I just found out that when at the lower fhd resolution, watching a video doesn't automatically bump up the resolution to max Wqhd+.
Is there a way to keep resolution at the for normal use to save battery, but bump it up when say..playing games or watching videos?
Yes, Use Bixby Routines and add below condition:
If > App Opened (Video, Youtube)
Then > Resolution to WQHD+

Many thanks.
Why didn't I think of this before? You should post this in the battery and SOT threads, it's just genius.
Well Bixby routines are new so we are not used to its presence and features that may be useful
Hadn't noticed these before, looks quite useful and easier than Tasker to setup for simple things. Good find.
This isnt working for me.
I still have 1080p as max resolution in YT even tho WQHD is supposed to be turned on.

Tried but not working at all
So it doesn't work? Did anyone get it to work?
For YouTube it's surely not working since it doesn't depend on the screen's resolution.
You can't force the official app to always stream at given resolution. Bixby Routines can only automatically set the screen to WQHD+, not the quality of the stream.
YouTube it doesn't work. Anyone know how to have 1440p working on youtube?

you can just shot video on 4k uhd and show that off, your phone will automatically reduce the pixels to the max of your screen. otherwise look for 1440p video
Mine came with two superhires videos already on the SD
Does anyone know if we can upload video in native res to YouTube. The video on this phone is pretty freakin good.
Hmm.. YouTube does not support 4k to begin with as yet yea? Last I checked, it was up to 1440p tops.
Which means the phone isn't the problem.

I don't know how to change the Res I upload. The stuff I've uploaded through the YouTube app look pretty crappy. Like 480i almost. Is there something better to use or do I need a different type of YouTube account. Thanks in advance for the help man.
You use the settings button in the YouTube app to change to the variant you want. I record in 4K and upload and it allows me to change up to 1440p.
Default on mobile connection is the lowest res I think and default on wifi is 720p. You can change it up on a per video basis with the settings button.

Weird. Right after I uploaded there was only 320p setting I could watch it in. Every few minutes it would let me go up finally till I hit 1440p. So I guess it uploads it full res and then scales it to whatever the phone or subscriber can set it too. I didn't see any upload settings besides tags and naming it. I'll post a link here just so dome people can see it.

Hi,
YouTube HDR has just stopped working for me. I can still select the resolution + HDR for a compatible video, but the brightness no longer automatically jumps to maximum to cater for the larger dynamic range. It was working right up until yesterday, and doesn't seem to correspond with a YouTube update, either. It's like Android isn't detected the HDR source even though it's selected, and so HDR videos are flat and lifeless.
Has this happened to anybody else?

Using the no root youtube vanced app from here on XDA this isn't an issue if suggest migrating to it yourself just so you don't have ads if nothing else it and there is a black themed one if you're interested in slight battery savings

Press the 3 dots and when you press on resolution you should have a hdr option near the bottom of the list if it's a hdr video

That did the trick, thank you. I wonder why the official app just stops working.

I think it's important to note that although HDR may be selected (like in my case), it may not necessarily work. You'll know if it's worked for sure when the screen brightness automatically sets to maximum. Now, bright parts of the video such as lights will stand out more in contrast to the dark sections, adding overall realism to the picture. I personally think it's great, and can't wait to get an HDR OLED TV.
I noticed a problem when watching Youtube videos. For example this video
I can watch that video just fine on a Poco x3 pro (also SD 860 and 120hz), but on the Pad 5 there is a problem. I don't see anything until 10 nits in the video. I also cranked up the brightness to the max. On my mobile I can see something much earlier - with normal brightness.
Does anybody have an idea what the problem could be?
Mine starts from 1 nit onwards, if I enable screen balance app 0.5 nit. Tbh I hate the screen. This device is called 'media consumption'. I can't enjoy a movie when blacks are absent
I am regretting my decision tbh. Should have bought a basic oled device.
I just realized that when I use Newpipe instead I can see the colored boxes from 0.2 nits onwards. So it is not necessarily a screen issue?
I am wondering what could be the difference between Newpipe and Youtube?
Could also be youtubes own codec for videos. However, the ips panel used on mi pad 5 lacks any depth or contrast. checked couple of reviews. One says contrast is 1300:1 the other says 550:1 . What I can tell is, I am not gonna watch a movie on this tablet.
I was reading someone today saying that YouTube only displays HDR with the AV1 codec.
No idea if true or not
With max brightness after 2 nit , in normal brightness after 3 nits
Thanks for your answers and testing!
I guess, there is indeed something broken in the Xiaomi Pad 5. I noticed that the display problem only happens when you play HDR movies. The Netflix movie quality is good in my case. but only because my plan does not include HDR apparently. HDR movies look ok with Newpipe, because Newpipe does not support HDR ...
HDR is basically broken on all Pad 5 tablets. Wow!

Thank you for the added information @parser
What application is that? Very cool the way it displays all formats available

Even though I have youtube premium, I use his YouTube app on my firetv.
Ah yes, i hear it is a superb application.
I too pay for Youtube Premium, but will load it up on my Shield TV as Shield users mention how good it is, all the time.
Thank you! @parser

Me too have the same issue. Haven't find any solution yet
Can you share the link YouTube you have it? So I can compare with a different device.
Hello, I have a xiaomi poco f3 and experienced something similar but worse (youtube videos showing weird pixels and colors or noise like display at parts of the video, like a broken tv signal). I tried moving from miui 14 to a custom pixel OS but it did not solve the issue. Another thing I experienced is that 240p and below it was working flawlessly, anything above and I'd get the glitches. Likewise, other platforms like twitch.tv worked perfectly. Trying revanced youtube, root version or not, did not work for me. I pinpointed the problem to the vp9 codec, which is used by youtube videos when setting resolution above 240p. The following things worked for me:
a) Whats your refresh rate? Try setting it at 120hz at all times (other options like setting it automatically or per app won't do, for my pixelOS, it was "force peak refresh rate" in Display settings). This solution worked for me globally, including the youtube app, but increases battery consumption.
b) Browser only solution, that works without forcing max refresh rate at all times (and thus saving battery): use the enhanced-h264ify extension, available for android only for kiwi browser, afaik. There, in the addon options, block vp8, vp9 and av1 (iirc they all came pre checked)
