I read in a few places that there are now over 30,000 Andriod Apps on the Android Market, but I don't see them here: http://www.android.com/market/
By my count there are exactly 34 paid apps and 134 free apps...
Am I missing something?
Maybe they show up when browsing from your mobile

I think http://www.appstorehq.com/android-apps is very good. You can download or buy the app directly from the website, from your phone.

android.com/market doesn't show all the apps... stupid I know
You need to use something like cyrket.com or androidlib to view all the apps on a PC.
Ha, I was wondering the same thing as the OP- will have to bookmark the links.
Just on a side note: what's the general procedure of downloading/installing apps from a PC (or for that matter on the device)?

If you download a application to your PC, you'll have to transfer it to your phone. Either by copying it to your SD card, or by other means. You then have to install it via a file manager like Linda, ASTRO or similar.
If you use the Android Market on your phone, you just find a program, select install and voila.

I was just wondering are any of the game apps as good as the Iphone. There are many good games but what I have seen so far on android some games look taccy and kind of old.
I have not searched a lot of games. But what are the best games?
I am struggling with this too.
I've become so used to the quality of design, look and function of iPhone apps and their appstore. I am keen to move to the HTC Desire shortly, but am finding it nigh on impossible to even find the spps I will require. I spend ages searching and still come oup with stuff which looks like it was written for a PC 20 years ago. And the recommended sites to browse the apps on are so ugly and full of dross, but more importantly, are unable to present the applications in a way which gives me any confidence that I will be able to satisfy my requirements using this platform.
I thought it must just be me as I am new to it (although I had none of these problems when I moved to iPhone) so asked for pointers. but I am still at a loss as to where the good, well-designed, modern, slick apps are.
I believe the Desire will give me a great comms experience out of the box, but no-one has been able to convince me that the apps I may desire to customise the device to me requirements are actually available.
Please dont think I am having a go; I am not. I am dead keen to move to this platform, but my research is not delivering results so far.
So I ask again, where is the good stuff?

The Good stuff is in the market. To find the good stuff you need to search in the market on your phone or via cyrket.com
If you give a list of apps I'll more than hapily find ones that are as good as or better than iPhone equivalents.
I've been trying Cyrket.com but it doesnt seem to work properly for me. All I did was filter for navigation tools and it came up with a blank.
As for a list of required apps,
- Exchange Tasks (with push sync)
- Compass
- London Tube map/planner
- Tide Planner for sailing
- Office apps - Word, Spreadsheet, Powerpoint editing
- Decent dictionary/thesaurus - such as Chambers
- and some quality games with good graphics

Android really got it's start as a device platform for the more tech savvy.
Most of the first year's worth of apps were written by developers venturing into the Android app environment. As such - most were pretty rudimentary and more focused on performance (learning how to make an app work well in the Android environment) than aesthetics. Also, there were many more apps made for productivity, communication, etc and very few made for Gaming (as Gaming development is normally a LOT more involved). Finally, the G1 which for a LONG time was the only device available was so memory constricted that many custom home screen apps had difficulty running - MUCH LESS any graphically oriented game. It was a learning experience.
AND, one cannot say (as I have read many claim) that Android is just Linux on a phone so what is the big deal development wise.... I have read this forum a LOT and Android IS NOT just Linux on a phone. There are a lot of differences and a lot more restrictions with Android.
Believe it or not... The Android app scene is constantly improving. Better looking games and more polished apps are constantly coming out.
Please don't try to compare the Android apps available to the Iphone which has had over three years to improve and started out with a better device in the first place.
I really dislike the Iphone and feel it's GUI is not intuitive at all (for me). So, I never really used one at length. But, I have seen some really great games on the Iphone. However, I can definitely say - I ENVY the Iphone devs a great starter phone for development! I only wish that Google/Android had put out a really great device (not memory restricted) as a first device. It would have made it so much easier for the developers to learn and work on.
Try AppBrain.com to search for apps. That is the site I use now. They also have a companion app for the phone.

The interesting thing is that I actually dont 'NEED' to add many 3rd party apps to the Desire spec in order to fill my requirements as the out-of-box experience is so good. I have over 130 apps on my iPhone, but I probably use 10 of them regularly - the rest are just a bit of fun.
At present I am just trying to assimilate what apps are available that I know I will need, and how good the quality is.
Are any of the better 3rd party apps emulating the style of the SENSE UI? That would be cool.

Re the Exchange on Desire, the reason I included this in my request was that all my research indicates that the Exchange implementation does not include Tasks.
I could use Moxier Mail which includes task exchange sync, but that may compromise the integration with the rest of the Sense UI, so I am looking for a good Task app with exchange sync, perhaps using WebDav.
It would be great if Tasks was included in the Sense interface as standard, but so often Tasks are omitted. Baffles me why they leave it out - same on iPhone.
Just discovered Tasker, I have been using Locale since first getting my G1, but had loads of issues with profiles not working correctly etc but found this;

Its not as userfriendly as locale but is much more powerful and customisable and have to say so far so good, would recommend to anyone looking for an alternative to Locale!
though I must say some of these settings I would like to see native to android, especially auto profile settings.

I thought that too until I read a review that I can't link yet due to being new and tried Tasker myself. I much prefer it over the other two.
Question is, have you figured out any trick or neat things to do with programs like this minus the typical Wifi On/Off stuff?
I have set up a page of widgets that change the wallaper!!..i think its cool, so with one click I can change the wallaper. Another is having GPS come on when maps is opened and switched off when maps is closed, or wifi switching on when opening internet and switch off when closing.
there are so many possibilities, could spend hours configuring timed widgets or normal widgets, various profiles. Yes the leaning curve is a little longer then other apps but its just hands down the best profile/settings manager
Bumping this thread just to let everyone know one of the BEST apps in for the Android platform at the moment. TASKER is excellent. I hope Google learns of this and buys the program, hires the programmer, and builds this into Android as a sort of "Advanced Utility" for everyone.

Bad idea....this probably means we need to pay for it again
I myself just added in a new profile to for an auto responder to anyone who sms/call me when my hp is facing down. Good for when you want to have some peace (busy or sleeping) but yet wish to let other know you will get back to them later

I have 2 children under the age of 3, all of their content (audio/video) is digital accessed. This created a disconnection for them, as they are not able to play /change the content unless my wife or I change it for them. I know there is an interest for them to be able to change the content themselves as when we have Netflix or Pandora open on the touch enables screens they are all was trying to pick the show/music they like. The few places where they do have a physical medium to play content,
The DVD player/CD player (note we have it backed up digitally), there is much interest with the “desk”. The kids would love nothing more to remove and replace it over and over. Watching this behavior over some time has lead me to believe that a simpler solution would/could be doable.
This brings me to NFC tags, with a few add-on programs the NFC tag can be scripted to perform most complicated input tasks.
Goal:
To provide access to complicated tasks via NFC.
To allow a person of limited physical input abalaty to use smart phone tech.
This can include, the disabled, the young, the old. To allow access to tasks/apps while driving or when attention is needed other places.
Current Scope:
Create tags for a radio station that can be quickly taped to change station/play album.
( Keeping the driver form looking at their phone while driving). Create tags that auto play Netflix/Amazon Prime/YouTube/Google +/etc videos.
This may include second screen casting Create tags to autolaunch/call via Skype/cell phones
Want to call grandma? Or have grandma get on Skype, etc. Create tags to attach to things around the house foods/shapes/flashcards etc.

interesting ... how did you discover the uri to launch apps with arguments?
I also used a custom URI and NFC Task Launcher to launch my app "Badge NFC" and store custom data inside the app database (look at my signature to get a playstore link) ...

All of the custom URIs prefixes are in the apps manifest.
If I'm lucky I can simply type it into google and find someone else that's done the work, (to get the data argument)
If not I used JD-GUI to look over the source code to trace the Android Intent path and see what the app is looking for.
Another way is to see is if the app has a web app interface. Aka if I go to the web site or get a share link, does the app autolunch the content.

Hey everyone! In response to a recent suggestion by a colleague, I've determined Cordova may be the best course of action for my current project. The reason we determined this, is because what I'm developing is already a web-app, that is complete, in which I can make a responsive style for mobile browsers & use Cordova to use a webview to access the app. So I'm looking for advice from experienced developers to see if this would be a viable option.
Let me start by giving you a run-down of the project. The project is called SecurSend. It is a private messaging platform that allows the user to submit sensitive information, without the worry of being monitored or keylogged. The end-user will compose a message which will generate a unique URL to the content, the recipient will receive this URL, and when accessing the content, it is permanently destroyed from the server. I don't currently have the site live, or it'd be much easier to show you, but the premise is security.
There is no current mobile theme for the site, however, it wouldn't be too difficult to implement. For something like this, do you feel Cordova would be the best option? Also, if you have any advice on Cordova, I wouldn't mind!

thinking some combo of xmpp + OTR and webrtc might do it
(OTR adds end-to end encryption to xmpp and as browser support for webrtc improves there's peer-to-peer udp possibilities in webrtc)
Re Cordova:
. not yet sure but from looking at some javascript-based apps I've seen done with it what I've seen of it looks like an easier place to start for installable web apps (curious too)

This sounds like an interesting concept, but I have heard you don't get the full native experience with Cordova (the UI seems different than that of native applications).
Do buttons and dialogs look the same as native apps?
Can you, for example, create transparent action bars, or side bars?
Or, notifications or watch faces for Android Wear?

Alternatively, you could use Steroids.js which has most native features built-in -- even Native UI components, MAPS API, Camera API, etc.
Cordova can achieve this, but as stated before, you will suffer some performance issues (especially Android 4.4 and lower)
I believe that doing web apps is the best for trying new ideas on all major platforms. The effort is very low compared to native development and performance is sufficient.
Ionic Framework has great performance and is continuously improving.
Though I wouldn't recommend web apps for games I recently released an open source zombie game called zland (zland.io).
Maybe React Native could be interesting for you as well. You will get true native performance.
With React Native you can share a code base between platforms but have to rewrite platform dependent thinks.
They recently released it for Android so you can deploy to both iOS and Android.
I estimate the effort somewhere between web apps and native apps.
I'd like to make presentations on my Tab S2 but have not found a suitable app. Note that I am not looking for PowerPoint or OpenOffice Impress but rather an app where I can:
- define a sequence of photos/image files to be included;
- define if I want transitions to be timed or if I use a finger to manually transition to occur (different transition times between different slides);
- not necessary to be able to add "music"; and finally,
- a "professional" UI.
In other words, I do not need to be able to create presentation slides etc. There is no shortage of "slideshow" apps in the playstore but I have only found junk. And, as usual, Google does not allow for any "sophisticated" searches to find something useful - in it itself unbelievable for a company that prides itself on organizing the world's information...
Suggestions appreciated!
