I've literally tried everything. Basically I've tried the device on 2 pc's running win 10. I get no notification on PC when I connect the device. Tried numerous cables, cleaned ports, numerous drivers, usb debugging on/off not sure there's anything left to try. The device is bootloader locked not rooted and stock. Anyone else had this problem? Can anything be done? Or do I wait hoping the next update might fix. Seems very strange to be honest, never seen this before.
USB preferences are greyed out and can't be changed, and file transfer is selected in developer options.
thanks
You have tried multiple PC's and multiple cables... I would give Linux a try before throwing in the towel (it needs no special drivers for Android), but it sure sounds like a faulty device.
Have you tried a Network Settings or complete factory reset?
I'd second the reset, always worth a try before sending it back.

Yes tried factory reset a few times. How do you mean network settings?
Take it theres no way of doing this over wifi or bluetooth without 1st having the cable connected?
1- Turn on usb debug under developer settings.
2 - Install the latest Android platform on your PC.
3 - Check your Virus / malware on your PC.
4 - Try using a Samsung device driver if all else fails.

Network Settings Reset resets all network related settings, it is in the Reset Options menu labeled "Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & bluetooth" but it is performed as part of a full factory reset as well. It basically resets all network related settings back to default without resetting the entire device.
Guess I am not sure what your asking about over WiFi or Bluetooth... You want to transfer files that way, there are definitely ways to do that.
Have you installed the correct Windows Android Drivers?
Are you using the usb-c to usb-a converter that came with the phone?
Someone posted that was causing them their problems in this forum... https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/3721418?msgid=13426956

There are problems sometimes with driver installation on Win 10 even though everything looks ok. It happened to me a few years ago and there were some arcane steps I took to get it to work. But I just found this and perhaps it can help. I didn't read through it just did a quick search. Good luck.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
Then there's this one. Go to "Fix MTB driver installation" and there is a way to install it from the file you can find. It's basically right click wpmdmtp.inf and install. I believe that's how I did it some years back.
https://www.**********.com/fix-mtp-driver-installation-on-windows-10/ Yikes what's with all the ** ? That should be ********** Ok let's try this:

Hi, I have reflashed my ROM I dont know how many times. Yesterday I tried to connect via activesync on a new ROM and it wouldnt connect. These are some of the things that happened:
Device orange charging light flashes a few times then goes off [never seen THAT before]
Activesyc menu comes up on device but activesync doesnt connect
Get 'this device can perform faster' message on desktop
Sometimes get USB devce not recognized on desktop
SOmetimes device orange charging light it stays on if I plug direct into PC but still doesnt activesync
I have tried to connect as DISK DRIVE but I dont see the device on my PC.
Have tried different ROMS, 6.5, 6.51, sense 2.1 and 2.5 but all have same issue. Have also tried connecting to other computers. same issue.
Have played around with USB to PC menu options (enable / diable faster data sync etc) but doesnt make a difference.
Anyone had this problems? Thoughts?
Have you tried diselecting "ask me 1st about usb connection type when I connect the device to the pc" under USB to PC settings
It worked for me
This is the exact problem I am facing!
I tried everything - as diskdrive, activesync (with/without speedup), etc.
On many ROMs, even the original one (WM6.1)
Can't connect - every PC gives an 'unknown device' and on some ROMs I cannot charge via USB, only via mains...
I also tried without the question on connection.
Just some thoughts:
Do you have corruptions on screen sometimes? (Some graphical glitches)
Any .CAB files you cannot install?
Did you try to reflash the same ROM more than once?
tried to connect without card in the device and in flight mode? (Uses less power)
With me it started after a ROM flash from Miri... (I don't blame him!!)
The Hard SPL did not give me any problem, the radio was not flashed, just the OS. But reverting did not help.
I certainly hope you will find a solution, since I have the exact same problem!!
Do you stil know what ROM you flashed when this problem occured?
I reverted to original ROM 6.1 AND 6.5 which included everything - boot, radio, os, stardup image. But it did not change!
I figured it out after trying everything i could: i think its a hardware problem. I have dropped my devicetoo many times, or plugged it in too many times. Who knows.

And how did you figured it out? Did you return the device to the shop?
I have this exact same issue except I am on AthineOS... I thought it was my PC until I read these posts. No OS updates or any other machine updates were performed except on my device. Any clues as to a fix?
Somehow I don't think this is just hardware.
I did drop my device once, but that was even before first flash. After that it still worked.
So, some weeks later I HSPLed without any problem. After that the device still worked.
Then, after investigating which ROM to use I flashed the ROM a few days later.
Right after the first flash it all still worked. So, had to flash another and from that moment on the device cannot be reckognised by any PC.
I still think it has something to do with the flashing. I think the device does not give correct feedback when it receives some commands from PC (eg. the command to reply the device type/number)
Does anyone know a program which can check the USB port for the HTC Touch Pro 2? Just to test wheather the connector pins are ok?
download activesync 4.5 and run the setup. it will perform a repair. that usually solves the problem. if not, try a different usb cable and try plugging into different ports on your pc.

These are the first things done. And this was already written in here.
It happens with many PCs, including some on which the device never connected to.
Also tried different cables, ports, etc.
Also disabled the fast transfer etc. etc.
Even tried several other ROMs, inclusding original Dutch 6.1 and Dutch 6.5
I'm having the same issue. I can connect via bluetooth, but not usb. And I'm stuck with 6.1. I was tole my phone was brand new, but now I'm starting to think otherwise.

Some questions, to verify this is due to flashing or is a fault in the design of the device...
- Where did you get the device?
- Have you flashed the device?
- Did you accidentally drop the device?
hi just to say had a completely orignal o2 xda orbit 1 flashed with new rom everything worked perfect before now active sync plays up i can sometimes connect but get usb device not reconigsed then click cross then pull out usb then reinsert then active sync connects works fully functional then after 5 min it disconects this is driving me mad as use active sync for a fast internet connection on my pda as my wifi is crap
So my phone was mounting fine on my pc, and then all of a sudden it wasn't. My Nexus 7 still mounts properly and accepts developer commands, but the m8 won't (yes developer settings is on).
I tried wiping and flashing a rom clean and it still doesn't work, charges fine though. Any advice?

You might try a different cord.
Open Device Manager in Windows and then plug the phone in. Do you see it in the list with a little yellow triangle? Do you see Android USB Devices listed?
OP after literally messing with various driver files, 8 usb ports and 2 laptops, I dug out my old box of cables and found a taped up, on its last limb OEM HTC EVO 4g (not lte the original) cable. This thing has been through the ringer. But its exactly what It needed. I figured with the 3 cable I had already tried this wasn't the issue, but have you tried using an OEM cable? I guess that is all that works. Good Luck

Uninstall all HTC drivers and HTC Sync. Then connect the phone. DO NOT choose the option to automatically install any drivers.
Open Device Manager, find the phone. Select the option to manually pick the driver, and select the generic MTP device driver.
This is what worked for me, after countless attempts at re-installing various HTC drivers, different cables and ports, etc.
Bump. Still looking for answer to this. I have RUU'ed both to Sense and Google Phone editions and the problem still persists, the phone does not detect its connected to a computer and change to mtp accordingly. Only way I was able to get the RUU in there was through fastboot, which is again the only time I can access the phone through usb. Adb is no luck in either android or recovery.

Have you tried revoking the USB debugging authorization and then accepting the RSA fingerprint key again when connecting to PC?
Obviously it can't be an USB cable problem if you can connect to it in bootloader mode and use fastboot commands.
To clarify, the phone just charges when connected, it does not detect that it is connected to PC so debugging doesn't even trigger, neither does mtp. I don't even get the slow charging notification
Does it do the same when you plug it in and reboot the computer to "pick up" during boot up process? Or if you run a live CD? I never had an issue like that with my phone but I did have a similar problem with the USB external blu ray drive I bought some time ago. The pc just didn't detect it at all not on any of the ports until I rebooted my PC with the drive already plugged it and for some reason it picked it up. <Not a solution as I don't know what caused it to not be detected in the first place but still...
Not sure if it's an issue with the device(Phone for you, blu ray drive for me) or if it's a problem with the PC even though other things might still work for you as it definitely did for me(phone, headset, mouse, keyboard, usb extender + all the external hard-drives connected to it)...
Problem exists in all computers, Mac, pc, linux
Did you try what I suggest in Post #6 above?
This worked for me when I had the same issue. adb and fastboot would work, but it would not mount MTP.
And just in the last day or 2 I helped someone else with the same issue and fix.
The phone doesn't show up in device manager.
Have you modify the Kernel? (Applying some settings for example)
I browsed over the web for this issue and found some people with the same problems. They solved by removing the settings applied on the kernel or flashing a new one.
I've flashed various kernels and ruu, still same result
Still looking for help
I am rooted with magisk and have had no issues until recently I cannot do any file transfers via USB. I also cannot use fastboot to Flash Android p. I want to unroot and remove magisk and Flash the latest OTA however I can't determine if I can remove magisk and unroot without being able to connect to fastboot. I'm also thinking that I may have to do an RMA. Any thoughts? Has anyone else had their USB data transfer stopped working. I've tried multiple cables, multiple computers and Chromebooks.

Same here, happened out of the blue last week. No Android Auto and no computer would see it. Still charged but no data. I reset it but no go. I RMA'd and new one is perfect. The thing I knew it was messed up for sure is when I got new phone and you use cable from old one to new one to transfer data and it would not see old phone.
We're you rooted on the device you sent back? I'm worried Google will not approve my return

I flashed the new update yesterday and afterwards I had this exact same issue. the reason why I discovered was I never got the prompt to allow usb debugging I had to enable and disable usb debugging several times while plugging it into the pc and after a few tries I got the message and was able to enable it and then I could use the phone on the pc
I had the same problem but I eventually got it to work again. Heres how:
1) Enable developer mode by going into Settings > System About Phone > Build number and tapping a few times (5 I think!)
2) Click back and then select Advanced > Developer Options
3) Scoll down the menu until you see "Default USB configuration". Tap and then select the option you require (ie: File Transfer)
4) Click back, then scroll up the menu till you see "USB Debugging". Enable USB Debugging.
5) Connect your Pixel 2 to you laptop/PC. The phone should appear in the Devices list in 'Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers. Leave it connected for another 5 or 10 minutes and it should become available in "This PC"
6) Disconnect the Pixel2 from your laptop/PC
7) Disable "USB Debugging" and disable "Developer Mode" on the phone.
8) Reconnect the Pixel2 to your PC/Laptop. It should now appear under "This PC" every time you connect and you should now be able to view and transfer files between you PC and Pixel2.
Let us know if this worked for you.

Try cleaning up with a brush. I could be too much dust interfering with the connection.
I read on another thread that someone used post-it strips to do the cleaning.
To close the loop. Cleaning worked. Thank you.
As the written on the title section, my pc/mac can not detect my phone, it only charges it.
I re-flashed my phone to stock ( Oct update ).the problem is when it booted up. It can't detect anymore my phone. My pc gives me an error "USB can not be recognized". I think there's no problem with the pc driver since i just flashed the image. Any suggestions??
Method i tried.
Factory flash (since i cant go to bootloader and pc/mac cant detect it)
Safe Mode usb connection
ADB over wifi cannot be detected
RMA (not possible, bootloader unlocked)

I've RMA'd a bootloader unlocked phone before. Just flash stock firmware and re-lock it before sending it back. Google's only requirement is that you factory reset from the settings menu in order to disable factory reset protection. If you fail to do this, there will be problems, but otherwise you should be fine.

If you explain that to them, it might still be okay. The important part is performing the factory reset from the settings menu.
Try clean the port with some tissue paper. Just push in some tissue paper with a pin, be gentle and don't damage the port. You will be surprised how dirty the port is
Be sure usb debugging is enabled in developer options?

When you flashed the full image, did you leave the flash-all script alone, allowing it to wipe data? Have you done a factory reset from recovery mode? Google doesn't care if your bootloader is unlocked, but they will make you factory reset the phone before authorizing an RMA. May as well get that out of the way now. Nothing to lose because the data transfer tool will not work anyway if your USB-C port is hosed. Just make sure you have a recent Google backup, and that Photos is sync'd up with all your pictures.
in my case, the phone will be only recognized on a USB 3.0 port.
I had this exact same issue.
Try this If you still have the UsbC to USB connector that came with your phone. Plug in an ordinary flash drive into that and into your phone. You should see a notification that you have a USB connected.
Then unplug that and try to connect to the PC. Worked for me twice when this happened.
Is your USB port clean? When I took my Pixel 2 XL into the sea, afterwards data cables weren't working but it would charge, due to salt water residue. After giving it a good clean it worked again.
Worth a shot just to ensure dirt isn't the issue!

No mtp? no "Usb Debugging"?
Hello! I have a mi A2 lite, I can't connect it to the computer using USB, it doesn't install drivers, it doesn't appear on installed devices. I've tried all the tutorials available on YouTube, but it doesn't work, does anyone know what I could do to fix this?
- I already downloaded the drivers and installed manually, but nothing changes.
- I've tried on multiple computers and none work
- When I bought the cell phone it connected, but after a while no more.
Does anyone know any solution to this problem?
Thanks!
what rom are you on? I'm using the latest 11.0.7 android 10 and its perfectly fine for me.. maybe you can try to factory reset your phone

Same here on v11.0.12. Its a driver issue. You need to install latest xiaomi drivers + qualcomm drivers. I fixed it before but it doesnt work again after i uninstall drivers.
I connected phone to PC with only old original short cable, no other cables worked :/
Have you tried to clean phone's USB socked? There are some spray contact cleaners, that can be used for this purpose.
