.

I've been looking all over for this sound file (it's not Dialer_New.ogg in System/Media/Audio/UI)
I would be happy to replace the dialer sound with just a single touch tone sound I already have but can't locate the file.
(EDIT) - nevermind - now I understand the post above indicates that the file is located inside SecContacts.apk
SecContacts.apk\res\raw\touch.ogg
Does anyone know where to find the above file? I searched in Root Explorer from the top level (Root) but didn't find it.
Thanks
I was getting tired of hearing the camera shutter sound when taking photos, so I dug around the file system and found two audio files that are the shutter sound. I renamed these, rebooted, and everything is working great. Let me know if this does or doesn't work for you!
Before you get started, you need to be rooted for this method.
Step 1:
Use a root-capable file browser of your choice (I prefer SolidExplorer) and navigate to /system/media/audio/ui
Step 2:
Locate cam_snap_0.ogg and camera.click.ogg and rename the file extensions to .OLD, as seen below.
Step 3:
Reboot, then test
Alternatively, (non-root) you can set your phone to vibrate or silent mode and it wont make the shutter sound.

Agree, why not just set your phone to silent mode.

Not all of us keep our phone on silent all the time, and most of us don't want to think about turning the volume down every time we take a picture. If we never care to have the shutter sound, why not just disable it completely?
what does the .OLD do to the file? just out of curiosity.

It onyl changes the name. It does not affect the contents of the file in anyway. It will fail a HASH check though so revert it back in order to do an update to another OS if you are stock.

It allows you to keep the original so you can revert back if anything happens, or you no longer want the mod.

thnx!
Worked like a charm!
You can also use G4 tweaksbox to do the same thing plus a whole lot more.

This was before Xposed came out for the G4, not everyone wants to use Xposed as it hurts battery life, and some people prefer the simple approach.

I understand. But xposed has such a negligible impact on battery as I doesn't matter. And the tweaksbox is as simple as it gets; one button disables the sound and can turn it back on.

You still have your G4 or are you just sticking around to be helpful?

Just hanging around, I have a 6P now.
thanks for this! for some reason Tasker doesn't recognize when the Camera is started so the Silent method is weak... and while G4 TweaksBox would be nice, I'm also having issues getting the unlocker to work. Emailed dev and am waiting for a response...
EDIT: looks like renaming doesn't work for me... interesting...
EDIT2: created silent versions of the two files and now... we have silence!
