Just this evening I noticed when I put my phone under a lamp with a bulb, the phone thinks the lamp is my face and doesn't turn off the screen. Are you guys experiencing the same thing?

I experienced the same thing though it happened randomly. I tried to put my friends sgn2 side by side with mine and his phone doesnt have this problem.
Is this hardware problem? How to fix it?

I don't know. Seems to happen on my note 2 randomly.
Today it happened to me in dim litted situation. So it seems not limited only on bright situation.
Yes, I had this problem some days back! Damn, I was going to wipe my device for this, then thought about un'smart' stay and just rebooted the device, got fixed!
Btw- The smart alert feature is also not responding for me sometimes! When I pick the device up from the table beside my bed it vibrates sometimes, but most times it don't. Don't know what's going on!
Sent from my GT-N7100
These smart features use the front camera as the sensor to determine the condition. Should there be any defect on the hardware, itu must be the front camera. But I find my front camera to work well on taking photos. So I wonder what caused this? software? I don't think so since I was using the same version firmware with my friend and only mine got that problem.
I have no idea what is the cause of the problem.
If anyone had these problem, please describe it here so we can get an idea what might caused these.
The software does what it can. It confuses our eyes with other things. it has happened to me. I think it's more meant for you to look at your phone and not turn off rather than being able to 100% distinguish your face in all situations and know to turn off the screen. Most of the time it works though. I'm happy! But usually to not waste battery I turn off the screen when I put it down.
I got my nexus 7 today, but around 30% brightness the screen will start to flicker like a candle and it's pretty unbearable. I was wondering if this was a softwarw problem that could be fixed or whether I should just exchange it for another one.

Same problem if the environment light is not stable, the light sensor is so sensitive that will make the problem happen. The Nexus 7 1st has this problem too. The AUSU' offical explanation said that the problem is normal situation. Unbelievable!!!
hmm.. I dont see to have this issue? Are you able to provide steps to replicate it?

No I'm not, it happened today while I was visiting a friend. I just dropped my brightness down to about 30% and this horrible flickering just started, I got home today and I can't seem to replicate the problem.
Taking it back on Saturday anyways because I was watching a movie and oh god, I got some BAD light bleed.

I haven't seen a lot of this reported at all really. Before you return, if you could, take a short video of the issue happening. I'd be curious to see what it looks like. It does sound like a bad panel, though; so definitely let us know how the new one works out.
I just got my nexus today and have experienced this flicker issue within 10 minutes of use , I'm happy to say I immediately came to my trusty xda app for answers and as usual found one !! Seeing that I'm not the only one having this issue I'm thinking its a hardware problem.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I read about this here or some place else and if I remember they said not to lower brightness below 40 for those with the issue.

My actual camera has been lost for like uh, 4 months lol.

This is exactly what happened to me, also I can reproduce it while having my brightness in the 20-50% range while having a subpar wifi signal.
Hey Guys, the fingerprint sensor on my Nexus 5x (LG H791) stopped working out of the blue the other day. I bought the phone on eBay about 2 months ago, and the seller told me it had an international warranty. However, this warranty is not supported by LG Canada (so much for being international). FUrthermore, the seller says his stuff shipped from the US, but it actually shipped from Malaysia. Needless to say, I was pretty pissed off.
Anyways, the 5X has been great until the other day. I pulled the phone out of my pocket and tried to unlock it with my fingerprint as I always do. It didn't unlock, didn't vibrate, and didn't do anything. I pressed the power button and tried again. At this point I noticed the dreaded red words across hte bottom that said "Fingerprint Hardware Not Available". After a quick google I see that people have resolved this problem by rebooting the phone - which did I did, but the scanner did not come back. I then cleared the cache, and that did not solve the problem.
I then noticed, that night, that my phone was fully charged whne I went to sleep and when I woke up it was at 20%. Normally, I'll lose 3-5% overnight. I checked what was using my battery and "Phone Idle" had kept my phone awake for 14h!
SO - I've tried removing a bunch of apps, booting in safe mode, playing with the security settings, display timeout, and a bunch of crap - nothing has worked. I have NOT formatted/recovered the phone yet (I'm out at a mining camp and this is the only way I keep in touch with my girl. Also I forgot my USB-C to USB-A cable.)
What do you guys think - did the fingerprint scanner just crap out? I would really like to get it working again, cause I love(d) this phone. I upgraded from a Nexus 4 and I was a big fan of the nexus, until this crappity crap happened.
Anyways, thanks for your help in advance with figuring out these two issues.
B
EDIT - the original title for this post was "[ISSUES] Fingerprint Hardware Not Available - and now Nexus Imprint is missing..." I have since changed the title to reflect both the finger print and the camera trouble shooting, results, and further questions.
Bump - can anyone help???
Guess there isn't anyone here that's knowledgeable enough to help me with this issue..
Well, I tried removing a bunch of apps, to see if something was causing it - it was not. Then my camera stopped working.. Sometimes when I'd open it up my camera would work, and sometimes it would just crash. I've since performed a factory reset on the phone and there is still no option for Nexus imprint. Whenever I try to open the camera the screen goes black, shows the camera icon and then the Camera app just crashes.
I've got a replacement fingerprint sensor which I'm going to install this weekend. I'll keep you guys in the loop, because apparently this is something that no one here can help with.
Got the fingerprint sensor replaced on my phone. When pulling out the old one there was no visible damage. The connection was solid. I installed a new sensor (which I purchased for $16 shipped to my door I'm Canada from esourceparts). After turning the phone on, in my security settings, "Nexus Imprint" appeared. Set up the new fingerprints, and it works flawlessly.
Looks like it was hardware not software.
The camera still doesn't work, battery life has increased remarkably.
Happy again.

Can't agree with you more (I also upgraded from Nexus 4, and a nexus fan).
I have the exact same issue right now.
It happened to me right after the Nougat upgrade, so I thought it had to do with it, so I tried everything, including downgrade back to Marshmallow, but nothing works.
It's exactly like you wrote, suddenly the fingerprint stopped working, showed this red "hardware" message, then it disappeared completely from the settings, and also the phone started to drain battery twice faster. It's probably has to do with the fingerprint sensor, maybe it's trying to detect it all the time or something, draining the battery.
I'm really frustrated, we're going on a long vacation in 2 weeks and I really need the phone to work well... If I'll order the sensor from ebay right now, it won't get here on time
I think this was my last nexus... (had nexus S, nexus 4, and nexus 5X)
update:
just received OTA update (build NRD90R) which seems to fixed the fingerprint sensor, it works again. hope it will stay this way, don't wanna jinx it.
My fingerprint sensor also seems to have bitten the dust. It sporadically ceased functioning whenever I got it slightly wet, either from sweat when running or if exposed to a little rain. It would always come back after a few hours, however this time it seems to have completely quit. I have done a factory reset and it is still missing. I'm fairly certain I have an issue with the hardware. My phone is under LG's warranty since I bought it from Amazon, so getting the sensor repaired will mean weeks without my phone. It sounds like people are having good luck with replacing the fingerprint sensor themselves. Is this difficult to do? I'd much rather take this route if I can.
I got the "fingerprint hardware not available" message last night out of the blue. Tried a few things to no avail.... Flashed factory image and it works good as new again.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA-Developers mobile app
I went ahead and bought the parts to replace my fingerprint scanner hardware myself. Not 2 hours after I place the order, my fingerprint scanner just randomly starts working again...after 3 weeks. Bizarre. Regardless, I'm planning on holding onto the backup hardware just in case.

No I have not.
But that's a good idea. I did a factory reset on the phone and that didn't solve it. After a restart I can open both the rear and front facing cameras without a problem. But after about 3 minutes of the phone being on, some bug happens and I cannot open the camera. I get a black screen and either I can kill the app and continue using the phone, or the phone just restarts. When I get the black screen I cannot switch to the front camera either - the phone just craps out.
I'll try loading the factory images and see if that helps.
So I fixed the problem by taking apart the phone and installing a new fingerprint sensor.
Google Play support, Google Support, and LG Support would not extend service to this phone because it was an international version. Unfortunately, Google support couldnèt do anything other than to tell me to try a hard reset (which I did).
I ordered a new fingerprint sensor from epartsource (Canadian supplier) which cost me $16cad shipped to my door. Taking apart the 5x by following the instructions on ifixit was very painless. It was incredibly easy to replace the sensor as well. Before putting the phone back together we booted the phone up, and went to the security settings - low and behold, nexus imprint was an option again.
The old fingerprint sensor did not appear to have any damage, the clip was firmly in place before we removed it, and the unit looked like it was in good condition.
This has also solved my battery life woes; I can get about 4 days on airplane mode now.
Now, all I need to do is fix the camera (I lost use of the camera about 4 days after the fingerprint sensor crapped out.) I have since ordered a replacement camera from Aliexpress - I'll post up a new thread for that when it comes.
I'm not sure why the fingerprint sensor AND the camera would both stop working at or around the same time. I think that something may have impacted the rear of the phone causing damage to both of them. Very poor if the fingerprint sensor is THAT fragile.
I'm happy to have my phone working near 100% again. I am a very loyal nexus customer, however, that is changing quickly with the lack of service provided by both Google and LG. Google, I hope you're listening. You need to do more to keep your customers.

The more I thought about it, the more I think it has to do with water. If your finger is slightly wet, DO NOT use your fingerprint sensor. I'm fairly certain it was this that killed mine. Or a slight impact to the back of the phone.
Regardless, I treat my stuff pretty well and I take good care of it. I was at work, however, and I need to spray down things so my hands are constantly wet. I had been using my fingerprint sensor with damp/wet fingers in the few days before it crapped out.

I like to use my phone with an armband while running and my armband has a "clever" design with an open spot to give you access to the sensor. Unfortunately this means it is in direct contact with my skin and sweat while I run. I got in the habit of sticking a small cloth between the sensor and my skin to keep it dry, but apparently even tiny amounts of moisture on your finger when it's raining seems to be enough to damage it. Anyone know if this is just an issue with the 5X sensor or do other phones also have this problem?

It makes sense... The sensor is probably some sort of heat detector that can discern slight differences in heat on the surface of the sensor. A ridge of your fingerprint would conduct more heat to the sensor than heat that's radiated to the sensor from a fingerprint valley. It probably makes a quick map of the thermal Imprint and matches this to your saved profiles.
Or I'm out to lunch. Lol.
However, I'm pretty sure water killed mine, and the fingerprint sensors are very fragile. I've stopped using mine all together until I have clean hands. This means no using it at work.
Bought a replacement camera module from Aliexpress and finally got around to installing it. With the cover, and the frame off, new camera module installed, I was able to open the camera, use both the front and the back cameras.
However, when I closed it all up and went to use the camera, I get the same errors. Black screen, cannot connect to camera, and then it crashes/restarts the phone.
Definitely not hardware!

I downgraded from N-Preview 5 (? v.7.1.1) to android 7. Camera would only work for a few moments after immediately rebooting the phone.
Sideloaded 6.0.1 using fastboot and unlocked bootloader - the first time I ran the new install, the camera app crashed instantly. Rebooted, and now it's been working fine.................. Let's see how long it lasts! Will update tomorrow.
So. I followed the instructions on Google's page (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images) and I sideloaded build MMB29V. And the camera NOW WORKS! I left the phone powered on over night and the camera will start anytime I need it to. I installed all of the available OTA updates, bringing me up to NBD90W, and my camera is STILL launching flawlessly!
In other words - a fresh factory install fixed the camera issues!+
Edit: Just sideloaded in the latest version of 7.0.0 (NBD90W, Oct 2016) and the camera is stable. The stock android camera is version 4.1.006.125161292. I will keep you updated as it progresses. The actual camera module in my phone is the one that I ordered from Aliexpress ( https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Ori...era-Module-Replacement-Parts/32657390368.html) The black housing on the camera module was a bit different than the OEM one I pulled out. I didn't check any serial numbers to verify; so I don't know if the one from Ali is actually OEM.

That's encouraging! Mine died overnight, after being intermittent yesterday. Went onto eBay and ordered a replacement from Asia for about CAD$9 delivered, should arrive around Christmas.
esourceparts (I'm also in Canada) only had the black sensors -- mine is white, and I like white.

I have the same camera problem, can you tell what exactly you did to fix it?

I don't know if this has been asked before.
But is it possible to just let the Iris Scanner scans our eyes right when the screen turns on? Like, I have the cover on, then I flip the cover open, screen turns on, and Iris Scanner will do its job. RATHER than having to swipe the screen once.
And is it possible to accept phone call using Iris Scanner?

Iris scanner and Laser eye surgery
Hi Everybody,
I am new to posting but not new to following many samsung note 3,4,5 forums.
I just bought a Note 7 N930FD in Vietnam, Gold color. I would maybe have chosen another color but i didn’t have the choice. The manager at Phone Shop told me Samsung was having issues with the Black color getting to hot.
Anyway to get to my issue. It’s the iris scanner. It doesn’t give a complete successful scan of my eyes. The most it reached was 90%. Although mostly it doesn’t reach that % often mostly it fails within a minute or so.
I am wondering if anyone else is having issues getting their eyes scanned. I went back to the shop and the manager scanned his eyes, right away it was a success. He did it a second time with the same result.
So i conclude it not a issue with the phone or software.
The only 2 factors that maybe causing failed scans for me, are i had laser eye surgery many years ago. I have no idea if that is effecting it or not. Maybe if there is someone reading this who also had laser eye surgery and they used the iris scanner with success, would you please let me know. The other possibility is my eyelids don’t open enough to have the scanner complete the scan.
Beside this issue the phone is working really well. No lag, smooth scrolling. The speaker isn’t as loud as would like in comparison to my Note 5. But my note 5 was rooted with Viper/ AryaMod_Premium_Sound_Control installed, which was excellent. I don’t intend to root the Note 7 until i use the phone for 3 or 4 months, then i’ll see what is available with custom roms.
Also a side note, i didn’t have issue with using a sim card and memory card in the draw. It ejects ok when i apply slight pressure with the pin tool. The other thing was that the spring in the spen works fine, i did read someone said that theirs got stuck in the phone. I find after i eject the pen, i push back in the spring loaded top end. Then when i put it back into place i don’t need to push the spring loaded top. Just slide it into place easily till it clicks….

- Note 7 black color gets too hot? Just an excuse. Never heard such thing. I'm using the black one myself. Wish I got the silver one but because pre-order stock ran out after 6 hours of the first day.
- Have you tried with other device to see if it get stuck on 90% also? I've never heard of that as well. Maybe eye surgery caused that. But try it on other device first to confirm.

I am living in a small city in Vietnam. Only one shop now have Note 7 and they had 2 gold models. All in sealed box they won't open, only if you buy it. Usually they have display models. There is no display model to try what you suggest. Maybe in the next week or so i'll give it a go when they are on display. although the scanner worked fine for the shop manager, so i don't think its my phone or software. Yes i can't say if the guy is spinning a story about the black color, but it might be the case for the ones coming out of the Vietnam samsung factory that are effected!
Finally scan worked
Well I reset the phone, after was able to scan my eyes after a few attempts. End of Story for now!
What's up guys? Has anyone else noticed that the fingure print Sensor barley works. For me, it usually takes all 4 attemps and I have to end up putting my code in. Once upgraded to Pie I factory reset and started from scratch. Seemed to be happening for a while now, maybe since about 4 months ago? IDK, I know of no fixes. Anyone else experience the same thing?

I am having a similar issue.
Not quite as bad as 9 out of 10 rejections, but its definitely about 3 or 4 tries before it works. Used to be flawless.
The sensor is not dirty either, and fingerprints are not that old. Going to try redoing them now though see if that helps.
Mine is much slower than when I first got the phone, it is sad really that updates have ruined the sensor. This is the first year that I am not pre-ordering a new google phone. I am intrigued by the Pixel 3 (not XL), it would be kinda nice to go back to a smaller sized phone.
Cleaning with alcohol and deleting/re-adding my prints seemed to fix the issue. Will report more later down the road.

I was researching a fix for this, today.
The number one suggestion was cleaning the sensor.
For me it is sporadic failure of one or two tries and then I purposefully position my finger as perfectly at possible and it will usually recognize by the third try.
Although, today, after reading search results, I picked the screen with the power button and was able to unlock with fingerprint ten times while trying to place my finger awkwardly or not perfect.
Go figure...
I still haven't gotten around to breaking out the alcohol.
This problem started for me with the Pie upgrade. Others have posted about it also. Re-registering a print or cleaning does not help and is not the issue even though often the message given for not working is a dirty sensor. I have just gotten used to it. Works more than 1/2 the time and the others I just go old fashioned and enter my code.
I just went into ABOUT PHONE and sent feedback for unreliable fingerprint sensor, since pie update and requested an update to fix.
The alcohol seemed to help a bit. Most of the time my fingure is registered. Still not nearly as good as it was when I got the phone.
