Solved: I've set the lockscreen security up on none (slide), locked the phone then unlocked it, and suddenly I got a strange notification that I didn't have the time to read, and finally the fingerprint scanner came back. Wtf
Hi everyone,
This morning my figerprint scanner stopped functionning. I don't know why, they said that the "fingerprint scanner support is not available" or something like that.
I rebooted my phone, and then it completely disappeared. I can't even find it in the settings, it's like there never was any fingerprint scanner on my phone.
What do you think?
Thanks
EDIT: also I don't know if there is any link but it seems like my phone case (the white at the back) has lose its colors at some points, like it's starting to turn grey, also around the fingerprint scanner
I've created an app that wakes ambient display when you take the phone out of your pocket or if you have the phone face down and turn it over. The app is in addition to Google's ambient display and does not change your lock screen in anyway.
I added a few other paid features for lift to unlock, wave to unlock, pulsing at an interval, and battery percentage display on the ambient display.
I have a thread going on the Pixel XL forums and a number of people have been testing it out. I think it's stable enough to start spreading the word.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions or run into any problems. Thank you!
Check it out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.compass.ambiturner
I'm interested, but it appears your link is dead.
Edit: found it in play store. Went ahead and got pro for lift to wake.

Thank you! I fixed the link...cut and paste truncated the link.
I'm testing it since four days and can absolutely recommend it.
No battery drain here at all. Proper functionality and even more options with every new version.
Keep up the great work.
Edit: do you have PayPal? I'm gonna hook you up with a beer.

Haha, thank you. The app support is more than enough thanks!
Just bought the pro version. Coming from a note 7 and missing that ambient display, this great app will do.
Looks great.
Thank you very much sir
Trying it on a Nexus 6p. So far i'm loving it.
Bought pro, thanks!
So I've done some limited testing with the app white listed from doze and so far it improves the responsiveness significantly. I don't know the battery impacts yet, but if it's not noticeable I'll add code to prompt users to white list it.
Other upcoming changes:
Advanced settings to adjust wait times for how long the phone has to be in your pocket or laying flat before a wake can occur.
A pulse option that initially pulses faster when a notification comes in, and progressively shows down until the timeout.
Possibly change in lock screen battery indicator appearance.
Filter on laying flat thresholds. I suspect the accelerometer incorrectly reports the phone tilted while it is laying flat on occasion.
Just bought the Pro version, thanks for the nice app.
Unfortunately the ambient display doesn't light up on my Pixel if the phone is unlocked, e.g. by SmartLock. Typically, I have the phone lying next to me on the desk at work or at home und the phone is unlocked by location based SmartLock. This is where I would like to see incoming notifications without touching the phone. Do you think this is possible to implement?

I'll look into that. I've got an idea that may work.

Doesn't work for me.
More important (maybe only for me): the screen doesn't light up without interaction if the phone is unlocked by smartlock. That's the same behavior as with the ROM build in ambient display feature. It only lights up the screen when the phone is locked.
Thanks a lot for looking into that. This would overcome the disappointing original Google ambient display implementation!
If i can help somehow (testing,...) please let me know.

Do you still have ambient display enabled in settings? Mine is working with the location smart lock turned on and ambient display enabled.

Tested again..
Ambi-turner enabled.
In display settings
Ambient display : on
Display timeout : 15sec
Security settings:
Pin lock screen after 10min
On/off button locks immediately
(I'm not on an English version, hope the translations are understandable)
The phone is in an area where is unlocked by location based smartlock.
Test 1: wait for 15sec until the screen switches off, wait another minute, send me an WhatsApp from 2nd phone: i hear the notification sound, screen doesn't turn on. If i turn on the display using the on/off button i am on the home screen.
Test 2: switch off the screen by on\off button, (i can hear the lockscreen notification) and send me a WhatsApp from another phone. I hear the notification sound, screen turns on and shows the message. If i turn on the phone by on/off button I'm on the lock screen.
Pixel, version NDE63H
Just bought pro - nice job!
I' ve just tested it on my Nexus 5 with PureNexus 6.0.1 rom. PN has ambient display function in settings but it doesn't work because Nexus 5 doesn't have pick up sensors or pocket sensors. Therefore I've been looking for some solution how to wake it, for example cmactions-wave to wake or similar. For the previous period I've been using GravityBox but it's battery hungry.
I see now that ambi-turner works also, so testing it ATM...
nice work...

Thank you. I'm posting an update soon. I'm testing a new mechanism that is waking the screen up much more reliably than the current version.
I just got my Pixel yesterday and started having this issue, so I thought I'd check in with the fine folks at XDA.
I had Ambient display set to "always on" and "double-tap to check phone" set to on. After a while of being in my pocket, the screen will be black when I pull it out. Double-tap to wake does not work and it never comes on. The only way I can wake the phone after that is the fingerprint reader or power button (which I never use on my Android phones). It seems like Ambient display is going to sleep due to the proximity sensor and then just not waking up.
I changed it to lift to wake and the problem is mostly gone, but I would rather have ambient display on all the time. This is brand new out of the box. It's not rooted or anything. I haven't even unlocked the bootloader.
My OnePlus 6t was doing something similar (to a lesser degree) and it drove me crazy. This is something I need to work consistently. I expect to take my phone out of my pocket, glance at the AOD, and then tap twice to wake it and interact with the lockscreen. That's how I use all of my phones.
I just wanted to see if anyone else is having the issue. I haven't wiped it because, really, it's been doing this since I took it out of the box (new). And I have seen some other scattered reports online. Rebooting also did not resolve it.
This has happened to me a couple of times. Quite annoying.
Yeah, I have this problem too. Another bug...
Yep. Happens to me fairly frequently
It started happening to me recently too.
Thanks for the confirmation, guys. Glad I'm not crazy. This may actually be a deal-breaker for me, though. I'm pretty anal about the consistency of tap-to-wake on my devices.
Hi,
As the title says, I'm experiencing some problems related to the fingerprint sensor, specially when I try to wake the device as I have to put my finger in the sensor twice because the phone doesn't recognize my fingerprint at the first try, it just vibrates, but the second time I put my finger it wakes up the phone with no problem. It feels like the sensor puts itself in deep sleep mode as it happens like 15 seconds after I turn off the screen.
The fingerprint sensor works fine when the screen is on, as I can unlock protected apps at the first try. But some apps that include their own fingerprint authorization like Paypal or my bank account app shows me an "error" as soon as they ask me for the fingerprint, like the fingerprint sensor is already in use (not sure how to explain it), but they work as soon as I put my finger on it.
Pressing the sensor for a little longer wakes the device at the first try, but I'm pretty sure that's not the normal behaviour.
Disabling the pocket mode doesn't help either.
As the title says, this only happens on every MIUI rom Iv'e tried, like Xiaomi.eu, Mi-global or Revolution OS, always made a clean flash. I've tried Havoc-OS and Pixelexperience and the fingerprint worked flawlessly, not a single problem with those roms and that's what makes me think that it's a software related problem. In fact, I'm currently using Havoc 3.0 and the fingerprint sensor is working great.
I've also tried to flash persist.img from the chinese official rom without success. And needless to say that I've cleaned the fingerprint sensor several times.
I know it's not a big deal of a problem, but it's driving me crazy. So any help would be appreciated as I really want to use MIUI instead of any other custom rom.
TL;DR: I have to use the fingerprint sensor twice to wake my device and feels like the fingerprint sensor puts itself on deep sleep mode or that it's already in use somehow. But it only happens on MIUI roms.
Hi
I just got a new S20+ however I noticed that the fingerprint sensor doesn't work when it goes on Always on display. Also, if I enable the icon to show when I tap, it doesn't show. Is this a software problem? how can I fix this?
Please help someone out! Thanks!

Sorry for the late answer.
I found out in the end it was the protective film that I had. I got a new one applied from a friend, the first day it worked just fine but now it's not working anymore on AOD.
How is this even possible? the touches are not detected in the lower part, the proximity sensor cannot be considering it would immediately turn off if I had to call if that was the case, what am I missing here?
I, too am facing this issue.
When the screen is off, I touched the lower half of the screen,
a) the AOD clock doesn't show up,
b) I am unable to use fingerprint scanner on AOD screen (it works fine on the unlock screen)
I have done soft reboot, factory reset, still no avail.
If someone knows how to fix this, PLEASE help.
