So because I'm a broke boy I am still using and AT&T HTC One M8 as my daily driver. I have found AICP to be my personal preference when it comes to software, it is based off Lineage with just a few tweaks. Nothing major. Recently I played around with a few other roms to see if there was anything worth switching, but to no avail, although one of the roms came with a kernel to enable quick charging, and I use Ampere to measure and sure enough it boosted my charging speed by quite a bit. My battery is terrible bc the phone is old so I need all the help I can get when It comes to charging.
My question is, is there a way to get a kernel for Lineage for the HTC One M8 to enable quick charge? I know the modification that needs to happen, it is something involving
Code:
/sys/kernel/fast_charge/force_fast_charge=1
I am pretty experienced with modding androids, I know how to use ADB, Fastboot, and all that, so if anyone could help me or even point me in the right direction I would really really appreciate it.
Thank you!!
I don't think, fast charge is good for your dying battery. In the long term a powerbank will be your second best friend. And try to keep state of charge between 25 and 75%

Hey all,
I want my phone to go as fast and smooth as possible. Battery life is no issue as I have recently turned my phone into a brick with help from the double capacity battery.
I've read a little about governors, but it really is easy for a noob like me to get a little lost!
So if some one can share what the best settings would be, it would be muchly appreciated. If anyone wants to take a stab at suggesting a kernel, please go ahead, though from my little experience, kernel choice seems to be something very personal lol.
Have been using franko's kernel a lot but more that I have the bigger battery I can really now focus on speed rather than worrying about conserving power.
Thanks

I just want my phone to go as fast as possible.... Because pretty much everyone is concerned about their battery, most advice is geared towards that in mind. I just want it fast.... Can someone help?

My advice as a fellow noob would be to try out the different kernels and see for yourself which one works best for you. In each kernel if you check out the governors you can set them at the 'performance' mode which should give you the performance you are looking for.
Thanks mate for the reply.
So it's performance governor I'm after.... Will switch up that now. Thanks!

**Disclaimer** I love Cyanogen, I support Cyanogen, and I will not "learn to do it myself". I'm not bashing CM, so don't bash me lol.
So, the question is why doesn't CM kernel support USB fast charge? I didn't know where to put this, but questions go here so... I'm talking about Chad's fast charge mod to make your phone charge at AC rates when hooked up to a USB port (or car charger, or lots of other chargers without the pins shorted inside or in the cable itself if I understand that correctly). Every kernel here on XDA AFAIK supports it, but not the king of options, aka CM
Is it just to prevent damage to some poor saps pc with 500ma USB hookups? I mean, they let us overclock our phones CPU and that would probably have as much damage potential as the fast charge mod, but that's just me thinking out loud. So, does anybody really know why? Has anyone seen any G+ or Twitter posts saying "Why" they decided against this?
I don't know, sometimes its just a matter of submitting the code to their repo. Maybe nobody's done that yet.
bump
would really love to have a cm10 stock kernel + fast charge. that really is the only reason i flash other kernels though I'd prefer cm stock
CyanogenMod pride themselves on building stable and very functional roms.
I know that when a new android user wants to "root and rom" his phone I would generally recommend CyanogenMod. They're roms are functional and not over-the-top with settings that the general public doesn't understand.
If they built fastcharge into their kernel...they'd probably also want a toggle.
If they built a toggle for it; the "pseudo-noob" user that installs the rom would suddenly be baffled by the fact that they can no longer get files to/from their PC. If they didn't implement a toggle but implemented the mod any user who downloaded a third party application could have said functionality available to them again; and be baffled once more.
Also, the USB port is only going to push out as much power as it was built to. By enabling this mod, you're only telling the PHONE that it's OK to pull more than it normally would from a USB port. The USB port still decides how much to push...so the hack may not even affect some ports at all.
This is my take. It isn't an official statement, but I assume they've known about the mod and had plenty of time to implement it but choose not to.
TL;DR
CyanogenMod is a Rom founded on stability and ease-of-use. This option would probably confuse the general public and is therefore left out.
Fast Charge
Easy fix, Have the fast charge code test for data and if it see's data the disable fast charge mode.

Can anyone confirm there HOX hasnt set on fire? Just kidding - I started this thread because I want to know if other user experiences on different Roms are the same as mine.
Firstly / CyanogenMod base roms - super fast lag free but for me super hot cpu and massive battery drain. I mean massive, not usable prob 8-10 hrs if you dont use. 4-5hrs if you turn the screen on for 30-40 minutes and when you do the cpu gets hot, really hot. 75 degree Celsius. Battery hot as well. My experience is based on paranoid android and it tends to get hot while charging as well. I do not think heat is a very good compatriot to your hardware.
JB Sense roms - cool battery & great endurance times. Havent had to check on cpu temp because all great in this department, BUT not without problems in other area's. "Laggy", not any improvement from ics if anything worse. Leedroid was better than the current sense base rom i have now. But InsertCoin JB out dose ICS in the battery life. Wifi hogging which there is now a supposable fix with the latest firmware update. But it doesn't take much reading within the JB forums to find new sets of problems with the new firmware update. Which brings me to my conclusion.
Trade offs - all in all when you take into account the hassle of firmware updates that resolve one problem but bring another and the list of differences between JB sense base and CyanogenMod base roms, for me there always seems to be this trade off. There's sacrifices and consequences to both sides of the fence. IF only the developers could merge these two different bases we would have a wonderful android experience. At the moment I am finding this all to be too much work. The constant updates, full-wipes, re-flashing, trials and more trials all adds up to a lot of time and effort and is only going to drive me away from the beautiful, lovely HOX. I have the nexus 7 which does not give me all the work. You try the roms of choice and are able to live with it. Now I am thinking the nexus 4 is the way to go.
I cannot write code and know nothing about developing and I know the developers answer to all this is the hboot firmware and htc as the problem. But I question you this if you are a developer listening. Why is there a fence between CyanogenMod and Sense when both of you are using the same firmware? If one of you brought the two together you would make a killing.:highfive:

cm10 runs great for me, but it would be nice if the compass worked

Yes another trade off. I cannot live without sense camera and descent weather app.
HTC kernels have the best battery life, so until the HTC JB kernel source code is released, AOSP based ROMs will likely have worse battery life.
As much as everybody likes to deride HTC coders, they actually do a pretty good job. You may also find that the AOSP governors are geared more for performance than battery life, and changing the governor might help.
Ultimately battery life and performance IS the trade-off. Of course, pure optimisations are always possible, but often it's just moving the trade-off point.

Thanks for your explanation. It goes a long way in helping understand, especially the point moving the trade off point.
I know the developers are very skilled and I am not clever enough to deride them. But from a consumers point of view, unless you buy a fully unlocked device you are in for a long sometimes arduous learning curb especially if you unlock your device in preparation for using these custom Roms.
I among st my friends was the first to discover this world of android. Cant remember the htc phone it was on at the time, it was a bit sluggish. But immediately I new it was a winner. Soon as google linked there name to a phone i knew it was time to jump on board with the nexus one. I think there may have been 5-10,000 apps.
Hell a lot of people if not most cannot afford the time or energy to learn. I have found it fascinating but also have now realized how much time android consumes. To much.
My opinion for what its worth, can only see this not getting any better. And unless one jumps back into the nexus range, windows is looking like the better deal. Windows is sure to gain market share and along with it comes all the apps. Almost guaranteed with windows and its structures will see far less aggravation and things will just work and at speed. There wont be these trade offs. Android needs to pull it together and change strategy fast because on the present cause that big lump Steve Balmer was right. Android is just darn to complicated for most users.
Its not complicated and its fun but im sad to say, there comes a time when there is no time and you are going to want something that just works and it still isn't Apple.
Androids future should be getting rid of these trade offs. 75-80 degree Celsius should not exist as a trade off for performance and please don't say try another kernel.
Change course- make things just work! Stop these half baked Roms. Give us the real thing. I would be happy to pay for that......

When I first got my HOX (I had it pre ordered) and I unlocked and tried my first ROM, viper X or leedroid I think (can't remember) , since then and the available roms now, there is a HUGE improvement. Just the fact that I can install another OS on my phone is awesome...Give it time and there will be perfect Roms. But that said, any software, there are bound to be some bugs.... Yes it is time consuming testing different roms but you can generally find out from the forum if its worth the effort before downloading and flashing...

Are you saying you have experienced some of the bugs. Would be nice to know which one's. I love and enjoy my hox as well but there comes a point with time. You obviously have lots of. My prediction is windows is coming and rather than taking a huge bite of Apple it will be at androids expense. These Roms are to buggy.
Been a member here for many years, been into android for many years, but ive never had a phone thats as good as this.
i mean its fast, battery is amazing, i can do anything with it.
why should i go about rooting/rom it?
i can see the benefits from rooting, titanium back up, things like that.
but what do the roms really improve about the phone thats not already "perfect"
i may be only a week in with the note 2, but its flawless so far, i was so excited to root/rom it before i got it as i did with every other android i got, but once i experienced this , i really sat back and said why?
i think ill do the root for titanium, but thats it, unless someone can tell me what the huge benefit is to adding a custom rom .
lol no flames please, just being honest.
It's your call in the end.
Personally, I was hesitant to give it a custom ROM, considering I would lose S-Pen features. I even had a nandroid backup ready to put me back to TW if I remotely didn't like the custom ROM, and this was heavily researching and considering the ROM I'd like to use. What won me over was how much faster and smoother the phone became. Some may argue that that's relative as some can't tell the difference, but I did. I then found out I was able to overclock and undervolt, meaning faster/smoother phone and longer battery life. Another thing that did win me over was the 900mA charging ability via USB. With TW, I guess I had too much background processes running that plugging it in to USB just slowed down the drain. I'm now preparing to see if the 900mA charging ability holds up with the wireless charging mod.
Hey XDA,
Hope all is well for everyone. I don't know how active this sub is, but I am gonna ask anyway!
I was doing some cleaning and found my old Galaxy Nexus (I9250) Maguro. I gave it to my mom to use, but then i gave her my Note 3 and now S7 edge. We are thinking of just sending this phone to an aunt but since its old and runs JB we may not even do that. I dabbed into rooting back when I had it but I am wondering what the community around the GNexus is in terms of custom roms? What is possible to do with this old phone? My only worry is that its only the 16GB version and the ram isn't alot. How well do custom roms work on the GNexus? Maybe I can update it and maybe side load AA and use AA mirror to access youtube and other things in the car, or maybe even just get it rooted and run linux, but I am wondering how performance will be? is it worth it?
Thanks
It seems to be difficult to make a ROM for this device which is fast *and* stable (especially when the battery starts deteriorating and you want to take a whole bunch of photos = constant reboots when the sudden power draw causes the power management software to freak out). Mine is now running ZeeLog's unofficial build of LineageOS 14.1 - it seems pretty stable, but 14.1 on the GNex is s-l-o-w. I only really keep it as an emergency spare, but since it's here I've been using it for streaming. In a few days when that use stops, it'll be relegated to occasional use as a Wi-Fi dongle for OSs which can't see the *actual* dongle on the computer - being tethered while that happens means the failing battery won't matter too much.
tl;dr it'll be slow, and may need frequent / continuous access to charging
I also want to repurpose my old GNEX. Any good rom suggestion ?
I'd like a fast booting rom, and just turn it into a glorified ereader... Suggestion wanted please! Thanks
