Android 10 + Nova Launcher? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hi, before flashing Android 10 I would like to know how does Nova Launcher perform, specially how are "recent apps" shown (vertical or horizontal).
Thank you!

Pixel 2 XL running Android 10 + Nova Launcher.
My Recent Apps is exactly the same on 10 as it was on Pie with each app having a "vertical" window that you scroll through horizontally.
If you use the 2-button System Navigation layout, there will also be a Clear All button the left of the leftmost Recent App (Clear All doesn't appear if you are using 3-Button System Navigation for some reason).

[Q] App to restore the position of the softkeys?

I always operate my tablets in landscape mode. But on 4.3, Google have moved the softkeys from the left hand side of the screen to the centre, and I keep hitting the home key accidentally. Does anyone know of an app please that will get them back where they should be?!
The default launcher does not give the option to choose where the softkeys should be placed. You should install a more customizable launcher. In my memory, "NOVA launcher" or lightening home launcher should do it. Smart Launcher has the keys on the left by default, at least in older versions. Yet, the placement of the softkeys can be enforced when running apps: installing a customizable launcher will allow you to change the default placement, but they can move when the screen displays an app.

Thanks for your reply. I actually already use Nova, but I can't find an option that does this. I'll have a look at Smart Launcher..

Question How to use Nova launcher as default launcher? Please Read

Hello here are my current issues:
1. Settings the launcher to Nova in the settings will only work with button navigations.
- Using gesture navigation take you to nubia launcher if you use the home gesture on any app/screen
2. Even if you use the button navigations, whilst in Nova,
when going into recent app button, no matter if you clear or press back, you will be returned to nubia launcher
Using the CN model flashed with global ROM.
I want to use Nova launcher with gestures and have heard some in the thread mentioning they have this working.
Can someone lend me a hand please?
Thanks!
Don't know if you're still having this issue or not but how I somehow got it to work is going into the settings, app info, hit the 3 dots in the upper right and select Default App Settings. Tap on Desktop and change it to Nova Launcher. Sometimes though, when I exit a couple of particular apps, it resorts back to the Nubia Launcher. So what I did was keep the icon for Nova Launcher on the main desktop of the Nubia Launcher. This only happens rarely but still a pain when it does.
anyone know is this bug fix on 4.23 update?

S20 with vertical app drawer (Nova) and gesture swipe instead of 3 button bar?

Hi,
I come from Huawei P10 and just got a S20. I am not a fan of the Samsung One UI, particularly the horizontal page by page scrolling in the app drawer.
However, switching to Nova means that the swipe gestures won't work as expected (at least there are some known issues with Android 10 and 11, e.g. redraw home screen)
Any idea if I somehow can get horizontal scrolling in the app drawer and swipe gestures?
Markus
I just installed Nova launcher and it works well with One Hand Operation +

No Gesture Navigation on Nova Launcher (Android 11)

I've tried adding Nova Launcher to a Vivo x51, running Android 11. The Gesture Navigation doesn't work, and is no longer even an option in the phone's menu. When I change back to the Stock Launcher the option is there again.
When I look it up I see posts about Android 10 not allowing gestures, but I'm on Android 11.
Should it work? Is it sometimes brand-dependent? Should I re-install Nova? Or any other tips? When you get used to gestures it's very strange to have to go back to soft-buttons.

Question Any better third party gesture navigation alternatives?

Sorry if I've missed a thread and/or discussion on this, but looking to see if anyone can recommend a decent replacement for gesture navigations.
Perhaps one works better with third party launchers such as Nova and offers more features than standard gestures?
Any info appreciated!
Cheers
There are multiple, e.g. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.agooday.fullscreengestures
However, the gestures are handled by the Pixel launcher which you must disable, otherwise risk of gestures that interact which gives strange effects.
When the Pixel Launcher is disabled however, the "recent" apps list can no longer be used (as it is also implemented by the Pixel launcher). And AFAIK, Nova does not have a recents implementation.

Thanks for the reply.
Hmm so perhaps not sounding so great, in the sense of conflicting gestures and the impact of having pixel launcher disabled... Hmmm!
Habe you or anyone a success story of replacing stock gestures smoothly?
I been using Vivid NG for a few years now and also on this phone. I set up system gestures to 3 button and use a navbargone magisk mod in the themes section to remove it. Make sure you have whatever alternative you will use set up prior. I don't disable pixel launcher at all but I guess when switching to 3 button nav I don't need to.
Using Nova launcher as well.
Vivid has a total of 9 trigger zones and a total of 9 triggers per zone with a total of 81 triggers if maxed out.
I'm using Nova and fluid NG or fng on the store. I have the nav bar gone module installed. Fng allows up to 4 triggers on each side of the phone with both a quick pull and a long pull option for each trigger, so really 8 triggers total.
Reccommend switching to 3 button nav if going to this route.

Brilliant ... also just installed FNG, set system navigation to 3 buttons, hide navbar ... that works a lot better with Nova and you can still use the 'recents' from the Pixel Launcher !!!
All those annoying 'screen flashes' are now gone it seems ...
Thanks for the replies guys, sounds like FNG is a winner! I'll give it a try later on
And actually, it seems that with this combination, those annoying missed screen taps are also gone ... but have to test/check a bit more ...
Just to summarize my setup:
- Nova launcher
- Settings > System > Gestures > System navigation > 3 buttons
- Use https://forum.xda-developers.com/f/google-pixel-6-pro.12313/ to hide the 3 button nav nar
- Install FNG and configure your nagivation (bottom/left/right) as you want (see https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fb.fluid)
This works brilliantly with Nova. I don't have those occasional weird screen flashes any more (which arise from interation between Nova/Pixel launcher and the standard gesture) and you can still have 'recents' from the Pixel launcher (configure it in FNG). And the ghost touches when you go from an app back to HOME and then very quickly tap an icon are also gone!

I'm a little confused by this statement regarding Recents, I hope you can clarify for me. I'm using Nova Launcher Prime exclusively. I haven't disabled the Pixel Launcher, I just don't use it and I have Nova set to be my default one.
I'm using the Pixel's default gestures for Back, Home, and Recents just fine. I'm also using Nova's configurable gestures to swipe up for the app drawer, swipe down for the notification shade, and I use CleanSlate kernel's sweep to sleep.
I use edge gestures. It's way more natural to navigate using the sides of your device. For example air swipe up for recents, swipe down to go home, touch and hold to drop down the notification shade, swipe and pull up to change brightness level etc
Amazing, amazing app.

I had these occasional screen flashes with Nova when switching back from an app to the Nova launcher (not sure why, somehow some weird interaction with gestures). I suspected it had something to do with the Pixel launcher, so disabled Pixel launcher.
Then indeed, the screen flashes were gone.
However, the "recent apps" list (swipe up and hold) does no longer work then as the recent screen (https://developer.android.com/guide/components/activities/recents) is implemeted by the Pixel launcher.
So I was in a dilemma:
a) eliminate screen flashes -> disable Pixel launcher -> no more recent apps screen
b) leave screen flashes -> leave Pixel launcher enabled -> recent apps list
So now, as said in previous post I have:
Nova + Pixel launcher enabled + 3 button navigation (no gestures) + hide nav bar + FNG (fluid navigation gesture)
That solves the problem of the screen flashes for me (and has additional benefit of more configurable gestures).
In addition, the other issue which I had was: if you go back from an app to Nova launcher and very quickly tap an icon on the Nova screen then sometimes that tap would not be picked up (waiting 0.5sec before tapping would solve that problem). Again, I suspect some weird interaction between Nova and Pixel launcher. But with the above combination also that issue seems to be gone for me now. So I'm much happier.

Okay, thanks. I haven't noticed any screen flashes, thankfully.

Yes it is weird ... but I do have 5 screens in Nova and my Nova backup file from which I restore is big/old ... possibly that has something to do with it ... I should probably re-setup Nova from scratch ... and I did some hackery inside the Nova backup to retain chrome shortcuts when I restore the Nova backup. Anyway, my setup is working great now with FNG gestures.
Vivid ng and gesture control and if you're rooted Xposed edge, Xposed edge is the best of all, there is nothing like it in my opinion, all 3 in the play store
